As you can imagine the proposal is getting a bit of pushback. Take a quick drive along the side streets along interstate 880 and theres a problem. Oaklands Homeless Population is growing dramatically on a daily basis. Reporter the latest estimates show about 4000 People Living on the streets in oakland, so the city is looking at every option to manage the crisis. We are in Alameda County. Alameda county has greater open space in the city of oakland. Reporter october 14, the oakland city administrator wrote a letter to the Alameda County administrator asking to use the fairgrounds for unsheltered residents. I immediately responded i thought this was a preposterous and ridiculous request on the part of the city of oakland. Reporter the supervisor represents the district and says this isnt a case have not my backyard, it is about how to best serve the needs of the unhoused in oakland. A better idea is to get a large encampment in the parking lot of the oakland coliseum. Over 10,000 spaces there totally underutilized at this time. Basically with the Alameda County administrator suggested in the letter sent back to the city yesterday, find a site jointly owned by the county and city. That a Council Member says the site needs to be kept open for future Business Opportunities like a new professional sports team. Weve got to create jobs so many of us wont wind up being unhoused.
