"cbs evening news" starts now. international pressure builds on hamas to accept a cease-fire and hostage proposal laid out by president biden. tonight the terror group says it's ready to negotiate. good evening, i am norah o'donnell. thank you for being with us. we want to begin with the new diplomatic push to stop the israel-hamas war. and renewed hope that more hostages could be released. the u.n. security council just approve the latest plan and america's top diplomat secretary of state antony blinken is back in the middle east trying to close the deal tonight. this comes as we are getting dramatic new video of the daring raid that freed four is really hostages over the weekend. which came at a staggering cost for palestinian civilians. cbs's chris livesay's leads us off from tel aviv. >> new footage shows the moment is really commandos storm the apartment building holding three male hostages. they call out their names. "we came here to rescue you" they respond, before the gunfire up to cover their harrowing escape. it was a rescue operation of the highest stakes, and nearly failed. weeks of rehearsing on mock-ups are believed to have worked at a college in iowa. cbs's nicole sganga on what we have learned. >> video on social media appears to show at least three instructors laying on the ground. one soaked in blood, and other bracing his back, all of them frantically making calls or texting on their cell phones. the stabbing reportedly took place on monday, a state holiday. the cornell college staffers were making a daytime visit to a public park in jail and city, china. in a statement, the iowa based school said instructors were traveling overseas as part of a teaching partnership with the chinese university. when all were injured in a serious incident. no college students were involved in the program. at the state department tonight said they are monitoring the situation. i will congresswoman mariannette miller-meeks said her office is working with the u.s. embassy to ensure victims to receive care for their injuries and depart china safely, norah. >> norah: scary story, nicole sganga, thank you so much. tonight miami firefighters on the scene of a massive three-alarm fire at a an apartment complex after it went up in flames this morning. there's no word on what started the fire, but a man was found with a gunshot wound to his torso. cbs's peter dench is at the scene. >> reporter: huge flames and thick black smoke shot up from the rooftop of of this 4--story apartment building this morning. as dozens of firefighters battled the place for hours, joel henrique and his family went down four floors to escape the fire. >> my nose is burning. >> has been shot in the torso. >> reporter: police say a man found with a gunshot wound was in the building. take into an area hospital and it appeared is unclear if he had anything to do with the fire. >> we are not able to speak to the mail because it appears he is in critical condition. >> reporter: firefighters going for by florida look for people, risking 40 people, some from their balconies. they were taken to the hospital suffering from heat exhaustion. >> this is the biggest apartment fire i've seen in 25 years. it's a large event for us and they are doing a heroic job in dealing with it. >> reporter: you part of the building is still smoldering and suspects of the shooting has been taken into custody by miami police, we can also tell you that authorities say the cause of the fire is under investigation. norah. spilling quite a fire, peter dench, thank you so much. new developments in the federal gun trial of hunter biden after just an hour of deliberating come the jury went home for the night it will be back in court tomorrow to decide the fate of president biden's only surviving son. the 54-year-old is accused of lying about his drug use on a federal form while buying a gun and 2018, the lawyers argue he was in recovery and not using drugs at the time. cbs's scott macfarlane is at the courthouse in wilmington. >> will you testify? >> reporter: with his freedom on the line, president biden son hamas captivity and why the mission almost fell apart. plus with palestinian civilians killed in the raid, could the united states push for a cease-fire ban jeopardy. "cbs evening news" starts now. international pressure builds on hamas to accept a cease-fire and hostage proposal laid out by president biden. tonight the terror group says it's ready to negotiate. good evening, i am norah o'donnell. thank you for being with us. we want to begin with the new diplomatic push to stop the israel-hamas war. and renewed hope that more hostages could be released. the u.n. security council just approve the latest plan and america's top diplomat secretary of state antony blinken is back in the middle east trying to close the deal tonight. this comes as we are getting dramatic new video of the daring raid that freed four is really hostages over the weekend. which came at a staggering cost for palestinian civilians. cbs's chris livesay's leads us off from tel aviv. >> new footage shows the moment is really commandos storm the apartment building holding three male hostages. they call out their names. "we came here to rescue you" they respond, before the gunfire up to cover their harrowing escape. it was a rescue operation of the highest stakes, and nearly failed. weeks of rehearsing on mock-ups have prepared the elite forces to move in broad daylight. says door and i'll be a former special command officer. >> whatever it required. >> reporter: at the same time they were being freed in one building, noa argamani was being rescued 200 miles away and another. they were pulling diamonds, a message relayed over the video, we have the diamonds in her hands. >> once you have the hostages, you hamas. norah. >> norah: some hopeful signs, chris livesay, thank you. now to some breaking news, details about an attack on four american teachers in china. they were stabbed in a public park all four are believed to have worked at a college in iowa. cbs's nicole sganga on what we have learned. >> video on social media appears to show at least three instructors laying on the ground. one soaked in blood, and other bracing his back, all of them frantically making calls or texting on their cell phones. the stabbing reportedly took place on monday, a state holiday. the cornell college staffers were making a daytime visit to a public park in jail and city, china. in a statement, the iowa based school said instructors were traveling overseas as part of a teaching partnership with the chinese university. when all were injured in a serious incident. no college students were involved in the program. at the state department tonight said they are monitoring the situation. i will congresswoman mariannette miller-meeks said her office is working with the u.s. embassy to ensure victims to receive care for their injuries and depart china safely, norah. >> norah: scary story, nicole sganga, thank you so much. tonight miami firefighters on the scene of a massive three-alarm fire at a an apartment complex after it went up in flames this morning. there's no word on what started the fire, but a man was found with a gunshot wound to his torso. cbs's peter dench is at the scene. >> reporter: huge flames and thick black smoke shot up from the rooftop of of this 4--story apartment building this morning. as dozens of firefighters battled the place for hours, joel henrique and his family went down four floors to escape the fire. >> my nose is burning. >> has been shot in the torso. >> reporter: police say a man found with a gunshot wound was in the building. take into an area hospital and it appeared is unclear if he had anything to do with the fire. >> we are not able to speak to the mail because it appears he is in critical condition. >> reporter: firefighters going for by florida look for people, risking 40 people, some from their balconies. they were taken to the hospital suffering from heat exhaustion. >> this is the biggest apartment fire i've seen in 25 years. it's a large event for us and they are doing a heroic job in dealing with it. >> reporter: you part of the building is still smoldering and suspects of the shooting has been taken into custody by miami police, we can also tell you that authorities say the cause of the fire is under investigation. norah. spilling quite a fire, peter dench, thank you so much. new developments in the federal gun trial of hunter biden after just an hour of deliberating come the jury went home for the night it will be back in court tomorrow to decide the fate of president biden's only surviving son. the 54-year-old is accused of lying about his drug use on a federal form while buying a gun and 2018, the lawyers argue he was in recovery and not using drugs at the time. cbs's scott macfarlane is at the courthouse in wilmington. >> will you testify? >> reporter: with his freedom on the line, president biden son he got the firearm, they singled out two text messages showing one day after he purchased the gun he sent a message saying he was meeting a dealer named mooke and one day after that a text message saying he was sleeping on a car smoking crack. the jury deliberated about an hour before the judge send them home to resume their work tomorrow. deciding a case that could result in the president's spent the day at his home in mar-a-lago, but he did talk with todd blanchette to his side, lasting less than half an hour, answering questions about its personal background, criminal record, and employment history, they will prepare a report for judge juan merchan on with a sentencing recommendation. and new polling shows a majority of likely voters feel that the conviction is not a major factor in november's election. the top issues being the economy and inflation where trump has an edge. and you can tell in the coming days, sources tell cbs news that both donald trump and president collapse between wyoming and eastern idaho, one of the biggest tourist seasons in the area, norah. images of the gaping hole where they're familiar wyoming highwat the mountain communities who rely on it in shock. all that remains at the scenic route through the teton pass is roughly an 80-foot drop that plummets into the valley below. authorities say the road was closed during the time of the
