Reporter it is here in the hills above of calistoga road outside of santa rosa where firefighters are working hard to protect homes. The fire is moving across the hillsides, protecting many homes scattered in the area. This crew scrambles to scrape away anything that can burn, and another uses something you would never think of for fire fighting, a leaf blower, faster and more efficient than a rake. Because there are always charred homes nearby. And on plum ranch road the fire is getting dangerously close to another house. This team has been here for almost 36 hours. It looks like pretty tough work you up here. Everybody at this incident has been working since yesterday. Not a lot of resources throughout the state of california right now. We are doing the best we can. Reporter you look exhausted. I feel great. Reporter moments after that interview the fire flared up and we werent sure we could stay. An example of how quickly things can change. As we were about to leave, the fire swept over the road, blocking our exit. Bulldozers moved in, but honestly, the only thing we could do is wait it out. In a few minutes the fire was across and we could get out, but the firefighters are staying until the last minute protecting the home. Above calistoga road, don ford, kpix 5 news. Two different scenes at a st. Helena hospital. Ambulances arrived yesterday morning and began evacuating patients at Adventist Health hospital. 41 people were transported to nearby facilities. Now more on how the fires are impacting our air quality. Darren . A lot of what you showed, juliette, with the satellite reading the flames, here is the satellite just showing you the smoke, as if you were up in the space station looking down at Northern California. This has become all too familiar. It kind of goes in waves. Now that we had another offshore wind event you are seeing smoke all over the pace. The glass fire is that plume of smoke. But look at how many others there are. The august complex is the complex of fires on the north coast that started last month from our local fires that started from the lightning show. That one still going and it really took off. Thankfully as far as the smoke is concerned, the wind is blowing it all that way so it is not going to last. But look at how many other fires there are. The zogg fire. That wasnt even around yesterday. So , in terms of what this means to a lot of people, if we look at the red, that is the higher concentration of smoke in the atmosphere. No doubt you have seen the haze out there. Paul has a good news story for those of you in and around the immediate bay thanks to the on shore flow. Here is what happens as the smoke plays out. The smoke will come back in. We will get a little help by the time we get to wednesday as it starts to push away. Ken, over to you. Thank you, darren. We are getting an update on the glass fire. A live look at a briefing with the Sonoma County and cal fire officials. This thing started a few minutes ago. Lets listen in and get the latest. Not good for air quality but great for us to work on containing this fire and working on putting it out. So, again, the firefighters are out on the line again today. A double shift due to the lack of resources statewide due to the over 25, i believe 27 major fires to date, stretching the 17,400 firefighters deployed throughout the state to their breaking point. But our firefighters are holding the line, digging in and finding that inner strength to protect the communities that we have sworn an oath to do so. So, the fire did make it to oakmont and into an del early this morning. But there was a valiant firefighter by our local firefighters and cal firefighters here on the east side of santa rosa to save as many homes as they could, and the statement i heard is that they saved far more than they lost, so there was there were, indeed, structures destroyed and damaged this morning, but it was a win overall for a valiant effort for the firefighters to circle up the resources that we did have and make a concerted attack where we would make the most difference w. That, i will call it end of report great, thank you, chief. Has chief tony gosner been able to join us yet . I think he was having trouble. We will get him on as soon as we can. So, lets go to an update about the evacuation areas. We have Sergeant Spencer crumb of the Sonoma County sheriffs office. Sergeant . You are muted. Sorry, can you hear me now. Got it. Sorry. Our latest mandatory evacuations are occurring in the area of anna dell and bennett ridge. Those are the latest ones as of a few hours ago. We have over 60,000 people evacuated in Sonoma County. Our hearts go out to them. I know this is tough on everybody. I want to thank everybody i know it is very tough. As of about 30 minutes ago, i was just notified of our first arrest with no lawful purpose. A 17yearold was seen hopping fences in the area of Maria Carrillo high school and arrested in the backyard of a resident in that area. We are not tolerating anybody being in a evacuation zone who does not belong there. Number one, we are asking everybody to evacuate, Pay Attention to the mandatory Evacuation Orders. You can hear the highlow sirens, then it is time to go. If you dont live around that area and decide to come around that area and enter a evacuation zone, you are subject to arrest and we will enforce the law completely and make arrests in that case. We have not put out a fresh release because i just got word of this, but we will be doing that soon, and, again, i want to thank everybody for their patience. I know this is trying on everybody. Keep your eyes and ears open and call Law Enforcement if you need us. Thank you for that update, sergeant. Next we will go to the Santa Rosa Police chief ray navarro. Chief . Thank you very much. Not a lot has changed for the Police Department since this morning. We still have mandatory evacuation zones that are still active and are not safe due to the serious threat of the fires. So, as sergeant crumb has mentioned, we do take these seriously when people come into these areas, so we do have officers that are patrolling the areas for looters and we are taking a zero tolerance approach to this. Everything east of brush creek, mission boulevard, and somerville road is still closed and no one is allowed back in right now. We are, again, asking for the publics help when over the next several days as we are addressing the evacuated areas, and it is very dangerous to go back in there. And it gets in the way of the Public Safety resources who are in there try ing to fight the fires that. Is all i had to record. Okay. Thank you, chief. For an update on a what is happening and the county Emergency Operations center, lets go to the director of emergency management. Chris . Hey, everybody, Chris Connelly here. Evacuation numbers and zones remain relatively steady as briefed by sergeant crumb. We are looking at six shelters operating in the county at this point, as well as with reaware of several others that are being operated by a local communitybased organizations. We are working with the American Red Cross to open a seventh shelter at an estate university. Our focus remains on community sheltering, Community Communications and engagement. We are starting a formal Damage Assessment conducted by cal fire. As always, we are urging our residents to touch base with the soco emergency. Org to receive the latest information regarding the evacuations, the maps indicating the areas being impacted, as well as information and references for such things as where to go for assistance or shelter at this time. That concludes the brief. Thank you, chris. We are also pleased to welcome congressman Jerod Huffman joining us today. Congressman . Thank you, paul. I wanted everyone to know that congressman Mike Thompson and i are fully engaged as we always have been in these situations to make sure the federal support available to our Community Happens quickly. We are working very closely with all the other elected officials at the state and local level to make sure that happens. I will just mention one thing and let you get back to the First Responders and others. If you are under an Evacuation Order and you need to incur expenses to house you and your family until you can get back to your house, save the receipts. If you can document those expenses, either congressman thompson or i and our teams would be happy to work with you to try to get some federal reimbursement. It is only a few hundred dollars but it is available to folks subject to those Evacuation Orders. Thanks a lot. Thank you very much. Save your receipts. The fire is the biggest threat to Public Safety in Northern California. As we know, additional teams arrived last night both in the sonoma, as well as the napa side of this fire. The state continues to be in direct coordination with both the city of santa rosa, as well as the county of sonoma. I want to say how grateful we are to the mayor and his Incredible Team with the city for all their work. The state will insure that all needs a
