7 commercial vacancy rate. 7 store front vacancy rate in San Francisco. That 7 skyrocketed to over 50 . Walnut closed. So this is where all the bands sit. Which rents touring vans to bands has seen his business fall off a cliff. Ive been able to make up little bit of what we lost by catering to a different market. But most of our business has collapsed. Our key demographic was the music industry. You know, were running about 30 of where we were last year. At the protests, Business Owners were asking for openings not to be based on state guidelines but on a case by case basis. Everything associated with the pandemic, things have not gotten easier to do business in San Francisco. Folks dont feel like they have the support they need from elected officials from the federal, state, or local level. Were getting really close here. The margins are very thin for some of these businesses, andrea. Where does San Francisco need to be for these businesses to reopen . Is it the mayor . Is it the governor . Are we even close . Ken, this all comes down to the states monitoring list. San francisco, we thought last week was going to jump off of that monitoring list. Because the number of covid cases had gone down. But we did not jump off the monitoring list. So until that happens, we are kind of stuck in the status quo of we have a few things open. We have Outdoor Dining but Services Like gyms and hair salons have not been given the green light yet in that phased reopening due to the coronavirus pandemic. Its a mess for sure. Andrea reporting live. A rough start to the school year for many here in the bay area. Now weeks in, have the technical kinks been smoothed out a bit . Kpix 5s deven on whether the Digital Divide improved in san jose. When they opened the new school year with online instruction, nearly 1 3 of its students didnt show up. And those who did found themselves bedeviled by technical issues. We had struggles in the beginning with equipment that was provided. One of the devices that we had actually had a hard time logging on to the system. They recalled he was eventually able to get technical issues ironed out for his daughter ava and son aaron. But teachers say consistently working wifi, laptops and software remain obstacles. I have a couple students who on a daily basis, sometimes their video isnt fully functioning. Theyre present. And i can talk with them through the video conference, but sometimes their video wont work. A spokesperson for san jose unified says they handed out 19,000 laptops and tablets, and 5,000 wifi hot spots but equipment alone wont bridge the achievement gap which is pronounced between students at wealthier and poorer schools. We have been able to reduce the inequities over the last couple weeks due to the efforts of our school staff. But theres still going to be those persistent gaps. The staff at in darling elementary boosted their attendance numbers from 70 to 90 last week. But the disparities teachers say dont always play out from one schoolie the next. Sometimes theyre apparent within a single classroom. We can have a student who lives in a 2 milliondollar house. Less than a mile away from a student who doesnt know where theyre going to sleep that night. And to try to make things equitable for all of those students, i dont know that its possible. So deven, you mentioned at the beginning of your story that 1 3 of the kids in some schools didnt show up on the first day. How much improvement have they made in terms of attendance. I want to clarify g. N l, but yoof the poorer performing schools, it was as low as 67 on day one for some schools. The lowest performing now is 78 . So the numbers are better. But theres still room for improvement. Absolutely. All right, deven, thank you. Well, the latest updates on each Bay Area School district is available on our website, just search kpix. Com backtoschool2020. Californias coronavirus numbers are trending in the right direction. 4400 new cases were just added. But the Health Director says hospitalizations have dropped about 19 . And icu cases fell 18 over the past two weeks. We made a lot of gains in the past many weeks as a state. And we knew wildfires would stretch us and test us again. And we put these precautions in place to make sure were prepared. All right, to the fire watch right now, and three major complexes still burning across the bay area. Now cover a combined area nearly seven times larger than the city of san jose. But crews are gaining ground. That is the good news. Double digit containment numbers on all three of these. Hundreds of homes could be in the path of a fire in marin county. The woodward fire is now burning nearly 3,000acres. Firefighters there are worried that it could become destructive if it crosses a certain path. Kpix 5s Wilson Walker is live where residents are preparing to get out if they have to. Wilson . Yeah, we showed you those folks making preparations earlier at 5 00. We have since spoken with firefighters. And i want to show you a little video that weve taken in the last hour, helicopters out here. Were about 15 minutes away from the Bear Valley Visitor Center into the park. You can see helicopters attacking a fire on a ridge over there. They also had planes out today. Which is good news, and even better yet, theyve had the marine layer helping out. This is a fire that provided a scare yesterday. It jumped a couple lines and caused the new evacuation orders. But today was a much better day. Here is Northern Rockies fire section chief. Excuse me. Section chief. Mike granger. So what we try to do is knock the intensity of the fire down. With those water drops. We call them super scoopers. It works quite well when we can penetrate the canopy. We got a lot of timber here. Sometimes thats hard to do with water coming from the air. But that super scooper does a good job of that. Better day today than yesterday over all does that make you more confident . Oh yes, never too confident on these fires like this. But today was a better day than yesterday. Sort of echos the sentiment that we heard in santa cruz yesterday for example. Just started adding up a couple good days, you can see the over all confidence level starting to build. So a much better day in marin county. And thats certainly good news for the folks in point rea station. A little on edge today, live in point rea. Kpix 5. The woodward fire first aired on cbsn bay area. You can get all live events streamed for free on your favorite devices. In the santa cruz mountains, favorable weather conditions are helping fire crews gain ground on the czu complex. Its now 17 contained. And evacuation warnings have been lifted in western santa clara county. And in Sonoma County, all evacuation warnings have been lifted for city of heelsburg where the lnu complex is 27 contained. Taking a live look now from the top of the sales force tower. Still looking a little hazy off in the distance. Even here along the coast. Our chief meteorologist paul hagan joins us now with the bay area air quality on everyones mind. A little fog. A little smoke. Yeah, the kind of mixing together. Thats the case the rest of the night. This was a bad situation, Sonoma County helicopter moved in and picked off two firefighters trapped by rapidly approaching flames. New at 6 00, kpix 5s don ford on why the Helicopter Program itself may need a rescue. The Sonoma County sheriff rescue helicopter has been saving lives for 50 years. Now the program may be in trouble. The sheriffs helicopter has been a lifeline for the county. Performing 900 missions a year. The modern version is called henry one. New a series budget cut is coming and the department is losing 14 m. Henry one is about a 2. 2 million project that we spend every year. So its certainly a project that were looking at very carefully and closely. And its certainly at risk at this point. Budget cuts or not. This Program Saved lives all across sonomas 1600 square miles. Including this dramatic rescue of two firefighters trapped oen a ridge surrounded by fire. Flight officer chris loss dangled under henry one. I would be lying if i said that didnt make me feel as if the butterflies were right there. Through the darkness with flames bearing down on the men. They quickly attached themselves and lifted out of harms way. Me and paul my pilot that night. We have to do our jobs perfectly. And we have to get them. Theres no second try. Theres no second chance. We have to get them. Everyone saved. Henry one chased bad guys, followed pursuits, and most importantly, rescued countless folks all along rugged sonoma coastline. Beaches, cliffs, mountain tops, technically difficult things that only a trained crew in a helicopter can do. My hope is that our community will see the value of the helicopter. Is it a costly program . Yes. But it absolutely saves lives everyday. There are tough decisions ahead. In Sonoma County, don ford, kpix 5. Unbelievable paul what these firefighters can do. Theres a great graphic going around twitter right now that shows a picture of firefighters and underneath it says golden state warriors. And its so true. How heroic they are. But lets take a quick look at the conditions right now for these firefighters. Theyre going to have their work cut out for them still. Mother nature has been in a cooperative move with the marine layer spreading inland. The heat dome to the east relaxed a little bit. Temperatures were near average today. That helps fire crews out. It still keeps the smoke trapped in place. But the proximity of a system offshore has helped the afternoon breeze to kick in. As long as its a consistent direction the fire crews can deal with that. And it helps to improve the air quality as i showed you during the first new segmentful right now were seeing fog here. Low cloud cover on the satellite perspective. But what youre not seeing is as much smoke. Think back to a week ago when the fires were really raging you could sediok esotg aroundthe area. Were not seeing that as much any more. They spread out so much. And also the smoke is thinner. That does improve the air quality slightly. Theres more ground to cover obviously. Relative humidity levels wont be as high as they were today. But in the 20 to 30 range. Thats okay for late august. The winds pick up tomorrow as well. As long as theyre a consistent direction. Which they will be. The fire crews can account for that. It just flows through the gaps and the terrain along the coast and spreads out into the valley. Well see wins gusting 20 to 30 miles an hour near the coast. Is a 15a to 20 miles an hour inland wednesday afternoon. The marine layer spreading across the bay. Theres the fog creeping toward the bay bridge. 71 degrees on the east side of the bay. Mid 70s san jose and santa rosa. Low to mid 80s in livermore and concord. Well drop back to the upper 50s and low 60s early tomorrow morning. Temperatures drop. Humidity goes up. This is when fire crews have a chance to get a handle on things. Another day of near average temperatures tomorrow. Within 3 degrees on either side of whats normal for this time of the year, 60s along the coast. Lower half of the 60s there. Upper 70s to 80s. Hottest temperatures t red of the diablo range. Low 90s. Not bad for august. Mostly upper 80s for the tri valley. With upper 60s. And low 70s around the bay. Hotter weather farther north where theyre still dealing with fires of their own, lake and mendocino counties, hire temperatures a bit hotter in the low 90s. The pollen count decided to climb as well. Grass and element. Medium high category into the first half of the weekend. So we can contend with that as well. The sevenday forecast over that shoulder shows temperatures in the neighborhood of 90 degrees inland into the weekend with right around 71 degrees around the bay. 60s near the coast. Another update at 10 00, denis . You can appreciate this. A very scientific weather test. Its windy tonight at oracle. A lot of home runs. Giants and welcome back to candle stick park.
