cbs's ed o'keefe is traveling with the president. he joins us now live from paris, and ed, what have we learned? >> reporter: norah, good evening. as you said, the president here now at the start of a five-day visit to france. the secret service says this incident is having no effect on his movements, and the fbi is monitoring the situation. reports say the explosion occurred monday afternoon at a hotel near the charles de gaulle airport outside paris. french prosecutors have opened a case against an unnamed 26-year-old suspect who is originally from the russian-occupied donbas region of ukraine. reports say the suspect is recovering from injuries sustained in monday's blast and is cooperating with police. french media reports guns and false passports were also found. the incident comes ahead of the d-day commemorations ahead of a major military parade for the president's state visit scheduled for saturday and a little more than a month before the summer olympics begin here in paris. norah? >> norah: ed o'keefe with that breaking news, thank you very much. also this news back here at home tonight, president biden's only surviving son sat in a wilmington courtroom all day with the first lady sitting behind him as jurors heard vivid and salacious details about his addiction and alleged behavior during a period where he is facing three criminal charges, and they saw photos of the gun at the center of the case, as prosecutors try to use testimony from at least three women that hunter biden was involved with to establish that he was a chronic drug user when he bought this firearm back in 2018. cbs's scott macfarlane was inside the courtroom for the second day of testimony. >> reporter: first lady jill biden spent a third day at the courthouse, again seated behind hunter biden, as prosecutors tried to prove he illegally purchased this colt .38 handgun while using drugs in late 2018, lying on the application form. they called two women formerly in his life to the stand to help make their case. his ex-wife kathleen buhle testified she found a crack pipe at their washington, d.c., home in 2015, was rejected when she urged him to go to rehab, and would scour his car to ensure their kids didn't find drugs. but under cross-examination, hunter biden's attorney, abbe lowell, got buhle to admit she never actually saw hunter biden do drugs. former justice department official tom dupree. >> the key evidence is going to be provided by people who were intimately close with hunter biden, his ex-wife, ex-girlfriends, and the like. i can only imagine that this is probably excruciatingly painful for hunter biden, among other people, to sit in court and hear this. >> reporter: late today, a former girlfriend, zoe kestan, who dated him for much of 2018, testified hunter biden frequently bought and used crack, at times using a chopstick to clean out his crack pipe. >> i went one time for 13 days without sleeping, and smoking crack and drinking vodka, exclusively. >> reporter: kestan said the president's son was using drugs as late as september 2018, weeks before he bought the gun, and again weeks later in november 2018. prosecutors showed the jury a series of photos of drugs allegedly used by hunter biden and an image from a video of a shirtless biden allegedly with drug paraphernalia. >> it really leaves no doubt that hunter biden was abusing controlled substances. i mean, it doesn't really give much room for the defense to argue that he wasn't, at least at some point in time, addicted. >> reporter: still on the witness list for tomorrow is hallie biden, beau biden's widow, and a woman with whom hunter biden had a romantic relationship when the gun was purchased. jurors saw that gun late today, zip tied in a box, and held up by prosecutors. norah? >> norah: scott macfarlane, very detailed testimony, thank you. well, there is some breaking news in the criminal cases against donald trump in georgia and florida, with indications tonight that the former president will not face trial again before the november election. here's what we know. an appeals court in georgia delayed trump's election interference and racketeering trial indefinitely today while it considers whether fulton county district attorney fani willis should be disqualified from the case over her relationship with the former lead prosecutor. and then there is the case in florida. still no trial date set in trump's classified documents case, and today, u.s. district judge aileen cannon changed the timing for several important pretrial hearings. tonight, dangerous temperatures are scorching much of the western u.s., with more than 31 million americans from california to texas under excessive heat warnings and advisories. so, for how long it will last, let's bring in cbs bay area meteorologist paul heggan. meteorologist paul heggan. good evening, paul. >> norah, good evening. the big story is a phrase that we have used several times already, and that is "heat dome." it's how we refer to a strong area of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere. what that means is there is literally more atmosphere camped out over the southwestern united states, and the weight of this mountain of air exerts higher pressure. it compresses the air at ground level, and that heats up that air, it heats it up significantly, which is why tomorrow is going to be another day of record high temperatures, talking about 112 degrees in phoenix, 111 degrees in las vegas. those are just some of the hottest temperatures, but the 90s and 100s are going to be widespread, which is why tomorrow is another day with widespread excessive heat warnings and heat advisories over the southwestern united states. now, these heat domes tend to be very persistent, lasting for days, or even for weeks, and look at the ten-day temperature outlook for las vegas. the heat subsides just a bit over the weekend, but it is still going to be hot, and then the extreme heat returns again next week, as the heat dome rebuilds. and if it seems early in the season, norah, for this kind of extreme heat, it is. two weeks from tomorrow is the first day of summer. >> norah: wow. paul heggan, thank you. all u.s. embassies in the middle east are on high alert tonight following an attack today outside the u.s. embassy in beirut, lebanon. a suspected isis gunman, who was shot by security forces and arrested. no americans were hurt. this comes as tensions rise along the israel-lebanon border, increasing the threat of a widening war. more now from cbs's imtiaz tyab in israel, where he was roughed up while covering today's news. >> reporter: this cell phone video captured what appears to be the shooter as he exchanged fire with the lebanese army outside the u.s. embassy. the attacker, a syrian national, was shot and has been hospitalized as investigators continue to search for a motive. the incident comes amid heightened tensions between israel and lebanon's powerful iran-backed hezbollah movement, who have been trading cross-border fire since the war in gaza began. tonight, israel's prime minister warned of a very strong action in the north, with fears only growing israel could engage in a wider war with hezbollah. tens of thousands of israelis marched through the old city for jerusalem day, an annual celebration of what israel calls the reunification of east and west jerusalem following the 1967 arab-israeli war. what makes this part of the march so controversial is this is the -- quarter of east jerusalem, and it is seen as a real provocation to march through here like this. as the groups marched, palestinians and journalists were attacked. and as some chanted "death to arabs"... [chanting] they tried to block our cameras from filming. >> let me try to do my job. >> reporter: they kicked and shoved us, as we were forced to leave by police. and tonight, cbs news has learned the white house's top middle east advisor has been sent to egypt and the head of the cia to qatar as part of attempts to push for a breakthrough on the israeli plan, outlined by president biden, to end the war in gaza and see the hostages released. norah. >> norah: imtiaz tyab, thank you. now a look at tonight's other top stories. it's day one of president biden's new immigration policy. the new rule means that thousands of migrants may be quickly deported instead of staying in the u.s. while waiting their asylum. cbs's lilia luciano reports tonight from the border. >> reporter: we just got to the end of the wall here in arizona, of course, mexico is on that side, and as we were arriving, they told us that we just missed the moment that this group of 15 people from bangladesh arrived here to this encampment. what happens is the smugglers take them there, they walk across, and they wait here for border patrol to pick them up. what's going to happen to them now that the policy has changed? that's the big question. gail kocourek volunteers with the tucson samaritans, who deliver humanitarian aid all across the desert. >> i think they are still going to take the chance with border patrol unless the word really gets out and more people get deported and the word starts spreading. then you might see a change. >> norah: now to a historic lift off. two nasa astronauts are, right now, on their way to the international space station, riding in a brand-new spacecraft made by boeing. cbs's mark strassmann explains why today is so significant. >> reporter: here at the kennedy space center, norah, starliner's launch meant the world to boeing, a space shot at redemption. >> and lift off of starliner and atlas 5. >> reporter: picture-perfect. a new generation spacecraft heads to the space station carrying nasa astronauts butch wilmore and suni williams, after years of delays and more than a billion dollars in cost overruns. >> it's a little bit of controlled emotion because there's a lot of phases to this mission, and we just completed the first one. >> reporter: like its test flight to the international space station, starliner's mission has a long way to go. >> norah: and in new york city, a controversial congestion pricing plan won't go into effect at the end of the month as planned. cbs new york's elijah westbrook tells us about the last-minute change in gears. >> reporter: commuters, norah, are breathing a sigh of relief after the governor's stunning reversal in course today. the plan was supposed to go into effect june 30th, but now it's being put on hold indefinitely. the pricing plan was the first of its kind in the ation and up to a $15 toll on drivers entering the busiest parts of manhattan to reduce traffic and emissions while funding the city's struggling mass transit system. but it was never popular among commuters and new yorkers statewide, and faced stiff resistance from the governor of neighboring new jersey. today, governor kathy hochul said the pricing plan would put too much financial stress on the state's middle-class. >> norah: and thanks to our cbs news teams across the country. now to this in france. ceremonies will be held in the coming days marking 80 years since the pivotal d-day invasion of world war ii. cbs's charlie d'agata is in normandy tonight, where he took part in the special parachute jump honoring the heroes of d-day. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: they are on the verge of launching the largest air assault the world has ever seen. more than 13,000 paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st airborne divisions flying straight into a hail of german antiaircraft fire. this week, hundreds of american military veterans are taking that same journey on c-47s, the same aircraft used in the invasion that night. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: like airborne vet frankie scarlata from new orleans. what is this d-day landing like?
