It was absolutely crazy to see yesterday morning. A fire so big and so hot it ripped down scaffolding and even cracked windows across the street. Whats really disturbing though is San Francisco firefighters said this cocould hahave easily y ta out an entitire block. Neighb in heys valley said they trir to warnrn the cicity months ago that Something Like this could happen. They told betty yu they got crickets in response. Reporter this was the view from brendan mahoneys home. It took more than 100 firefighters to contain the fastmoving four alarm fire at oak and octavia around 6 00 a. M. It happened at a building under construction. I was awoken by my dogs and i looked out the window of my bedroom to the building behind us here. Which was fully involved. Reporter no injuries were reported. But the fire displaced eight residents. The heat cracked windows onbuildings across the street. This isnt the first time fires have happened in the immediate area. I know that there have been a number of recent fires. Especially here on this stretch of octavia. There was a car fire, theres been one or two encampment fires. Reporter in fact back in may the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association sent a letter to city leaders, including the mayor, drawing attention to the problem. We basically got no response. So we outlined our concerns that something more major could happen. We dont know if the fire is a result of, you know, a homeless encampment. But what we do know is that weve had a string of fires up and down here that have caused grave concern for neighbors. Reporter she saw the flames from his kitchen window. He is lived in the same apartment for decades. As far as the encampments. They come and go but theyre here more than they are not. I think that the city does the best job that they can in trying to provide services for everybody but its difficult when people dont want to accept services, its aniongoing issue. But i think that the employees of the city really do try to do their best to keep us safe. And our other top stories. The murder of cash app founder bob lee has attracted international attention. Now a judge has decided the man accused of stabbing him is set to stand trial for murder in San Francisco. During a two day hearing prosecutors made their case against knee ma me men knee with Surveillance Video and expert witnesses who testified dna from both men was on the knife used to stab lee to death in rincon hill back in april. Now the District Attorney had previously released Text Messages suggesting that he had a fight with momeni the night he died. We heard from lees exwife for the First Time Since he was killed. She has no reason to believe lee and momeni were friends before his death. Hes admitted to it saying that it was selfdefense. He stabbed him. The fact he stabbed him multiple times at his thats disgusting. I dont think that they were friends. I had never heard him mentioned. Bob and i were very close. We speak all the time. Never once heard him mention that name. Either of the names to be honest with you. So no. Im sorry, i dont think that they were friends. But the defense claims everything points to a possible manslaughter charge instead. I told the judge i go listen, if anything they have proven manslaughter because they dont have the requisite malice, do you remember in the motion for bond. The government said this was premeditated and took him to a remote and distant location. Thats not true. We still havent heard from his sister who allegedly had a relationship with lee. Time to build trust between Law Enforcement and the neighborhoods they serve. We take a look at some of the events for National Night out. Plus, were still on the bay area beat, we have a whole lot of block parties last night. It was National Night out. And neighborhoods on both sides of the bay participated. Its an annual event for police to build relationships with their communities and it comes at a time in a lot of people in the bay area have serious concerns about safety and crime where they live. Looks like people are having a good time there. This was a block party near San Franciscos city college. Lots of families were there for games and food. People in the Oakland Hills turned out as well. This is on green view drive and while it was supposed to believe a time to enjoy yourself, there have been a lot of serious issues happening in parts of oakland and elsewhere. Neighbors told us stories of being carjacked and robbeviolently and have their own concerns about what police should be doing to confront it all. They themselves also struggling with a public image issue of like i waited three days and the police never game. Again, lets unpack that narrative and lets have real conversations with the people who are doing this great work. And i think tonight allows us to have those conversations. Oakland residents have been pushing for a state of emergency to help get a handle on a spike in violent crime. Last week a 75yearold woman was home alone when two intruders forced their way in. Then she opened fire on them. Oakland residents tell our Katie Nielsen two men shot backfiring almost 20 rounds at the homeowner who didnt get hurt. She still in jeopardy being an elderly woman. Trying to protect herself. Reporter a neighbor who lives a few doors down from where the Home Invasion happened said he didnt wanttous use his name or show his face on camera saying he doesnt want to be the next target. He says the entire neighborhood is on edge. This neighborhood used to be nice and quiet. And the only thing you had to worry about were the skunk and raccoons and possums and stuff like that in your yard. Reporter he says now, residents dont feel safe. Partly because they dont think police will show up fast enough when they call 911. We have to protect ourselves now. Because if something happens, i dont have time to wait for the police because nine times out of ten you are going to be put put on hold, five, ten minutes. Reporter there are 712 budgeted for all officers the lowest in about 20 years which means fewer officers available to respond to those 911 calls. Most of us in the Police Department dont feel the level of service were providing with as few Police Officers we have is at a level that our residents want. So earlier this year, mayor sheng thao fired oak and place chief armstrong. Now its nearly six months later and still no one in the permanent post but people will have a chance to at least say their piece about what they want to see in a new leader. The Police Commission will hold a series of inperson forums starting saturday and also launched the own line survey Consulting Firm is now working with the commission to come up with a short list of candidates. Ultimately though, its up to the mayor to decide who it will be. Well, that york fire still tearing through the desert and unfortunately it could change the famous landscape forever. Californias biggest wildfire of the year so far has scorched a 125 square mile radius along the nevada border. Thats an area the size of fremont and San Francisco combined. The fire is now 23 contained but nobody knows the full extent of the damage just yet. Been burning since last friday. Im sure all the warm temperatures that were getting is not homing that. Think about that. Theyve had recordbreaking heat the whole last month and now theyre getting monsoonal moisture but still its scorcher down there. And they still have more summer to come. Lets dive into the forecast here. Actually on the phone last night with my aunt who lives in las vegas. All my family is back home. And they were so excited to just get that monsoonal moisture that swept in. Theyre dealing with their tone battle down there but back here in the bay its a completely different monster. We have low pressure offshore and that is a really big contributing factor to how our forecast looks for the rest of this week. This system just offshore will allow for windy conditions into the afternoon hours. More low clouds and a little bit of drizzle along the coastline too. You definitely didnt notice it off in the east inland hills but San Francisco and the coastline, it was kind of cool yesterday. And a lot more gloomy than usual. Heres the winds. Throughout the next couple of days i mean were going to be seeing a very strong onshore flow into the afternoon hours. We notice its today alone just into dinner time wind gusts anywhere up to around 40 Miles Per Hour in the north bay and about 30mileperhour winds anywhere from San Francisco ranging even up into fairfield. Where its still breezy inland too. Speaking of the inland areas lets start off with a live look this morning with partly cloudy skies just over the Santa Clara Valley. This is what were waking up to this morning. San jose still sitting in the 60s and well am up in the 70s this afternoon. But unlike yesterday, now were in the low 70s. Yesterday we were in the upper 70s, the day before we were in the 80s and you see this cooling trend for all of us throughout the bay area. As we head into our weeks forecast. I mean still low 60s along the coast and 70s down in the Santa Clara Valley and hayward only topping off today at 67 degrees and even our friends over into brentwood and antioch where usually triple digits at this time of year were sitting in the mid to low 80s this afternoon. With 60s Still Holding on tight to the heart of San Francisco. So that puts us below average by about two degrees just near antioch but about six degrees near San Francisco. Basically what im saying no matter where you live were not where we should believe for this time of year, a little bit cooler and well take what we can get especially with everybody else dealing with that wild heat especially to the south of us. Lets head over to the giants though. Heading out to oracle park today. Expect 60s quickly turning into 50s. The next six to ten days now. The Climate Prediction Center actually going to be sitting right where we should be for this time of year. As we extend into the longrange models. So what does is that moan . Well, i will say this. We have a mini heat wave this weekends forecast. We warm up into the triple digits by sunday. But then quickly get right back down to the 80s for the inland east bay as soon as tuesday. Its a shortlived event of course it always lands on the weekend though right . San francisco here we go. 67 for now. Once we head into the friday forecast, 70s heading into this weekend. Plenty of sunshine for all of us throughout the bay area. Heading into this weekend too. So theres something to look forward to. Jocelyn . All right, jess paying attention to the forecast for the giants game tonight. With the roadways, this morning, we are dealing with some heavy traffic conditions especially for our supercommuters of course. You are looking at about 48 minute drive from 205 to 680. Also keep in mind, we are dealing with another high wind advisory this morning. So just be extra careful as you make your way through there. The benicia bridge by the way also dealing with a high wind advisory. At the bay bridge the metering lights are still off and ukase its not looking too bad out there. You are looking at about a seven minute drive from the toll plaza over to the city. At the san mateo bridge heading westbound things are pretty busy. 12 minute drive from 880 over to 101 and of course continue
