A Country Music<\/a> concert in to a massacre when a man with at least a dozen military steul weapons in a hotel room started to shoot down on people at a concert. The shooter shot and killed himself as the police were beginning to move in, this is the deadliest mass shooting in United States<\/a> history, surpassing the pulse nightclub shooting. On the right, you see the people were shot, jason aldean was performing to wrap up this three day Country Music<\/a> festival. We are waiting for President Donald Trump<\/a>s statement on the mass shooting. You can see the mandalay bay hotel, its the one with the vertical lights going up it. The shooter was perched in a 32nd story hotel room that he checked in to a few days prior, this obviously took a lot of thought. He brought a lot of weapons, he checked in under a different name, then he got into the room and carried all of his bags up to the hotel room where he shot out the window or broke the window and started to fire down on to these unsuspecting people gathered to watch the concert in las vegas, the shooter was Stephen Paddock<\/a>, he is retired, an avid hunter, his brother said he had no idea that his brother was capable of doing this. He lived in a Retirement Community<\/a> near the Las Vegas Strip<\/a>. Last night he fired his weapons across las vegas boulevard into this area of concert goers, 22,000 people were packed in for the final evening of the Country Music<\/a> festival. Investigators are saying it was a lone wolf attack but shortly after we went on the air, within the last hour, isis claimed responsibility but they did not provide any details or proof that they were connected with this but if you have been watching the news, eight months ago, we had a story where isis came out with detailed maps and places that they would want to hit and las vegas was one of them. Isis put out a video calling for a lone wolf shooter. The motive is the biggest question here, Everyone Wants<\/a> to know why this happened, why the man, the shooter, Stephen Paddock<\/a> went on this pre planned shooting rampage. The concert goers were there for a Country Music<\/a> festival. The shooter fired from the 32nd floor from the mandalay bay hotel, firing down on the crowd. One account said that there were people running away from the concert and wound up on the runway for the airport. They were looking to go any place, they were trying to get into other hotels but all of the hotels went into lock down, nobody knew where the shots were coming from, it took so long, they had to go hotel by hotel and floor by floor, then they figured out it was the mandalay bay, they saw flashes coming from the window, they went room by room and they eventually went up to that floor, by the time they busted the door open, the man had killed himself. We are wait to hear from President Donald Trump<\/a>. He is coming out with comments as to what happened in las vegas with the shooting taking place just after 10 00 with jason aldean performing, rapid gun fire from an automatic weapon. The question is, will we do things differently when it comes to events surrounded by tall buildings, we have never seen this. Even in new york city, in times square, everyone is allowed to be in their apartments and offices, if someone wants to do Something Like<\/a> this, unfortunately, no matter how much security, its nearly impossible to stop a terror attack like this from happening. The president is coming out in a few moments. Its not an active shooterring scene right now, the shooter is dead but the police are conducts raids on the shooters home in mesquite. They are trying to find out any motive. They are talking to the hotel to find out his actions while he was staying there, they are trying to piece together everything they can about the shooter. We have been getting witness accounts all morning long, we are going to string some of those together so you can listen to the sounds of the people who were there and their accounts of what they saw. We are trying to put into words what we just experienced we cannot come up with it. Its like watching a war movie that you feel like you are in. You wrote something fictional but it really happened. We stepped over the bodies and saw the people and saw the heart wrenches sadness from relatives grabbing their loved one, there was chaos and disbelief and distress. Disbelieve is the only word i can come up with. I heard a pop, it sounded like a fire work. Then we heard a couple more pops at difference places in the stadium. Then is seemed like automatic gun fire, thats what we heard. We got down and took cover and tried to get out as best as we could. When the band started to get off the stage, we knew that the shots were coming in. We are hearing shots maybe at the stage but they got off the stage fast. I have not idea of time, it just never stopped just another round of bulls and another round of bullets, we just tried to help as many people as we could, the bulls finally stopped and we tried to help as many people as we could. Not until i got out to the audience area did i realize the extent of the casualties, bodies were laying in the grass, some we could help, others we could not. I do not think that anybody expected or could have fathomed this kind of experience at a Country Music<\/a> festival. If there is a silver lining, its the humanity, its how people were finding ways to help people. There was no chaos in leaving the event. The only people we saw that were injured were directly hit by bullets. These were not, definitely not trampling injuries, these were people running around going, we need another paramedic. It took a while for paramedics to get there. I am not blaming the First Responders<\/a>, its just that you wanted them there as quick as possible and it was like, we have way too many injuries that we can treat, there were not supplies or towels or bandages or doctors that we could find. Everyone who had any kind of experience was chipping in to help. People thought it was over, they are ducked down, the gun fire rings out, then they do not hear anything and they start their phones and then more gun fire, it kept going for 10 or 20 minutes. It sounded like a helicopter. The bullets were come coming in rapid fire. The firing started and stopped and then started again, he was changing the magazines on his rifles, people did not know where the shooting wa coming from. It was dark, police finally figured out it was coming from the mandalay bay. This is like what you have in a war time situation where an army is coming. They are running and they are running for cover, these people are not trained. They are not military or Police Officers<\/a>, there is only a certain amount of police that would be at this kind of event, these are people fending for themselves. I saw something horrible, an account of a survivor saying people kept dropping and dropping, one would drop a foot away from us, helping would have meant that we get shot. People were making decisions on what to do, one lady was fortunate enough to get to her car and people were hiding under her car to be safe. We are continuing to hear the news stories and we are continuing to wait for the president , he was supposed to speak at 7 30 but thats changing, we have our live shot and we will go live to that when it happens. He was found in his room with 10 rifles, he killed himself on the third second floor of the mandalay bay hotel. He retired several years ago, he was living in mesquite, nevada, in an upscale neighborhood, they said his home was like a 400,000 property that he shared with this woman. They were looking for her, they have located her she was out of the country, they spoke to her. What ever she said, now shes not a person of interest. Did isis have something to do with this . Theycame out and claimed responsibility. Las vegas was an area that maybe they wanted to hit but we do not know for sure if he would have been inspired by isis, he was a lone wolf. It was a solo attack, he would have could have been a solo attacker. But it was not spur of the moment. He checked into the hotel three days ago, police are going through his home trying to find the motive as to why someone would do Something Like<\/a> this. We have a new interview coming in from someone who was at the concert. Everyone was scared. It was raining down bullets. I do not know if he was unloading a full magazine or what but each time that happened, the crowd ducked down, my sister threw herself on top of me and she told me how much she loved me, she was doing something so noble to make sure i was okay. Some people were using their bodies as a shield. Others tried to get low. It was an improvised situation, there were wheel barrels set up, people used them to move the wounded people, they used, in wawn case, a luggage rack that the bell man carries with the copper top on it, they were wheeling a woman in that, trying to get her help. People were taking other people to the hospital because there is no way to have enough ambulances to transport the people that needed it. Over 400 people are injured, many of them are in the las vegas hospitals, some of them are not going to make it, they say that the death toll is expected to rise. So many concert venues across the United States<\/a> and so many concerts taking place on a daily basis across the country. The Mesquite Police<\/a> Department Just<\/a> wrapped up a News Conference<\/a>, they are in the town of mesquite where he lived. I will show you a picture of Stephen Paddock<\/a>, 64 years old, Police Believe<\/a> he was a lone gunman, they said so far they have located wems and ammunition, they were feelful that the home might have been booby trapped so they told nearby home owners to evacuate but they said, these are their words, nothing unusual about his home. It just looked like a home that people lived in. Not sure if he was by himself at the home, if he lived there by himself but its a Retirement Community<\/a>, upscale, a lot of golf courses in the area, they did not say if there was a motor suicide note but they made entry into the home. They found ammunition and guns at that location, he checked himself in on september 28th, three day ago, according to fbi, it was no accident that this man asked for a high floor, so he could look down at the concert goers, many of the victims were taken to the hospital. They are not only dealing with go shot wounds, they have trample wounds when people were fleeing for their lives, moments after the shots took place, they were desperating searching for a person desperately looking for a person who they thought was connected to the shooting, marilou danley, they have tracked her down, they believe shes not a person of interest, its a fluid situation but shes been ruled out as far as any connection to what happened with Stephen Paddock<\/a>, they believe he shot and killed himself before Police Officers<\/a> made entry into the room. But we do not have a motive at this point, thats the key question, a lot of people are asking, why . The girl next to me literally lost the side of her face from a bullet, we grabbed her, we jumped over the side railing and got under the stage, people were trying to run and get away. They came in in droves, there was a hissing sound, like something was released under the stage so we got out of there, and everyone was bleeding, theres so much chaos. The man behind me dropped down, and people came over and started doing cpr on him. The woman next to me was shot in her face and lost the side of her face, we try to get her over, everyone was helping everyone, we did not know it was gunfire. We never expected anything like that to happen. How long did this go on, how many rounds did you hear . It never stopped, it felt like forever. I have heard there were hundreds of rounds, he kept reloading, i thought for sure there were multiple people, it couldnt have come from one person it felt like, he was making his way in a kept getting closer and closer, i would see i would say at least 1 minute. Why did you come out from under the stage, i know you heard a hissing sound, but did you come out when the gunfire stopped thinking of the time to run . We came out because the swat team was relocating us, they told us to go back over, to an evacuation area, we can go all the way we crossed over and hopped into one of the buses behind the stage. They were amazing, they kept us safe and were trying to do what they could to help everyone going by. And get them to safety. When you first went into the concert, they always have security, what security was there in the concert . It was tremendous, they were searching all bags, patting down boots, extremely careful of anyone going into the concert. This was a sniper from up about up about, no one in the concert, everyone in the concert was helpful. Could you tell right away it was up above. Where did you think it was coming from at first . Everywhere. It felt like multiples sweeping through the crowd. There was shrapnel, it was getting hit it felt like, everyone was bleeding. I thought for sure there was someone walking through the crowd. Are you staying in las vegas, are you trying to get out . We werent allowed to leave the backstage area. We spent the night on one of the buses backstage, we heard our hotel was on lockdown, were staying at the luxor, the mandalay was on lockdown, everyone was on lockdown. We just got back to our room about 20 minutes ago. We are trying to get out as soon as possible. You say you are with a friend and she covered you on the ground, she used her body to cover you . She did. She threw her body over mine, and another man in the crowd, he threw himself over her, everyone was spreading out, we had several friends, one of our friends was a nurse and he stayed in he mustve triage over 75 people. Another friend of ours brought his truck and because the ambulances werent allowed to come in, they had to stay back in the safe zone, so friend got his truck and were loading people onto the truck. As he took them out to safety, he took probably 14 out. So this is a distance from the road and were ambulances were. We heard they were using wheelbarrows, anything they could, because you had to pick people up right . Yes. Mark is a retired sheriffs captain and Swat Team Commander<\/a> and he is on the phone right now, we want to talk about, security at these events number 1, number 2 how they were able to pinpoint the shooter at hotel, not near the event but next to it 32 floors up. How did they go floor by floor to locate the shooter . First they will get information from what is occurring on the ground, Law Enforcement<\/a>, First Responders<\/a> provide information to dispatch , and give them an idea of where the gunfire is coming from. I know a colleague that was there and they could clearly tell the gunfire was coming from above, the shots were raining down on them. They were able to relatively quickly identify where the shots were coming from, and get swat teams, tactical personnel over to the bay to work out to the 32nd floor. And target that individual. It sounds like he had pretty heavy weaponry from what you can hear from the audio from the video. From what i heard yes. Definitely a long rifle, magazine clip, i hear up to 10 weapons, so each of those magazines probably fully loaded and giving him the ability to potentially go back and forth, it looked like there were 2 windows, he couldve had 2 weapons set up. Reverting back and forth and reloading in between if necessary. Which is why to the people on the ground, they thought it was a ring of bullets coming from everywhere. Tell me more about the enforcement officer you know who is there and more about what they wouldve heard and known immediately. I was getting Text Messages<\/a> that he was there, it was chaotic, just a mob and they were just trying, they may have been there for the 3 days, they knew the venue well, they were trying to find the best exit out of there. Also, both individuals are Law Enforcement<\/a> personnel, they are trying to calm people down and get them to the exit, and get it flowing. Many of those 400 casualties, are probably related to getting trampled on because of the hysteria going on getting out of the venue. As a Swat Team Commander<\/a> and as you prepare for these things, is this a situation you wouldve mark danon in the past or is this a new situation that swat teams will china for in the future . Swat teams are completely trained for the situation, particularly in the Las Vegas Metro<\/a> area, highrise buildings, they have plans, floor plans, they been completely prepared for an incident like this. They were not necessarily prepared for a sniper situation on a 22,000 person venue. I dont know the timelines here but it appeared they got there pretty quickly, and they need to be very tactically savvy, approach that room and all the floors carefully to make sure, boobytraps arent set up, devices set for them. It seems they got there and a quick response. By the same token it seems impossible, i know that swat teams are prepared but for an event to prepare for this, to be secured. What this guy did, frankly was so easy. It is a free country, people check into hotels, they have tons of bags, he couldve gone up to the room no problem with 1 dozen rifles in his luggage. That is correct. From the information were getting, it was over a 3 to 40 period he was there. He couldve gone up and down, bringing multiple packages of luggage up and down, and no one would pay any attention. As we know, you could avoid room service and room cleaning, that doesnt send any indication to staff. He had all the time in the world to set up and prepare for this tragic event. It makes us wonder, how far you go, what kind of security, how does this change the face of big Event Security<\/a>. I think location may be something to consider now at this point. Tactically, any person who has a high ground has the advantage. We may want to look at, locations at venues like this, take it into consideration before we identify it as a venue for large crowds. That is something. Have it more in a deserted area, not between buildings or in an area where there are large buildings. That is something to thank about. Here in the bay area, you are with the San Mateo County<\/a> sheriff and youre retired, then a Swat Team Commander<\/a> we have so many big events. So many and so many highrises. We recently had the super bowl, we have president ial visits, all kinds of things, situations where we are taking this into consideration. This definitely will broaden our scope of planning, and again, it would be difficult to search every hotel room associated with events in that proximity, one president ial visit, there is that emphasis that goes into it where we are paying attention to the surroundings in high ground situations. They went in his home, they had a search warrant and made entry into his home over the past couple of hours, they said they located ammunition and guns but they simply do not have a motive for the shooting. They are looking to see if theres any possible material that may indicate why he chose to go to the mandalay bay september 28, 3 days before the massacre took place. The 32nd floor to look down on concertgoers, 22,000 of them plus at the concert around 10 pm last night when shots were fired. We know at least 50 people are dead and more than 400 injured. A lot of the people in the hospital at this moment not only do they have gunshot wounds, they are dealing with trampled patients. A lot of the hospitals are overwhelmed with the volume of people coming to that location, the fbi has been called in to help, they want to be the center for any video, witnesses possibly dealing with the fbi, as they call the clearinghouse for the information. As far as this 64yearold man he has no criminal history, nothing to jump out at this particular point, that he was an avid huntsman and lived in mesquite for a while, an upscale community, gulf resorts, they had to evacuate some nearby homes as they made entry into the homes, fearing he could have boobytrapped things with explosive. Trying to put into words what we experienced and we cant. We cant come up with it. Its like watching a war movie, you feel like it was fictional, and it didnt really happen but it did. We stepped over the bodies, we saw the people, heart wrenching sadness, for those that cant hold their loved ones. You saw the chaos in disbelief. Disbelief is the only word you can come up with. There is a gentleman who was shot and he said can you help me. I put them in my car and i at 6 people in my car, people without shoes, running, just to get away. She had 6 people in her car, so many people took others to safety or the hospital. She said when she got in her car people were hiding underneath her car and she to make sure they were out before she drove off. There is a nearby airport, people running onto the runway, running over fences, doing what they could, we talked to teresa sister and she was hiding under the stage, they were lucky to get the swat team to escort them out, but these other people were in a mob and they were all trying to hit exits and get out at the same time. The gunfire as far as they knew was coming from everywhere, they didnt know it was coming from one hotel room 34 32 floors up. 22,000 concertgoers fenced in and the stage area, for this threeday concert with the final concert taking place, jason aldean as he performed in shots rang out. We have a picture, one picture that has surfaced this morning, taken in a bar or something. You can see, he is 64 years old, our man, a las vegas, a native of nevada, lived in mesquite and shared a home, a 400,000 home in a Retirement Community<\/a>, with a woman who investigators have talked to, she is out of the country and they dont think she was connected but he was using some of her idu or somethings with her names on it, he booked the hotel room under her name. A hotel room he may have been in for 3 days, bringing up the weapons, maybe in separate shifts so no one would notice. He wouldve had a number of bags to bring in, more than 10 weapons, big long rifles. They may have been fitted to shoot as many bullets as they did without reloading, military expert said it sounded like a belt military style weapon he was using so he wouldnt be noticed. Maybe no room service are not having his room cleaned, to our knowledge no one knew about it even his family. I was just informed it maybe 59, an individual expired at sunrise hospital. In normal fashion i do not want to give you that information, see do not press me on that number until we get further into the investigation. The number of injured, we are using the number of 515. As the hours go by that number continues to increase. We have not received additional intelligence associated with the suspect. We have completed the search warrant in mesquite, im not aware of derogatory information we could utilize to further this investigation at this point but we have recovered items and will take a little while to evaluate that information. We learned information of additional property in northern nevada, the fbi has responded to the location and will be serving search warrant shortly. We completed the investigation at the room, we collected all the items associated with the suspect and we are in the recovery stage of that. Mandalay bay itself has gone back to service, minus the 32nd floor. They would like everyone advised, if they are separated from their hotel room they have the ability to return to the hotel. The location in question, the concert hall, we will be in the long process of buttery recovery body recovery and evidence recovery and documentation. We ask for patients as we bring information forward. Its a long, laborious process to identify victims and reunite them with family members to advise them of their situation. We still have the families responding to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police<\/a> headquarters, to conduct a reunification of family or friends. We spoke live with a woman who is at the concert, she describes the scene. There was shrapnel, i was getting hit, everyone was bleeding, i thought for sure there was someone walking to the crowd. What happens now are you staying in las vegas are trying to get out . We werent allowed to leave the backstage area, we heard that our hotel was on lockdown and were staying at the luxor. Mandalay was on lockdown, everyone around us on lockdown. We got back to her room about 20 minutes ago, we are trying to get out as soon as possible. You say you are with a friend and she covered you. She used her body to cover you . She did. She threw her body over mine, another man in the crowd, threw himself over her, everyone was spreading out, we have several friends, one of her friends was a nurse and he said he mustve triage over 75 people. Another friend of ours brought his truck and because ambulances couldnt come in, they had to stay back in the saison so friend got his truck and were loading people onto the truck and the triage man as the took them to safe distances. He took about 14 people out. This is a distance of the road, we heard they were using wheelbarrows or anything they could, because you had to pick people up right . Yes. There were many that couldnt walk, people were doing cpr, doing anything they could to get them to safety. We are glad you are okay, thank you for sharing your story with us. Weve been hearing from a lot of people from the bay area who were in las vegas including mike doherty who joins us on the phone. Where were you and what happened . We had just got back to the mandalay bay, weve been out the whole night since shortly after it happened. We were at the concert, 25 yards from the front center and we heard the staccato verse to the right. Everyone instinctively took a knee and then people started laying down, and then the gunfire continued. Then it started a mass exodus to the left, to the northern exit. That was when we are screaming dont get trampled, dont be a victim keep moving, keep running. We got split up. A couple of the couples stay together, i lost my wife in the melee, most of the people to cover, there were people falling to the right and left and you could hear the bullets ricocheting. As they came into the auditorium. We assumed there was a shooter on the ground, i dont know what theyre finding out now but apparently it couldve come from the top of the hotel but we didnt know that. I went out of the gate, people were down, i started administering medical care, giving Emergency Medical Technicians<\/a> to people that were shot. A lot of them were running out and bleeding, we are trying to identify and help those people get to a point they could have stability. It was a good effort, there were cars coming to load people up. Chaos there, people panicking, it was a little out of control. For the most part, we tried to keep calm, i stayed at the exit, and we turned it into a triage area. 45 minutes after the shooting they were still bringing people from the front up near the stage to the back and using wheelbarrows. The gates that separate people, and the venues were broken apart. We were using stretchers, bringing people up, im not a medical technician but i was trying to provide some calm and help people that needed it and assist with injuries, one lady was shot 3 times in the chest. A lot of shoulder shots, ricochets from the bullets hit people in the feet. The traumatic thing is you go through, people are coming up, trying to deal with that and get the bodies organized, so the emts and ambulances know whats going on. You are speaking so calmly, you say are not in the medical profession, how are you able to be so calm, you are separated from your wife. I dont know, maybe just being prepare for crazy stuff sometimes, i dont know. Cerney certainly not her rogue stuff just helping folks and be a good citizen. Help the guys that were hurt. At times it would stop and then start over, how long did it go on for . He was obviously changing magazines. He probably had anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds and then heard the shots and that would ring out again. It sounds like maybe you dont know the latest, it was meant one man on the 32nd floor of your hotel were you were staying, the mandalay bay hotel, you described everyone crouching down and not moving, you were sitting ducks, and he was shooting down. Got the idea, lets crawl under the bleachers, get some protection. We crawled under the bleachers, we were hovering with maybe 30, 40 or 50 people and it was pandemonium. Everyone was running, screaming and crying. You knew constantly kept hearing rounds and rounds, and then 30 seconds of breaks, 60 seconds, and this went on for at least 15 minutes. This gunfire. In our minds, is there one shooter, 10 shooters, what is going on. You dont have any idea you just see people, people in front of you covered in blood, laying there and their friends are crying and trying to help them.
