A live look at that coming up in just a minute. All right, thank you. We start with the developing story thats difficult fortous talk about. A family Walking AroundSan Francisco last night had their lived upended when the 4yearold daughter was hit and killed by a car. It happened in the crosswalk at 4th and King Caltrain station and just down the road from oracle park where crowds of people were going to the giants game. Police stay girls father was pushing her across the intersection in a stroller when an suv hit the two of them. They were both rushed to the hospital with father with lifethreatening injuries but the 4yearold however didnt make it. The driver who hit them stayed on the scene and cooperated with police. Police say drugs and alcohol didnt appear to be factor in this accident. Over to the east bay. A group of voters believe price needs a push out. The controversial bay area da in Alameda County only in her seventh month and already people are saying they want her out of office. So heres what is really the Common Thread bemidnight most of the people who are behind the recall effort. Theyve all had to bury a loved one following violence in Alameda County. Sara donchey this morning introduces us to one family who says they have been victimized by the da decisions. Take a look. If anyone having walked in the shoes of a mother that lost a child for a senseless murder, they would never know how it feel. Reporter Cassandra Riley knows loss and grief and pain. Her son, lamar, was murdered in Alameda County earlier this year. Overprotector. Mama boy. That was my twin. Loved his daughter. Reporter the suspect was only 17 years old. Riley says in spite of her wishes, the Alameda County county da didnt charge him as an adult and her frustration is familiar to other victims milies. In fact, they describe it in an eerily similar way. I saw my son shot. In front of me on my porch and my daughter was shot as well. So if you have never been through that, you cannot tell us what goes on after you went through it and then you have to go through it again when you think you have justice, and then you turn around and you walk in the store and see your sons killer in the store because you didnt know they were let out. Reporter Brenda Grissom was so motivated by her own loss that she cofounded the group called s. A. F. E. The same group that tuesday marched to the courthouse to file paperwork to start the process to recall da pamela price. They were joined by other victims families. Price ran on a platform including reducing sentences for younger fenders and eliminating most sentencing enhancements and Holding Law Enforcement accountable. She explained her position in an interview with us last month. Anytime that we can divert someone from the criminal Justice System, that is a goal. Because the criminal Justice System has been shown to be racially biased. Reporter her supporters insist reform will take time. And claim the recall effort itself is racially motivated. But prices critics insist that this is not justice at all. Its not going to stop. Its not going to stop. Until we speak out. The people. Until we can get the justice that we feel that the victims families deserve. You know presenting both sides of the issues in our community is such a high value for us. So we reached out to pamela prices Office Multiple times to get her reaction to the latest developments and the headlines and so far though we can tell you theres been no call on the recall from price to gauge her reaction. But well keep trying. Time now for a look at the other top stories. The death toll in maui has sadly surpassed 100. Officials say at least 1300 people are still unaccounted for on the island. Now hawaiis Biggest Energy provider is facing several lawsuits that allege the company continued to supply power through electrical lines amid high wind warnings. Although the cause of the wildfire remains unknown, these lawsuits assume that the fire was ignited by strong winds knocking down those energized power lines. Well have a live report on this story from maui at 6 30. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is firing back at former President Trump as trump continues to claim election fraud. Now whats happening here at this particular location leaders of the district including the superintendent will be here to greet students on their first day of school. This part of the city. Its a program theyve been doing in other schools at the district and now cobb elementary will get to move forward with that Community School program as well. So a lot to look forward to in the morning ahead. Gianna . Yes, they do. And im excited to see all the kids and parents taking their kids for that first day of school. Shawn, before you go here, we want to show and go back in time a little bit a picture of you, my friend. Getting your school days started. Look at that right here, shawn. Reporter i know. As we were talking about earlier, i do not have the overalls anymore. I dont think i could pull off the overalls today. But a nice look back at what . Fashion was like in the early 90s. This was a graduation photo. I didnt have the typical back to school photo. That a lot of kids had as i was explaining i think the tiger mom and tiger dad in my parents well take a photo of you once you have accomplished something and you have a certificate to show some achievement. And then well take the photo. No pressure. You know we do have a psychologist coming up who can help shawn with the tiger mom and tiger dad from back in the day. Well get through it. So cute. And you still are. Reporter still dealing with it. Exactly. Shawn chitnis, thank you so much. Say hi this morning as they arrive to school and wave at them if theyve got the oshkosh bgosh overalls on this morning. I mean i feel like every kid has to wear that at some point right . I probably have a million pictures of my kids in overalls. You can kind of fell the age by the fashion in the photos and we can kind of tell your age from the fashion in the photos. Yes. This is true. All right, so time now is 6 10 in the morning. Good morning to you everybody. Your community station right there with you. With the back to school push to make sure our kids not only have waning mindset, but minds that are winning. How mental welcome back on this wednesday morning. In our community, as kids return to classrooms across the bay, schools are grappling with increased Mental Health issues among students. You know, three years after the pandemic, a lot of School Districts and leaders out there are still playing catchup. We hear from you teachers all the time. We know you are working hard to address the steady increase of cases about Mental Health. But as itay hod shows us some bay area schools are prioritizing men at Mental Health in an effort to curb what many are already calling a crisis. Reporter when cassandra lopez, a student in san jose at Overfelt High School was just 9 years old, she realized something about her was off. I would cry a lot and i didnt even know why in my head, it felt really heavy. Reporter for years, she prayed it was just a phase. But when the pandemic hit, things began to spin out of control. It kind of got to the point where i couldnt leave my house. I didnt really want to eat. Reporter it got so bad, that in 2021 she tried to end her life. Not once, but twice. I didnt see a point of living. Reporter then a chance encounter turned things around. Crying right here. In this hallway. And thats when i met lazaro. Reporter lazaro is lazaro jaimez, the School Social worker. When i met him, it felt like i finally had someone. I finally had someone that clicked with me. What was going through my mind. Reporter for the last two years, cassandra has been seeing him once a week and while her road to recovery is not over yet, she found something she thought shed lost. Hope. I kind of realized that you know, theres a lot of meaning in life. Even though im young, i know that i can get through it. Reporter according to the cdc, nearly one in four High School Students experienced similar challenges during covid. Cassandras School District recorded a 60 spike in Mental Health referrals since the pandemic began. Its one of the reasons the district spent a big chunk of its Covid Relief Fund not on new computers, but on more social workers. Since covid, there was a clear need to help students more than just academically. Reporter vito chiala is the principal. He says thanks to that money, his school was able to hire lazaro, doubling its Mental Health staff. That means being able to keep the Wellness Center open all day instead of just a few hours. First and foremost we have to take care of who they are as humans and who they are as people and that meant really not pretending their Mental Health issues didnt exist, but meeting them where they are and helping them to thrive and recover fully so they can engage in school and education. Reporter even lazaro says he couldnt believe how many students needed help. There was a lot of anxiety and a lot of depression and a lot of our students were struggling with suicidal thoughts. Reporter as for cassandra, shes a happy senior these days with dreams of becoming, wait for it, a social worker. Just want to be there for anyone that feels like this. Because no one should feel left alone. Hi. Reporter fighting to end the Mental Health crisis, by using her own experience to help others. And as we continue our back to School Coverage with a focus on Mental Health today, were bringing in a member of our community with information and a background to help. Psychologist and author dr. Alicia del prado joins us now. Thank you so much for coming in today and welcome to you. As the kids go back to school its really important to clue in on whats normal behavior and what isnt. Can you tell us the signs to look for that maybe a child is in distress . Yeah definitely. Extreme changes in behavior for your kiddos personality and age are definitely indicators to may believe lean in and see how theyre doing. Examples include anger and outbursts but also the continuum of other things such as withdrawing and really just avoiding people that they normally like to hang out with. And then what are some skills . So my 5yearold always has anger outbursts. Ageappropriate. What are we doing now . Whats normal and what are some skills as parents. Yeah definitely. The first thing actually i would recommend is checking in with yourself. How are you feeling . Right . And if im had a long day or i just need a minute, give yourself that minute. Before engaging with your 35yearold. Thats a great tip because we always have a long day. Here on the show. So its like you going to take five seconds and breathe, is this worth the discussion right now . Engagement. Such a perfect word, engage. For me as a parent it means interrupting this and i often find myself and its perfectly well intentioned at work or answering an e email or doing something that seems important in the moment but then to the title of your book, its time to talk and listen. And listen. Thats the most important thing. How as parents do we interrupt kind of what were used to doing and really tune into the person in front of us whether its our child or not . Exactly. So i think the listening part is crucial. And one way to actually do active listening is through empathy. And being empathetic and being able to stay attuned to your 5yearold and all the way up to 18yearold and more is extremely important. Believe it or not, that goes way further than giving them advice and problem solving. They know theyve been heard. Exactly. Right. Important. Obviously listening to your kids are so important. Something i struggle with just a little bit and you have a book here about this. Which is proud of my mommy. Is when my 4yearold always says to me, mommy. Dont go to work and dont leave. I think when i walk out the door, he might feel a sense of not feeling so safe sometimes. What do i say to him . But you are still going to be okay and ill be home when the day when my workday is done. Exactly. First mom guilt is real. I want to say. It is. And when you have that, its okay to have those feelings. One thing that im a fan of is just verbalizing that. If you are saying im going to miss you too. You know, and oh, you are feeling sad . Or you are going to miss mommy. So just being able to name that. Not change it. Not telling your kiddo to stop that feeling. But just bei
