Its astounding. Its really hard to believe. Thats insane. I didnt realize it was that bad. While the number is pretty staggering, i wish i could say that i was truly surprised or am truly surprised, for that matter, because of the lack of leadership in oakland City Government and the lack of accountability. Reporter officers say there are more stolen vehicles than the reported car breakins, 10,335. Officers admit most people dont report breakins anymore. We found several families on sunday checking out their recovered cars at a lot that contracts with the police department. My car was parked at coliseum b. A. R. T. I took my son to a baseball game last sunday and i came back and the car was gone. Reporter the families tell me their recovered cars were totaled. All four of my tires were stolen. They were all brandnew and all the windows were broken. Every was burnt to a crisp like there was no steering column, no seats. It was down to the wire. The back trunk was broken and gutted, everything. Reporter the city plans to install 300 cameras throughout oakland by early next year. The interim police chief believes that will help track down some of the stolen cars. We do see stolen vehicles being used in other crimes, parted out for money. Reporter jasmine is trying to stay strong and positive for her family. I know everything is going to be fine. I know that. Reporter carjacking is up as well. Oakland Police Report carjacking up 20 this year compared to last. Police say try to park in a garage, you can. Most of the people da did interview said they had a hyundai. Police say hyundais and kias are fairly easy to hotwire. We understand hyundai has reached out to some of their customers depending on the year and model to upgrade to better secure their cars. Across the bay in San Francisco, nearly 4,900 cars have been stolen, much lower than oaklands 10,000, but this is still an 11 increase in the city compared to last year. Our wallets are feeling the pinch of high gas prices now, the average price per gallon in california 5. 82 compared to the National Average of 3. 84 according to aaa. Thats up 57 cents from last month. Experts say the price of crude oil is going up around the world but is exasperated in california because for whatever reason refinery margins are going through the roof. I blame the fact its a finite resource and we got to recognize you use enough of something thats finite long enough, its going to get more expensive. We need to hurry up on getting off fossil fuels as if pollution is not enough of a reason. The prices are another. Global prices have gone up because saudi arabia slashed production by 1 Million Barrels a day. Some analysts predict they could continue to rise. Governor gavin newsom has vetoed a bill that would have required human drivers on board autonomous trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds. Union leaders and Truck Drivers had pushed for that legislation saying it would save hundreds of thousands of jobs. In a statement the governor referenced a 2012 law regulating selfdriving vehicles saying, this new measure was unnecessary. Union leaders and Truck Drivers say the bill would have helped address concerns about safety and job security. Folks living near reidhillview airport in san jose say they want it shut down. They claim the fuel burned is harming children. The pilots are pushing back. John ramos has the story. Reporter throw the doors open at an airport and the public will show up, but there are those who wish this airport in san jose didnt exist at all. The Community Festival at reidhillview airport drew thousands of people to get a closeup view of all kinds of flying machines. Shea sutton says the reaction of her 4yearold niece talia helped her feel like a kid again, too. After you get on the plane, its not a big deal, but seeing the actual airplane inside and seeing the joy in their eyes is great. Reporter david hovey said it helped that the event was happening at a Smaller Community airport like reidhillview. Its more fun because theyre smaller and everythings on a smaller space and, yeah, its not as busy and its just a great event. Reporter but not everyone shares his enthusiasm. At a park across the street from the runway a group of Community Activists gathered to renew their demand that the airport be closed. They say a county Commission Study shows elevated levels of lead in children living within a half mile of the airport and even though loaded fuel has been banned at reidhillview for three years, they say airplanes are still burning it. The lead has been banned, but the pilots will fly to mineta. Theyll fly to palo alto and bring the loaded fuel back to our community. This is not fair. Our children need to be protected. Reporter back at the airport pilot Diane Gaskill acknowledged that owners of some aircraft are, in fact, filling up with loaded fuel elsewhere. It protects the engine against misfiring, firing too soon and burning a hole in the top of the piston. Thats what can happen, very serious damage. Reporter is that enough for people to say im going over to mineta and fill up before i come back here . They have to. They dont have a choice or theyll destroy the engine. Reporter the irony is that reidhillview is already scheduled to be closed in 2031. An agreement between Santa Clara County and the faa expires, but San Jose City Council Member peter ortiz says its important to keep the pressure on so they dont backtrack on that plan, but if unloaded fuel is unsafe here, what about Mineta International . Should they close mineta . No. Reporter thats where theyre getting the loaded fuel from. That is. Reporter what about the neighborhoods near mineta . They are neighborhoods, but they have distance. Theres not individuals right directly here in the middle. There arent small planes flying over the families over there. Reporter for the county the health issue may not be the real reason to close the airport. The neighbors would like to see a park with swimming pools and open space, but the pilots suspect the county is eyeing the land as a prime location for a housing development. Thats all san jose is interested in having built at the moment. So thats what the residents are going to get here and they actually dont want that. They want this turned into some big park and open space and the thing they dont realize is airports are open space. Reporter the neighbors want the airport to close immediately. The pilots hope it will stay open forever, but the county may have its own reasons for wanting the facility to fly off into the sunset eight years from now. The airport has been around more than 80 years and there have been efforts to close it since the 1980s. Still ahead on the evening edition, the coliseum is closed for the season. We were there as as fans celebrated the team hoping it wont be their last home game. The future of the as is still uncertain. The fans went to the coliseum for the final home game of the year as the threat of las vegas looms even larger. Betty yu was at the game and spoke to fans who are soaking up what time they have left with the team. Yes. It was so lovely meeting you guys. Reporter alameda resident Rachel Delgado savored her time at the coliseum with fellow as fans after sundays game. Torkelson and that will do it, 31 on the putout. Reporter the as lost to the Detroit Tigers the last home game this season. It was kind of heartbreaking. I came with my very long time friend of 25 years and to see the low crowds was really, really kind of hard to come into that and not see that anybody really wanted to like share this beautiful spirit of as baseball with everybody. Reporter the as lost for the ninth team in 11 games and the game only drew a crowd of about 13,000 fans. I would love to come to the stadium. Ive been coming since i was about 8 years old. I would like to continue to come as long as theyll have us. Reporter some wore sell shirts and chanted sell the team, though owner john fisher said he intends to move the team to las vegas. I would prefer to sell just because fishers history. He doesnt spend at all on his team. Until they break ground in vegas, ill be going to games. As soon as they break ground in vegas, im looking for another team. Reporter the Nevada Teachers Union launched a campaign this summer to stop public funding for the construction of the proposed stadium for the as in las vegas. Nevadas priorities are misguided. Theyve been misguided for years. Weve said jokingly that the efforts of nevada politicians to get the as is basically why we get all the fs. So were 48th in education. We have the highest vacancy rate much teachers and largest class sizes in the country. Reporter the Nevada State Education Association is pushing a schools over stadiums referendum that it hopes will make the november 2024 ballot. That went smack down the left field line. Reporter in the meantime the as have said the team will still play at the coliseum for the 2024 season. What happens after that is up in the air. So we wanted to kind of soak it up and kind of just enjoy one last game in oakland coliseum, historic. One beautiful hurrah, nice. Reporter rachel and ryan caley said the as are accessible for Northern California fans. I came here as a kid because i could afford a b. A. R. T. Ticket and as ticket. We cant all afford to be giants and warriors fans. Its a beautiful atmosphere here and its something ive absolutely enjoyed since my childhood and i dont want it to go anywhere else. A loyal fan. The as current lease runs through the end of next season with plans to open the new stadium in vegas in 2028. Coming up, something out of this world has come down to earth. Well tell you about the long journey it took just to get here. Straight ahead in sports, warriors ready to make some noise. Giants still alive. And some Basketball Hall of famers spotted at a country club in danville, a fundraiser headlined by another hall of famer, an oakland legend looking to take his oaklandbased College Basketball program to another level. For the first time nasa returned an astroid sample to earth. The osirisrex spacecraft swung by earth sunday and delivered a sample collected from the astroid bennu. The samples were collected in 2020 as part of a sevenyear mission. The delivery was made by releasing a capsule with astroid rocks and soil from space toward a landing zone in the utah desert. Pretty cool, cant wait for them to crack that open. Lets take a live look outside at san jose. First alert chief meteorologist paul heggen joins us from our new virtual weather set. Paul. Theres plenty of sunshine still in the Santa Clara Valley while other parts of the bay area are seeing more cloud cover building in. This is the live view now from Salesforce Tower looking towards the golden gate. The clouds are becoming more substantial, should be a pretty sunset. The clouds will yield some showers across the bay area tonight. Clouds continue to thicken. A lot of us will just see sprinkles. North of the golden gate and in San Francisco and along the coast a better chance of light rain showers. We clear out quickly tuesday. A bit of a cooldown friday and saturday as we finish off september. Lets talk about the rain showers, our first rain chance of autumn, something that gets everybody excited. This is a typical early autumn rain chance where it doesnt amount to a whole lot. These showers are moving into Sonoma County kind of fall apart as they move into the coastal ranges. It will add up to at least a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall, modest amounts overall. The rain shower activity is having a hard time making its way farther inland in the east bay. Well switch over to futurecast. Eventually that rain activity will have a better chance of getting a bit farther inland but not into santa rosa until a few hours after the sun goes down, moving quickly across the bay area tonight and becoming lighter and lighter. If you are going to get anything more than sprinkles, inland in the east bay or Santa Clara Valley, its likely to be within a few hours of the sun coming up tuesday. By 8 00 a. M. Everything is gone. What are we talking about in terms of total rainfall amounts . This is forecast model data, so its never perfect, but it gives a good idea overall what to expect or not to expect in the Santa Clara Valley. You are not likely to see more than a few sprinkles, not even a trace of rainfall, same thing far inland in the east bay. A few spots may pick up maybe a 0. 01inch of rain, around concord and vallejo. Around the bay theres a better chance of seeing a little rainfall, a few hundredths of an inch in San Francisco. More substantial amounts are likely until farther north of the golden gate where maybe more than a 0. 1inch of rain will occur in santa rosa. It wont be enough to end fire season, but this is just the beginning of the rain chances that tend to ramp up more farther into october. Temperatures later tonight will drop down to closer to whats normal for this time of year, dropping down across the board into the low 60s, a few spots maybe dipping into the upper 50s. Those are fairly few and far between. Highs tomorrow return to almost exactly average. Lets take a look at those high temperatures for tomorrow and start with the north bay where temperatures will top out in the mid to upper 70s, should be a very nice afternoon, even the warmest days tuesday, wednesday, and thursday only sending us to near average high temperatures. We can definitely handle that in late september. Around the bay temperatures vary from 60s along the coast to 80 degrees in redwood city. Temperatures in the Santa Clara Valley mostly hovering around 80 degrees and inland in the east bay, the trivalley and delta likely to reach the low 80s on a more widespread basis. Lets bring in the sevenday forecast. Well start with inland parts of the bay area where temperatures will reach into the low 80s a few days, a mix of upper 70s and low 80s, trending downward as we finish the workweek heading into the weekend including the first couple days of october. Temperatures around the bay are going to be a bit more meager, a bit more reasonable in terms of the warmth inland balanced out by water of the bay, hovering in the low to mid70s and along the coast not much change, but that additional sunshine will push temperatures into the mid60s a little while, then lower half of the 60s friday and saturday, maybe a bit more warmup sunday and monday. Thanks, paul. Time for a check of whats going on at 6 00. Coming up at 6 00, its never easy to open up a new businesses, but one San Francisco store owner said it shouldnt be this hard. She tells us how an effort to preserve the character of the neighborhood have led to a lot of red tape and frustration. Plus bay area families that could be caught in the middle of another major school strike, the issues that have San Francisco teachers and staff ready to walk off the job, all that coming up at 6 00. Lets go to vern and some sports. We got baseball up top and the giants back home for the final week of the regular season. They host the padres tonight and the playoff odds, wait for it, are down to less than 1 . So youre telling me theres a chance. Heres what needs to happen. The giants win their final six games. The cubs lose their final six games. The marlins lose four of six. The reds lose two of five. The warriors will report for Training Camp next monday. All eyes will be on the point god, chris paul. The biggest addition to the roster this offseason, steve kerr still undecided if cp3 will start or come off the bench, but theres still plenty of time to talk about that. I really like chris because he likes phone calls and not texts. Chris is old school. He wants to talk. Weve had four or five great conversations this summer. Say it with me, liz, the raiders. Hey, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is in concussion protocol after last nights loss to the steelers. Jimmy g. Finished the game, but threw three interceptions. If he cant play sunday, brian hoyer will likely start for the silver and black. Basketball, hall of Famer Gary Payton is entering his third season as head coach of the Oakland University and hes working hard to build a winner in his hometown. Im just trying to start this and build this up to a point where everybodys going to recognize oakl
