A special Testing Center was set up yesterday at the south county annex and another center will be open tuesday through friday on wren avenue look at this video, it is of a coast guard rescue on the rough waters, 50yearold man had to be airlifted from a fishing boat for medical reasons and the boat turned in the choppy seas half a mile off the island while the coast guard crew member was lower down. The man was hoisted to safety and transported to emergency crews waiting for him and at this point no word yet on his condition. Lets get straight into the forecast and i will start off with what might be one of the more important items to point out about how the wind event is coming our way for later today and monday and it is different than any window that we have has a far this year. This map is the reason for that. We have a wind advisory for just about the entire bay area and we have not had one of these before, at least not this season them with several other red flag warnings weve told you about in this is different because we will get wendy where you live starting today around five or six. That is in every Community Within the sand shaded part of the map and if youre in the bay area that is you. You are included in a wind advisory, read the line from 35 to 50 mileperhour wind gusts, you can break a branch off a tree or blow over a drought compromised tree but it is the flying debris like a broken branch or a tree that can take out a localized power line. As much as we have talked to you about the Public Safety power shutoffs, this is another concern because even if youre not on the map you could have a localized power outage overnight if you happen to get something into a power line in your neighborhood. This is the other story and the main headline, the red flag warning that goes from 8 pm tonight until 11 am on tuesday, noticed the increase in numbers, a set of 35 to 50 mile perhour gusts where we live it is 50 to 70 mileperhour wind gusts up in the mountains if you watch the way today plays out it is great to start the day and by the time we have gotten to one or two or 2 pm we quickly see the marine layer pushed out as the wind makes their presence felt at the upper levels but in terms of where you will feel it whenever you live we got to this map and watch the progression by 1 pm as the marine layer is pushed out, we have not felt it down on the ground yet, except in the mountains, we started to notice a 25 mileperhour wind gusts at the top of mount st. Helena. This is the starting line for when the wind will turn on a dime almost watch what happens after seven. We see a widespread surge and most notable wind and gusting into 20s and 30s is noticeably windy, not terribly strong but it gets stronger overnight. Once we get ahead to 4 am we see gusts to 33 up around napa and 61 on mount st. Helena the Early Morning hours on mondays when the strongest wind will come through and by sunrise things will start to relax a little bit but because we have the strongest wind coming through in the overnight there is a reason why the Berkeley Hills were advised to evacuate yesterday, even long before the wind started. Look at the wind speeds at 3 am tomorrow, gusting into the mid 20s around interstate 80 but 45 mileperhour wind gusts in the hills and that shows how much stronger those winds can rush down the mountainside. For any location on the west side of a Mountain Range, if you live on slopes or down at the bottom of the Mountain Range like the Berkeley Hills or the Rural Communities and wine country, those are the more vulnerable places the need to be aware of the surroundings. There is a pretty wide window from later this evening through noon tomorrow, a little before that, can we narrow that window a little bit entire time . Well the worst of the wind will come in the darkness tonight overnight, really from 9 pm until one or 2 am. That is the strongest wind however the red flag when he doesnt expire until Tuesday Morning because the relative committees will stay bone dry through then. So there is that second aspect. A scary sight in one Southern California neighborhood this weekend as a Mountain Lion was spotted taking a snooze in the tree. Wildlife official told families to keep their pets and children inside while they waited for the giant cat to wake up and go home it to the nearby santa monica mountains. No action was taken against the Mountain Lion. The deputies stuck around to keep an eye on it just in case. Heavily protected crews vacuumed out several asian giant hornets from a tree in washington and the nest is potentially the first of its kind in the United States. Experts say asian giant hornets usually nest in the ground but occasionally make their homes and dead trees. Coming up, Sonoma County preparing again, find out the links some residents are going to. The 49ers are playing the patriots today and it is the only 49ers game schedule on cbs this evening and you can see it on kpix 5. The dodgers were on their way to being one went away from winning the world series but then this happened. The final, amazing play that had baseball fans cheering in disbelief. Here about what went down the rays looking to tie up the world series at two games apiece but nobody could have imagined the way they game ended last night. Tampas gman joy looking this, the ninth home run of the postseason was hit, that such a Major League Baseball record and it cuts los angeles lead to one and now brandon now with a three run blast gives tampa the lead, roberts cannot believe it, it is his third home run of the serious and los angeles load the bases in palo alto John Peterson with a liner off the glove and a two run court, Cody Belanger was tagged out to end the inning but the rays answered in the bottom frame but a solo shot was blasted and the game was tied at six. At the top eight corey seeger its a left with two outs and chris taylor scores, 76 the dodgers bottom of the knife Brett Phillips up with two on and two out. Now down to centerfield and they have tied the game, now he stumbles and the ball gets away, tampa bay wins it. What a finish, the ball is kicked in its center and eight trips coming around third but catcher will smith missed the ball allowing him to score the gamewinning run, 87 is the final to tie the series at two games apiece. It is hard to believe right now like that just happened and when i saw randy slip i was like shoot at least we tied it up and then he missed the ball i dont know what happened and then he scored the next thing i know. I get dog piled and here i am talking to the boys. Lets start a half hour with the check of the weather. Doesnt get wendy until sunset and really the strongest wind comes overnight for sunday night into monday and i will go into a lot of detail on what to expect from wind advisories and went with the red flag warnings. But this morning we have those low clouds over the east bay but they are not as low as they were yesterday morning. Yesterday they were obscuring parts of the bridge towers and some of those here as you get into the skyline for San Francisco. There are still some clouds but they are not as low and it will look gray when the sunshine comes out and the temperatures are right where they should be this time of year, most of us in the low to mid 50s. Looking at where the clouds are now look how quickly they will get eroded away and so by the time we get to 1 pm it is sunshine and we turn our focus to the wind. Temperatures will be mid70s inland, 71 at the bay and 64 at the beaches a wind advisory starts until 4 pm this afternoon and it includes the entire bay area. And on top of that the red flag warning, more on both of these in a few minutes. Com or mac the city of berkeley is urging residents in the hills to get out now before there is a fire and it is something theyve never done before. The city says it takes a lot of time to evacuate the hills when there is an emergency. In 1991 the berkeley and Oakland Hills fire serves as a grim reminder that some people died trying to evacuate. The narrow streets in the Berkeley Hills are a cause for concern for emergency crews and one broken down car or downed tree could block a road. If you try to get out down this road it would be suicide, no other word for it the more people that preevacuate the easier it will be for people to evacuate and four fire engines and Police Vehicles to get up those very narrow streets. Additional fire crews are ready to go including two strike teams that will monitor the area, at least 10 hotels have agreed to offer discounted rates to berkeley residents during the red flag warning. To Sonoma County, every fire season the county there finds itself in the same routine, appearing for the power to be shut off. John ramose on tricks that residents have now discoveredreporter many of the same communities affected by wildfire are also affected by power shutoffs and in Sonoma County theyve been pretty good at preparing for them and in the hills above santa rosa, the people in the kenwood neighborhood have gotten used to it. A lot of your neighbors are hooked to generators. Spirit is the song of our people as you drive through the neighborhood with generator after generator after generator. He lives in a wooded area often affected by wildfire that even those who do not have to think about it, the spencer sisters restaurant in downtown santa rosa are lucky and it is on the same grid as the Police Station and hospital so it probably will not lose power t no a lick to city for two or three days can be devastating. Throwing away food and having to rebuy is that a huge financial hit . It really is and it is often not covered by insurance that can be tricky for restaurants. Any food that was below 40b0 has to be thrown out a lot of restaurants have their own generators or know where they can get one but even if they do not a lot of settlements have discovered a lower tech solution. National ice Company Santa rosa cells dry ice and when the Public Safety power shutoffs first began they became pretty popular. Pg e may be scared everybody into it because everybody was coming in here scared. Harold hughes discovered that placing a block of dry ice and refrigerator can work as well as a generator. It keeps it cold for days . Yes. It is a Lesson Learned from experience and with wildfires, a pandemic and Power Outages under their belts living in Sonoma County aint for sissies. We wanted to sound like it was organized chaos. The music, the office all have been challenging but it is something the longtime leader has admiration for. They have a love of radio and that is the kind of cool thing. It is time now for check of the weather with meteorologist darren peck. I want to go into little bit of an explanation for why the wind event will be different and what makes it a little more on the extreme end from what we have seen so far the first thing is to take a look at the big picture. Looking out into the pacific is an exaggerated pattern, watch the clouds on the other side of the ocean. A really weird looking pattern and a deep trough that digs a very deep hole and that means it has to balance out and go just as extreme on the other side. That means what goes up must come down and will come right back down again. This is a very extreme wave pattern and you dont see the downward side. You will see it, there is a lot of cold air. And in fact so much cold air rushing down into the interior of the western United States they are about to get 2 feet of snow in the colorado rockies. If you think back to the earlier part of this fire season, back in september it made news on the rockies got snow and it was an early season storm. The same system gave an offshore wind event that started the creek fire and the north complex fire from both of those fires in the Sierra Nevada have been this is a similar looking pattern but only more intense. As the cold air goes into the rockies it drops the snow and strong offshore wind picks up. There is a pattern to be seen in a big picture pattern. As far as how this will be different and the way we will feel it on the ground, this is the top issue been a wind advisory for all communities where we live the starts at four in the afternoon today and it doesnt expire until 11 monday. Gusts 35 to 50 miles an hour which would be enough to get debris flying around and possibly break off a branch on a tree or take outlook less power lines, just as a possibility, those could happen anywhere and that could cause localized Power Outages. Outside of the idea of a Public Safety power shutoffs, even if youre not in that the wind will be Strong Enough in the neighborhood you could get a localized power outage at any point in this is the other issue been much stronger when with a red flag warning about going into effect tonight is saying in effect until tuesday. As we watch the wind coming from the north today the thing that stands out is the defining line between today and tonight. That is when the wind turns on at sunset and once we get past sunset we notice the stronger wind filtering through the mountains and down at the lower elevations where we all live, much stronger wind in the mountains. 30 mileperhour gusts possible for many communities and if we come back to the peak of this, which is midnight to 4 am time frame of how much stronger the winds are in the Berkeley Hills. As the wind comes from the east any of these Mountain Ranges act like a little bit of a ramp that forced down the wind quickly, on the downwind side and the best way to think about this is if you live on the west slope of the Mountain Range, whether the east bay hills or mountains up in the north bay you are a little more vulnerable to this scenario because the wind get an added boost of energy as they rush downhill and that is different which is more concerning, particularly for places like the Berkeley Hills also the dry air which keeps filtering in, relative timidity going down into the Single Digits and staying that way into tuesday, temperatures are not the story, it is a subtle warmup over the next few days. But it is the wind event late tonight and tomorrow that make the headlines. It is not the wind in and of itself but the wind and the interaction with the pjd equipment so fingers crossed that they can make appropriate mitigations. One observation, 2020 has been the biggest fire season on record so far. To my knowledge not one of these fires so far from this year was sparked by faulty pjd equipment so there many ways these things can get going.
