armed demonstrators gather outside the courtroom. two americans freed from haiti. new details on the hostages' ordeal. and what about the 15 other missionaries still being held by a gang? covid cases surge in the u.s. up nearly 50%. and while disney paused itsempl. thanksgiving holiday travel, three days until your big feast, the long lines at the airport, and we go for a run with girls on the run. the empowering program for young girls at just the right age. >> you guys are fast! this is the "cbs evening news" with norah o'donnell, reporting from the nation's capital. >> o'donnell: good evening, and thank you for joining us. we're going to begin tonight in waukesha, wisnso knit community that is reeling in grief following an horrific attack at its annual christmas parade. there is a vigil held tonight in this milwaukee suburb for the victims of the rampage. families and community leaders struggling to make sense of what happened. five people were killed and nearly 50 others injured when a man plowed his suv through a barricade and drove along the christmas parade route. in a few terrifying moments, this joyous event shockingly transformed into chaos. the dead range in age from 52 to 81 years old and include four members of milwaukee's dancing grannies. many children are among the wounded and several tonight fighting for their lives. we also learned today the driver now facing intentional homicide charges was out on bond after he allegedly punched the mother of his child and intentionally ran her over with the same vehicle at a milwaukee gas station earlier this mon. we have team coverage of the tragedy beginning with cbs's rter: od evening. this is mean street where last night families gather to celebrate the holiday season. now as we learn more about this tragedy, we're learning that this close knit city is coming together to remember the lives lost. injured as young as three years old. families celebrating the holidays watched in horror. >> when i looked over, i saw one person on the ground, their feet and they were surround bid a bunch of identified as the suspect and police say hebao evidenceer>> in thedeaon boks >> reporter: on social media, brooks who lives in milwaukee can be seen rapping next to a red suv. brooks criminal history dates back to 1999. last year he was charged with three felony gun counts. according to court documents in a domestic abuse incident brooks intentionally ran over his child's mother with his vehicle. brooks posted a $1,000 bail on november 11. the milwaukee d.a. called the bail inappropriately low today. president biden said he and his family are praying for the suffering. >> an entire community is struggling to cope with the horrific act of violence. >> now the community is trying to heal after horror came to this year's holiday parade. its theme, comfort and joy. waukesha mayor described the 70,000 as a close community. >> waukesha has held as what can be described as a norman rockwell christmas parade for decades. last night the waukesha parade became the scene of an horrific tragedy, a nightmare. >> reporter: a police chief fired shots at the vehicle to stop it avenue it went through the barricades. no one was hit by the shots. brooks, who faces five counts of first degree intentional homicide will make his first court appearance tomorrow, norah. >> o'donnell: nancy chen, thank you. this parade was an annual tradition in wkesha, in fact, the 158th christmas parade. just as family and friends were spreading holiday cheer, tragedy struck. more now from cbs's david begnaud. >> the oldest victim wilhelm hospel was 81. jane kulich and tamara durand were 52. virginia sorenson and leanna owen were in their 70s. ♪♪ four were members to have the beloved local group known as the dancing grannies. this summer they told our milwaukee affiliates cbs 58 how much the group meant to them. >> we all truly, i think, love each other, too. we're like sisters. >> reporter: sorenson was described as the leader of the night-knit dancing family. >> she's like the heart and soul, honest to god. >> reporter: at least 48 pple were wounded. injuries ranged from scraped faces to serious head wounds and broken bones. among the injured are at least 18 children who were taken to the hospital. six are in critical condition tonight in the i.c.u., including 11-year-old jessa lynn torres seen dancing in the parade. still in the i.c.u. according to her uncle. also three sets ofsiblins, young kids, all hurt. denstrates the devastating effects of this on our community. >> reporter: the christmas parade was put on hold last year due to covid so this was supposed to be a night of pure joy. >> we have so much healing that needs to occur. waukesha will not be defined by the horrific events of last night. with ewill help those -- who experience a loss of a loved one or were injured. >> reporter: tonight, we're just want two blocks away from the crime scene at this local park where they're having a vigil, and i guess there are probably about 500 or 600 people here right now. the first thing we noticed when we walked up was that at every corner around us there's a snow plow or dump truck or bus that has been put up to basically protect the vigil site. i asked the officers why and they said because we want to stop another driver from trying to drive into this crowd. >> o'donnell: fear is still so real, david, thank you. to brunswick, georgia where a jury is to deliver a verdict in the ahmaud arbery murder trial. three men are accused of calculationing down and murdering arbery in what the defense claims is a citizens arrest. demonstrators showed up to support the arbery family. omar villafranca has more on today's closing arguments. >> reporter: ahmaud arbery's mother we want as she walked into is it courthouse, one step closer to closure, as closing arguments began in the trial of the man accused of murdering her son. >> all three men made assumptions about what was going on that day and made their decision to attack ahmaud arbery in their driveways because he was a blackman running down the street. >> prosecutor linda dunikoski tod the state's side to have the story that the three men charged with murder could not have made a citizens arrest because arbery could is not have committed a crime. she also added while chaisessing arbery through the neighborhood and confronting him with a shotgun, it was travis mcmichael who pulled the trigger and committed the felony. >> reporter: imagine the man with the shotgun saying he was defending himself. >> the defense attorneys argued they were just defending themselves when they tried to detain arbery. >> trais, trying to yank this gun from mr. arbery, ahmaud's hands still on it, fist raising, is there in i question that ahmaud arbery is assaulting travi mcmichael? chsahe dn't pullneys for greg the trigger and it was arbery's actions that led to the confrontation. roddy bryan's lawyers say he didn't know what was happening or that mcmichael had a weapon. the armed demonstrators gather outside the courtroom. two americans freed from haiti. new details on the hostages' ordeal. and what about the 15 other missionaries still being held by a gang? covid cases surge in the u.s. up nearly 50%. and while disney paused itsempl. thanksgiving holiday travel, three days until your big feast, the long lines at the airport, and we go for a run with girls on the run. the empowering program for young girls at just the right age. >> you guys are fast! this is the "cbs evening news" with norah o'donnell, reporting from the nation's capital. >> o'donnell: good evening, and thank you for joining us. we're going to begin tonight in waukesha, wisnso knit community that is reeling in grief following an horrific attack at its annual christmas parade. there is a vigil held tonight in this milwaukee suburb for the victims of the rampage. families and community leaders struggling to make sense of what happened. five people were killed and nearly 50 others injured when a man plowed his suv through a barricade and drove along the christmas parade route. in a few terrifying moments, this joyous event shockingly transformed into chaos. the dead range in age from 52 to 81 years old and include four members of milwaukee's dancing grannies. many children are among the wounded and several tonight fighting for their lives. we also learned today the driver now facing intentional homicide charges was out on bond after he allegedly punched the mother of his child and intentionally ran her over with the same vehicle at a milwaukee gas station earlier this mon. we have team coverage of the tragedy beginning with cbs's rter: od evening. this is mean street where last night families gather to celebrate the holiday season. now as we learn more about this tragedy, we're learning that this close knit city is coming together to remember the lives lost. ( screaming ) joy quickly turned into chaos. tonight officers say is it suspect was fleeing a domestic disturbance when he plowed through police barricades. this was the moment the suv owraro lving say this with great sorrow. virginia sorenson, 79-year-old female. >> : leanna owen, 71-ye71-year-old female. >> reporter: the incident left five dead ranging 52 to 81, and 40 injured, nearly half injured as young as three years old. families celebrating the holidays watched in horror. >> when i looked over, i saw one person on the ground, their feet and they were surround bid a bunch of people. >> reporter: matt was at the ray paid with his two young children. >> when i walked past i fold my girls to close their eyes and look the other way. >> reporter: 39-year-old darrell brooks is identified as the suspect and police say hebao evidenceer>> in thedeaon boks >> reporter: on social media, brooks who lives in milwaukee can be seen rapping next to a red suv. brooks criminal history dates back to 1999. last year he was charged with three felony gun counts. according to court documents in a domestic abuse incident brooks intentionally ran over his child's mother with his vehicle. brooks posted a $1,000 bail on november 11. the milwaukee d.a. called the bail inappropriately low today. president biden said he and his family are praying for the suffering. >> an entire community is struggling to cope with the horrific act of violence. >> now the community is trying to heal after horror came to this year's holiday parade. its theme, comfort and joy. waukesha mayor described the 70,000 as a close community. >> waukesha has held as what can be described as a norman rockwell christmas parade for decades. last night the waukesha parade became the scene of an horrific tragedy, a nightmare. >> reporter: a police chief fired shots at the vehicle to stop it avenue it went through the barricades. no one was hit by the shots. brooks, who faces five counts of first degree intentional homicide will make his first court appearance tomorrow, norah. >> o'donnell: nancy chen, thank you. this parade was an annual tradition in wkesha, in fact, the 158th christmas parade. just as family and friends were spreading holiday cheer, tragedy struck. more now from cbs's david begnaud. >> the oldest victim wilhelm hospel was 81. jane kulich and tamara durand were 52. virginia sorenson and leanna owen were in their 70s. ♪♪ four were members to have the beloved local group known as the dancing grannies. this summer they told our milwaukee affiliates cbs 58 how much the group meant to them. >> we all truly, i think, love each other, too. we're like sisters. >> reporter: sorenson was described as the leader of the night-knit dancing family. >> she's like the heart and soul, honest to god. >> reporter: at least 48 pple were wounded. injuries ranged from scraped faces to serious head wounds and broken bones. among the injured are at least 18 children who were taken to the hospital. six are in critical condition tonight in the i.c.u., including 11-year-old jessa lynn torres seen dancing in the parade. still in the i.c.u. according to her uncle. also three sets ofsiblins, young kids, all hurt. denstrates the devastating effects of this on our community. >> reporter: the christmas parade was put on hold last year due to covid so this was supposed to be a night of pure joy. >> we have so much healing that needs to occur. waukesha will not be defined by the horrific events of last night. with ewill help those -- who experience a loss of a loved one or were injured. >> reporter: tonight, we're just want two blocks away from the crime scene at this local park where they're having a vigil, and i guess there are probably about 500 or 600 people here right now. the first thing we noticed when we walked up was that at every corner around us there's a snow plow or dump truck or bus that has been put up to basically protect the vigil site. i asked the officers why and they said because we want to stop another driver from trying to drive into this crowd. >> o'donnell: fear is still so real, david, thank you. to brunswick, georgia where a jury is to deliver a verdict in the ahmaud arbery murder trial. three men are accused of calculationing down and murdering arbery in what the defense claims is a citizens arrest. demonstrators showed up to support the arbery family. omar villafranca has more on today's closing arguments. >> reporter: ahmaud arbery's mother we want as she walked into is it courthouse, one step closer to closure, as closing arguments began in the trial of the man accused of murdering her son. >> all three men made assumptions about what was going on that day and made their decision to attack ahmaud arbery in their driveways because he was a blackman running down the street. >> prosecutor linda dunikoski tod the state's side to have the story that the three men charged with murder could not have made a citizens arrest because arbery could is not have committed a crime. she also added while chaisessing arbery through the neighborhood and confronting him with a shotgun, it was travis mcmichael who pulled the trigger and committed the felony. >> reporter: imagine the man with the shotgun saying he was defending himself. >> the defense attorneys argued they were just defending themselves when they tried to detain arbery. >> trais, trying to yank this gun from mr. arbery, ahmaud's hands still on it, fist raising, is there in i question that ahmaud arbery is assaulting travi mcmichael? chsahe dn't pullneys for greg the trigger and it was arbery's actions that led to the confrontation. roddy bryan's lawyers say he didn't know what was happening or that mcmichael had a weapon. the
