Mark phillips looks at our digital footprint and why working from home might beonot as green as you think. First, here the eye opener your world in 90 seconds. Congress found plenty of money for lobbyists and special interest while sending the bare minimum to the American People. President trump is asking congress to amend the Coronavirus Relief bill. He wants congress to increase to 2,000. He didnt help us. We managed to get 600. America is expected to top 3 million total deaths because of the pandemic, the deadly year in u. S. History. What could be a very different january coming up. He has pardoned a bunch of murderers and grifters and liars. With less than a month left in office, President Trump issued a wave of pardons. Saying screw you to the fbi. And not Holding Russia accountable. This happened on Donald Trumps watch. This all happened on Donald Trumps watch. The countrys Infectious Disease expert, dr. Anthony fauci, got his dose of the vaccine. And eddie murphy. We are going back to america. Oh, hell no, your majesty. And all that matters. Whoa put it down hard. Even a couple of hot plays from lebron james couldnt do it. The nets destroyed the warriors. Durant throws it down on cbs this morning. The nevada wolfpack dumped a bucket of fries on their head coach to celebrate their win. [ cheers ] i was thinking fries and ketchup, not fries and gator rade. Gatorade. The fries spilled on to the field, which earned nevada a 15yard penalty. Their fries encroaching on the field. This mornings eye opener is presented by progressive. Making it easy to bundle insurance. When every second counts, still had 17 seconds left to play. The real penalty is if you eat one of those fries. I love fries its my favorite food of alltime. My mom said as a kid, just give me a fry and i would shut up forever. Where are the fries . Fries youre mean im kidding. Welcome to cbs this morning. Im here with jamie yuccas and Jericka Duncan throwing had. Shade. President trump said congress should trip the size of payments for families or he might not sign the bill. His list of demands surprised both parties. The president was largely absent duringe esident also announced series of controversial pardons, sparking accusations he is abusing his power. Chip reid at the white house covering all of these developments. Chip, good morning. Reporter well, good morning. Last night the president suddenly demanded that amount for the stimulus payment per person be increased from 600 to 2,000. Thats been the democrats position all along. So they seized on the opportunity by scheduling a vote for tomorrow, raising that amount to 2,000. It really is a disgrace. Reporter in the a surprise move, President Trump last flight demanded that congress revise the 900 billion covid relief legislation passed just days ago. Im asking congress to amend this bill and increase the ridiculously low 600 to 2,000 or 4,000 for a couple. Reporter it was republicans, not democrats who were mostly opposed to higher stimulus payments. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tweeted last night democrats are ready to bring this to the floor for unanimous consent. The president also railed against what he said were unrelated provisions in the legislation. 505 million to belize, costa rica, el salvador, honduras, nicaragua and panama. Reporter most of those provisions were in a separate funding bill passed jointly. The president s announcement was met with concerns from both sides of the aisle. Republican senator Lindsey Graham tweeted the covid19 package while imperfect will save jobs and lives. While democrat mark warner asked does the president realize that the benefits expire the day after christmas . We won by a landslide. Reporter the president also release add second video last night in which he railed against Election Results and brought up unfounded claims of fraud. Both posted just minutes after the white house announce add controversial wave of pardons. Amon them, george papadopoulos, a trump 2016 Campaign Adviser convicted of lying to authorities as part of arn investigation into Russian Election interference and alex van der zwaan a lawyer also convicted of lying during the russia probe. People who lied to cover up for themselves or for the president , they get a pardon. You know, its just another bodyblow against the rule of law in this country. Reporter the president also granted clemency to three former republican congressmen. Duncan hunter, Chris Collins and steve stockman, all convicted of separate financial crimes. Trying to burn the house of justice down on his way out the door. Reporter the president also pardoned four former security guards with the infamous Security Firm blackwater. They were convicted in connection with the deaths of iraqi civilians in 207. All of these pardons are already fueling more criticism that the president is abusing his power, by one count, 88 of the people the president has given a pardon to have a personal or political connection to him. Jamie . Interesting. Chip, thank you. The president s remarks did not mention the recent alarming spike in coronavirus cases. Yesterday dr. Anthony fauci became the latest highranking official vaccinated in public and encouraged others to get the vaccine. U. S. Officials reported more than 3,400 deaths yesterday, second highest oneday toll since the pandemic began here. We have a report on the fear that christmas celebrations will make the virus spread even faster. If you have travel plans right now, cancel those plans. Reporter as new york mayor bill de blasio pleaded with people to stay home for christmas, tensions boiled over in california over masking up during the Holiday Season. 300,000 people are dead reporter former growing pains star cameron hosted an event. There is immunity in community. Reporter Southern California is no stranger to covid restrictions. The Sheriffs Office says it made at least 235 arrests busting underground parties in december alone and in Southern California, theyre suffering from the fallout. Icus across the region at capacity with hospitals scrambling for extra space. The university of california, irvine medical certainty one of three facilities in Orange County building new mobile field hospitals to handle an influx of covid patients. Were exhausted. Holding on. Reporter Brad Spellberg is chief merld officer at the l. A. County Usc Medical Center ngts the worse case scenario. Look like new york did in april. Systematically completely overwhelmed. Like a bomb has been dropped on our home. Reporter theresa knows the emotional toll covid can take ton a family all too well. Her 85yearold parents, jerry and shirley maefed 57 years. Both hospitalized with covid just days apart. Im waving to my dad goodbye in the ambulance, im thinking, this might be the last time i see him. Reporter new this morning, the department of health and Human Services secretary alex azar Just Announced this morning that the federal government has reached a deal with pfizer for an additional 100 million doses of its vaccine. In addition to the 100 million already on the way to the federal government and of course, jericka, this moving the government closer to its ultimate goal of vaccinating all americans. Mola lenghi, thank you so much. Joining us, former cdc director dr. Tom frieden, president and ceo of the initiative resolve to save lives, which works to prevent epidemic. Doctor, good morning. Thanks for joining us. I want to get straight to an article you recently wrote where you talked about how to reopen safely. You reference immunity passports. Explain what that is and how it would work. Well, we dont know if this is going to happen, jericka, fundamentally were seeing companies, countries, other places, given people some certificate of vaccination. With the certificate people might be able to 2r568, ender places nor freely. The risk of this it will make inequality even worse, if people have more susceptibility to the virus and less access to the vaccine even more problems, but done right, immunity passports could be one of a saesf of a se things to help us get to new normal as soon as possible. Fundamentally facing a difficult few weeks and months. Theres not enough vaccine yet and were seeing the highest levels of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths the u. S. Has since the start of this pandemic. Recognizing how it could be controversial, these immunity passports, you say there should be certain standards. What do you see those standards as being for this to be effective . First off, absolute privacy. No ability of people to use that data for anything else. Second, absolutely optin. You dont want one, you dont have to get one. Third, complete transparency how theyre being used so there are no surprises anywhere. But what worries me most right now is that Congress Gets money out to states and cities and counties to get the vaccine into peoples arms. Its a great accomplishment that we have two highly effective vaccines, but money to deliver that vaccine, money to engage c pharmacists and nurses and doctors and Health Departments with the wherewith all to reach out to people and make sure theyre vaccinated is stuck in congress. Unless that money gets out well have an even more deadly winter. As youre watching these developments and with all of your experience, are you satisfied with the vaccine rollout thus far . Im really impressed that weve seen the kind of effectiveness, no one would have expected 90plus percent effectiveness in less than a year from multiple vaccines. Partly because our bodies do a good job of fighting the virus as well but were not there yet. The vaccines arent here. Months before most of us are vaccinatesed. In that time we have to double down on protection protocols. Wear a mask, avoid indoor space with other people. Increase ventilation, and soon as its your turn, get vaccinated. 18 million americans have recovered, that are documented as recovering from covid19 infections, yet we hear time and time again, learning a lot about coronavirus and this new variant. Any sense when scientists will know how long that Natural Immunity will last . This is one of the things we need to learn as quickly as possible. I wish we knew more today. There is preliminary evidence that suggests that there may be protection for as long as six months or more, but its really only as time passes that well know how long the protection lasts. Theres no perfect test to figure if youre immune to this virus yet. We hope that kind of a blood test could be developed. We appreciate your time, doctor. Thank you. Nice speaking with you. President elect joe biden says the worst of the pandemic is still to come. Hes asking americans to be ready for whats likely to be a difficult winter. Nikole killion is covering the biden transition. The inauguration . Four weeks from today. Hes made another cabinet choice, we understand . Reporter thats right. This morning president elected by by biden introducing Miguel Cardona as his new education secretary. A first task, reopening schools safely in the midst of the pandemic. Our darkest days and the battle against covid are ahead of us, not behind us. Reporter president elect joe biden put it straight to the American People. The pandemic could claim tens of thousands more lives in the months to come. Vaccine wont be able to stop that. So well still have to remain vigilant. Reporter the president elect also issued a stark warning over a massive cyber breach against multiple government agencies. This attack constitutes a grave risk to our national security. Reporter he slammed President Trump for downplaying the hack and pressed him to hold those responsible accountable suggesting as others in the administration have that it was the work of russia. This assault happened on Donald Trumps watch. When he wasnt watching. Rest assured, that even if he does not take it seriously, i will. Reporter with less than a month until his inauguration, mr. Biden continues to build his team. Theres not an obvious choice in my mind. Reporter while he has yet to name an attorney general, he is moving forward with his pick for education secretary. Connecticut education commissioner miguel car doan fla fla cardona, third latino nominated to the about the. This is the official. Reporter in california, another historic selection. Governor gavin newsom appointed his secretary of state alex padilla to fill Vice President elect Kamala Harris seat. Honored, man. And im humbled. Reporter the Vice President elect congratulated padilla calling him a champion and dear friend. As for mr. Bidens remaining cabinet nomination, hes still working through them, he said and could have more announcements between now and the new year. Nikole, thank you. Despite the pandemic, nearly 80 million americans are expected to travel over christmas and new years and many watching the weather including a storm moving from west to east. Cbs news meteorologist and climate specialist Jeff Berardelli is watching it, too. Good morning, vlad aercnd everyone. A beautiful sunrise in central park but a killer. Mark phillips shows how working from home can actually impact the planet more than you may realize. Reporter for a lot of us in these covid times, the morning commute has developed into its own new routine, fighting all that traffic down the hallway. And into the home office. But if theres one consolation to this new way of life, its the feeling that however solitary, it may be better for the planet. We are, after all, producing a less of the Global Warming greenhouse gasses we used to and spending our days in power hungry offices well, hold the smugness. Working from home is not cost free and the more of us who do it, the more environmentally expensive it becomes. Every email and tebs, especial text, especially the unnecessary little ones, every thank you or got it, every time we hit send or download or stream or zoom, they all require power. Somewhere massive banks of computers are storing and processing that data, sucking up enormous amounts of Electrical Energy to do it. The cloud doesnt so much have a Silver Lining as a carbon one. I mean, its certainly good for the planet to save your commute. Reporter but mike earners lee, who has written on the carbon cost of everything says its not that simple. On the other hand, if youre home with the heating on, which it wouldnt otherwise have to be, then thats not so good and youre probably using more computing stuff than you would be. Reporter think about it, every echlts mamail we send no requires electric to write, as it gets stored and sent, it gobbles up energy along the way and if read, it sucks up more power. We send and receive ka zillions of them. Someone here has actually done the math and figured if everyone in britain sent one less thank you email a day, the carbon saving would be like taking 3. 5 million cars off the road. Its just a rough calculation but the principle is accurate. I. T. Is a Huge Consumer of power and growing exponentially. Many more people are receiving and sending emails. So many more are streaming. Isnt that creating an Energy Hungry infrastructure . Yeah, it is. We estimate the whole of Information Communication Technology is probably responsible for somewhere between 2 and 4 of the whole worlds carbon footprint. And thats a big deal and its becoming a bigger deal. P. Reporter maybe the question we need to be asking is do i really need to send this. For cbs this morning, im Mark Phillips in london. Its actually a lot less energy to text someone. Just dont send a gif or anything else that could use up more energy. I know vlad you were working from home for so long. You actually had a crew. Yeah, we had a crew, lights, cameras and the electric bill was a little bit higher. Have you expensed that yet . I have not. I should get on that. It takes a lot of energy, though. Welcome back to cbs this morning. There is new covid relief confusion after President Trump steps in. Well talk with a member of the biden task force about the future. A shocking bill. How new orleans big holiday display served as a beacon in hard times. First the eye opener at 8 00. The covid relief package facing uncertainty. The president suddenly demanded that amount per person increase. Thats been the democrats position all along, so they ceased on that position. The federa government has reached a deal with pfizer for additional 100 million doses in addition to the 100 million already on the way. What worries me most is that congress get money out to the states to get the vaccine into peoples arms. Boston is 61 degrees on Christmas Morning but florida is near freezing around 30. If you are looking for a white christmas, you have a better chance in atlanta. 2020, baby. Christmas version of crazy train going viral. The appearing actor performed the song with nothing but paper wrapper rolls. Love it. Finally something i can do with wrapping paper because im terrible at wrapping gifts. That was amazing. That was good. Gayle, tony and anthony are off today. We have some breaking news on the coronavirus this morning. The federal government has agreed to buy an additional 100 million doses of the vaccine. The Trump Administration has been criticized for not wrapping up a larger supply. Now the u. S. Government have have an opportunity to vaccinate 100 million americans. The president says the package needs to give more help. Congress found plenty of money for foreign countries, lobbyists and specialists and the bare minimum to the American People. President trump demanded the increase of 600 per person payment to 2,000 and House Speaker pelosi sided with the president saying House Democrats are willing to un man newsly approve a 2,000 payment. Most republicans spent months trying to reduce the size of those checks. When the pandemic hit, our lives turned upside down and charnged. How many of those changes will stay with us. What to expect in education to travel. Dr. Celine, a member of the president elect biden Advisory Board and in new york city. Good morning. Good morning. Let me read from the audience something president elect biden said yesterday, he said, quote, our darkest days in the battle against covid19 are ahead of us not behind us. What are the Biggest Challenges we face in the year ahead . I think in the coming month, we are very concerned about the fact that hospitals and icus are currently full. Doctors and nurses are burnt out. We are experiencing the results of the thanksgiving surge and people are traveling for christmas and new years. We are panicking on what are we going to do on the hospital front lines. Some staff just saying im fed up, im quitting. I cant do this anymore. You cant defense production act your way out of a shortage of health care providers. You can play maybe a little around the margins with bringing people back in from retirement or promoting medical students to first year intern status but that is not nearly enough to meeting the needs. If any time i would say to people please do not travel, this is the time. This emerge yens of the new variant makes it even more urgent. The vaccines he wants to see in the first 100 days of his term. Is that possible . Well have to ramp up vaccinations. In the first week or so, we did not get to a million vaccinations. We need to be doing a million per day to be getting to the targets that the president elect has outlined. That will mean a massive increase. Again, when you have all of your doctors and nurses in hospitals taking care of sick patients who will give those vaccinations . We have a massive man power problem now . We spoke with doctor freeman who said it is so important to those people wearing those masks. Do you see a future in the next six months to a year where we wont be wearing a mask, where this is sort of a new normal for some is time . This is a new normal. Six months would be very optimistic. I dont think well have everybody vaccinated by then, it is important for people to understand even once youve been vaccinated. We do not know that you cant still get fekted and transmit to other people. All we know is that it will prevent you from getting severely ill and dying. Even once you are vaccinated, it is crucial to wear a mask and help contain this. I will be vaccinated later this morning myself and i will continue to wear a mask. For the American People when it comes to battling the coronavirus, what do you expect to see over the next year . I think youll see a massive increase in testing. It is really hard to contain something when you dont know what you you are even dealing with. Weigh see the very tip of the iceberg, which are the people getting severely ill ending up in hospitals and dying, we dont see the part that is under the water and is all of those people getting infected. The only way to reveal is doing massively more testing. The other thing the variant has highlighted, we are not doing enough gnomic surveillance. That is much more intense testing to look at the genome to see if it is mutating. We dont generally do that. The United Kingdom has already found 400 separate strains of the coronavirus. We have done barely 40. We are not doing nearly enough of this kind of testing that we need to be doing. Doctor, thank you very much. We appreciate it. Ahead, a california woman is billed thousands for a medical test she said the doctor did not tell much more news ahead. A christmas tradition making spirits bright. The pandemic made most of us either cancel or alter our plans. One Holiday Light display is doing things the way they did it in the past. Youve got the holidays, and weve got you with all the gifts for less. At ross. Yes for less . A simple visit to the doctor leads to more than 12,000 in medical bills for a california woman. Her case is part of our continuing bill of the month partnership with Kaiser Health news and npr examining medical costs. Lorraine said she was billed without her knowledge. I felt pain and cramping. Lorraine and her husband were traveling through new mexico in may when she started to experience pelvis pains. She went to the closest innetwork hospital and claimed she was told she would be given a routine swab test. Three weeks later the hospital bill arrived. It totalled more than 12,000, listing an entire Testing Panel for sexually transmitted infections that she didnt know had been ordered. When i found out from my Insurance Company that i was being build for sti tests, i hit the roof. My husband and i have been married for 26 years. Theres no reason to test for anything like that. Reporter lorraines insurance negotiated the bill down and paid 4,000 but she was still on the hook for 3,000. I didnt want them taking my to court, having that on my record and come back to new mexico if they decide to file the court case. She paid 250. But when kaiser called about her health dill, and they say they didnt charge for anything beyond what the doctor ordered. Their prices are really high. What does that tell you . Theyre overbilling in the first case. Reporter her case shows how much costs can vary in different settings. The lab fees reflected in the hospital bills were much hyper than what medicare was charged. We get a lot of stories where people are going and getting the fees removed. The red tape in getting the fees removed can be problematic. You heard us just talking right now. Thank you so much for joining us. Ahead of americas most influential sorry, i got a little off topic there. Reading the prompter a little ahead of myself. Dr. Elizabeth rosenthal, thank you so much for yojoining us. Lets start there. Thats good, thanks. How do you go from a simple swab to thousands of dollars in. What people dont know is hospitals and doctors can mark up tests, lab tests of all kinds and the markouts can be crazy. So my advice to patients is when a doctor says oh, im just going to send off a little test say, what is it and how much will it cost . A patient should know if that cost sounds like a lot, they can say ill go have it done at a commercial lab where it will be much, much cheaper. And you have to really be an advocate for yourself. It sounds like it might have been hard to get a second test on because she was traveling. What do you recommend. Even if you i think we need to feel more empowered as patients because these bills can be in the tens of thousands of dollars. As i said, i did have this happen once and you end up trying to negotiate. Is that something that you recommend doing . Sure. I always say dont just write the check, start negotiating and lorraine did that. It didnt get her very far in this cassnd in this case the best defense is a good offense. So take that advice and get your blood drawn elsewhere. How does that also overall affect your debt, your credit score . Well, this is why people get so scared because the first letter you get is often a bill with a prompt pay discount maybe and the second one is roar spending you to chks. Americans are good bill paying citizens. They try their hardest, they send up so there are these halfway slo but its unfair when patients are feeling vulnerable what to do this. Im looking for a Better Health care solution, not turning everyone into a Health Care Prize fighter. In 2022, do you think that will have an expect on. Yes, absolutely. But this bill, lets be clear, its long overdue. Congress has been considering this for years, in a bipartisan way. It will erase some of those really, really large outofnetwork bills so thats good. Its not what many of us had hoped for and it also protects patients from those bills but requires the insurer and the hospital to negotiate and i worry that insurers rather than go through that cumbersome process will say, eh, well just pay it. You and i wont pay the bills this year but our premiums will go up next year. Were going to watch very carefully on mohsyoure watching cbs this morning.
