And we are continuing to follow the investigation into a deadly crash in walnut creek last night. At least three people died in this crash. It was on 680 north and the north main exit. For some reason, the vehicle left the freeway, hitting a tree and bursting into flames. It happened just before 11 00 when they put the fire out they found the remains of at least three people in the wreckage. Investigators were there on scene for several hours this morning before they towed away that vehicle. It was headed to the Coroners Office where the investigation continues. This morning, on our fire watch, thousands of crews are fighting some of the largest blazes in state history. More than 1200 square miles have burned in the bay area alone. Thats roughly the size of rhode island. And its not even the peak of of fire season yet. Happening today, National Guard troops will arrive to help at the front lines of the lnu complex burning in the north bay. The fire has killed five people and burned about 1,000 buildings. This morning, its 27 contained. But good news, evacuation warnings have been lifted for the city of healdsburg. More help is also coming to the incident command post. Cal fire says they have deployed the california c conservation corps and there are now more than 2100 firefighters battling the complex. Thanks to relief crews from all over. Originally in the incident resources were definitely stretched thin. Firefighweworking 72 to 96aight. Siificant number of sign and firefighters have the shift on and shift off. Scheduled here to receive 12 National Guard hand crews with roughly 250 people assigned to the hand crews. Also getting some help from the weather. The temperatures overnight cooled down and humidity was high. The scu complex east of san jose has overtaken the lnu as the second largest fire in state history. But crews are gaining ground. At last check the fire is 20 contained and evacuation warnings have been lifted in fremont and morgan hill. Fire crews are focusing their efforts on protecting the heavily Populated Areas along the fires western and northern fronts. Farther into the fire zone, a close call atop mount hamilton. The flames narrowly spared the historic lick observatory. However its still unclear if theres any unseen damage from all the heat. And to the west, in the santa cruz mountains, cal fire says 77,000 people have evacuated from san mateo and santa cruz counties and this morning, seven people are still missing. The czu complex is now 19 contained. Thats up from 17 yesterday afternoon and while the fire grew by only less than 800 th map shows the area between Boulder Creek and bonny doon just west of ben low man. The darker dot there is represent homes that have been destroyed. Evacuation orders remain in effect in marin county. The woodward fire burned about 3,000 acres and firefighters are especially concerned about the terrain and conditions in the northeastern section of the fire. Two people are dead and a third injured in kenosha in a shooting just before midnight. His family says that he is paralyzed from the waist down. She went on to describe how he was a good listener and gave advice she said quote the father i know and love is a good person. I feel like maybe he was good to his family members. Back in the bay area, and back to school. The San Jose Unified School district has been scrambling to close a gap in attendance and technical kinks impacting online learning. When anne darling elementary opened the new school year with online instruction, nearly a third of its students simply did not show up. And those who did, found themselves butting heads with equipment issues and spotty wi fi connections. So we had some struggles in the beginning. With equipment that was provided. One of the devices that we had actually had a to. The district says it has already handed out more than 19,000 laptops and tablets and more than 5,000 wifi hot spots. We can have a student who lives in a 2 million houseless than a mile away from a student who doesnt know where theyre going to sleep that night. So traffic is building and it went from 45 minute drive time to 69 mine 205 over to 680 as you head west of there over to 680. So again its right around grant line and lanes are blocked there. And you are going to see a bit of backup in that area. So its definitely slow and go. You can stick with the alternates or side streets if you can in the meantime. But no word yet how long those lanes will be locked but that big rig fire still pretty active as you head through there. Another trouble spot on south 680 right before koopman road. The right lane is blocked for an accident. Chp and crews are on scene for this. An area where there has been ongoing construction as well. So thats kind of making matters worse. You have got a backup at least over two and a half, maybe three miles at this point. So pretty significant as you head into the sunol grade this morning. It will rapidly intensify into a category 4 storm before making landfall late tonight. So overnight, making landfall across the texas louisiana coast as a major category 3 storm with winds over 110 miles per hour. Extreme winds and flash flooding for the area and life threatening storm surge. Likely a devastating hurricane for the gulf coast. So watching that closely. Looking at moderate air quality from concord and walnut creek and danville as well as around the bay. Good to moderate from stance to oakland but north bay, we have that unhealthy air closer to the lnu lightning complex fire. So novato, san rafael dealing with unhealthy air as well as fairfield. Looking at smoke and haze and that could help to mix out at least some of the smoke. But at least higher relative humidity values that should help firefighters a bit. Through the day, westerly winds 5, 10, 15. Up to 20 miles per hour. So for the south bay, looking at 84 in santa clara and san jose. For the east bay topping out at 89 for concord and pleasant hill. It is finally some good news for firefighters here in Sonoma County. They are expecting reinforcements and they are ready for them. You can see theyve got everything set up here the fairground for the National Guard. They can finally get some sleep. Now after a week of running thin or more, National Guard members are arriving to provide help for exhausted and overworked firefighters. Some troops have already arrived and in fact yesterday, but more of them are going to be arriving today. In fact, therell be about 26 in all. Now unlike previous fires up here they wont be guarding evacuation zones. Instead, theyll actually be putting out fires. Theyre not trained firefighters and of course theyre not going to be in the more dangerous areas like to the fire fight. But they will be out in the field. According to cal fire, theyre going to be therina support mission, being used for mop up situations and away from the front lines and again more fire resources are also set to arrive soon. This is that area westbound 580 another grant line and you can see there as the car travels by the flames and smoke just coming from underneath the annd tracy heading into the Altamont Pass. So give yourself a few extra minutes this morning. You can see traffic is backed up well into tracy. Beyond 11th street. 70 minute drive time from the rtto68 line affic ea a lot. Because everything is actually moving at the limit. Just all that stuff before that is causing the drive time thats 70 minutes. Altamont pass road although that might be getting busier as well as folks utilize that as an alternate route. Very tough ride in the Altamont Pass because of that rig big trailer that caught fire. And fire crews still on scene in that right lane. They say about 6 30 will likely see the reopening of that right lane. I want to show you trouble spot here, this is south 680 as you head into the sunol grade. But look at that damage is done. It is a slow ride as you work south 680 headed through there. On the flip side, northbound 680 just as you come out of fremont, we have some late running road work causing a bit of backup there as well. So traffic is sluggish and 84 road also seeing some brake lights also. If you want to use that connect to 680 a slow and go ride through there as well. Thats a look at the morninsome ongoing wildfires. Thats right. Spare the air alert in effect today and now extended through friday. Not a lot of relief here. Just so many of those massive wildfires burning in our region just bringing all the smoke and unhealthy air for us. Heres a live look with our san jose camera. Looking at mineta airport. San jose right now at 63 degrees and looking at 62 in concord and oakland at 57. 61 in livermore and mid 50s in San Francisco. And 53 for santa rosa. Its a foggy start along the coast and right around the bay. This morning. We are looking at that smoke and haze inland for sure. Near average daytime highs as we head through the afternoon. And again, that spare the no so letscheck current air quality conditions. It is a little bit better compared to yesterday morning at this time. Thankfully so. So some improvement here as we start off our day. So lets zoom in. First for the peninsula, and the south bay, you can see those ye modeair quality for redwood city and Mountain View to san jose. And milpitas. Thats some good news there. As we look to the rest of the east bay, and r the tri valley, moderate air quality. As we look to concord, walnut creek, danville, moderate air quality for you as well. Around the bay, good to moderate for San Francisco and for oakland. But up to our north, still dealing with unhealthy air, you can see those red and purple dots that indatesindicates that unhealr. A libi the lnu complex fires dealing with that unhealthy air and smoke. Now we are looking at the smoky skies that upper level winds bringing that smoke and ash from the lnu complex fires south and that heat dome kind of trapping the smoke and ash over the bay area. So as we head through the afternoon, thankfully with that sea breeze kicking in, it will help to mix out at least some of the air and improve the air quality but still we will be dealing with those hazy and smoky skies. So near normal daytime highs. And that smoke will remain though as we head through the next few days and possibly even beyond that. Unfortunately, so. Looking at 84 in san jose as well as for santa clara this afternoon. As we head to the east, upper 80s for concord as well as for pleasant hill. Around the bay, upper 60s to low 70s. And looking at the upper 70s to low to mid80s for the north bay. So looking at that smoke for tomorrow, friday, temperatures will be warming up a bit. Fire crews were on scene but they managed to get the fire out and everything is now over to the right shoulder. However, look at the backup. Its just a line of red and it is slow and go out of tracy and all the way back from beyond 11th street at this point. 580 patterton pass thats as far back as the delays are through there.
