We have more from danya bacchus. Reporter good morning. The destruction is staggering. Officials here in Fresno County say more than 300 structures have been wiped out by the creek fire. The fires have been moving so quickly, and theres so many that theyre overrunning crews throughout states here in the west. More than a million acres in the west ravaged and scorched. So far in a fire season that is not even half over and taking a tragic toll. The magnitude of which is still unknown. There are early reports from our state police that there are dozens of missing persons related to the fires. Reporter oregons Governor Kate Brown is pointing to the towns called talent and phoenix where searchers are looking for the missing. Smoke from oregons three major fires is unimaginably widespread. Its worst air quality in the world is choking the pacific coastline. Seattles skyline to the north, San Francisco more than 800 miles to the south, and then to los angeles. The scenes and sickening air underscore for many that the climate is in crisis. Washingtons governor, jay inslee i think we have to start thinking theyre more climate fires. Thats what creates the conditions that makes them so explosive. This is a climate emergency. This is real. And its happening. This is the perfect storm. Reporter californias governor, gavin newsom, toured destruction north of sacramento where more than a quarter million acres burned in a national forest. Oregon officials are now saying they are preparing for a mass fatality incident, saying there is a possibility that they will not have enough resources to handle the dead. Dana . Danya, those pictures look like an on, apocalyptic scene of a movie. Satellite imagery shows the smoke swirling more than a thousand miles into the pacific. The weather is a big factor in the wildfires. So for more on that, we turn to meteorologist jeff berardelli. Jeff, good morning. What can you tell us . Well, as you can see by looking at that satellite, it is just immense. These fires are huge. The smoke is suffocating. It is a big deal. Just to show that everythings connected, look at hue that smoke is swirl how that smoke is swirling into the pacific ocean, straight into the storm system which could deliver a little bit of muchneeded rain to the Pacific Northwest as we head into early this week. The smoke has been heading south or kind of confined along the coast. Thats going to change. The winds will switch direction, pushing everything north northeast across the Northern Tier of states. Lets talk about the western weather over the next couple of days. Its going to be warm. It will be dry. Not as hot as it was. Theres a little good news look to the storm to the west across the pacific ocean. That is going to be moving east. The good news is it will deliver a little rain to the coastal areas of oregon and washington especially. The bad news is the breeze is going to pick up, and that rain is not going to go very far inland have a lot of fires are. Switching gears, we have another tropical depression, right on top of extreme south florida right now near miami. Its going to deliver a lot of heavy rain to the keys during the day. As it heads out into the gulf of mexico over the next couple of days, it is going to strengthen, becoming Tropical Storm sally. Maybe even a lowend hurricane making landfall as early as late monday into tuesday along the northern gulf coast. So get ready for the potential for a lowend hurricane for places like pensacola, mobile, biloxi, and new orleans. All right. Thank you. Youre welcome. Reporter while admitting in a march interview with Journalist Bob Woodward for his book rage that he publicly downplayed it. I still like playing it down because i dont want to create a panic. There were times when i was out there telling the American Public how difficult this is, how were having a really sir serious problem and the president was saying its going to disappear. Not the case. Reporter despite the pushback, President Trump denied and said he lied because he didnt want to incite a national panic. Now airport officials in nevada are standing firm, rejecting the president s plans for a hangar rally there, citing a 50 mass gathering because of the pandemic. We sanitized the bus morning before we leave reporter there are signs that many are still too concerned to even begin a return to normal. On this school bus in plainview, new york, there are typically 40 students. On friday, there were only five. The reason why i think these buses arent really filling up with all the kids basically parents are scared. You know, they really dont want to send their kids to a situation that they dont know whats going to happen. Reporter Florida State universitys normally packed football stadium will be at 25 capacity today. Thats still 20,000 screaming fans when the team kicks off against georgia tech. But the tradition of tailorgating will be put on hold. Tailgating will be put on hold. Seems overkill to me. Reporter in albany, new york, a rash of positive cases amongst athletes plo prompted the school to suspend all fall sports and the School President to warn that campus could be shut down.
