Of course, this is a problem we have seen across the bay area. And now, Alameda Countys embattled d. A. Just announced a new plan to tackle organized retail theft. Pamela price says she has heard the cries of the community , and businesses frustrated, that her office has not done enough to address rapid burglary in oakland and across Alameda County. So the d. A. Office was recently awarded 2 million from the state to fight retail crime. Price plans to match that for a total of 4 million. The investment will fund two dedicated retail theft prosecutors and also two inspectors , and in keeping with a major part of price s platform, the money will also support a nonprofit Restorative Justice program to help get at the root of the cause. So that we are having the opportunity to interrupt thefts at the lower level, while at the same time focusing our efforts on how to stop it through organized retail, and how we can essentially choke off the demand that is driving a lot of what we see happening in our communities. As we reported, oakland missed out on state grant money to fight retail theft because it missed a deadline. Price sidestepped questions about the recall she is facing, but people who want her out of office say their campaign is right on track. They are about to begin Gathering Signatures right now. We want Alameda County to be safe for everybody. The Current Administration is not focused on that. When there are no consequences for people committing crimes, it is actually almost encouraging people to continue. They must admit 73,000 signatures by march to get there recall measure on the ballot. Lets go to the teachers strike in san francisco. San Francisco Unified School District took another step toward hitting the picket line after 97 of their members voted to give leadership the authority to call a strike. Parents and teachers are calling on leadership to meet their demands for higher pay and also a more manageable workload. So many schools are performing staffing gymnastics , putting teachers in positions that are not their expertise, asking them to wear multiple hats. This is not fair, and it is not sustainable. It is very clear that the overwhelming number of our members are making their voice heard that the current offer on the table is not something we can settle for. Before teachers actually walk off the job, Union Members must hold another vote for final approval. Meanwhile, the district and union had their next negotiation session scheduled for monday. The district is saying they are working diligently and in good faith to reach an agreement with the union, and that they want to come to an agreement that honors their employees contributions and ensures they are responsibly stewarding public funds. We have a lot lately about Companies Joining the union some movement to union as per the latest push may seem unexpected. Workers are one of the largest food banks in the bay area are looking to unionize. So kenny choi spoke to workers in Alameda County who say some of their staff how to tap into their own pantry just to get by. Reporter workers a unionizing will help ensure higher wages, keeping up with rising costs. One step closer, despite a minor setback. Say good morning to eddie. Reporter it is in this massive warehouse in oakland where the work begins. This is what we do every day. Reporter blair curiel leads volunteers to stuff countless bags of food for distribution. They are helping Community Members facing food insecurity, which is also part of a wave of nonprofit seeking to unionize. We are very excited. Morale is very high right now. Reporter is immobilizing efforts including workers at starbucks and even nonprofit employees at their counterpart as at lauren food bank unionizing in 2019 have inspired them. Some of the lowest paid here include warehouse workers. They make the work really happen at the food bank, they make sure we can get food out into the community. Reporter Fiona Hannigan and katie peoples work in marketing and fundraising, a two thirds of the eligible fulltime and parttime workers have signed the authorization to form a union. They say many other coworkers are in need. We have staff who are accessing food bank resources. We are concerned about a living wage and benefits. Right now, our Warehouse Team does not have much voice. Reporter has been said wednesday it will not voluntarily recognize the union, choosing to stay neutral. The food bank fully respect the right of our staff to seek a union and equally supports our staffs right to self determine their representation. I really welcome their decision to remain neutral. Reporter employees say they will clear a final hurdle by petitioning the National LaborRelations Board for an official vote. I am excited for this opportunity, because it will be good for us, and good for the organization, and good for Alameda County. Reporter employees like blair know they are close. Again, the next step will be the unionization vote. If it passes, they would become the Second Food Bank in the bay area to form a union. Still ahead, it is a ring of fire in the sky, they area astronomers getting ready to catch a solo spectacle this weekend. What to look for if you want to see the eclipse. Is like the moon partially photobombing the sun. The golden state has a golden ticket, what we know about the 1. 7 billion winning powerball ticket. Just a question, do you still have your eclipse glasses hanging around . A solo spectacle is happening this weekend. Brian hackney fills us in on the ring of fire eclipse and why the bay area might not get the full view, but it is still worth looking to the sky. Reporter professor Jeff Matthews is climbing into this. The observatory housing a 16 inch computercontrolled telescope at foothill college. Just got this fantastic photo of the sun. He does light up about anything solar. I dont think ive ever taken a picture of my dessert, but the sun . Many times. Reporter but he had never seen this, an annular eclipse. People describe it as a golden ring in the sky. They sound amazingly beautiful. That was amazing, absolutely gorgeous. I am at a loss for words. Reporter it happened when the moon is a bit too far away to state a total solar eclipse, so the moon does not block the sun completely. Instead, it leaves a ring of fire, or annular eclipse for a few precious minutes. It is happening saturday morning. But you can only see that golden ring in a path 125 miles wide, crossing the western u. S. Before moving through central and south america. From the bay area, it will only be seen as a partial solar eclipse. To see what it will look like here, hello, im richard, do, i would like to welcome you to planetarium , where all our astronomy classes on campus are taught, here in this room, using our star projector in the center of the room. What we set up on the planetarium dome is the view you would get as seen from the point on earth of greatest eclipse. Reporter again, we wont see this in the bay area. Instead, we are starting at 8 00 in the morning, this is the view we get, a little bite sticking out, a little more, a little more. What we will end up seeing at the time of greatest eclipse, this is of the sun will look like, a crescent of son still visible. So what it will end up appearing like is kind of like the moon partially photobombing the sun. Reporter the most important thing about the saturday morning eclipse, never looked directly at it. If you are ever able to see the service of the sun directly, you need solar filters like these to let you safely observe the sun directly. Reporter and indirectly, you could just use your nearest tree. A Family Member send me a great picture from 2017, where they were viewing the eclipse from underneath a tree. Every one of those gaps through the leaves ended up forming a little image of the eclipse on the ground. Reporter had taken a picture like that of the 2017 eclipse. It was just fantastic. Reporter it will be impressive as a partial eclipse in the bay area, but it is at least a seven hour drive to see the annular eclipse. A seven hour drive for a onceinalifetime event . Sure. I would say go for it. Plus, there are all kinds of fun things to do along the way. Next stop, total eclipse. Next up total eclipse, in six months. Reporter thats right, a total eclipse in the u. S. Next april. This weekend, just a preview but well worth watching. Just not directly. Clouds may obscure your viewing of the eclipse, i will talk about which parts of the bay area hi, im todd. Im a veteran of 23 years. I served three overseas tours. I love to give back to the community. I offer what i can when i can. I started noticing my memory was slipping. I saw a prevagen commercial and i did some research on it. I started taking prevagen about three years ago. I feel clearer in my thoughts, my memory has improved and generally just more on point. Prevagen. At stores everywhere without a prescription. The doctor will see you now. And generally just more on point. But do they really . Do they see that crick in your neck . That ache in your heart . Will they see that funny little thing that wasnt there last year . A new bounce in your step . The way your retinal scan connects to your blood sugar . At Kaiser Permanente all of us Work Together to care for all that is you. We have a solar to try to see, maybe a little rain in the forecast, we need to check with paul heggen for the exact calculation. We have some changes in store as we get closer to the end of the workweek and into the weekend. Beginning with more cloud cover building toward us. You can see bands of clouds offshore, one of which flowing to the bay area already tonight, then the clouds they can again tomorrow afternoon and into tomorrow evening. Of course, that does mean your view of the partial eclipse over the bay area might be obscured. Supposedly, if we get a clear enough view, we can see over 80 of the sun is blocked, but the peak of the class occurs at 9 19 on saturday morning. You will eclipse glasses to view it safely to the best places the view around the bay area will be where you have the best chance of finding holes in the cloud cover, in land in the east bay, the trivalley, and of the delta, and also the santa clara valley. Even there, though, i would be prepared for the possibility that you will not be able to see the eclipse around its peak at 9 19 saturday morning. The odds of squeezing any moisture out of those clouds will be fairly low. Could see some patching mist and drizzle tomorrow night into early saturday, then by monday night as well. The best chance with both systems will be along the coast , north of the golden gate, and maybe around the bay. But that part of the forecast could still go either way. The clouds will definitely knock temperatures down a peg. Lets look at tomorrows forecast highs, a few degrees below average after we were close to or slightly above average today, back down to the mid and upper 70s and santa clara valley, around 80 in morgan hill. Temperatures start in the low to mid 50s,
