Warned it would happen and now it has. We outlined our concerns. Look at what happened today. They say they told the city about what happened, but nobody listened. Hi, im sara donchey. What a way to wake up. Imagine seeing this outside your window. A fire so big and so hot it ripped out scaffolding and may have cracked windows across the street. Whats really disturbing is that San Francisco firefighters say this could have easily taken out an entire city block. But tonight neighbors in his valley told us they tried to warn the city months ago that Something Like this could happen. They tried to tell our busy you, they got crickets in response. Reporter firefighters are still here on the scene putting out hot spots and parts of the block is still closed to traffic. While the cause is not yet known, neighbors in this area are concerned encampments may have played a role. This is the view from brendans home taking more than 100 firefighters to contain the fast moving fouralarm fire around four alarm. I was awoken by my dogs. I woke up to the building here, which was fully involved. Reporter no injuries reported, but the fire displaced eight residents. The heat cracked windows on buildings across the street. This isnt the first time fires have happened in the immediate area. I know there have been a number of recent fires especially here on this stretch of octavia. Reporter in fact back in may, the hays Valley Neighborhood Association sent a letter to city leaders, including the mayor drawing attention to the problem. We basically got no response, so we outlined our concerns that something more major could happen. Now we dont know if this fire is a result of a homeless encampment. But what we do know, weve had a string of fires up and down here causing grave concerns for neighbors. Reporter hes lived in the same encampment for decades. They come and go, but the encampments are here more than not. Reporter the city staid in a statement theyre aware of past incidents related to encampments. They understand residents are frustrated. The mayor is committed to keeping our streets clean through regular homeless outreach. Its an ongoing issue, but i think the employees of this had city, they really do try to do their best to keep us safe. The Fire Department told us it could be early tomorrow morning before that stretch of octavia reopens. Thats a busy intersection. A lot of people come here to visit to see the joshua trees, which apparently are hindering the Fire Fighting efforts. Theyre trying not to destroy them. Its not going to affect the air quality and smoke burning in a different direction. Lets take a look at the air quality map, which is pretty much green across the board. Yellow dots mixed in from the air sensor, but good air quality from the bay area today and mostly good air quality tomorrow. Any smoke will be drifting down from the flat fire, still burning in southwestern it oregon. A little bit of that along the coast, but you wont notice tomorrow.
