This is the cbs evening news with Norah Odonnell, reporting from the nations capitol. Odonnell good evening and thank you for joining us, tonight President Trump is refusing to directly address allegations that he avoided paying any federal income tax for years. Using a series of loopholes, writeoffs and businesses wills to shield himself from the same type of taxes nearly all working americans pay. The New York Times says it has documents showing President Trump paid only 750 in income tax his first year in office, that his businesses are losing money, and that he personally owes 421 million on loans made to his companies. Today the speaker of the house suggested those debts could be a could be a threat to National Security. And tonight the president does not appear to be denying the facts in the times report. On twitter he is accusing the newspaper of illegally obtaining his information and arguing his Financial Statements are impressive. Now for a president who built his reputation and his presidency on the idea that he is the ultimate deal maker, these new revelations now threaten to once again upend the president ial campaign and the first debate with former Vice President joe biden tomorrow night. Theres a lot of new reporting to get to tonight. We have a team of correspondents covering all the news. Cbs ben tracey will lead off our coverage tonight at the white house, good evening, ben. Reporter norah, good evening. President trump is the first president since Richard Nixon not to release his tax returns and when these revelations came out he first called them fake news. Now he is trying to justify how he handled his taxes. Tonight President Trump is not answering questions about records he has long tried to conceal. In a bombshell report the New York Times obtained tax return data covering more than two decades. It shows President Trump paid just 750 in federal income tax in 2016 and 2017, the same amount a single adult making about 18,000 would owe. And in ten of the 15 years before that, he paid nothing because his businesses lost so much money. The Biden Campaign turned the tax revelations into an ad showing what average americans rage americans the times report contradicts mr. Trumps billionaire business guru image. They paid me 213 million. Reporter many of his businesses including golf courses and hotels report losing large amounts of money. The president also used Tax Deductions to fund his lavish lifestyle, writing off expenses for housing, aircraft. Youre fired. Reporter and even 70,000 in hair styling for his tv appearances. Totally fake news. Made up, fake. Reporter on sunday the president denied the report. Today he defended his use of depreciation and tax credits in a pair of tweets. Mr. Trump has long claimed there is nothing to hide in his tax returns, while refusing to release them. I look forward to releasing that. I look forward to releasing many things. I will release many things and people will be really shocked. Reporter the documents obtained by the times show the i. R. S. Is auditing a questionable 73 million tax refund the president claimed and could now be forced to pay back with interest. The records also show mr. Trump took in 73 million from foreign deals during his first two years in office and is now facing hundreds of millions of dollars in loans coming due. This president appears to have over 400 million in debt 420, whatever it is, Million Dollars in debt. To whom . Different countries . What is the leverage they have . For me this is a National Security question. Odonnell ben joins us now from the white house. So, what are these documents reveal about ivanka trumps role in the Family Business . Reporter well, norah, according to the New York Times these tax documents suggest that ivanka trump was paid 750,000 in unspecified consulting fees while she was an employee of the trump organization. Those payments could have helped the family reduce its overall tax bill. Odonnell all right, ben tracy, thank you. The candidates will face off for the first time tomorrow night and about a hundred Million People are expected to tune in to the first president ial debate on tuesday. Cbs ed okeefe covers the Biden Campaign and joins us from the debate site in cleveland. All right, ed, we have seen the Biden Campaign capitalizing on these revelations about trumps taxes with that new ad, but thats not all, right . Reporter no, its not norah, thats right. They are also now selling buttons and tshirts that say i paid more income taxes than donald trump. Here in the debate hall tomorrow night we expect biden will argue that the president cheats the system while the average american played by the rules and had to pay more in taxes. Hes also expected to do something he has been doing recently out on the campaign trail, talking up his working class roots in his hometown of scranton, pennsylvania, versus the president s more comfortable new york upbringing. But for biden there is risk tomorrow night. He could be challenged to stay focused and disciplined in the face of what are expected to be harsh attacks by the president , potentially on his son hunter biden and the work that he did in china and ukraine that was the subject of a recent congressional investigation, and on bidens own mental fitness. Those sorts of attacks do get under bidens skin and have the potential to knock him off balance. His aides hope he keeps focused on what is working for him and him and keeping him ahead of the polls by raising questions about the president s oversight of the coronavirus pandemic and the economic downturn its creating. Norah . Odonnell all right, ed okeefe, thank you. And dont forget to join us for cbs news live coverage of the first president ial debate tomorrow night at 9 00 eastern, 6 00 in the west.
