And you can think of the rain that you are going to see in the bay as a much lighter version of what the friends in tahoe will be getting. Lets look live in the sierra and the expect that storm will blanket that area with record amounts of snow. Unsafe and fast and the warnings are already out. Caltrans says stay off the roads to you this morning and more cars means more danger for their workers out there trying to keep the roads clear. Listen. Its pretty much their job to keep the roads open. At all times. And i mean, they definitely have safety protocols in place. You know . And most of the time, you know, these guys, you know, theyre in vehicles so at least theyre in an enclosed environment and snow plows and blowers and things like that. So theyre theyre not exactly outside, you know. Necessarily. All the time. So bringing jessica in now. We also know, jess a popular Music Festival planned in the sierra was canceled because of the storm. Yes. You are i think this was big news. Originally it seemed like they wanted to keep it around for just a little bit longer right . They did and they tried so hard but we understand you have been working with a lot of other meteorologists in our region to tell what is to expect because were worried about the risk of avalanche too. Especially with the wind gusts, an easy trigger for an avalanche to occur in a region like that where heavy snow is falling heading into this weekends forecast. Starting today under blizzard warnings and were going to get to that in just a minute. But lets start back here in the bay here because if you were thinking about going to the sierraattahoe region this weekend, this is time to rethink and turn around. Were waking up to 40s and low 50s throughout the bay area and a cool and cloudy start throughout most of the bay and within the next couple of hours the showers roll back in from offshore, this is the end of the die break we had for the past couple of days. Yesterday was stunning day with sunshine widespread throughout the bay area. Doppler was dry. No activity with showers building in just yet. But thats going to look a lot different within the next couple of hours. Right now were waking up to some light Little Pockets of showers kind of just sweeping in from offshore along our coast but for the rest of us its dry as we wake up and head out the door. This is our weather headlines as we head into weekend. For the most part, the light rain starts to roll in and the next three, four hours. Well start to see that up in the north bay and down into the santa clara valley. Its going to be a well weekend for us ahead as we head into our friday and saturday forecast. The showers really ramp up and the blizzard conditions in the sierra become very big concern for us and our friends up there as we gear up for the weekend. Dealing with snow anywhere up to around 10 feet at peak elevations. For now g over to you. All right jessica. You know i had a few rain drops coming in as well but watch the roadways closely because of the weather were expecting. So definitely keep that in mind as you head out the door this morning. Right now, overview here, all of the busy spots that area you head to the bay bridge, the 880 to 92 commute. That south bay commute. That north bay commute. Everything is Holding Steady with some pretty nice conditions. With the exception of the Altamont Pass. Now thats where were seeing speeds down to about 9 Miles Per Hour reports of a stalled vehicle slowing things down through there. And again, its just an area where we typically see some brake lights in the Early Morning hours. So 44 minutes now, 205 over to 680. Nicole . Well, and for people already in the sierra, we hope you have stocked up with supplies. We sent our kelsi thorud to truckee ahead of the storm where just about everyone was out and about to prepare themselves while they still could. Reporter People Living in the higher l evacuations of the sierra are making sure they have everything they need to safely ride it out. Well, were chopping firewood. Making sure we have shovels. Making sure we have all the food we need. Were all set. What they said is this the biggest three day dump since 2020 and we were here for that weekend. It was march 13th weekend. And i remember it was just as soon as i shoveled the deck, i go back inside and i look outside and it was another foot. Two feet. Just accumulated so fast. So. Its well see. Reporter local Hardware Stores saw a steady stream of customers coming in, grabbing lastminute essentials. We will stay open as long as the town of truckee or chp doesnt come and ask us to close. Reporter employees say they dont expect to have to close during this coming storm but are cautioning people to prepare for the worst. We dont know what the weather is going what the power is going to be like. Whether were going to run out of power. So definitely having that extra storage of storage or canned goods that dont go bad as well as having a way to keep the items cold in the fridge. So that if you do have a power outage you are not losing your food. Reporter and most people are taking this storm seriously. Preparing for anything while also getting excited for the sight of fresh snow. Its going to be a good one. You can you can tell. Hopefully everyone is safe and just stays inside and has power. A live look behind me over lake tahoe as they wake up and gear up for some blizzard conditions as we head into the next couple of days. Now to define a blizzard, it takes a couple of ingredients. Of course strong wind speeds anywhere above 35 Miles Per Hour whether thats sustained or wind gusts. To add to that visibility needs to be reduced due to the blowing snow throughout the local community in the regions and that needs to be longer than three hours. If the conditions last, thats the reason why they issued a blizzard warning. Not only for areas like South Lake Tahoe but widespread throughout the sierra with snowfall levels expected to hit around 5 to 10 feet and wind gusts could see especially at the ridges anywhere up to around 80 to 100 Miles Per Hour. Now its also worth mentioning as we take a look at the models heading into the next couple ofdays they are expecting to see the high conditions from the storm thats moving in if the north and they could see that snowfall really add up fast. Certain resorts and we are keeping a close eye on them as we head into this next couple of days. The storm systems also bringing us plenty of rain as we head into the afternoon hours today. Tomorrow. Lasting into our weekend forecast. It looks like now its going to linger into our sunday models too so ill show you that in just a second but lets start off on futurecast and showing this morning. Light rain in the forecast for us through the next couple of hours as it sweeps in from offshore with relatively light winds. The wind kick up more in the afternoon hours today. Thats when the frontal band really moves in closer to around 4 00 thats when it hits the south bay. At this point a quarter inch of rain in areas like bodega bay and San Francisco and we continue to watch the rainfall really add up into the overnight hours tonight. Early Morning Hours tomorrow. Its going to stay active on our doppler in the next couple of days at times we can see isolated heavier pockets of rain like we saw all the way into tomorrow afternoon. Down down into the south bay and that will continue to be the trendinto the saturday forecast as well. Keep a close eye on the rainfall totals and update with you any new developments. The earthquakes hit yesterday. The daytime highs today, were talking about seize in the forecast for us widespread throughout the bay area. More on this coming up in just a bit. And of course you can grab the travel times on your app once you hop in the car but for the most part. 880. South bay, all of that is looking good. Just right here westbound 580 coming out of tracy getting into the Altamont Pass where you are going to see some brake lights. So lets get back to the forecast. Jess . All right. Well, we are tracking this storm thats staying over california for the next full days and rain here means snow in the sierra and right now a blizzard warning is in effect there. Hopefully everyone there is prepped and ready to hunker down for the storm. And rachel windchill with our sister station at kovr is doing the hard work out in the palisades right now with more on the conditions. Good morning, rachel. Reporter good morning, were actually at echo summit. Palisades way high up. But were feeling the effects of this change in the weather right now. And i just want to say this is a caltrans station so theyve got salt, theyve got a scraper and theyve got sand. And they are getting ready and it is really starting to drop in temperature. And also the wind is starting to pick up. We did see a plow alongside the road but the roads are all clear at this point in time. This is like we said the calm before the storm. But that is not stopping folks from getting ready. Theres lots of people who are prepping and theres people who are prepping to come up here. A lot of caltrans people and locals saying are you telling people to not come up here . In fact, in the twin bridges area, were forecasting 8 to 12 feet of snow right where im standing. Now some were making lastminute purchases to stock up son supplies in case the power goes out. Have the batteries ready and warning folks to be prepared for all possibilities. Gas up. Be ready. Have your generators on standby. And just stay off the roads. Bring supplies with you. Bring flashlights and make sure the cell phone is charged and make sure you have blankets and all it takes is either one or two spinouts or if you know, we get the whiteout conditions, we have to hold traffic and shut the road down. Reporter many sending a message toe skiers that the snow is going to be there. And theres no harm in waiting until next week. Of course if you are a diehard snowboarder, you want to get that fresh powder. But 8 to 12 feet of snow . [ laughter ] highway 50 . I mean, 80 maybe. But theres theyre likely going to shut down 50 when you have that much snow up here. You just got to get it off the road. And you have to have enough people to do it. Absolutely.
