The french bringing two months of confinement to an end. Thfrench government has released this map of hospital admissions, a key part of the strategy. Paris and surrounding areas still have infection rates that are too high. They are classified as a red zone and strict conditions will continue to apply there. The president calledor a progressive unwinding of the lockdown. In light of the data from our Health Services gathered in the last few days, the gradual lift of lockdown can commence from the monday, the 1h of may. This is good news for france on the french people. From monday, we will introduce a high progressive process which will allow the country to exit smoothly from the lockdown we experienced, along with a large part of the world, since march 17. Host the paris metro is preparing for commuters to use the service again. Workers have been putting up stickers to explain how people should be socially distancing. What do people think . Our correspondent is in central france. We already have 5 million passengers using the metro. I think we must tell parisians to be careful because there is going to be, i think, a lot of people. What can i say . It will be difficult because public transport is often overcrowded. People have to go to work, so they have to be there. Listen, i dont know, honestly. I think it will pose problems for those who have to work. For m it is a one off. What you see today is a map of different criteria of how the virus is spreading and th capacity of hospitals to cope, and the capacity to test. Those are three criteria that we have used to draw a red and green zones. The red zone is all of the northeast of france, including the area around paris, but also east toward the german border and north toward the belgian border. That is an area where the number of cases is going down. Because it is the capital city, all eyes are going to be o the movement of people and the new rules on monday. There are fears things could ta off again in paris. The rest of the country is green. The difference between green and red is that in the red zones, including paris, some schools will not reopen. Host we have lots more on what is happening in paris and across the world on our website. Check out the bbc news website. Here in the u. K. , plans are also being drawn up to begin relaxing the lockdown in england. Today, we heard from the foreign minister that the total coronavirus death the u. K. Has risen to 30,615. This is after a further 539 people died. Our Political Correspondent has been looking at what relaxing the lockdown in england might look like. One familiar feature of the lockdown will change this weekend. The government will retire the stay home slogan. But miniers are stressing that any move will be gradual. We are urging caution. The safest thing to do yes, get out, get the daily exeise. If you cannot work from home, the guidelines are there for that purpose. But we have to continue doing everything we can to ensure peoples safety. The Prime Minister talked about changes in england from monday. One likely change to expand allowed activities. But the key message is keep your distance. Stay two meters apart. Otherwise, your newfound freedom could be shortlived. Host n only are there Health Concerns around relaxing the lockdown, there are economic ones as well. The u. K. Is in an unprecedented recession that has not been seen before. Experts predict the economy will fall for the first half of the year due to the impact of the virus, but the bank of england thinks the economy will bounce back. This is unprecedented in the history of this institution. But it is different in two respects. The initial fall happened because we went into lockdown weekly. The recovery and theact that it is supported by the sensible things the government has done, means Economic Activity will resume much moreuickly. The bank of engla sees unemployment doubling to rates not since the 1990s, which took two years to then fall back. If you look at the chart, it looks right scary. The chart reflects the reality we have been in since march. I can tell you that the government and the bank of england have put in place a package of measures and we will go on utterly focused on that. Host our Political Correspondent was monitoring that. He joins us live now. What is behind the government laxing the lockdown . Are we talking about health or economic reasons the first thing to say is this is not going to be some dramatic change in the long term. The government is being incredibly careful to signal to lower expectations. The phrase the foreign secretary used was that any changes would be modest, small, and incremental. As to what is driving this, in many ways, its the same thing every country faces. How do you nce trying to stop the Health System from being overwhelmed with fears of economic collapse . There are worries about health and worries about stress on the national Health System, but also, the government wants to see wha it can do to ease restrictions. Host stay with us because a new udy has revealed that men from afrocaribbean background are four times more likely to die from covid19 in england or wales than white people. The are similar disparities with women. The head of Health Analysis explains. That group is now 90 more likely to die from covid19 issues. Bangladesh and pakistani males are more likely by 80 . Females 80 females 60 more likely. Once we have adjusted for those factors. Host one possible reason for this disparity is the large number of ethnic minorities who work i the Health Sector. Here is the chair of pakistani physicians and surgeons in the u. K. Obviously, we are quite concerned in terms of the figures specificall showing health staff. This stuff is about 44 of the nhs workfor. 72 of the staff who have die are from this commity. This is a discrepancy compared to the white population. Host this is an extremely worrying finding tha was touched upon today at the daily briefing. What is the government doing to counter the vulnerability to covid . Are we talking about a socioeconomic rather than a health issue . Let me do that one briefly. The first thing to note is that the figure says you are four times more likely to die if you are black. But if you consider socioeconomic factors or the kind of job youre doing, the housing you live in, than then the number goes down to about half. In other words, you are twice as likely to die. All of those other factors being set aside. And the government doesnt know why. So when you ask, what is the government doing, the Health Authorities are trying to discover this. Its beyond issues of poverty or working in the Health Sector or public transport. What is the explanation for the higher rate among ethnic minorities . At the moment, the government does not have an answer. Host thank you for joining us. You are uptodate with the situation in the u. K. Now, the toll of the coronavirus on the worlds biggest economy has been immense. The latest jobs figures out of the u. S. Show another 3. 2 million americans filed for unemployment this week. This means that 33 Million People, one in five workers in america, have lost their jobs since the lockdown brought t economy to a standstill seven weeks ago. Thats a massive turn of events. Two months ago, america was boasting an Unemployment Rate of 3. 5 , the lowest in 30 years. Economists fear that figure could reach 50 or higher. The question has turned to this. A top u. S. Economist tweets, how quickly do the unemployed get jobs . How many drop out of the labor force . What happens . Lets touch on some of that with katty kay who joins us live from washington. Despite the recent reopenings we are seeing across the u. S. , the number of people filing for benefits continues to rise. It feels like people are not returning to the workforce. Tomorrow, we are going to get the unemployment figures for the month of april and speculation is icould be up to 14 15 . That is similar to the great depression. Its a huge blow to the economy. You are right. About half of americastates are starting to reopen businesses, but all of the indication so far from states that opened a couple of weeks ago is that consumers are not going back to businesses. The government is saying we think it is state for you to start reopening with restrictions, but consumers are saying we dont feel safe going to restaurants, hairdressers, nail salons. People aretarting to are not starting to generate income, so people are not being employed again. A pole has come out suggesting that poll has come out showing that most americans who have been laid off feel that the economy that they will be rehired when the economy starts to recover. Will this be a vshaped recovery . That is what the white house is hoping for. Many economists and Business Leaders are more skeptical. Host stay there, because i want to talk to you about another development from the United States. New research has linked cases in new york city before the outbreak began to the spread across america. Researchers said new york was the primary source of new infections taking the virus from the city to the Southern States and even as far as the west coast. These New York Times graphics show more detail. The infections linked to new york city are those highlighted in red. Those originating in washington are highlighted in yellow. Here are the outbreaks. As you can see, every sample taken from louisiana was related to new york. Here you have the northeast states most to new york. Lets get katty kay back. Given that the numbers in new york given the numbers in new york, this is no huge surprise, but it relates to the timing of social distancing measures there. Yes, and also how this virus spread from big cities. We have seen this around the world. Wuhan, milan, they became focus points from which the rest of the country got infected. We thought initially this would be a virus that came to the u. S. From china via Washington State then spread, what what the New York Times reporting shows us is that it came from china, through europe, and then european flights that came into new york during january, february, march, and those people traveled all around the country from new york, taking the virus with them. The ication of this reporting is that by the time the president stopped flights of people coming from europe on march 30, by then it was already too late. The virusas already in new york and traveling around the country. Its an interesting report for policymakers to look at as the country starts reopening, because it is a reminder, of course, that this is a country of 50 states where people move freely from one state to another. They took the virus freely from new york state to other states around the country. If you reopen some places that become a hotspot, there is a risk that people can travel quite freely to other states with no restrictions and take the virus around the country again. Host the applications are huge. The u. S. Justice department has Just Announced it is dropping the case against president trumps former security advisor, Michael Flynn. Mr. Trump said he is very hay for him. Remind us about this case. The case of Michael Flynn was one of the biggest cases surrounding the investigation as to whether the Trump Campaign had unlawful contact with russia during the 2016 election campgn. Michael flynn had been having contacts with the Russian Ambassador to the United States and with other russian officials, and he did not tell the white house about it. He lied to the fbi about it. In 2017, he admitted lying about it. He had been Donald TrumpsNational Security advisor. He was caught up in the mueller investigation. He admitted in 2017 that he lied to the fbi about his contacts with russians during the campaign and pleaded guilty to that. Even so, the Justice Department is saying they feel mr. Flynn did not fully understand what the fbi was asking him, and that is why they have decided to drop the case. It seems quite political. General flynn was a favorite of Donald Trumps. Donald trump today described him as a warrior and said he felt he had been wrongly charged in the first place. A big win for the white house and for donald trump. All of the politics of the mueller investigation, still rippling through the election process here in the United States. Host feels like a different world ago. Stay with us here on outside source. Still to come, we will be telling you why pakistan is lifting its lockdown even though infections there are rising. Host the government in the indian state has threatened to laun criminal proceedings against a south Korean Chemical Company after a disastrous gas leak. 30 people have died. Our main story, france is emerging from lockdown on monday although the capital, paris, will still face heavy restrictions. Every country is responding to covid19 in a different way, so we are seeing a range of approaches playing out in parall. Lets focus on three. Our correspondent joins us live. Which three countries have you chosen . One of the most important factors of this pandemic is that all countries are facing the same virus, but they are all handling it in a different way. We are going to look at this through the prism of result, india, but first, pakistan. Pakistan is easing its lockdown this weekend. Bear in mind, in pakistan, the number of cases continue to go up. The Prime Minister is saying the lockdown has to be eased because a large number of people just cannot afford to continue living like this. Lets hear from our pakistan correspondent. Initially, there were fairly strict restrictions in place. Last month, a number of industries and some Small Businesses were alwed to start up again. Now, pretty much all shops and businesses will be allowed to reopen. Shopping mls will remain closed, as will schools and universities. I think this was done for a couple of reasons. One, the lockdown restrictions were initially passed last month and caused some confusion in shops that were technically not meant to be opening up again. They opened up anyway. It was tricky for the authorities to enforce to force other Small Businesses to remain closed. It also tied in with the issue we have been talking about from the outset. The Prime Minister says around 25 of the country is living below the Poverty Level and simply cannot affnot to work. From pakistan to india. It had started to repatriate hundreds of thousands of citizens. It has stopped incoming passenger flights in recent weeks, but it is now trying to get people home. The first planes left for dubai today. They wi be carrying indian citizens back home. This is the first evacuation, first repatriation happening from this partf the world. If you talk about the uae, 200,000 indians have registered to get repatriated. The Indian Government has said they will be flying 15,000 people across the globe in the next week. 200,000 are spread across the world, stranded in different countries. A huge section of those indians are stranded in this country. Now to brazil. Its number of cases is rising fast. It has now reached over 120 5000 confirmed cases and over 8000 deaths. President bolsonaro is refusing to institute a lockdown. Some states simply are not waiting. They are starting to close schools and public spaces anyway. Our correspondent katy watson spoke to the governor in charge of sao paulo. This is a man who is a former ally of the president but has now imposed restrictions. When you have two viruses to combat, the coronavirus and the bolsonaro virus, this is not politics. This is to protect people and to give people the opportunity to survive. He will argue that people will die of hunger, of misery, with no jobs. We have to give pple life. We cannot but the economy first and health second. That is the latest from brazil, pakistan, and india. While historians
