Reporter councilman gallo said his staff received the complaint from the neighbors two weeks ago and immediately flagged the Transportation Department which handles these vehicles, but he says many citycontracted tow yards are full and the department is overwhelmed by the amount of abandoned and stolen cars. Some of the locations where theyre towing vehicles are full and so were trying to identify other properties that we can tow the vehicles to. Reporter the city prioritizes abandoned cars that block driveways and streets. Given the lack of staffing and resources, one city worker tells me these cars may have to wait longer. Oakland Police Report lasts year they recorded almost 15,000 stolen cars. I will there be tomorrow morning and even if i have to get a private company to get it towed, i will get them towed. Neighbors say the cars arent just sitting empty and that people are using them for shelter. Some new details on that breaking story we mentioned earlier about a stolen car with a child inside, we can now tell you this scene in oakland is related to that case, Police Telling us a person has been detained and we just learned this all started in san pablo. The call came in as a kidnapping around 1 30 this afternoon. The vehicle and child were apparently found in richmond 20 minutes later and a short time ago police were investigating the kidnapping coming to this oakland neighborhood. Scot peterson heads back to Court Tomorrow morning as he fights to overturn his conviction for the murders of his pregnant wife Laci Peterson and their unborn son 20 years ago. The los angeles Innocence Project hopes a judge will allow them to bring additional evidence and dna testing that could clear his name. Peterson is serving a life sentence after his death sentence was overturned in 2020. Hes expected to appear remotely in San Mateo County superior court. A Fairfield Police officer is accused of exchanging inappropriate texts and photos with two underage high schoolers. A parent of one of the students at Rodriguez High School notified police who then arrested officer james lewis after an independent investigation by the Solano CountyDistrict Attorneys OfficeMajor Crimes Task force. Lewis is on administrative leave facing charges, including contacting or communicating with a minor with the intent to commit a sex crime. A new proposal in sacramento would require public and Charter Schools to have an armed officer on campus whenever students are present. Current state law allows School Districts that option. The new bill authored by a Southern California republican would make it a mandate. If it becomes law, the state would reimburse School Districts for the cost. Attorney general rob bonta says the state is making progress taking guns away from people who shouldnt have them. He released a new report on the armed and prohibited persons system, apps for short. It shows more than 1,400 firearms were seized in 2023 from people prohibited from owning them. That includes dozens of ghost guns. The goal is simple here. Keep the number of illegally armed individuals as low as possible. So by removing guns from the hands of those who shouldnt have them, we keep that number low. Bonta says agents did compliance checks on more than 25,000 people, the most since the program started. He also says for a second year in a row more people were removed from the list than added. Elsewhere today a federal judge blocked californias law limiting gun purchases to one every 30 days. The law was meant to cut down on socalled straw purchases, when someone buys a gun for someone else who isnt legally allowed to. The judge said the law is unconstitutional based on a 2022 u. S. Pretty much everybody else is in the low 60s, mid60s for redwood city, only upper 50s along the coast for half moon bay, San Francisco right around 60 degrees, 2 degrees below normal. Lets look at the tenday temperature outlook for san jose and the really warm stretch of weather toward the end of the workweek into the weekend and early next week, san jose topping out in the mid to upper 70s, 10 to 15 degrees above average.
