good evening. i'm mark straussman sitting in for adriana on a busy news saturday. as we come on the air dueling in georgia, a key battleground state. but first tonight more issues for united airlines. another midair diversion today, this one in chicago. the problem, an oil warning light. on friday night this united airbus made an emergency landing at lax because of a hydraulics issue. for the airline two disruptive incidents in the last 24 hours and six in the last week. and while no one was hurt, it's part of a pattern of problems taking flight in commercial aviation. cbs' elyse preston has more for us now from los angeles. elise? >> reporter: mark, good evening to you. it's been a tough week for united airlines and its passengers. six different jet liners have had problems, some forced to make emergency landings including one late friday here at lax. the plane was united airbus a320 with 110 people onboard. it was headed from san francisco to hex co city but forced to land we're in the dirt. >> reporter: also a wheel fell off a 777 on takeoff in san francisco thursday. >> the tire is going down the runway. >> reporter: on monday two more incidents including this midair engine fire. in a statement united described these incidents as distinct and unrelated to one another. >> when you're operating as many flights per day as we operate in the united states, somewhere along the line there's going to be some sort of an anomaly. but this does not mean the system is unsafe. >> reporter: united isn't alone with problems. an american airlines jet in miami clipped the tail of a parked frontier jet. today a new development in this near disaster when an alaska airlines boeing 737 max 9 lost its so-called door plug in the air. the justice department now launching a busy spring break travel season with a record number of fliers expected. >> elise preston reporting tonight for us from lax. elise, thanks. off to georgia tonight where president biden and former president trump were kicking off their likely general election battle. and in the peach state tonight it's dueling rallies. mr. biden landed in atlanta today in what's shaping up to be the longest campaign in history. trump's campaigning in north georgia. cbs in atlanta with more. >> reporter: good evening. for the second month in a row joe biden and donald trump are holding competing campaign events in the same state at the same time. this is an unofficial shift from the primary to the general election that both candidates are still just over 100 delegates shy of securing the nominations. it's deja vu in georgia. >> thank you, thank you, thank you. i'm here tonight because you really want to do it again. because you are going to win this primary for us on tuesday and because we're going to win in november. >> reporter: the peach state the backdrop for dueling campaign rallies saturday setting up an all but certain joe biden-donald trump rematch in november. >> i don't like the fact we're doing this again. >> reporter: it's trump's first rally since his last primary rival nikki haley dropped out after super tuesday. >> they call it super tuesday for a reason. we won big. and now we're just days away from officially clenching the republican nomination for president of the united states of america. >> reporter: georgia is the second stop on biden's new battleground push that started in pennsylvania friday, and he plans to chris cross new hampshire, wisconsin, and michigan by next thursday while vice president harris stumps in nevada and arizona. >> hello, nevada. >> look, i'm not a young guy. >> reporter: team biden is also dropping $30 million on a six-week ad buy to air across those swing states, marking the start of one of the longest general elections in campaign history. president biden won georgia by fewer than 12,000 votes in 2020, one of a handful of battleground states he just narrowly won that helped him secure the white ho house. >> now to the middle east. you're watching video of a british ship shooting down houthi droeps. in all they downed at least 28 of those drones in a four-hour span. for months the iranian backed houthis have posed a famine. aid has been slow to arrive with aid groups trucking up north where it's badly needed. as an emergency alternative the u.s. and several other countries are airdropping food and supplies. but it's not only extremely limited and costly, it's dangerous. the hamas-run health ministry says at least eight people have been killed by falling cargo after parachutes malfunctioned. the hazards of airdrops are one reason president biden announced in his "state of the union" address that the u.s. military will establish a temporary pier off the coast of gaza so aid can be delivered by sea. he emphasized there will be no u.s. boots on the grounds, but he didn't explain how long it would take. cbs news has learned the pier similar to this one must be shipped from virginia crossing the atlantic and mediterranean meaning delivering that lifesaving food, water, and shelter is weeks away. all this just ahead of ramadan, the holy month a time of prayer but violence between israelis and palestinians. that's one reason cia director bill burns was in the region pushing for a pause in fighting. mark, but with time running out and as president biden himself said, that's looking tough. >> chris livesay in tel aviv, thank you. two national guard soldiers i a border patrol agent are dead after the helicopter they were flying in crashed in texas. it happened friday near rio grande city. a fourth person onboard the chopper remains in critical condition. the cause of the crash remains under investigation. president biden issued a statement expressing condolences and adding their sacrifices will never be forgotten. in western wisconsin nine people were killed and one injured when a tanker truck crashed into a passenger van. only one person survived the crash, the passenger in the van. that person is now hospitalized. the names of the dead were not made public pending notification of family members. it's the second deadliest crash in state history. and now to severe storms today some areas could see a half foot of rain. the storm system is also spawning tornados. this damage from a twister that ripped through dale county, alabama, on friday. several homes were hit but working, but it's still early. throughout the month of march miami beach is cracking down on spring break. years of chaos including last year's deadly shootings led officials to say enough is enough. the city's entire police force has hit the streets along with some 18 other local state and federal agencies. >> what we don't welcome is criminal activity. what we don't welcome is mayhem. >> reporter: to even get to the beach you've got to go through a dui checkpoint. all lanes of traffic are down to just one. bag checks once you're on the ground, and access to the beach and a part of south beach stops at 6:00 p.m. >> if you are in our city, we expect you to abide by the law. we expect you to respect the quality of life of our residents. >> reporter: parking prices have been raised
