Were getting close to an historic moment after more than 50 years, the cuban and american embassies will finally be able to fly their flags once again. We have more from washington for what this means for the for nations. Reporter it is a historic day here in washington. For the first time in more than 50 years, the cuban flag will fly in front of this building here in front of me. And the people of cuba will officially have an embassy here in washington. Today begins a new era between cuba and the United States. After decades of tension, a u. S. Embassy will open its doors in havana and the u. S. Capitol will host a cuban delegation to commemorate the reopening of theirs. Its a historic shift for two countries who broke off relations in 1961. Though physically only 90 miles apart, the cold war, the crash between capitalism and commism kept the cultures isolated. This year the Obama Administration and the castro regime worked to loosen travel restrictions and warm the cold war era tensions. In midmay the United States formally removed cuba from its list of state sponsors of terror. I believe we can do more to support the cuban people and promote our values through engagements. After all, these 50 years have shown that isolation has not worked. Its time for a new approach. Reporter today the cuban interest section in washington will be transformed into the Cuban Embassy and the American Embassy will be back on the cuban water upon. This is by no means a settled political matter here in washington. There are several members of congress from both parties that could set up roadblocks to the normalization of relations between these to countries.
