Too soon to tell of course, still dark out but lets check in with mary lee and well have to wait to see what the sun reveals this morning, mary. Thats right len and michelle. We are still dealing with the smoke although things are not quite the same as yesterday. And the winds aloft a little bit of a wind direction. So not exactly the same as yesterday. But still were looking at those smoky skies and unhealthy air quality and you can see current air quality conditions all of the red dots and that does indicate unhealthy air this morning. As we start off our day. Were now going a record 24 days in a row with a spare the air alert for the bay area. This is our Mount Hamilton camerausuase something but its just so smoky this morning. Looking at that spare the air alert that has been extended today and into tomorrow, and as we head through our day because of that smoke, temperatures much cooler. Of course it was a cool day yesterday. And we are looking at temperatures well below average for this time of year. Mid 60s in San Francisco and upper 60s in oakland and mid 70s in san jose and upper 70s for concord. Well talk about the Science Behind our orange skies yet and what you can expect as we head through the week into next week coming up in just a few minutes. Good morning, im Gianna Franco in the traffic center. And as we take a look at the freeways right now we have a busy start already along the nimitz freeway. Road work once again blocking lanes both directions this time you have got delays north and southbound in oakland right around 23rd. To about 29th. Theyre hoping to have things wrapped up by 6 00 in the morning but like yesterday, it was late running so we had delays well into the 6 00 hour. Right now a backup through there into downtown oakland and northbound 880 also seeing some slow and go conditions there as well. Keep a close eye on that and also watching that traffic in the Altamont Pass. Already getting busy this morning. Coming out of tracy into the Altamont Pass area. And just a headsup your drive times still in the green though so thats good news, 27 minutes 205 over to 680. Thats a look at your morning drive, anne . Im anne makovec at the live news desk. Hes smart. Hes a good kid. Hes athletic. I cant get ahold of him. Nobody can find him. I love you. Please call me and let mom know where you are at. Unfortunately, that is a story that a lot of families are dealing with right now after these evacuations. This is a second fire were keeping an eye on in El Dorado County forcing evacuations in two counties. The fork fire burned 2500 acres and 0 containment and it started yesterday and there are evacuations in place in parts of el dorado and placer counties with about 600 people. Those are the communities of Stumpy Meadows and quinn tech and volcanoville. The smoke from these fires again, whats causing the orange skies that we have seen here in the bay area. So were going to keep an eye on all of it. Back to you, len. And thank you. The willow fire in yuba county forced thous to evacuate and about 1300 acres have burned destroying several structures and fires and cal fire says crews are cutting through several smoldering trees and also doing structure defense making sure homes near hot spots are protected. In southern california, new evacuations were ordered with a human caused wildfire in San Bernardino county. Still not even 20 contained. Fueled in part by strong winds. More than 470,000 acres have burned with at least five towns substantially gone. Officials are calling for mass evacuations. Plenty of folks seeing the eerie orange sky from wildfire smoke over the bay area is giving them anxiety. When the sun rose behind a heavy layer of smoke and fog, the creepy orange sky made a strong impression. Eyepopping images soon took over social media. Weve all seen them. People shared they felt unsettled and distracted and even anxious. Ominous and bleak. Its apocalyptic. Just kind of feels like the sky is falling. Pretty healthy reaction. We are wired to have what is this reaction to something that is potentially dangerous and especially something thats very new. And despite the poor air quality yesterday, outdoor gyms and Fitness Centers reopened. Some places like fitness sf in sew ma are now taking reservations online. Indoor gyms are expected today reopen by the end of the month. And they will be restricted to oneonone personal training sessions or individual gym sessions. All right, lets get a check on weather and mary, yesterday, we were talking nonstop about these orange skies. Are we going see something similar today . Well, you know, our atmosphere and the conditions not quite exactly like yesterday. But we are still dealing with the smoke and we are still dealing with unhealthy air. And that smoke just really trapped over the bay area. So i want to show you first of all our air quality conditions. And a lot of locations waking up to unhealthy air this morning. So looking at the peninsula, unhealthy air for redwood city and for sensitive groups for the south bay in san jose. Looking at unhealthy air for the trivalley and east bay and you can see the red dots for concord and walnut creek and oakland as well as for san looking at some unhealthy air this morning. Even catching some purple dots indicating some very unhealthy air up through lark spur and unhealthy and then up through the north bay from petaluma, santa rosa and for windsor this morning. So because of that, we have a spare the air alert that remains in effect. A record 24 days in a row with the spare the air alert for the bay area. Heres a live look with our south bay san jose camera. You can see that smoky start to our day and temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. Now lets talk about the reason why we had those orange skies all day yesterday. So we have these massive wildfires burning around us. About 150 miles away. But smoke from wildfires can actually rise thousands of feet up into our atmosphere. And then travel hundreds of miles away and thats exactly what happened. We have those strong winds aloft offshore so those northerly winds transported that smoke into the bay area. Now you might be wondering about those orange skies. Its what we call raley scattering. Its all because of depth and density of the smoke particles in the atmosphere. They can actually scatter the light and that actually absorbs the blue light and what you have left are those orange and red colors that you see. So thats why we had that perpetual sunset yesterday because of ral eye scattering. Now lets talk about the reason why we didnt smell the smoke in the air quality wasnt quite as bad as yesterday. Its all because of that marine layer. We have that ocean breeze and that is why we didnt smell the smoke and that marine layer actually suspended the smoke particles up in the higher levels of the atmosphere. So thats why we saw that orange filter in the sky. Lets talk about what you can expect for today. Still looking at the upper level still sending some smoke but were going to see the winds take a little bit of a turn aloft. So maybe not quite like yesterday, but still dealing with a lot of smoke in our atmosphere. Looking at the possibility of less smoke for the weekend with the stronger ocean breeze kicking in. Daytime highs of course because of that smoke, cooler. So ms ina cla and low 80s for morgan hill and around the bay, mid 60s in San Francisco and upper 60s in oakland. And low 70s for the north bay. So heres that extended forecast and what you can expect. As we are looking at more of that onshore flow likely as we head through the weekend. That should help a little bit with our air quality and then tracking another weather system for next week. That could bring some rain up in oregon as well as far northern california. Now lets check in with gianna for a look at traffic this morning. Thanks mary. Taking a look at the roadways right now. Weve got late running road work or i should say road work along the nimitz freeway. Not late yet. Should be wrapping up by 6 00 this morning but yesterday it went well into the 6 00 hour. We had delays on 880 for some time a lot of red showing up on the sensors south 880 working your way towards 23rd and 29th. Traffic is definitely slow on the southbound side. The good news is on the northbound side, we did have road work there as well looks like thats now back at the limit. Were clocking in some nice speeds going through there but definitely slow southbound. If you want to use 580 through oakland, that might work a bit better this morning for your commute. Another portion of 580 though where we are seeing some slow speeds is route ugh e altamoforcommu getting ready to head out the door you will see some brake lights starting out of tracy westbound right around Mountain House and extends all the way as you work your way into the Altamont Pass, just about north flynn thats where the brake lights kind of end. Little slow as well as you get on the 680 connector. Drive times now in the yellow. 32 minutes, 205 over to 680. And as we head to get a quick look at the golden gate bridge, right now drive times are okay. But theres limited visibility as you
