repel an invasion of its territory after palestinian militants launched highly coordinated attacks from gaza. thousands of rockets were fired into israel as gunmen infiltrated several border towns and bases, kidnapping civilians and soldiers. israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu declared the country was, quote, at war. he said the enemy would pay an unprecedented price. among the targets hit, this high rise, which was reduced to rubble. hundreds have been killed on both sides, and it is a sharp escalation of violence for a region that bears the scars of centuries of conflict. cbs in tel-aviv leads us off. >> reporter: tonight a fresh wave of rockets has hit tel-aviv with the israeli military say it's fighting in 22 locations after the government confirms over 250 israelis are now dead, over 600 injured and unknown number remain in captivity. how? how was hamas able to carry out such a massive attack? remember, israel ashbly has the best intelligence agencies in the middle east. it spends millions to prevent something like this from happening. and, yet, hamas fighters were able to carry out such a catastrophic attack. what it's calling operation imtiaz tyab will see a spiral as israel continues to retaliate. over 1,600 wounded in a series of strikes as armed palestinian group have vowed tonight to join hamas in its ongoing assault. an unprecedented price on hamas, this is uncharted territory for israel, which now finds itself in a full scale war. >> imtiaz tyab in tel-aviv, thank you. exploded on a major jewish holiday catching the israeli military off guard. >> reporter: gaza militants started their surprise attack this morning, launching thousands of rockets into israel. following it up with an invasion by land, sea and even air. social media showed them quickly sweeping into israeli military bases and communities, killing hundreds and injuring hundreds more. this israeli woman says she was able to escape an outdoor party attacked by gunmen. palestinian militants attacked on multiple fronts. videos of the aftermath show bodies of israeli civilians scattered across the streets. during the assault, hamas used drones to target machine guns, soldiers and to even hit a tank. while captured israeli equipment was paraded through the streets of gaza. videos and photos show gaza militants abducted an unknown number of israelis, including children and the elderly and taking them back into gaza. with the country in shock, the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu declared war. he told his security cabinet the first objective is to clear out enemy forces and restore security. the second is to exact an immense price from the enemy. and the third is to reinforce other fronts so nobody mistakenly joins this war. already israeli has responded with air strikes, targeting what they say are hamas targets. palestinian officials in gaza say hundreds of people have been killed. a hamas commander called on palestinians everywhere to rise up against israel. israeli soldiers are fighting to re-take captured ground while tens of thousands of soldiers are being called up for duty. tensions have been building for months between palestinians and israelis in the west bank and jerusalem. many in the international community have been quick to condemn today's attack. but the scale, sophistication and complexity of the attack have left many stunned, comparing it to the surprise attack by egyptians during the i don't mean kip por war 50 years ago. tonight many are wondering how israeli intelligence could fail to detect such a vicious attack. i have been on both sides of the border. it is heavily monitored and fortified. but getting to the bottom of those questions might have to wait as the country prepares for what is shaping up to be a long and bloody war. >> today president biden condemned the attacks against israel, reaffirming the united states' commitment to the jewish state security. christina riffini is at the white house. >> reporter: senior staff worked through the night. the white house is also pushing back against republican claims that this attack has anything to do with assets that were unfrozen during the recent release of detained americans from tyron. >> the united states stands with israel in the face of these assaults. israel has the right to defend itself and its people. >> reporter: speaking to benjamin netanyahu, president biden says america's commitment is unwavering. >> this is not a moment for any party hostile to israel to exploit these attacks to seek advantage. the world is watching. >> reporter: but domestic political divisions could complicate that commitment. >> there is nothing the house can do until they elect a speaker. >> reporter: members of the congress, including kevin mccarthy are warning the lack of a house speaker will hinder americans responsibility to respond. >> we have to come together to deliver emergency aid to israel. we don't even have a speaker in place to do that right now. >> reporter: it is even complicating national security briefings for congress. >> reporter: on the campaign trail, a prisoner exchange the white house negotiated in september, which unfroze $6 billion in iranian assets. >> i would not be at all surprised if part of that tremendous wealth went into all of a sudden watching this level of aggression. >> reporter: but the white house pushed back hard saying not a penny of the money has been spent and these funds have absolutely nothing to do with the horrific attacks today, and this is not a time to spread disinformation. a senior white house official says it is still too soon to say if iran was directly involved in this hamas assault, but tyron has funded the group in the past. >> thank you. today striking health care workers in five states and the district of columbia returned to work after a three-day walk out. cbs is in los angeles tonight as economic forces push unions to the picket lines. >> reporter: adriana, more than 450,000 people have walked off their jobs this year. many who were still striking say they will keep fighting for higher wages. 75,000 kaiser permanente workers are back at work today after a three-day strike failed to reach a day. >> we are not done. we are yready to go next week. >> reporter: auto workers rallied today after a concession from general motors decided not to expand its walkouts, while ford announced more strike-related layoffs, now totaling 1,800 employees. the workers are among the millions of americans feeling the sting of inflation. the surpriingly strong u.s. jobs report with 336,000 added to payrolls could leave the federal reserve to raise interest rates again next month. >> higher interest rates are designed to reduce demand in the economy so that inflation comes down and we can get prices back under control. >> reporter: borrowing money is more expensive, with mortgage rates nearing 8% and interest for credit cards soaring to 22%, a number not seen in 30 years. also straining household budgets, the price of gas and groceries. >> even though household costs aren't going up as much as they have been, they're still a lot higher than they were two or three years ago and the income hasn't kept up. >> reporter: the economy is proving strong, despite some challenges. expert advise now is a good time to pay down credit card debt and ramp up your emergency savings. adriana? >> good advice. thank you. today new york city mayor eric adams ended a four-day trip to latin america, urging countries in the region to find decided not to expand its walkouts, while ford announced more strike-related layoffs, now totaling 1,800 employees. the workers are among the millions of americans feeling the sting of inflation. the surpriingly strong u.s. jobs report with 336,000 added to payrolls could leave the federal reserve to raise interest rates again next month. >> higher interest rates are designed to reduce demand in the economy so that inflation comes down and we can get prices back under control. >> reporter: borrowing money is more expensive, with mortgage rates nearing 8% and interest for credit cards soaring to 22%, a number not seen in 30 years. also straining household budgets, the price of gas and groceries. >> even though household costs aren't going up as much as they have been, they're still a lot higher than they were two or three years ago and the income hasn't kept up. >> reporter: the economy is proving strong, despite some challenges. expert advise now is a good time to pay down credit card debt and ramp up your emergency savings. adriana? >> good advice. thank you. today new york city mayor eric adams ended a four-day trip to latin america, urging countries in the region to find solutions to the migrant crisis being felt across the americas. cbs' michael george is in new york with the latest. michael? >> reporter: adriana, good evening. we're outside the roosevelt hotel. it is a temporary home for many asylum seekers. discourage migrants from coming to the city. new york city mayor eric adams is wrapping up a tour of mexico, ecuador and columbia, key points on the
