"we brought some food for the children," says a ukrainian fighter. around 1,000 people are thought to be trapped in a maze of tunnels beneath the huge industrial site. "we want to go home," says this little girl. "we want to see the sun." new satellite images appear to show fresh grave sites, as the mayor said 20,000 civilians may have died so far. russia's reach struck odessa today, ukrainian officials say, firing at least six cruise missiles into the black sea port city. this attack comes as a russian commander revealed that moscow's planning to establish a land bridge across southern ukraine to transanistra, a breakaway republic in eastern moldova. "this only confirms what i've said many times," president volodymyr zelenskyy said. "the russian invasion of ukrain. they wan was only the beginning. they want to capture other countries." russian forces have intensified attacks along a 300-mile front line in eastern ukraine. city of kharkiv, in the city of kharkiv, we found widespread destruction everywhere, and families who have been taking shelter deep underground in subway stations for months. sofia celebrated her 75th birthday in this subway train last month. a subway train is no place to call home. "definitely not," she said. "it doesn't feel like home. but here, you can't hear the shooting. i'm so scared." too scared to go home, if there's even a home left to to. go to. >> diaz: charlie d'agata joins us now. charlie, as you reported, russian strikes targeted odessa today. why is that city so strategic? >> reporter: well, first of all, adriana, ukrainian officials say that six civilians were killed in one of those missile strikes, including a three-month-old baby. it's a strategic port city because it sits between mariupol and moldova, and if it's russia's intent to establish a land bridge between those two areas, that would include taking over odessa itself. >> diaz: charlie d'agata and our cbs news crew, thank you. house republican leader kevin mccarthy is scrambling to contain the fallout from a leaked tape and what he said about former president trump following the insurrection at the capitol. cbs' robert costa joins us in washington with new details. bob, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. house minority leader kevin mccarthy says he and trump have spoken several times since the story broke, but the fallout continues here in washington. >> i've never asked the president to resign. i never thought he should resign. >> reporter: the house republican leader remains on the defensive, denying that he urged the former president to resign, after newly surfaced audio revealed he thought about doing just that. >> it would be my recommendation he should resign. that would be my take, but i don't think he would take it. >> reporter: this following a week where republicans were on edge over recorded phone calls revealing mccarthy telling colleagues, "in the aftermath of a capitol insurrection, that former president trump acknowledged bearing some blame for it." >> he told me he does have some responsibility for what happened. >> reporter: the suddenly unveiling of private republican tensions comes after the authors of a new book, "this will not pass," released a series of clips exposing . ernal discussions. >> i've had it with this guy. >> reporter: before the audio was released, mccarthy denied telling people he had suggested resignation, but once the audio began to seemingly play on a loop in washington, mccarthy faced new questions over the truth and whether trump would break from the man who has a shot at being the next house speaker. trump, who holds a rally tonight in ohio, told the "wall street journal" on friday that mccarthy remains an ally, and said he never claimed responsibility. still, mccarthy faces mounting questions from the house select committee. >> diaz: bob, all of this comes as the january 6 committee released new details on another key player, former white house chief of staff mark meadows. what are you learning? >> reporter: that's right. on friday, the house committee investigating the events of january 6, said in a court filing that meadows was warned of possible violence ahead of the capitol attack. and the committee continues to seek his testimony. adriana. >> diaz: robert costa, thank you. today in ohio, a military court near dayton handed down a historic conviction. u.s. air force major general william t. cooley was found guilty of abusive sexual contact involving his sister-in-law. it's the first court-martial and conviction of a general in air force history. to severe weather, now. powering a snowstorm and wind- driven wildfires this weekend. flames are roaring through several states, including six where the threat is extreme. lilia luciano joins us now in los angeles with more. lilia. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. since january, more than 800,000 acres have burned across the nation in wildfires. and right now, currently, there's more than 2,000 fire officials fighting flames. wildfires are raging across parts of the southwest, scorching more than 100,000 acres, destroying dozens of homes, and forcing hundreds to evacuate. uncontrolled flames, spurred on by a mega-drought and ferocious winds further spreading the fires. >> the fire was so hot, it broke all the windows on the back of our house. >> reporter: sporadic snow and rain had little effect dousing the tunnel fire near flagstaff, arizona, now in its sixth day, with only 3% containment. another two fires merged outside santa fe, new mexico, with at least four additional fires burning in that state. the same weather system that triggered red flag warnings in the southwest is creating blizzard conditions in the upper rockies and plains, and parts of the central u.s. could get hit by strong storms pking high winds, hail, and even tornadoes. meanwhile, in northern california, a separate system has brought spring snow to the sierra nevada, giving some relief to the drought-stricken state. >> i think it's important, right. it's going to be good for the drought. >> reporter: scientists say these late-april rains in california are barely making a dent in delaying our fire season-- the state is still heading into the summer with the driest january, february, and march on record. adriana, we're talking about more than 170 years. >> diaz: wow, lilia luciano, thank you. to florida now, where an orlando officer today is being hailed as a hero. the deputy climbed the balconies of a building to reach a woman on the third floor, who safely handed a baby over with a fire raging just behind her. there are no reports of serious injuries. in washington, d.c., police today said the gunman who wounded four people friday, including a child, fired more than 100 rounds from a rifle. the suspect appeared to fire randomly from an apartment, with a sniper-like setup. he was later found dead there. now to the pandemic. america's race back to normal has hit yet another speed bump, with new rises in covid cases. they're up 52% in the lastt two weeks. two weeks. cbs' michael george joins us now as changing mask rules causes mass confusion. michael. >> reporter: adriana, good evening. laguardia's one of the few airports left where masks are still required in the terminal, but not onboard the plane. it's just one example of how confusing mask rules have become and how quickly they change. in philadelphia, mask signs are coming down again. in the span of just four days, the city went from masks being optional indoors to mandatory, then back to optional. >> we put our masks on, but then once we walked in, nobody had them on. so it's just-- it's hard to know what's going on. >> reporter: a federal judge overturned the mask mandate for planes and mass transit this week, but with covid cases rising in 36 states, some areas, including los angeles county, are re-instituting mask requirements. >> do you have one, or do you need one? >> no, i have one. >> could you wear it for me, please? >> reporter: it's getting tough for people to keep track. >> i just wish we had a clear answer on what, you know, we're going to do with the whole mask mandate. >> this is a time not to be reckless and to wear masks indoors, check up on your vaccination status. >> reporter: several major airlines say they may reinstater airlines thousands of passengers who were thousands of banned from flying for refusing to wear masks. however, the airlines indicated, passengers who became violent or disruptive may not be reinstated. meanwhile, the justice department is appealing to restore the mask mandate. the c.d.c. says it remains necessary for the public health. adriana. >> diaz: michael george, thank you. to france now, where the country's presidential election tomorrow could have sweeping global ramifications. today, expats turned out to cast their ballots at the french embassy in washington, d.c. cbs' elaine cobbe is in paris with the latest. >> reporter: president emmanuel macron has widened his lead over his far-right challenger, marine le pen, but she's hoping a low turnout could tip the balance in her favor. that has france's allies, including the u.s., worried. macron raised the issue of le pen's ties to russia's vladimir putin in the candidate's debate this week. ( speaking french ) "you are dependent on russia. you're dependent on putin," he said, referring to her party's loan from a russian bank. she denied the charge, saying "i am a totally free woman." le pen has also said she wants to rethink relations with the u.s. >> the biden administration, considering its program, its agenda, would not be quite-- not be happy to work with marine le pen on redrafting the relationship with france. >> reporter: in the gritty parisian suburb of saint-denis, voters we spoke to were divided on who to choose, but united in their disappointment with macron and their mistrust of le pen, whose anti-muslim, anti-immigration policies worry them. farida says she'll vote for macron. ( speaking french ) she says le pen is racist and wants to make wearing a muslim head scarf in public illegal. ( speaking french ) mehdi says young french people don't understand how extreme le pen's politics really are. he's tempted to vote for her, just so they see her in action. almost 30% of voters say they're still not sure if they'll even cast a ballot. if enough of them stay home, the race could be far tighter than final polls suggest. elaine cobbe, cbs news, paris. >> diaz: straight ahead on the "cbs weekend news," the latest threats to our once-near-extinct national symbol. and later, the category is estate sale. the question: why are these people standing in line? need a hint? think "jeopardy!" y!" like to hik. we eat healthy. we exercise. i noticed i wasn't as sharp as i used to be. my wife introduced me to prevagen and so i said "yeah, i'll try it out." i noticed that i felt sharper, i felt like i was able to respond to things quicker. and i thought, yeah, it works for me. prevagen. healthier brain. better life. this is the story of two homes. they both have bugs, but only one has zevo. ( laughs ) easure. >> this is the "cbs weekend news" from chicago with adriana diaz. >> diaz: good evening. today, ukraine's president said that the u.s. secretary of state, antony blinken, and the defense secretary, lloyd austin, would visit the country's embattled capital, kyiv, tomorrow, orthodox easter sunday. so far, there's no comment or confirmation from the state department or the pentagon. volodymyr zelenskyy spoke at a defiant news conference, where he said the visit was not "a big secret." also today, russian forces launched deadly missile strikes on odessa, hitting a residential neighborhood. the russians also took aim at targets in the besieged city of mariupol. cbs' charlie d'agata has the latest tonight from vinnytsia. >> reporter: good evening. normally tonight, people in ukraine would be getting ready to celebrate orthodox easter tomorrow. but no one is in the mood to celebrate. those who aren't fighting for their lives, will be praying for those who are. instead of a temporary cease- fire to evacuate civilians, liann ukrainian officials accused russian troops of trying to storm the steel works where fighters and families are taking shelter. new video released by the azov regiment of the ukraine national guard, is alleged to show women and children holed up in the bunker beneath the plant for up to two months. the video, reportedly taken two days ago, cannot be independently verified.
