Dianne feinstein. We look back at her career here in the bay area and on the national stage, plus how she changed american society. And paving the path of women, feinsteins role as a trailblazer. The legacy shea leaves behind is one that will be unmatched for certainly my lifetime. Recalling good morning, thanks for starting your day with us. Today is september 30th. Im max darrow. All across california and the nation, americans are remembering Dianne Feinstein, the longtime senator, former San Francisco mayor and supervisor died thursday night at the age of 90. Now everyone from politicians to journalists to her constituents are telling their stories about how she affected their lives. Im very sad, and it really makes me very grateful to have been able to cover her back to when she was mayor. I mean, she was an amazing person. She defied being put in any kind of a political box. I learned from her that you take your job seriously, you better be prepared, and you hold yourself with some dignity. Our Juliette Goodrich is on capitol hill where theres been an outpouring of emotion from those who worked alongsideher. Reporter here we are inside the nations capitol, and i can tell you today there were so many conversations about the late senator Dianne Feinstein as they all learned the news. Her career lasted a life span. And lets take a look back at what she did, starting in San Francisco. Well, i dont think the board has really done their homework when it comes to taxation. Reporter Dianne Feinsteins storied political career began in San Francisco in 1969 when she was elected to the citys board of supervisors. Feinstein would ultimately become the first woman to serve as the boards president. Hi, tom. Im dianne. Nice to know you. Reporter it would be one of many firsts for feinstein. In 1992 she made history, becoming the first woman to represent california in the u. S. Senate. In that same year, she would help Barbara Boxer win the states other senate seat in what became known as the year of the woman, setting up this iconic moment. I will never forget the night we made history. We were at the fairmont hotel, waiting to see what would happen. And dianne was a shooin, and i was certainly absolutely the underdog. Reporter retired senator Barbara Boxer would serve with feinstein until the end of boxers term in 2017. When the two of us made it, two women from the bay area, two jewish women from the bay area, it was such history. Reporter boxer says they knew because of their gender, they had to fight even harder. These guys thought women couldnt understand, you know, the gun issues, couldnt understand missile issues, couldnt understand defense issues. Reporter while feinsteins time in the senate has more recently defined her epic career what are your thoughts on what it means for our country to have women serve in meaningful numbers on the federal bench . Reporter it was before her time in washington that she was tested by violence and tragedy. In 1978 as a San Francisco supervisor, she was there when the citys mayor and a trailblazing city supervisor were murdered by another supervisor. Both mayor moscone and supervisor harvey milk have been shot and killed. Reporter a steely feinstein would guide and calm a shattered city. I became mayor as a product of assassination of the mayor being killed and the first openly gay public official being killed by a friend and colleague of mine. Shes iconic for that moment, for showing that women could lead. Shes been that way the whole time, i think just very, very calm and very measured. Reporter feinstein would take over as San Franciscos mayor, the first woman to hold the post. She would then win the job twice in two elections. While she was mayor, she earmarked more money for aids research in San Francisco than president reagan did for the entire country. Feinstein would make an unsuccessful run for governor in 1990, but even in defeat, she was resilient and went on to become californias first female u. S. Senator in 1992. Electing women senators was a big deal. And in 1992, we elected two women senators at the same time, and thats also going to be a very important part of her legacy. Reporter in her last election in 2018, she went up against then state Senate President kevin de leone. Californias Democratic Party threw their support behind him who was the more progressive candidate. Democrats made feinsteins age an issue. Progressives were dissatisfied with her practical orientation. Dianne feinstein always made a point of working with republicans to get things done. They were unhappy about that. Reporter in march of 2022, Dianne Feinstein would lose her husband, 86yearold richard blum, a crushing loss. I called her, and we talked. And she said to me, barbara, i didnt know how much my life would change and my world would change, how much i depended on him and cared about him, and she was really suffering from that loss. Reporter the loss of her husband coupled with talk of recent cognitive issues, at 89, feinstein announced her retirement in february 2023. My husband has died, and that affected the decision. Reporter senator boxer said feinstein never viewed her post in the senate as a job, she viewed it as a mission. Throughout the day and into the evening, many people bringing flowers, leaving them outside of her office. Here in washington d. C. , a memorial will be in the works. They have not announced when or where, but a lot of people plan to attend. And so many people are sharing their comments about her being a trailblazer and breaking glass ceilings, but more importantly, theyre saying that she was a friend. Thats the latest here. Im Juliette Goodrich, back to you. Thanks. Jules. Even when Dianne Feinstein was in washington, she never stopped caring about San Francisco. Mayor london breed said the senator would still contact her about issues like the upcoming apex comments and the condition of the tenderloin and says she was a huge help when covid hit. Ill always remember that during the most difficult times when things were challenging, i never had to pick up the phone and call her. She always immediately picked up the phone, she always had San Francisco top of mind. Breed is only the second woman to serve as San Francisco mayor after feinstein. Our kelsi thorud has more on how the late senator paved the way for countless other women. Reporter well, tricks continue to pour in honoring the late senator Dianne Feinstein. One word keeps being repeated, and that is trailblazer. The senators career spanned over 50 years, and during that time, she was often the first woman elected to her position. Over the decades, she has broken countless glass ceilings and inspired many of the women who are in office today. From her early days in Government Back in the 1970s, Dianne Feinstein was not shy about sharing her opinion that Women Deserve a seat in government. Women are going to play an enormous role in the destiny of the world, in the quest for peace, in the solutions to poverty and government. Reporter throughout her career, feinstein was often one of only a few women, if any, in the room but quickly became the first to rise to a position of power. In 1978, she was elected the first woman president of San Franciscos board of supervisors, and after the assassination of harvey milk and george moscone, she became the citys first woman mayor. In 1984 while still in her position as mayor, feinsteins name was floated as potentially becoming the Vice President ial candidate on walter mondales ticket. Heres a clip from an interview she did with kpix at the time where the reporter asked her if she was surprised her name was in the conversation for vp. I think if i were a man, it would be there, very much so. Ive been a good mayor, and ive done the right things for the city, and i intend to continue to do the right things for the city. Reporter feinstein was not ultimately picked as mondales running mate, but that didnt slow her down. In 1992, she was elected californias first female senator in what would become known as the year of the woman. She stayed in that position as senator for over three decades until her death, makingng heher the longestserv female senator in u. S. History. Kathleen brown, the former treasurer of california who worked with feinstein for years had this to say about her colleague and friend. Shes a legend. And her legacy is profound for the state of california. But i think greater than just the state, for women around the country and around the world. Reporter former congresswoman Jackie Speier was also a longtime friend and colleague of senator feinsteins. She simply had this to say about the senators legacy. The legacy she leaves behind is one that will be unmatched for certainly my lifetime. Reporter now, leaders across the country as well as here locally have been sharing their stories about the late senator all day. We heard from mayor breed here earlier at city hall. She shared a story where she said she actually thinks of senator feinstein still as the mayor of San Francisco, and thats because she would often call her office and give advice. Kelsi thorud reporting ahead in our next half hour, Governor Newsom pays tribute to Dianne Feinstein, but now the clock is ticking for him to appoint someone to fill the late senators seat. Well have more on that at 7 30. Switching gear, lets get a check of the weather with meteorologist paul heggan. For this last day of september, were tracking an unsettled weather pattern. Off and on showers are out there right now. Theyre going to be with us throughout the day. But this is a oneday rain chance. Storm system causing it is going to move far off to the east, warm up on sunday. Well track the showers hour by hour momentarily. The temperatures the other side of todays stories. Highs way below average, especially inland, only reaching up to the mid to upper 60s and low 70s across the entire bay area. 7 11 on this saturday morning. Still ahead on kpix and streaming on cbs news bay area, its not considered a common form of cancer, but more than 100,000 women across the United States are expected to be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer. Contact your volvo retailer to learn more. Welcome back. It is 7 14 on this saturday morning. September is gynecologic Cancer Awareness month. And while these cancers arent thought of as common, 106,000 women in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with one this year. We are joined this morning with a gynecologist. Lets get to the Advisory Council. Im on the Advisory Council of alliance for Womens Health and prevention. And this is a group thats really focused on getting women and girls the preventative tests they need and also does so in an equitable fashion. Okay. So lets get into gynecologic cancer. There are five different kinds. What are they . So were talking cervical, uterine, ovarian and vaginal cancers. So these are five cancers that people here in the bay area, im sure they come into your office with. Do you see patients on a routine basis who come in with these cancers . Yes. They are rarer than some other cancers that people face. But, yes, i actually had a 70yearold patient come in just last year with some itching on her vulva. Shes, like, i cant see down there, take a look. Sure enough, it was a small cancer that was biopsied, picked up. She got treat and is doing great. Im glad to hear shes doing great and you detected it early. As far as risk factor, first and foremost, who is at risk for these kinds of cancers . You know, really all women are at risk because we have these body parts. But there are some other things that put women at increased risk. So certainly women who are hispanic background, black women are slightly at increased risk as well, and then those with a family history. So i always tell women, its really important to know that family history. So this is obviously an incredibly important Womens Health issue that were talking about here this morning. We know that some of these cancers are at least somewhat preventible, correct . Yes. And Cervical Cancer is one of those. Cervical cancer can be screened. We have a great Screening Test for that which is the pap test. We do that along with hpv which is the human papilloma virus that causes Cervical Cancer. And women and young girls should be getting this Screening Test. We start at 21, actually. And its done every three years okay. I know we just put on this right here on our screen, some of just the tips in full screen here to reduce the risk. But if theres something you want people to take away, whether its young women, whether its people who are a little bit older, does that really matter . Yeah, it actually doesnt. One of the most Common Misconceptions is, oh, if im older, i dont need to see a gynecologist, and nothing could be far from the truth. We all know that our risk of cancer increases with age. So my recommendation to all women is make sure youre seeing a gynecologist every year and know that family history. So this is kind of a yearly appointment youre suggesting. Yes. Just kind of your regular preventative care. Yes, absolutely. A yearly exam for a very thorough pelvic exam and breast exam is crucial. Now, in terms of personal stories, i know we dont have more than about a minute left, but you mentioned something right before the break when we were chatting about somebody who came by when you were giving a talk about this. Talk to me about that. Yeah. So hi a booth at a festival recently, and women were walking by. I said, hi, are you interested in seeing a gynecologist. And a lot of them said, oh, that ship has sailed, or, im too old for that. Or, oh, i actually had my uterus removed, so i dont actually need to see a gynecologist. So there are a lot of women out there thinking that they dont need to see a gynecologist after a certain age, and i really urge everyone to make sure they have this appointment yearly because we can pick up things that perhaps you didnt notice. So prevention is key. And time i take it is of the essence as well . Absolutely. We can catch these cancers, cure them and patients do better. Doctor, thank you so much for joining us this morning with some really important tips and things to be on the lookout for. Thank you. Thank you so much for having me. Weve reached the end of september, and we have an unusually unsettled weather pattern in store to finish off the month. Off and on showers as we head throughout the day. Its not going to rain everywhere all the time. But where it does, you might have to adjust outdoor plans. Be flexible just in case. The showers are going to be light, but just enough to make things inconvenient for those outdoor plans. Also enough to add a little bit of moisture to the fire fields. We never complain about that. Temperatures way below normal, but clearing out, warming up tomorrow, and the warming trend is going to continue. Were talking an inland heat wave by the latter half of next week. Lets focus on the shower chances which are going to be with us off and on as we head through the rest of the day. You see that radar freckle pattern on futurecast indicating that the showers are not going to be terribly widespread, but theyre going to be out there. They could happen literally anywhere across the bay area through the rest of the day. And this evening the shower chances come to an end as the storm system moves away, and we clear out as we head through the day on sunday. How much rain are we talking about . Not much overall. A few hundredths of an inch of total rainfall, and thats not even a guarantee across the board. There are going to be plenty of spots that the showers miss individual neighborhoods across the bay area. Kind of a typical late september rain chance overall. So keep the rain gear handy if youre heading out to hardly strictly bluegrass today. Well see temperatures warming up a little bit tomorrow when the sunshine returns. By the time we get to this evening, i think the forecast will be largely dry as the giants end their series with that team from down south. Temperatures in the lower 60s if youre heading out to oracle park. Before we get to that point, though, lets take a look at todays forecast. High temperatures which are way below normal, 10 to 15 degrees below average for inland parts of the bay area, including the santa clara valley, only around 70 degrees. Mid to upper 60s for highs around the bay. Only low 60s along the coast and half moon bay. Temperatures inland in the east bay only getting up to around 70 degrees in both concord and antioch. Upper 60s for San Francisco and oakland. The warmest spots where a little more sunshine is going to peek through those clouds, the north bay, temperatures reaching up into the low 70s on a more widespread basis. Its not warm, but its the closest well see to warm temperatures as we head into the afternoon. Lets take a look at the sevenday forecast. And well start with those inland parts of the bay area that are 10 to 15 degrees below normal today. Theyre going t
