They were going to receive some brandnew trailers to temporarily house these teenagers are part of a fleet dispatched from sacramento. 15 trailers were dropped off in the city of oakland lot but nine months later, they are still there, sitting empty. Some of the trailers got reallocated before we could use them. Oakland told bill they had to reclaim trailers to house Covid Patients and that never happened but he waited patiently and then in july, positive update. Caltrans was going to make available one lot in west oakland at third and peralta for all 15 trailers. We had a plan that was ready to execute, so our youth prepared to move and our staff was prepared to move. Then another roadblock, this time from washington. The Trump Administration provokes federal approval to use highway land for any calmness projects across california. It comes after President Donald Trump criticized californias handling of the homeless crisis. The fhwa revoked perusal of five projects. They said temporary homeless shelters are not inappropriate use of the highway rightofway. Caltrans director fights back, saying washingtons unexpected relocations have created a highly unfortunate situation for all parties. The Highway Administration eventually approved two of the disputed locations in San Francisco for homeless shelters that have already been belts. The approval for the third and largest Housing Project is a 200bed Navigation Center next to interstate 280 that remains revoked. So does federal approval for major homeless projects in la and sacramento. The very people, the ones that are beating us over the head are saying you are not doing nearly enough to clean up the homeless problem and they are denying us the ability to go forward with our project. Darrell steinberg says it has caused months of delays even with the high list intensifying. All we wanted to is bring people who are homeless inside for safety and for health and to reduce the homeless problem in our city. He says disregarding washington could have serious consequences. In one letter, the Highway Administration warns it may take any action deemed appropriate, including withholding federal aid highway funding if the state fails to comply with federal requirements.
