the "cbs weekend news" from new york, with jericka duncan. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> duncan: good evening and thanks for joining us on this sunday. speaker of the house nancy pelosi lead a secret congressional trip to kyiv. the meeting was revealed today. pelosi is the highest ranking american lawmaker to visit ukraine and volodymyr zelenskyy since russia's invasion more than two months ago. also today with the war's casualties mounting, ukrainians visited cemeteries across the country, observing the orthodox christian day of the dead. but there were some glimmers of hope for some civilians sheltered at a steel plant in mariupol. cbs' charlie d'agata has more tonight. >> reporter: good evening, we got confirmation today in a president zelenskyy tweet that the evacuation of civilians at the steel works plant had begun. he said do far around a hundred people had been evacuated. they are working on the evacuation of many more in the coming days. the first few residents to escape from beneath the steel plant of mariupol described the hell they endured for weeks. >> ( translated ): when the shells started landing i thought my heart would stop. and i would not survive. >> reporter: they're now headed to the relative safety of ukrainian held territory. even though the u.n. said it had brokered a deal with the russians and red cross, the first successful evacuation after so many failed attempts still came as something of a surprise. as did this: house speaker nancy pelosi greeted by president zelenskyy on the streets of kyiv along with six other democrats, a show of support to discuss america's additional $33 billion u.s. aid package to you crane. package to ukraine. >> we are here to say thank you for your fight to freedom and your fight is a fight for everyone. and so, our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done. >> reporter: but winning seems a long way off. the russian military releasing this video they say shows their high precision missile attack on odesa's military airfield to the south. a reminder there are few places in the country out of russia's reach. and this is what is left of an industrial site, bombing by the russians after they learned ukrainian forces have been using it as a military base. just an indication of the onslaught facing soldiers and civilian as long the front line. civilian along the front line. exhausted front line soldiers return to base after weeks of fighting in the donbas region, well aware there is more to come. the first sunday after orthodox easter here, is like a memorial day to honor fallen soldiers of the past. but with the war raging on and the death toll climbing, the path is all too present. >> duncan: charlie d'agata joins me from eastern ukraine. what can those civilians expect who have now arrived to safety. >> reporter: the evacuees are headed to zaporizhzhia, the biggest ukrainian held city in that area. around 140 miles northwest of mariupol, there they will receive humanitarian support including psychological services. we visited an aid center, a shopping mall there just this week. the aid workers told us those coming up from mariupol were suffering terribly. hundreds more remain trapped. jericka. >> duncan: charlie d'agata and our cbs news crew, as always, thank you for your reporting. this week congress faces new pressure to approve president biden's latest request for billions more in ukraine war aid. cbs' natalie brand is at the white house, good evening to you, a major event, really for the speaker to visit there, another sign of support. >> reporter: that is right, jericka, speaker pelosi and members who traveled with her are now in poland. we've learned they had a phone call today with president biden and relayed what they heard in ukraine about the need for weapons and intelligence. >> we stand with ukraine until victory is won. >> reporter: speaker pelosi and other top democrats say they left ukraine with a better understanding of the needs on the ground. their visit which was kept secret comes as congress is now crafting legislation for president biden's $33 billion funding request for ukraine, money for economic, humanitarian and defense aid. >> reporter: that $33 billion is significantly less than what we would have to spend if we took russia on directly. so, i hope we don't have any impediments to that all that we can do to help the ukrainians fight for themselves and achieve their freedom is critical because what we don't want is putin ultimately to think that not only can he win in ukraine but advance beyond it. >> reporter: while there is bipartisan support behind this latest round of urgent assistance, the question remains how quickly it can get passed, especially if it's linked to the president's request for additional coronavirus funding which has stalled in a clash over immigration policy. >> we need covid aid, we need ukraine aid, we should do them together or separately but we shouldn't wait around. >> and we will do all of it, whether we do it together which is my preference, we'll see. but it will not bog down. >> duncan: natalie brand joins us now, you know this aid is expected to get ukraine to september but what's the time line on passing this? >> reporter: well, jericka, the house is not in session in d.c. this coming week. so we know that democratic leaders are trying to get this doe as quickly as possible, this month ahead of the memorial day recess. but again, the exact time line remains to be seen. we also know that president we also know that president biden will be traveling to alabama on tuesday to visit a lockheed martin facilities that manufactures javelin antitank missile, one of the key weapons systems the u.s. has been providing to ukraine,. >> duncan: thank you, covid-19 cases are rising once again with limited impact though. more than half a dozen states have seen reports of new infections double in the past two weeks. hospitalizations are up 15 percent in the same period. but vaccines have met far fewer severe cases, today in china the country's latest outbreak prompted a tightening of restrictions in beijing, here's cbs' elizabeth palmer. >> shanghai's health authorities say more than half the population is no longer under lockdown but you would never know it. in practice most people are still not allowed to leave their compounds. though there has been a big push to get essential workers back on the job. among them agricultural staff on shanghai's outskirts. farmers getting back to their crops is one thing, factory workers is quite another. some of them have gone back to restarted plants but this video shows under a so called closed loop system where workers have to literally sleep on the job. china's lockdowns are causing labor shortages and brocken labor shortages and broken supply lines. and u.s. companies are warning they're likely to cost billions of dollars. that is why the covid s.u.v.'s windshield. she was arrested and could face up to 14 years behind bars. >> well, switching gears to nashville tonight. the life of country music great naomi judd will be honored at the the "cbs weekend news" from new york, with jericka duncan. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> duncan: good evening and thanks for joining us on this sunday. speaker of the house nancy pelosi lead a secret congressional trip to kyiv. the meeting was revealed today. pelosi is the highest ranking american lawmaker to visit ukraine and volodymyr zelenskyy since russia's invasion more than two months ago. also today with the war's casualties mounting, ukrainians visited cemeteries across the country, observing the orthodox christian day of the dead. but there were some glimmers of hope for some civilians sheltered at a steel plant in mariupol. cbs' charlie d'agata has more tonight. >> reporter: good evening, we got confirmation today in a president zelenskyy tweet that the evacuation of civilians at the steel works plant had begun. he said do far around a hundred people had been evacuated. they are working on the evacuation of many more in the coming days. the first few residents to escape from beneath the steel plant of mariupol described the hell they endured for weeks. >> ( translated ): when the shells started landing i thought my heart would stop. and i would not survive. >> reporter: they're now headed to the relative safety of ukrainian held territory. even though the u.n. said it had brokered a deal with the russians and red cross, the first successful evacuation after so many failed attempts still came as something of a surprise. as did this: house speaker nancy pelosi greeted by president zelenskyy on the streets of kyiv along with six other democrats, a show of support to discuss america's additional $33 billion u.s. aid package to you crane. package to ukraine. >> we are here to say thank you for your fight to freedom and your fight is a fight for everyone. and so, our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done. >> reporter: but winning seems a long way off. the russian military releasing this video they say shows their high precision missile attack on odesa's military airfield to the south. a reminder there are few places in the country out of russia's reach. and this is what is left of an industrial site, bombing by the russians after they learned ukrainian forces have been using it as a military base. just an indication of the onslaught facing soldiers and civilian as long the front line. civilian along the front line. exhausted front line soldiers return to base after weeks of fighting in the donbas region, well aware there is more to come. the first sunday after orthodox easter here, is like a memorial day to honor fallen soldiers of the past. but with the war raging on and the death toll climbing, the path is all too present. >> duncan: charlie d'agata joins me from eastern ukraine. what can those civilians expect who have now arrived to safety. >> reporter: the evacuees are headed to zaporizhzhia, the biggest ukrainian held city in that area. around 140 miles northwest of mariupol, there they will receive humanitarian support including psychological services. we visited an aid center, a shopping mall there just this week. the aid workers told us those coming up from mariupol were suffering terribly. hundreds more remain trapped. jericka. >> duncan: charlie d'agata and our cbs news crew, as always, thank you for your reporting. this week congress faces new pressure to approve president biden's latest request for billions more in ukraine war aid. cbs' natalie brand is at the white house, good evening to you, a major event, really for the speaker to visit there, another sign of support. >> reporter: that is right, jericka, speaker pelosi and members who traveled with her are now in poland. we've learned they had a phone call today with president biden and relayed what they heard in ukraine about the need for weapons and intelligence. >> we stand with ukraine until victory is won. >> reporter: speaker pelosi and other top democrats say they left ukraine with a better understanding of the needs on the ground. their visit which was kept secret comes as congress is now crafting legislation for president biden's $33 billion funding request for ukraine, money for economic, humanitarian and defense aid. >> reporter: that $33 billion is significantly less than what we would have to spend if we took russia on directly. so, i hope we don't have any impediments to that all that we can do to help the ukrainians fight for themselves and achieve their freedom is critical because what we don't want is putin ultimately to think that not only can he win in ukraine but advance beyond it. >> reporter: while there is bipartisan support behind this latest round of urgent assistance, the question remains how quickly it can get passed, especially if it's linked to the president's request for additional coronavirus funding which has stalled in a clash over immigration policy. >> we need covid aid, we need ukraine aid, we should do them together or separately but we shouldn't wait around. >> and we will do all of it, whether we do it together which is my preference, we'll see. but it will not bog down. >> duncan: natalie brand joins us now, you know this aid is expected to get ukraine to september but what's the time line on passing this? >> reporter: well, jericka, the house is not in session in d.c. this coming week. so we know that democratic leaders are trying to get this doe as quickly as possible, this month ahead of the memorial day recess. but again, the exact time line remains to be seen. we also know that president we also know that president biden will be traveling to alabama on tuesday to visit a lockheed martin facilities that manufactures javelin antitank missile, one of the key weapons systems the u.s. has been providing to ukraine,. >> duncan: thank you, covid-19 cases are rising once again with limited impact though. more than half a dozen states have seen reports of new infections double in the past two weeks. hospitalizations are up 15 percent in the same period. but vaccines have met far fewer severe cases, today in china the country's latest outbreak prompted a tightening of restrictions in beijing, here's cbs' elizabeth palmer. >> shanghai's health authorities say more than half the population is no longer under lockdown but you would never know it. in practice most people are still not allowed to leave their compounds. though there has been a big push to get essential workers back on the job. among them agricultural staff on shanghai's outskirts. farmers getting back to their crops is one thing, factory workers is quite another. some of them have gone back to restarted plants but this video shows under a so called closed loop system where workers have to literally sleep on the job. china's lockdowns are causing labor shortages and brocken labor shortages and broken supply lines. and u.s. companies are warning they're likely to cost billions of dollars. that is why the covid outbreak in beijing has caused such alarm. may 1s is a huge holiday but the may 1st is a huge holiday but the capitol is quiet. except for covid testing and testing and testing. 21 million people, multiple times last week and even so, cases are cases are rising. >> when you see this usually crowded city empty, you can't help but wonder how will people make a living. i feel depressed. >> at this, an argument between two women escalated as one deliberately smashed her car into two vehicles, one with an infant in the backseat. well, the same driver then took a baseball bat to the s.u.v.'s windshield. she was arrested and could face up to 14 years behind bars. >> well, switching gears to nashville tonight. the life of country music great naomi judd will be honored at the country music hall of fame ceremony. judd was expected to be there person but died saturday near nashville. she was 76. cbs' lilia luciano reports on judd's successes and struggles. ♪ love can build a
