case, is to call the defendant himself to testify. >> margaret: plus, hunter biden's daughter takes the stand. what she said that made her father emotion all. the evening news starts now. ♪ ♪ good evening, and thank you for being with us. i'm margaret brennan in for norah o'donnell. the prosecution rested in the federal gun trial of hunter biden. his eldest daughter took the stand today to testify in his defense. naomi biden told the jury about visiting her father while he was in rehab, just weeks before the gun purchase at the center of the case. she said, "he seems like the clearest i had seen him since my uncle died." and then i told him i was so proud of him. an emotional moment that came after prosecutors wrapped their case with testimony from law enforcement officials, who spoke about drug residue and text messages between hunter biden and his alleged dealers. cbs a scott macfarlane was inside the courtroom and will start us off tonight. >> reporter: 30-year-old naomi biden, the president's granddaughter, was called into the stand as the defense tries to spare her father hunter biden from prison. admitting she was nervous, her voice barely audible at times, naomi biden testified her father struggled with drug addiction, but never took illegal drugs in front of her. hunter biden appeared to be emotional at times during her testimony. she acknowledged that after her uncle beau biden died, things got bad for her father. >> i think naomi biden provided a lot of sympathy, but not a lot of hard evidence that would exculpate her father. >> reporter: prosecutors are trying to prove hunter biden was addicted or using drugs at the time he bought a gun in october 2018, lying on this federal background check. today, and fbi curtain of gnomic forensic chemist testified traces of cocaine were found in the poet holding hunter biden's gun. however no mike hallie biden, beau biden's widow, seen in surveillance video throwing it out after he found the gun in the president's son's truck. i'm a stand today, naomi biden testified her father seemed to lack of time, potentially bolstering the defense's argument hunter biden thought he was recovering from drug use when he bought the gun. naomi biden said she used her fathers truck just days before the gun was discovered and that she saw no drugs, or paraphernalia in it. the defense says it may call hunter biden to testify next week. former prosecutor tom dupree says that would expose biden to a very tough questions for prosecutors. >> when you put the defendant on the stand to testify in his own defense, you are risking opening a pandora's box. >> reporter: there are no other defense witnesses, so this case could go to closing arguments by the end of the day monday, and into the hands of the delaware jury. margaret? >> margaret: scott macfarlane in delaware tonight. well, president biden paid tribute today to the army rangers who stormed the beaches of normandy 80 years ago this week. andrew parallels between nazi germany's invasion of europe then to russia's invasion of ukraine today. cbs's ed o'keefe reports the president's message to the world was clear: a plea to defend democracy. >> reporter: president biden's helicopter swooped over the 100-foot sheer cliffs of pointe du hoc, scaled by american army rangers 80 years ago. and celebrated by the commander in chief today. >> i have long said that history has shown that ordinary americans can do extraordinary things when challenged. there is no better example of that to the entire world than right here at pointe du hoc. >> reporter: he used the stunning backdrop to argue the best way americans can honor their sacrifice is to sustain democracy at home and in places like ukraine. >> hateful ideology of the '30z '40s. does anyone doubt they would move heaven and earth to banish hateful ideologies of today? >> margaret: an unusual amount of foreign travel in an election year, ed, we'll be watching. supreme court justice clarence thomas disclosed for the first time that he took luxury trips to bali and california on the dime of his longtime friend, a billionaire republican megadonor. this was part of the latest financial filings required of the supreme court justices, who have faced scrutiny regarding ethics. cbs's jan crawford reports tonight from the supreme court. >> reporter: just as my justice clarence thomas amended his disclosure reports to show he accepted to luxury trips in 2019 from longtime friend and conservative valine or harlan crow, including a one night stay at a hotel in bali indonesia and three nights in exclusive private club in california. thomas did not report any travel from crow in 2023, suggesting a new disclosure rule or increased scrutiny on the justices may have had an impact. the reports released today also revealed four of the justices earned between $87,000 to almost $900,000 on book deals and royalties, with justice ketanji brown jackson leading the way for the advance on her upcoming memoir. justice brett kavanaugh was next, with a $340,000 advance for his legal memoir, due out next year. jackson also reported beyonce gave four concert tickets valued at just under $4,000. and justice soto sotomayor earned nearly $1900 for voicing a character on a pbs cartoon. now, eight of the nine justices disclosures were made public today. justice sam alito, as is allowed under filing rule, got an extension. margaret? >> margaret: grant norma jan crawford, very busy as always at the supreme court. secretary of state antony blinken will press for a cease-fire and a hostage release when he travels monday to the middle east. meanwhile, the israeli offensive against hamas continues. today, israel defended its bombing of the united nations affiliated school where palestinian civilians had taken shelter. cbs's chris livesay reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: israeli forces shown no signs of slowing their pursuit of hamas around rafah, just a day after international scrutiny over an heir site on a school where thousands palestinians of civilians had been sheltering. hiding behind them thousands of terrorists, using civilians as human shields, says a an israeli spokesman. >> they hide behind. >> reporter: rhetorical independent experts, u.s. made bombs, same used at a camp for palestinians last. america behind some of israel's munitions and causes meals. that long-awaited pier broke apart overseas. today it is reconnected. however in a mere eight days the pier was previously operational, only a small number of aid trucks actually made it into gaza. several of them were looted. it's amid this humanitarian crisis that benjamin netanyahu will come to washington next month to address a joint meeting of congress. it's unknown if the israeli prime minister will meet with president biden, given biden's growing frustration over netanyahu's conduct of the war, says really did flat and staunch netanyahu critic alon pinkas. netanyahu's political future may become even more tenuous tomorrow, margaret, with benny gantz, a member of his war cabinet, is set to resign in protest over his handling of the war. >> margaret: chris livesay, thank you. now a look at tonight's other top stories. starting with record-breaking heat from heat from coast to coast. cbs's kris van cleave is in arizona as the southwest sizzles. >> reporter: margaret, phoenix is at the top 110 again today. the state has deployed the first of 18 new pop-up cooling centers. they are modified cargo containers that are solar-powered and can be quickly deployed. last summer's record stretch of extreme temperatures so heat related deaths spike by 50% here in maricopa county. now some cooling centers are staying open later into the evening. >> we see the heat increase pretty quickly here in arizona at its deadly from the start. so the cooling centers here are very integral parts of keeping our community safe. >> reporter: in las vegas where it's never been this hot this early, ambulance crews are seeing a nearly 20% spike in heat related calls. >> margaret: out to the jobs report out today that was way better-than-expected. cbs's jo ling kent has a closer look at what it means. >> reporter: the jobs reports smashed expectations but one is a mixed bag when it comes to how the economy is doing, margaret. no doubt 272,000 jobs added in may is good news. the most hiring happened in health care, leisure, and hospitality, but the federal reserve will also be looking at the unemployment ratd up to 4% for the first time since 2022 and wage growth that increased more than expected. that will likely be a factor in the fed's interest rate decision next week and economists widely expect the fed to keep rates at these higher levels because of stubborn inflation. >> margaret: and tonight, the category is television icons. and cbs's carter evans has the answer. >> reporter: no one has ever hosted the same game show for so long, margaret. 41 seasons, more than 8,000 episodes, but tonight, pat sajak takes the wheel for a final spin. >> well, the time has come to say goodbye. >> reporter: and for millions of fans... >> we'll! of! fortune! >> reporter: the show will never be the same. sajak took over the show in the early 1980s. his cohost, vanna white, with him nearly the entire ride. she will continue on with the new host, ryan seacrest. >> what an incredible and unforgettable journey we've had. and i've enjoyed every minute of it. >> margaret: new federal rules tonight from the biden administration will require cars to average more miles per gallon, but it isn't as dramatic as the white house previously recommended, especially when it comes to gas guzzlers like suvs and pickups. the push to get more electric vehicles on the road comes as a new aaa survey finds 63% of consumers are unlikely to buy an ev for their next car. cbs's ben tracy shows us that while drivers may be pumping the brakes on electrics, hybrid sales are in the fast lane. >> reporter: at this ford f-150 plant in dearborn, michigan,... >> every 53 seconds, we have a truck come off this assembly line >> reporter: production manager cortni reeves says one out of every seven trucks being made on the day we visited was a hybrid. >> a year ago, it was 1 ou 1 out of 10. >> reporter: 1 out of 10? so 30% increase. >> correct. really demanding this product. >> reporter: hybrids run on both battery power and gasoline. sales surged with a 3% in 2023, to a record high. hybrids now make up 9% of new car sales compared to about 7% for electric vehicles. >> featuring hybrid max power train. >> reporter: they are popular with consumers who want to save on fuel costs but may be reluctant to buy and ev because of price or concerns about charging infrastructure. >> there is really no comp or mice for a hybrid customer. >> reporter: andrew frick is president of ford blue. the company just set a new record for monthly hybrid sales and plans to quadruple production in the next five years. >> we think having a balanced approach of gas, hybrid, electric vehicles is the right way to go. >> reporter: is it fair to say you are basically going to make whatever car people are willing to buy?
