KPIX KPIX 5 News At 6am July 12, 2024

Tomorrow with a fire weather watch for the north bay mountains above 1,000 feet that includes in glass fire for tomorrow due to gusty winds and low relative humidity values. In the meantime this afternoon, looking at temperatures in the mid 60s for pacifica and mid 70s for San Francisco and mid 80s for oakland but still heating up looking at 89 for san jose and 99 for concord. 92 for napa. Well talk about what you can expect taking you through the rest of the week and also that smoke forecast in just a few minutes. Lets check in with gianna for a look at traffic for the latest on road closures. Thanks. Yeah, you know some things have shifted just a bit. We have a different road closure along 128 now. Kind of extended at least between the areas of Petrified Forest road and Sonoma County line. So 128 closed in both directions through there. Closures on 29 as well. Right at deer park and right at lake county line. All the way to tubbs lane and you will see directions both directions of that area closed. Also highway 12 the closures continue as well in the Sonoma County area, you can see that on the map a pretty large stretch of highway 12 pretty much between mission boulevard over to arnold. And service streets in and around the areas remain shut down as firefighters work on the glass fire. Now your morning drive is already starting to get busy as well with metering lights on at the bay bridge. Ill have your travel times coming up in my next report. As the glass fire continues to grow, some residents are anxiously waiting to hear when they can return home. Others waiting to hear if they will need to evacuate. This morning, the napa county area of angwin is under a mandatory evacuation order. Along with the city of calistoga and the hills to the west between Petrified Forest road and Diamond Mountain road. In Sonoma County evacuation orders have been downgraded to warnings and santa rosa, west of calistoga road. Kpix 5s emily turner is there this morning. Reporter finally glad theres some good news to report. Which is overnight. No new evacuation orders. The fire though has grown to 46,000 acres and only 2 contained. You can see some of those flames behind me that they are smoldering up there on the hillside above napa valley. Now calistoga is the area that remains a ghost town for now but its just a waiting game as changing winds are expected to hit the area and theyre looking to receive which way the flames are going to move next. Now thats up to firefighters to try and get containment lines drawn ahead of that. Monday night, the blaze was slowly approaching calistoga town. But now, the fire has moved up and its orange glow can be seen on the northeast side of highway 29. Fire crews are now working to keep those flames from jumping the highway. They also say that there are more than 2,000 firefighters here fighting the blaze and in sonoma and napa counties. Calistoga residents say theyre glad the fire hasnt entered the city limits but theyre still nervous and really tired of doing this over and over again. The tubbs fire was just a few blocks from our house the first time and then evacuated for kincade. Were all okay. Were resilient. We were full of love and blessed with so much. But it just keeps hitting us, you know . Its like come on. All right all right. Please. Reporter and you really have to empathize with the folks. We talked to people yesterday who told us they lost their home in the tubs fire in 2017. And then the home they stayed to defend despite evacuation orders, they were literally hosing off to try and save because that was their rebuilding. So its just really tough for the folks out here in the north bay. And now for firefighters, theyve got challenges ahead of them. They have to protect the structures as the fires are smoldering. But also really build and then defend containment lines ahead of red flag warning weather that is headed our way later this week. In napa valley, im emily turner, kpix 5. In the south bay, even though the czu complex is now fully contained so much residents in san mateo and santa cruz counties face yet another threat. Debris flow. According to the map developed by a watershed Emergency Response team, areas around scott creek, big basin state park, and cascade state ranch have a 60 to 100 risk of debris flow. The counties are expected to update the map within the next two weeks and theyre also working on evacuation plans. Im anne makovec at the live news desk. And some breaking news near berkeley. Between the many interruptions the candidates did make some points about the pandemic, health care, and the president s u. S. Supreme court nominee. Here in the bay area, some watched last nights debate from the comfort of their own homes and others hosted a small private gathering. The fourth board tap room and grill showed the debate on one screen. The baseball playoffs on another. This morning, folks tell us if theres one thing both sides can agree on, that next debate needs less interrupting and less name calling. Well, i didnt quite know what to expect. The metering lights are officially on at the bay bridge toll plaza, 880 overpass almost to the foot of the maze at this point. No accidents thats the positive. Your drive time now at about 23 minutes to go from the maze across the span into the city coming off the skyway where that fremont exit is. So you have got a few brake lights across the upper deck of the bay bridge as well. So keep that in mind if you are getting ready to head out the door. Its already a slow ride for that east bay into the city commute. Taking a look at some of the other bay area bridges. Specifically the Golden Gate Bridge. You can see traffic is pretty light but they are dealing with some fog coming out of marin county as you head into San Francisco. Fog advisory remains in effect for the Golden Gate Bridge so limited visibility maybe a factor for part of the morning drive heading through there. We have a trouble spot southbound 880 right at hesperian boulevard. A crash here blocking at least that left lane and according to the maps here a backupall the way to the 238 and 580 connector out of the Castro Valley y. Traffic backing up on to 580 because of that crash and then getting on to 880 itself heading into san lorenzo. Heading to the san mateo bridge, that may certainly slow you down just a bit. Checking air quality conditions, looking good to moderate this morning but closer to the glass fire and calistoga. Looking at unhealthy air quality this morning. A spare the air alert remains in effect today due to the hazy skies all the way through friday. There we go with that spare the air alert in effect for today through the workweek. Daytime highs through the afternoon, going to be cool and breezy along the coast in the mid 60s. As we look around the bay. Hazy skies and mild temperatures and mid 70s to mid 80s. And our inland locations will be heating up into the upper 80s upper 90s and some of the hottest spots will hit the triple digits. 100 degrees with those hazy skies inland this afternoon. So that heat dome still parked overhead and as we look to tomorrow, that ridge of High Pressure is only going to build and expand for us and were going to start to see offshore winds as well. So hot through the end of the week especially tomorrow and we have a big the fianaty a fire weather watch ghliin yellowntil e the north bay mountains and elevations above 1,000 feet. And that does include the glass fire. So a big concern as we watch the winds increase. And lower relative humidity values for tomorrow into friday. A heat advisory for most of the bay area for tomorrow as well with that extreme heat. And temperatures will be 15 to 25 degrees above average for this time of year. And as we look to tomorrow. That smoke concentration forecast, hazy skies and i think the smokiest conditions will be of course in the north bay and then into the east bay. But look as we look head into tomorrow. As we are going to see even smokier conditions for all of the bay area with the offshore winds for tomorrow. And also for friday. Daytime highs for the south bay, upper 80s clara and san jose.
