the city boarded up as jury selection is society to begin in one of the most high profile trials in years. the pope speaks out at a one time isis stronghold, remembering the horror and praying for peace. and later, harry, meghan, and oprah. their long awaited interview. >> were you silent or were you silenced? >> this is the "cbs weekend news." from new york here is jericka duncan. >> duncan: good evening, we begin tonight with new york's governor andrew cuomo facing more allegations of inappropriate behavior by former aides. two top new york state democrats are now calling for his resignation as two additional women accuse the governor of inappropriate touching and language. that brings the number of women who have come forward to five, and two male aides reportedly accuse mr. cuomo of routinely berating them, creating a toxic workplace. meanwhile cuomo says there is no way he is resigning. cbs's nancy chen has the details. >> reporter: on a conference call today, new york governor andrew cuomo said he is not going anywhere. >> i was elected by the people of the state. i am not going to resign because of allegations. >> those allegations are coming from five women, four of whom are former staffers, who accuse governor cuomo of inappropriate behavior. according to the "washington post", karen hinton claims mr. cuomo currently summoned her to his dimly lit hotel room in 2000 when he was a cabinet secretary. >> hinton, a former top cuomo aide told a local new york station, she could feel he was sexually aroused. >> it was not just a hug. it was an intimate embrace. governor cuomo today denied accusation accusations calling hear long time political adversary. >> every woman has a right to come forward, but the truth also matters. what he is said is not true. >> another former staffer ana liss told the "wall street journal", cuomo asked if she had a boyfriend, touched her lower back and kissed her hand. mr. cuomo said it was nothing more than friendly banter about her dating life and he never meant to make anyone feel uncomfortable. cuomo's former executive assistant charlotte bennett spoke with nora o'donnell last thursday, detailing multiple instances in which the governor allegedly made inappropriate comments. >> the governor is trying to sleep with me. and i'm deeply uncomfortable, and i have to get out of this room as soon as possible. >> reporter: mr. cuomo addressed her claims today. >> i was never aware at the time that ms. bennett felt uncomfortable at any time when we were working together. >> reporter: but bennett's lawyer has already dismissed his claim, saying she has complained to her supervisor as well as a special counsel to the governor at the time of the incident. the accusations are being investigated by the office of the new york attorney general, new york senator chuck schumer >> and i believe she will make sure there is no outside interference, political or otherwise. >> reporter: the push for governor cuomo's resignation continues to grow. the editorial board of the "albany times union" is calling for the governor to step down, saying, "mr. cuomo has squandered the public's trust at a time when it's needed more than ever." and one of those new york state democrats calling for cuomo to step down says, amid a pandemic they need to govern without daily distraction. jericka. >> duncan: nancy chen for us in new york tonight, thank you. new reported covid infections fell saturday and recorded deaths were their lowest in a month. as cbs' lilia luciano reports, there are signs of hope, but health experts say now is not the time for people to let down their guard. >> reporter: l.a. giving thousands of vaccinations today and expecting more than 300,000 doses to be delivered this week, the majority for first shots. covid has now killed more than 22,000 people in l.a. county, but a bright spot, hospializations have dropped by 72% in a month. still, nationwide, there are fears of another surge. the variants are spreading and new infections aren't dropping fast enough. >> plateauing at a level of 60,000 to 70,000 new cases per day is not an acceptable level. >> reporter: new concerns tonight after a street party in boulder, colorado, raged out of control. police say up to 800 people gathered with some clashing with authorities trying to break up the crowd. >> people are like trashing houses and flipping cars. >> hurry up before the man comes. >> reporter: in idaho mask burning at the state capitol. >> destroy them! >> reporter: it is one of 16 states that by this wednesday will be without a mask mandate. georgia is another. in atlanta despite official warnings, crowds poured in ahead of this week's nba all-star game. the push is on to get more shots into arms, just 9% of americans have been fully vaccinated, with hard hit minority communities getting less access. >> all done. >> reporter: california is working to meet its goal of vaccinating 2 million of its lowest income residents before loosening any restrictions. >> it will make my life a lot better, a lot more comfortable. >> reporter: vaccinations, mask wearing and social distancing are moving california in the right direction, but health officials here are urging people to avoid traveling for spring break. jericka. >> duncan: lilia luciano for us in santa monica, thank you. president biden's covid relief bill, his top priority since entering office is one step closer to passage. if the house passes the revived senate bill it could go to mr. biden's desk early this week. as christina ruffini reports, it has been a tough political battle. >> it obviously wasn't easy, it wasn't always pretty, but it was rteillirately needed. bill is aimed at bringing relief to struggling americans, but it is also a big relief for president biden. ( applause ) the first major legislation of his presidency, it faced opposition from republicans, who said it was too expensive. >> this was a liberal wish list of liberal spending just basically filled with pork. it didn't need to be this way. >> reporter: and disappointed some democrats who said it didn't go far enough. >> we are going to continue our campaign to get the minimum wage up to $15 nationally. >> reporter: then there was west virginia democrat joe manchin. >> all i did was try to make sure we were targeting where the help was needed. >> reporter: because of his party's razor-thin majority he was able to hold up the bill until leaders agreed to lower the weekly unemployment benefits and provided its recipients a tax break. the legislation passed, eventually, without a single republican vote. >> the end result is essentially about the same, and so, i don't think any of the compromises in any way fundamentally altered the essence of what i put in the bill in the first place. >> reporter: president biden had wanted the bill to be bipartisan but of the major covid relief bills passed during the pandemic, this was the first without any g.o.p. support. >> there are already there are a lot of republicans that came very close, and got a lot of pressure on them and i still haven't given up on getting their support. >> reporter: that bill will now head back to the house where progressive democrats could oppose some of those changes made by their senate colleagues, but majority whip jim clyburn said today they think they do have the votes to get it passed, which mean it could be on the president's desk as soon as tuesday. jericka. >> duncan: christina ruffini for us in washington tonight, thank you. it's a landmark day in the history of the civil rights movement. 56 years ago today, the late john lewis led a voting rights march across selma, alabama's edmund pettus bridge only to be brutally attacked by state troopers and police. unlike previous anniversaries there was no march this year. a virtual ceremony was held in its place. president biden honored lewis today by signing an executive order promoting voting access for all americans. a silent march was held in minneapolis today for george floyd. tomorrow jury selection begins in the trial of former police officer derek chauvin, who is facing murder and manslaughter charges in floyd's death. video showing chauvin pressing his knee into floyd's neck last may sparked protests around the world. police and the city are on alert, as security fences surround the courthouse and many buildings across minneapolis are boarded up. today, pope francs marked the final full day of his historic pilgrimage to iraq. the pope spoke at mosul, once the stronghold of the isis caliphate, condemning isis terrorism, while also calling for forgiveness. cbs's chris livesay is traveling with the pope. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> reporter: it was always against the odds, pope francis defying extreme security risks to come to a country as dangerous as iraq. but today marked the climax of the first ever papal visit here, with the pontiff setting foot in mosul, a city once ransacked and ruled by isis, and while liberated today, still war torn. >> ( translated ): "hope is more powerful than hatred," said the pontiff, inside what is left of this church. then off to qaraqosh, a christian town nearly annihilated by isis. the church of the immaculate conception was vandalized, desecrated and burned by islamic state, which threatened it would come to rome. but today, it's pope francis, the bishop of rome, who has come here instead. >> i think that this is the message of the pope and the goal of the holy father to encourage people to stay here. >> reporter: finally, the capstone of his visit, celebrating mass in the stadium of erbil before thousands, many who escaped from isis, like 24- year-old maria muif kamil. have you and your family been persecuted? >> yes, i am from mosul, i escaped from my place because of isis in 2014. >> reporter: but she doesn't think she will ever feel safe moving back home to mosul, where religious wounds run deep. chris livesay, cbs news, baghdad. >> duncan: well, tonight one of the most talked about interviews of the year, prince harry and meghan markle sit down with oprah winfrey airs right here on cbs. in it, markle elaborates on what it means to finally be able to speak for herself. >> it's really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege in some ways to be able to say, yes, i mean. >> and to say it for yourself. >> to say it for yourself. >> and not to have to consult with anybody at this point. >> yes, just to make a choice on your own and just be able to speak for yourself. >> duncan: roya nikkhah has covered the royals for more than a decade she a royal correspondent for the "sunday times" and joins us now from buckingham palace. roya, how will this interview do you think affect harry and meghan's relationship with the royal family? because they have already cut ties. >> it all depends on what they say, on how much detail they go into, into the grievances they felt about their split from the royal family, how much detail they go into the strained relations between various members of the royal family and exactly what they say. i mean, we know the split was acrimonious. we know it wasn't a friendly split, but i think if they go into detail, it really will make wounds very hard to heal going forwards. >> reporter: and you published an article in the "sunday times" entitled "how meghan became the unmerry wife of windsor." in it you speak to several royal insiders. what do they tell you, and is the queen expected to watch tonight? >> no, in fact my front page of the "sunday times" today is, i have been told by a source very close to the queen, she will not be staying awake to watch it tonight. she's not planning on watching it at all i have >> duncan: and they are investigating the bullying allegations against meghan, why are these accusations coming up now? >> the allegations have come out now because there was a piece written in the "times" earlier this week where people who say they are victims of bullying have come to tell stories, i think they came forward, nothing to do with buckingham palace, those who no longer work for the household, this have done that because i think they are quite fearful of what might come out of this interview of the kind of things that harry and meghan might say and i think they felt these sources felt, these people who worked for the couple felt like they wanted to bring another side of the narrative, another side of the story to the fore before this goes out with oprah. >> reporter: all right, roya nikkhah for us at buckingham palace, thank you so much. and don't forget to watch oprah with meghan and harry, a cbs prime time special tonight at 8:00, 7:00 central, here on cbs. straight ahead on the "cbs weekend news," a collision between a tractor trailer and a car is a deadly combination. ahead, a solution that could save lives. and later, please take your desk. why this teacher is giving away thousands of them. to ask yourself, w might not be 'are my bones strong?' life is full of make or break moments. that's why it's so important to help reduce your risk of fracture with prolia®. only prolia® is proven to help strengthen and protect bones from fracture with 1 shot every 6 months. do not take prolia® if you have low blood calcium, are pregnant, are allergic to it, or take xgeva®. serious allergic reactions like low blood pressure, trouble breathing, throat tightness, face, lip or tongue swelling, rash, itching or hives have happened. tell your doctor about dental problems, as severe jaw bone problems may happen. or new or unusual pain in your hip, groin, or thigh, as unusual thigh bone fractures have occurred. speak to your doctor before stopping, skipping or delaying prolia®, as spine and other bone fractures have occurred. prolia® can cause serious side effects, like low blood calcium, serious infections, which could need hospitalization, skin problems, and severe bone, joint, or muscle pain. don't wait for a break, call your doctor today, and ask about prolia®. ♪ [ sneezing ] are your sneezes putting your friends in awkward positions?
