We have preseason football starting in two days, we have been counting downment 9ers, the raiders, we will have more on the odds of who is going to take on and win this sunday. First, we have a lot of serious news to catch up with. I would like to bring it to sara donchey in the studio for more on that and we will see you in a few minutes afterwards, sara. All right, thank you, jules. The response to the maui fires just beginning. Today, locals are getting a first chance to check on their homes, a lot of them have nothing to go back to. At least 67 people have been killed in these fastmoving fires that wiped out the town. That number will probably rise again. Search and recovery teams are starting to go inside homes and buildings with cadaver dogs, the officials dont know how many people are missing, even. The communication is a major challenge, even now, with power out and cell service spotty. Femas director is in town to tour the devastation, 80 ever the town is gone. You can see all of the burned out cars lining front street. The towns main thoroughfare and the wreckage of the boats off of the harbor. The fastmoving flames incinerated the homes but spared others feet away. It is our first time coming back and knowing our house burned down. We have to the known anything for the last couple of days. There is no information coming through. So many things could of gone wrong. But, for us we lost a house. But our business is still here. A lot of survivors say they got no official warnings before three neighborhoods were overrun with fire. We told you how some jumped into the ocean to escape. This is brandnew video showing people wading in the water to be rescued. Look how that is. The coast guard says they pulled 17 people out. All of them are in stable condition. A santa rosa couple was in maui for their honeymoon. The husband new something bad was happening when the winds started whipping up because he had been through this before with the deadly tubbs fire in 2017. He said that experience helped them survive some very scary moments on the island. These two newlyweds you are about to meet were planning the honeymoon of a lifetime. Things changed quickly after they landed in maui. Reporter they tied the knot at a local beach last friday. They flew into maui on monday. On tuesday from their hotel room there is what they saw. A fire in the distance. High winds. The wind was more powerful in maui than in santa rosa. Reporter within hours the flames were raging out of control. Their hotel, just outside of lahaina no information since they lost power and had little cell signal. They can see flames getting closer and closer. I called my family to say goodbye to them, too. I really was not sure that i was going to make out of it. Reporter courtney said she was prepared to jump into the ocean if it meant survivals. The high winds, the experience from the santa rosa fires that we would be safer getting out of the area. Reporter alda, who evacuated from santa rosa in the tubbs fire went and got food and found water. They took a narrow back road to reach the airport. They slept in their rental car as they tried to get a flight out. They finally reached honolulu on thursday. We get the zoom interview as they waited at the Honolulu Airport for a flight back to the oakland airport. I felt like it was worse just because there is really only like two ways to go out and one way was completely shutdown and closed in santa rosa there were at least multiple ways out. Reporter a local firefighter say there are a lot of similarities between the maui fires and the tubbs fire. Both wind drench and destroyed neighborhoods not just homes but businesses destroyed that is exactly what we saw in the coffee park areas just businesses that you would of never imagined would be the victim of a wildfire. Reporter they want to raise awareness. They hope the bay area will help with the rebuilding efforts it was our honeymoon but we are okay, we are safe, we can take a trip somewhere else, but our hearts go out to those folks in lahaina and their families tell take years not months to rebuild the communities. Six years later here people are still rebuilding homes in coffee park neighborhood. The maui fires are bringing up difficult memories for another community, 85 people were killed when the camp fire leveled the town of paradise five years ago. The fires played out in a similar way. Strong winds drove the winds into the small town in the sierra foothills leaving people with little time to get out in the middle of the night. 18,000 buildings destroyed. Maui and paradise now have the grim distinction of experiencing the deadly u. S. Wildfires in more than a century. It has always been our fear that someone else, another community would experience Something Like this. We hoped it would never happen again. But, unfortunately we see this happening. Over the last five years paradise has installed 21 Early Warning sirens and improved infrastructure to be more fire resistant. It has been a anxious wait for families not able to communicate with their loved ones on maui. Yesterday we talked to parent whos were separated from their kids during the fires. Kenny choi checked in on them today. Reporter for more than two days shawn and his wife could only wonder if their 15monthold baby luke and 7yearold son matthew were safe without any way of contacting them. Cell phone reception . The hardest hit parts of the island shutdown. They left their young kids with their grandfather at a Hotel Tuesday afternoon to buy groceries in lahaina when the inferno ignited and it was fueled by hurricanelike winds there is where it is at. Reporter road closures played it difficult for families to reunite. Shawns wife found a way to hop on to a special bus late on wednesday taking trapped tourists back to the hot expel reuniting mom and her children. I am so excited that they are with me now and, yeah, beyond happy. It is just. Unbelievable. Reporter this family is grateful to take a flight back home to the bay area knowing the devastation has left so many reeling, losing homes and lives. We know from what we have seen that people here in maui need a lot of help and resources. Just encourage people to keep on giving, keep on encouraging, keep on praying. Some families extremely fortunate to reunite. The major concern tonight, the more than 1,000 still believed to be unaccounted for as search as rescue operations continue. What an incredibly difficult situation about a dozen red cross volunteers based here in the bay area have left to hawaii for support. And more are on the way. Tom tanner and michelle averal left from san joses airport from honolulu for a two week deployment. They are ready to go anywhere and be flexible depending on what is needed. It is an extremely special place. I got married there in maui. I just had so many wonderful family memories and, i just want to help them heal as best as i can. Family memories because she has had a home on maui for 25 years. She does not know if it is Still Standing right now. She has a lot of friends who live and work in lahaina that lost everything. United airlines are part of our local emergency response. There afternoon a wide body plane left sfo carrying 40 tons of supplies for the red cross and planning return carrying passengers that are leaving the islands. By the way, important note, we have been compiling information how you can help or dough plate to relief efforts in maui. Under the top story section on kpix. Com. The fires feel personal for a lot of people that visited hawaii or have friends and family there. We have heard from several of them. We want to get back to Juliette Goodrich, you are covering 49ers preseason. But the news broke and it really has effected people all over including there in vegas, right . Reporter absolutely. Is is very personal. They call las vegas the ninth island, they have the Third Largest population of native hawaiians that live in the u. S. I met up with a Business Owner who grew up in lahaina and his family is there. They lost everything. So, you will see in my story at 7 00 tonight how they are gathering donations, the community, coming together in support to help those loved ones and community members. No, not to see barry manalo but to see where money and magic meet. Let me explain there is the largest location in vegas, internationally, actually, to place sports bets. On super bowl sunday, that is happening in 2024 on cbs, this floor will be crowded with people placing their bets. And get this. Those are the people that can afford to sit here. Are they called the whales . Sometimes, yes. Okay, i got the lingo. Very good. And now for real inside information. I think that the 49ers, again, have more experience, they are a four point favorite over the raiders. It is an exhibition game but i believe they have the advantage. So, bet it all . No. [ laughter ] dont bet it all. You know, what i find amazing . There are so many creative ones like people betting on what color gatorade they are going to pour on the coachs head. Gatorade, coin toss, when the first commercial hits, all kenneds of stuff. A wardrobe malfunction during halftime. Just saying. Easy now, easy now. You got to see firsthand what is happening in practice. Absolutely. Yeah and they get a lot out of these practices, more than the games. They have more time, they can focus more on technique and reps. 2minute drills. All kenneds of things like extended play drills. All kinds of things like extended play drills. And the players will tell you, we get a lot out of this. Going up against a guy in a different uniform. As a trained sports observer, tell me how jimmy g. Looked, tell me how purdy looked and how lance is looking. He is going to be the starter this coming sunday on kpix. Jimmy g. He had his problems last week with interceptions. But, boy, at practice today he was carving up the 49er defense. He was going right down the field surgically taking down the park. Purdy he is solid. A solid guy. He goes about his business.
