>> yes. >> how many is a few? >> over 100. >> sneakers taking over the workplace, even in the halls of congress. this is the "cbs weekend news" from chicago with adriana diaz. good evening. sweltering, scorching, sizzling. there are many ways to say it is hot. and millions of americans are once again this weekend feeling it. but there is relief in sight, including in the steamy southwest, where the heat has been historic, punishing, and deadly. tonight, more than 100 million americans in at least 20 states remain under heat alerts and advisories, from coast to coast. cbs's michael george leads us off tonight from new york. michael, good evening. >> reporter: adriana, good evening. and it's a humid, sweltering evening. over 90 most of the day, with a heat index closer to 100. the northeast getting scorched this weekend, capping off the hottest july ever recorded. when it's this hot, access to cooling isn't just about comfort. it can be a matter of life and death. >> i am concerned, because if the power goes out, you know, i have -- my mom is elderly, the ac blowing out would not be okay for us in the heat. and especially, like, the kids, too. >> reporter: as new yorkers try to cool off, power grids are at risk of overheating, too. the city's utility company is warning people to use their acs only as much as needed. >> everyone is using their air conditioners, and what it can do is, it can overheat our system. and that can cause outages. >> reporter: temperatures are so hot in tucson, arizona, even cacti are dying. phoenix has spent nearly a month enduring temperatures over 110 degrees. wild weather in the midwest, as people spotted this tornado near iowa falls. a heat-related tragedy in lake station, indiana. humane society officials say as many as ten police dogs were killed when the ac failed in the truck they were being transported in. in minnesota, the lack of rain has been devastating for farmers. >> we're, i don't know, three, a good three inches behind, and so, that's really affected our corn crop. >> reporter: the heat brought this unwelcome visitor to a woman's home in burbank, california. he thought he'd cool off in her pool before taking a nap in a tree. in new york, tourists hoping to enjoy a summer sight-seeing cruise are now questioning their decision. >> pretty hot, but we are here to enjoy new york city. >> reporter: now, if you want to stay cool indoors without putting a strain on the power grid, energy officials say the magic number to set your thermostat to, 78 degrees. adriana? >> good to know. michael george, thank you. let's get the forecast now from meteorologist paul goodloe from our partners at the weather channel. >> adriana, a lot of people want to know, when will this end? we're in the midst of ending it here in the northeast. new england, at least temporarily. the cold front is coming through with lots of storms, strong and severe throughout the rest of this evening. and then as we head on towards sunday, the sun comes up and it's a different atmosphere here. humidity has dropped across the northeast, parts of the great lakes, even new england. and our temperatures, some 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday -- or today, even yesterday, as well. so, what you see is what it feels like. there's no heat indices across the northeast. the rest of the country tomorrow still in the steam bath here. these are actual temperatures. and guess what? they're hot, it's humid, and it will stay that way, even into next week. we're talking the heat builds back into the southeast for much of this coming week. >> paul goodloe of the weather channel. to politics now. former president donald trump is on the campaign trail in erie, pennsylvania rallying supporters. this as speculation swirls that he faces another indictment and deepening legal peril. cbs's christina ruffini has more, including news from a republican gathering in iowa. christina? >> reporter: the weather is not the only thing that's hot. the race for the white house is heating up. both president biden and former president trump may be learning that one of their biggest political liabilities could be close to home. ♪ one could end up going to prison ♪ >> reporter: seemingly undeterred by an unfortunate choice of entrance music, or his mounting legal troubles, former president trump told iowa republicans last night, he plans to win. >> there's only one candidate, and you know who that candidate is, who is going to get the job done. >> reporter: three new charges were added to the federal case against trump in florida this week, including an alleged violation of the espionage act for supposedly sharing a confidential war plan with guests at one of his clubs. >> this is highly confidential. hello, iowa! >> reporter: so far, only a few of trump's lesser known republican rivals have called out his legal issues. >> donald trump is running to stay out of prison. and if we elect -- >> reporter: that's because the former president is still very popular with the gop base. leading many of his primary contenders to focus their fire on president biden. >> i truly do believe that president joe biden has weakened this country. in two short years. >> reporter: several have criticized the 80-year-old for initially failing to acknowledge the paternity of a seventh grandchild, fathered by his son, hunter. >> i have six grandchildren, and i'm crazy about them. >> reporter: yesterday, president biden issued a statement, acknowledging the little girl named navy. saying, quote, this is not a political issue, it's a family matter. but potential republican rivals seemingly disagree. >> when you go and you talk about family values, it's odd he wouldn't acknowledge one of his grandchildren. >> i want you to know, i know how many grandchildren i have. >> reporter: now, in that same statement, president biden said he and first lady jill biden just want what's best for their grandkids, including navy. adriana? >> christina, thank you. tonight, five people are recovering after they were shot in seattle. dozens of rounds were fired in a parking lot toward a community outreach event. two of the victims inured critically. police say they are searching for at least two gunmen. now, to the war in ukraine. tonight, new video from the front lines nearby bakhmut, as ukrainian troops push forward against russian forces. russian missiles also struck targets in the city of dnipro. a cbs news crew was nearby when those rockets hit. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. we had just arrived here in dnipro after driving several hours from kyiv, when we heard two back-to-back booms. this apartment complex was one of two buildinings hit by russi hypersonic missiles. its top floor almost totally destroyed. stunned bystanders watchched as smoke billllowed into ththe sky. neighbors counted their blessings. "windows were blown out right in front of my eyes," said this man. ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy called it russian missile terror. and posted this video, acknowledging the second missile hit this building, used by ukraine's security services. like the cia and fbi rolled into one. its government link obvious. the mayor said it's been largely empty for months. ukraine's security services building was targeted twice before. this third missile finally hitting its mark. as for this apartment complex, it's a new build, but thankfully, few people had moved in. like margarita. she says her husband was inside doing renovations only an hour before russia's attack. >> i hate this country, this people, that they are do nothing, they are just sitting, watching tv, listen to their propaganda. >> reporter: just a few hours earlier, russia claimed it shot down two missiles filed from ukraine. fragments from one damaged buildings and injured 15 people. and today, ukraine's military released this footage of troops storming russian trenches on the eastern front line nearby bakhmut. and president zelenskyy nearby in an underground bunker handing out awards to special ops forces in a morale boost. but the priority for ukraine's military is to push south, nearly 100 miles, adriana. and the goal is to cut off russia's vital land access to occupied crimea. >> rami, thank you. today in japan, another victory for katie ledecky. she is now america's most decorated swimmer. at least by one measure. she won her 16th individual world title, surpassing michael phelps for the most individual gold medals at the world championships. ledecky's victory in the 800-meter freestyle marked the sixth time she's won that event. that is also a record. tonight, there are new concerns about the safety of rides at amusement parks and summer fairs. this ride would not stop as riders pleaded with operators to pull the plug. the latest example of trouble. cbs's elise preston is in los angeles with more. good evening, elise. >> reporter: good evening to you, adriana. a break in the heat here in southern california has many enjoying the outdoors, but for those seeking an adrenaline rush, it can come with some risks. thrill rides are a staple of summer, and as more fairs and carnivals kick off, so do concerns of the danger. this weekend, a second crack was found in the metal of one of the world's tallest roller coasters. the fury 325 in charlotte, north carolina, closed june 30th after a father on the ground spotted a support beam bending from a break. >> i look up and i see light through the pole. >> reporter: park officials say they are still conducting tests and maintenance. popular ride at a park outside new york city is also shut down after a terrifying malfunction. earlier this week, thrill seekers on the music express were stuck spinning backwards for about four minutes. the ride finally stopped when crews shut off the power. park officials blame an electrical problem. inspectors in the chicago area are trying to figure out how a child was thrown at least ten feet from this ride. the 10-year-old boy is finally home, recovering from serious injuries. >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: and earlier this month, in wisconsin -- >> this is just scary. >> reporter: a roller coaster got stuck, stranding riders upside down for three hours. each year, there are about 32,000 injuries from amusement park rides alone. injuries increase during the summer, because more people are outside swimming, participating in sports, and for kids, playing as hard as children always do. adriana? >> yes. >> how many is a few? >> over 100. >> sneakers taking over the workplace, even in the halls of congress. this is the "cbs weekend news" from chicago with adriana diaz. good evening. sweltering, scorching, sizzling. there are many ways to say it is hot. and millions of americans are once again this weekend feeling it. but there is relief in sight, including in the steamy southwest, where the heat has been historic, punishing, and deadly. tonight, more than 100 million americans in at least 20 states remain under heat alerts and advisories, from coast to coast. cbs's michael george leads us off tonight from new york. michael, good evening. >> reporter: adriana, good evening. and it's a humid, sweltering evening. over 90 most of the day, with a heat index closer to 100. the northeast getting scorched this weekend, capping off the hottest july ever recorded. when it's this hot, access to cooling isn't just about comfort. it can be a matter of life and death. >> i am concerned, because if the power goes out, you know, i have -- my mom is elderly, the ac blowing out would not be okay for us in the heat. and especially, like, the kids, too. >> reporter: as new yorkers try to cool off, power grids are at risk of overheating, too. the city's utility company is warning people to use their acs only as much as needed. >> everyone is using their air conditioners, and what it can do is, it can overheat our system. and that can cause outages. >> reporter: temperatures are so hot in tucson, arizona, even cacti are dying. phoenix has spent nearly a month enduring temperatures over 110 degrees. wild weather in the midwest, as people spotted this tornado near iowa falls. a heat-related tragedy in lake station, indiana. humane society officials say as many as ten police dogs were killed when the ac failed in the truck they were being transported in. in minnesota, the lack of rain has been devastating for farmers. >> we're, i don't know, three, a good three inches behind, and so, that's really affected our corn crop. >> reporter: the heat brought this unwelcome visitor to a woman's home in burbank, california. he thought he'd cool off in her pool before taking a nap in a tree. in new york, tourists hoping to enjoy a summer sight-seeing cruise are now questioning their decision. >> pretty hot, but we are here to enjoy new york city. >> reporter: now, if you want to stay cool indoors without putting a strain on the power grid, energy officials say the magic number to set your thermostat to, 78 degrees. adriana? >> good to know. michael george, thank you. let's get the forecast now from meteorologist paul goodloe from our partners at the weather channel. >> adriana, a lot of people want to know, when will this end? we're in the midst of ending it here in the northeast. new england, at least temporarily. the cold front is coming through with lots of storms, strong and severe throughout the rest of this evening. and then as we head on towards sunday, the sun comes up and it's a different atmosphere here. humidity has dropped across the northeast, parts of the great lakes, even new england. and our temperatures, some 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday -- or today, even yesterday, as well. so, what you see is what it feels like. there's no heat indices across the northeast. the rest of the country tomorrow still in the steam bath here. these are actual temperatures. and guess what? they're hot, it's humid, and it will stay that way, even into next week. we're talking the heat builds back into the southeast for much of this coming week. >> paul goodloe of the weather channel. to politics now. former president donald trump is on the campaign trail in erie, pennsylvania rallying supporters. this as speculation swirls that he faces another indictment and deepening legal peril. cbs's christina ruffini has more, including news from a republican gathering in iowa. christina? >> reporter: the weather is not the only thing that's hot. the race for the white house is heating up. both president biden and former president trump may be learning that one of their biggest political liabilities could be close to home. ♪ one could end up going to prison ♪ >> reporter: seemingly undeterred by an unfortunate choice of entrance music, or his mounting legal troubles, former president trump told iowa republicans last night, he plans to win. >> there's only one candidate, and you know who that candidate is, who is going to get the job done. >> reporter: three new charges were added to the federal case against trump in florida this week, including an alleged violation of the espionage act for supposedly sharing a confidential war plan with guests at one of his clubs. >> this is highly confidential. hello, iowa! >> reporter: so far, only a few of trump's lesser known republican rivals have called out his legal issues. >> donald trump is running to stay out of prison. and if we elect -- >> reporter: that's because the former president is still very popular with the gop base. leading many of his primary contenders to focus their fire on president biden. >> i truly do believe that president joe biden has weakened this country. in two short years. >> reporter: several have criticized the 80-year-old for initially failing to acknowledge the paternity of a seventh grandchild, fathered by his son, hunter. >> i have six grandchildren, and i'm crazy about them. >> reporter: yesterday, president biden issued a statement, acknowledging the little girl named navy. saying, quote, this is not a political issue, it's a family matter. but potential republican rivals seemingly disagree. >> when you go and you talk about family values, it's odd he wouldn't acknowledge one of his grandchildren. >> i want you to know, i know how many grandchildren i have. >> reporter: now, in that same statement, president biden said he and first lady jill biden just want what's best for their grandkids, including navy. adriana? >> christina, thank you. tonight, five people are recovering after they were shot in seattle. dozens of rounds were fired in a parking lot toward a community outreach event. two of the victims inured critically. police say they are searching for at least two gunmen. now, to the war in ukraine. tonight, new video from the front lines nearby bakhmut, as ukrainian troops push forward against russian forces. russian missiles also struck targets in the city of dnipro. a cbs news crew was nearby when those rockets hit. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. we had just arrived here in dnipro after driving several hours from kyiv, when we heard two back-to-back booms. this apartment complex was one of two buildinings hit by russi hypersonic missiles. its top floor almost totally destroyed. stunned bystanders watchched as smoke billllowed into ththe sky. neighbors counted their blessings. "windows were blown out right in front of my eyes," said this man. ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy called it russian missile terror. and posted this video, acknowledging the second missile hit this building, used by ukraine's security services. like the cia and fbi rolled into one. its government link obvious. the mayor said it's been largely empty for months. ukraine's security services building was targeted twice before. this third missile finally hitting its mark. as for this apartment complex, it's a new build, but thankfully, few people had moved in. like margarita. she says her husband was inside doing renovations only an hour before russia's attack. >> i hate this country, this people, that they are do nothing, they are just sitting, watching tv, listen to their propaganda. >> reporter: just a few hours earlier, russia claimed it shot down two missiles filed from ukraine. fragments from one damaged buildings and injured 15 people. and today, ukraine's military released this footage of troops storming russian trenches on the eastern front line nearby bakhmut. and president zelenskyy nearby in an underground bunker handing out awards to special ops forces in a morale boost. but the priority for ukraine's military is to push south, nearly 100 miles, adriana. and the goal is to cut off russia's vital land access to occupied crimea. >> rami, thank you. today in japan, another victory for katie ledecky. she is now america's most decorated swimmer. at least by one measure. she won her 16th individual world title, surpassing michael phelps for the most individual gold medals at the world championships. ledecky's victory in the 800-meter freestyle marked the sixth time she's won that event. that is also a record. tonight, there are new concerns about the safety of rides at amusement parks and summer fairs. this ride would not stop as riders pleaded with operators to pull the plug. the latest example of trouble. cbs's elise preston is in los angeles with more. good evening, elise. >> reporter: good evening to you, adriana. a break in the heat here in southern california has many enjoying the outdoors, but for those seeking an adrenaline rush, it can come with some risks. thrill rides are a staple of summer, and as more fairs and carnivals kick off, so do concerns of the danger. this weekend, a second crack was found in the metal of one of the world's tallest roller coasters. the fury 325 in charlotte, north carolina, closed june 30th after a father on the ground spotted a support beam bending from a break. >> i look up and i see light through the pole. >> reporter: park officials say they are still conducting tests and maintenance. popular ride at a park outside new york city is also shut down after a terrifying malfunction. earlier this week, thrill seekers on the music express were stuck spinning backwards for about four minutes. the ride finally stopped when crews shut off the power. park officials blame an electrical problem. inspectors in the chicago area are trying to figure out how a child was thrown at least ten feet from this ride. the 10-year-old boy is finally home, recovering from serious injuries. >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: and earlier this month, in wisconsin -- >> this is just scary. >> reporter: a roller coaster got stuck, stranding riders upside down for three hours. each year, there are about 32,000 injuries from amusement park rides alone. injuries increase during the summer, because more people are outside swimming, participating in sports, and for kids, playing as hard as children always do. adriana?
