The last Borscht Belt comedians. Out speak up, be offended enough people should car to speak 9out speak up, be offended enough to make an issue out of it. Duncan and later, how american g. I. S changed the way the japanese ride the waves. This is the Cbs Weekend News with Jericka Duncan, reporting from the new york. Duncan good evening, thanks for watching. Americas Covid Recovery is being threatened by a summer surge. Hospitalizations and deaths are up nationwide. The highly contagious Delta Variant is giving new urgency to the Countrys Vaccination Push but thats actually lacking. Seven months after the first shots only 49 percent of americans are fully vaccinated. We begin tonight with Cbs Lilia Luciano in pasadena, california, lilia, good evening to you. Reporter good evening, jericka. That national Vaccination Rate is nowhere near enough to stop the spread of the Delta Variant and now Health Officials are bracing for an even bigger spike in infections. Tonight, there are new fears of another covid surge in southernt spreading. L. A. And San Diego counties are reporting their highest number of cases since february. How worried are you about the threat of the Delta Variant at this point . Im terrified. Reporter nationally new covid cases have spiked almost 50 with increases in all 50 states and 90 of u. S. Jurisdictions, Quinten Lucas is the mayor of kansas city, missouri. I think every mayor of a major city in america is wondering if its a time to return to mandates. Reporter florida is the nations worst hot spot, accounting for more than one in five of all new cases. That didnt matter at miamis rolling loud Music Festival where thousands of people crammed together in california protestors rallied against Vaccine Requirements at this restaurant. There say renewed push nationwide to reach vaccine holdouts now worried about the Delta Variant. I just dont want to take it, but because of the second virus coming, im kind of scared so that is why i am here. Reporter now Health Officials are considering another round of shots. It is easier for this Delta Variant to overwhelm low Antibody Levels that is why we are considering whether or not some people might need boosters. Reporter and dr. Gottlieb also says that pfizer expects to have a milder dose of its vaccine for children between the ages of 5 and 11 available in september. Jericka. Duncan lilia luciano, thank you. Lets turn to Cbs News medical Contributor Dr. David agus in los angeles. Dr. Agus, you know there has been a lot of discussion about Booster Shots. When might you see that happening for people especially 65 and older . So, in israel they started doing them in people immune suppressed without a normal immune system. I think we will see those Booster Shots here in the united states, i hope soon. In terms of people 65 and older i would imagine the fda approved those Booster Shots by The End The End of september. And that kind of time frame makes sense. Duncan dr. Agus, we also have been hearing the Word Breakthrough cases, how concerned should we be about those Breakthrough Cases in which people have been fully vaccinated but yet there is still getting infected with covid. Right now people exposed to Delta Variant who have been fully vaccinated, most of them will have no symptoms. Some will have mild symptoms, very few if any will have serious illness causing hospitalization, so that is good. The vaccine is clearly working in terms of blocking serious illness. And that is what we care about at the present time. The problem is half our Country Isnt yet vaccinated. Duncan and when you talk about half of our country not being vaccinated, we also know there is a tale of mask or unmasked whether certain states or businesses have different rules. What should people be doing right now at this moment whether they are vaccinated or not . It really depends on where you live. If the Case Numbers are going up, like they are in many places in the country, i do believe were going to have to wear masks now when we go indoors or were with people. We cant validate or document who has been vaccinated versus not. So you may be at risk of catching and spreading the virus in those situations. Duncan and theres also a new model out that suggests we havent seen the worse of this surge, the peak of this surge and that wont happen until october. What is your prediction . I can tell you, every Model Today has been inaccurate when trying to predict the future. Part of it is it assumes that behavior dont change. I think behavior is and is starting to change as ro the country. More and more places are going back toward masks and changing behavior. And i do think we will see the peek toward The End of august and many more havieesed the vil have immunity across the country and hopefully decreasing numbers through september, until or unless there is a new variant. Duncan all right, dr. David agus, thank you. The surge is also casting a shadow over the olympics. But team u. S. A. Did win its first Gold Today in the pool by in the mens 400 meter individual medley. So far the u. S. Has ten medals second to china, and the u. S. Mens Basketball Team is looking for a fresh start after losing to france. Cbs Jamie Yuccas is at the games and shows us the competition isnt the only thing that has been a challenge. Reporter these are an olympics like no other. Right now were in a type of modified quarantine the first 14 days which means we can leave to go to work but first we have to fill out this Health Questionnaire on our phones. We are also allowed it go around the corner from the hotel to a Convenience Store but you better shop fast, you have to be back in 15 minutes. When headed to work, the crew then takes a van to the medical then takes a van to the Media Center which is a preapproved workspace. Once inside journalists can conduct Interviews Shop for souvenirs, supply, eat and every few days we must drop off a covid case. As Media Members were also allowed to attend events as long as we are preapproved since organizers are trying to limit the amount of people inside venues. Then our day ends here at our live Shot Location which overlooks tokyos beautiful rainbow bridge. The hours are backyards from the united states so our Morning Broadcast Air in the evening, the Evenings Air in the morning. Once were all done we pack up, head back to the hotel, get a little bit of rest and do it all again the next day. Jericka. Duncan Jamie Yuccas, giving us a Behind The Scenes look from tokyo, thank you. Extreme weather this weekend triggered national disasters overseas. In belgium Heavy Rains washed away cars as water rushed through the streets there. And in india Heavy Rain is blamed for triggering this rock slide. At least nine people were killed when their bus was struck by boulders. And this county, more than 80 wildfires are now raging in the west. No Northern California the massive Dixie Fire is turning trees into torches. The Out Of Control flames are prompting evacuations. The fire threatens thousands of structures and destroyed anything in its path. In washington this week the House Committee will begin investigating the deadly January Assault on the capitol. Cbs Christina Ruffini joins us now for more on that and also a second republican appointment. Christina, good evening. Reporter good evening, jericka. Adam kinzinger has been consistently critical of President Trump and his Partys Position on the January 6 riot. Will join Liz Cheney who lost her job in republican House Leadership for taking a similar stance. This committee, in order to retain the confidence of the american people must act in a way that has no partisanship. Reporter but the makeup of the investigating committee has already become a part i san issue. Weshould be candid about the fact that it st politically to the advantage of democrats to try to keep this issue in the forefront. Reporter Today Speaker of the House Nancy pelosi appointed a second republican, illinois Adam Kinzinger after refusing two of the five gop members put forward by Minority Leader kevin mccarthy. Maybe the republicans cant handle the truth. But we have a responsibility to seek it. Reporter the rejected members, Jim Jordan and jim banks, voted against certifying the 2020 election results. She doesnt want us to ask these questions because at The End of the day, she is ultimately responsible for the preakdown of security at the breakdown of security at the capitol. Then there is a stalled bipartisan effort on, what else, infrastructure. Were optimistic. Stay tuned. Were down to the last couple of items. Democrats want more of the democrats want more of the 1 Trillion Billion to go towards mass transit. Republicans say they have been generous enough. That is the one issue that is outstanding frankly at this point. My hope is we will see progress on that yet today. Now jericka, i hope we hear this before but senators say they could have an agreement as soon as this week. Well see, christina, what happens to those other three republicans that have been nominated for the committee . Ness with well, Minority Leader mccarthy issued a statement in which he said Speaker Pelosi has destroyed committees credibility. He said republicans will be focused on making sure what he refers to as quote the Leadership Failures of January 6th never happens again. So it doesnt sound like they will be joining their two gop colleagues. Duncan also, Christina Ruffini covering it all, thank you.
