Other highprofile speakers include the clintons, the obamas, and musical performances from john legend and billie eilish. For cbs this Morning Saturday, ed okeefe, washington. Here to break down the politics of the week is Gabe Debenedetti, National Correspondent for new york magazine. He is in charlottesville, virginia. Well get to that Virtual Convention in a minute. Lets start with the pick of Kamala Harris as the Vice President ial candidate along with joe biden. How is this being viewed right now by the party . Well, most people in the party are pretty excited about this. There was a lot of apprehension because, of course, joe biden did take quite a long time to make his choice. In the end it was in line with traditional timing before the convention. Harris, of course, is a historic pick as the first black and first Asian American person on a ticket. The first black woman i should say on a president ial ticket. While shes a fairly liberal senator, shes in the center of the party in many ways. I think people were excited to see her added. One of the things the campaign has started focusing on is the handling of the Coronavirus Response from the Trump Administration. How effective has that been so far . Well, if you look at the polling numbers, the biden team and a lot of democrats would say very effective in the sense that joe biden does intend to have a fairly large lead here. It isnt because hes been doing that much work really on that messaging, its really because of the president s handling itself. This is the overwhelming crisis thats everyone is dealing with right now, whether you look at it as a Health Care Issue or as an economic issue. These are all wrapped together. Of course, when we have tens of millions out of work, hundreds of thousands dying and many more sick, its an inescapable thing. Naturally the election is going to be then viewed as a referendum on the president. Michelle miller here. The Democratic NationalConvention Starts, albeit virtually, on monday. What do you expect the messaging will look like . Well, joe bidens messaging has been fairly consistent from start to finish when he launched his campaign. He always said this is the battle for the soul of the nation. And its not very subtle. Of course, hes saying we have to take the country back from donald trump in his words. One thing well see is a wide spectrum of speakers. John kasich, former republican of ohio, who ran against donald trump, speaking on the same night as Bernie Sanders whos as progressive as they come. What the messaging is going to be is you dont have to be a liberal, you dont have a progressive to vote for joe biden. You have to just not like whats going on right now. Theres going to be a lot of messaging about the restoration of the soul of the nation in joe bidens words. Yeah, messaging on range there. Its becoming increasingly clear that this election will be unlike any other. Mailin ballots and the Postal Service itself are at the center of this political debate. Yeah. Will trumps hardball approach there have political repercussions . Yeah. I mean, its more of a voting issue than a political issue. Obviously voters dont like to hear that the Postal Service is having issues because people do rely on the Postal Service. What a lot of folks are very worried about is because of this pandemic theres going to be massive reliance on mailin ballots. If the Postal Service is underfunded as it currently is, it certainly looks like a lot of peoples votes may not be counted, or there might be big issues with that. Theres a lot of apprehension in the democratic side in particular, and now that President Trump has essentially come out and said that one of the reasons hes underfunding the Postal Service is because of mailin ballots, theres a real push in the democratic side to make sure that every ballot can be safely counted in enough time. And what looks very likely now is we may not know its unlikely that we will know the full extent of the vote in a lot of these swing states on election night. We should be preparing for an election week, especially if the Postal Service continues to have all these issues and doesnt get more funding. Okay, Gabe Debenedetti from new york magazine. Thank you so much. Appreciate it. Thank you. Stay with cbs news as we bring you live coverage of the Democratic National convention. It starts monday at 10 00, 9 00 central. Postal service sent letters to more than 40 states warning that it cannot guarantee that all ballots cast by mail for the november election will arrive in time to be counted. Needed funding for the agency died in failed negotiations over the most recent Coronavirus Relief package. And some even suggest the Postal Service is being deliberate deliberately sabotaged by President Trump who is promoting the unfounded claim that widespread mailin voting would lead to fraudulent results. For more on this, were joined now by michael waldman, president of the nonpartisan Brennan Center for justice at nyu school of law. Michael, welcome. Well begin right now asking this question experts are predicting there could be as many as 80 million mailin ballots inundated election offices in the next several months. And more than more than doubling the number returned in the 2016 election. Just how worrisome and how serious a warning is this from the u. S. Postal service . Well, because of the coronavirus, we all have to vote this year. Sometimes in new ways. And youre right, many more people will vote by mail than is usually the case, though already about one in four people vote in the United States by mail. But that means state officials and Election Officials have to get ready. That means voters need to get their ballots in early. And we need the post office to do its job and not to be sabotaged. Among those who suggested that theyre deliberately sabotaging the post office is President Trump himself who said the other day that he didnt want to fund if because then it would be able to deliver peoples ballots. I will tell you in the history of the country, no president has ever said anything remotely like that before. Okay, so michael, if the u. S. Postal service handled about 40 million ballots, mailin ballots in 2016, and 80 million are predicted this year, at the current level of funding, how many do you believe they can reliably handle . Well, they ought to be able to reliably handle the ballots because its only one ballot per person. But what theyre in the middle of doing is making changes to make it harder to deliver those ballots. As weve seen, theyre scooping up mailboxes all over the western United States, for example, which rely already on vote by mail, and there are all kind of changes being suddenly done at the post office. And you know, many of us dont have a view necessarily of whether these changes over the long run are the right or wrong thing. But they are deeply misguided and very suspicious coming at a moment when the president who appointed this new postmaster general is saying he wants to block it from delivering ballots to people. We all want can i ask for a moment how it differs from state to state, which states rely more on mailin balloting . Well, seven states, this is principally how they vote. Thats out in the west coast mostly. A lot of states have absentee balloting, and to be super clear, theres no difference between absence see ballots and mailin ballots. Theres a lot of states where you have the ability to do it, but its not been the case that people have needed to do it in such large numbers. And so what states need to do is to make sure people have the ability to get those absentee ballots, send out the applications early, let people start sending in the ballots early. And start counting early. The whole goal is to avoid chaos on election day so we can have a meaningful and free and fair and safe election. Michael, is there any way that the democrats can sorts of seize on the president s words here at this point and turn it around in this idea that the people that rely on the Postal Service the most right now, veterans, the elderly, people in rural communities, theyre the ones that need it . The president isnt funding it. Is it something they can seize on now . Well, in the last couple of days, youre right. It looks like the democrats have seen the political power in making this an issue. Theyre very alarmed about it, i think genuinely. I think they also see that this could back fire dramatically on President Trump. Already his unfounded claims of problems with mailin voting has led Republican Voters to pull back from using something this was never partisan before. Now Republican Voters, many of them are afraid to use mailin ballots because of what the president s been claiming. And its the case that the Postal Service has a very deep involvement in life in america. People rely on it for medication, veterans rely on it, elderly people rely on it. And i dont think people like the idea that theyre messing with the Postal Service to try to make it harder for people to exercise their core and basic right to vote. I could see it backfiring pretty hard on the president. All right. Michael waldman, we appreciate the insight. It seems like just what the doctor ordered a company in the u. S. The covid19 pandemic exposed major shortages in the nations drug and medical supply chains. A deal navarro brokered involving Eastman Kodak is now on hold over financial issues, but earlier in year he was key in awarding a contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars to a littleknown Virginia Company promising to revamp the way medicines are made and distributed. So what is this . This is our reporter the grand plan to streamline americas pharmaceutical industry was launched at virginia commonwealth universitys college of engineering in richmond. So these are some of reporter our tour begins with dr. Frank gupton. It goes into the tubes that are inside these heaters reporter he oversees this lab where chemists are working on new ways to manufacture medications. And so this is what is going to innovate this is part of it. Reporter flo is a company trying to bring back the pharmaceutical supply chain to the u. S. They went to india and china where labor costs were lower reporter two years ago his business partner, dr. Eric edwards, approached dr. Gupton with a goal to make affordable generic drugs here at home. I was already witnessing massive drug shortages that were plaguing this country. These are essential medicines and their ingredients. That really nagged me. It was a struggle. Reporter the market is immense. Americans fill the equivalent of 5. 8 billion 30day prescriptions in 2018 alone. In 2019, the food and Drug Administration estimated that 890 of active 80 of active pharmaceutical ingredients and 40 of finishish medications were manufactured overseas, mainly in china and india. This allows you to be able to run these processes reporter flos key process a method called continuous manufacturing. They say it will increase quality control, reduce the risk of counterfeit medications and provide transparency in labeling. Were creating an endtoend manufacturing structure and supply chain in the United States from precursor chemical to active ingredient, to finished drug into a vial or syringe. Reporter in the 1990s, American Companies began to rely on a manufacturing process that utilizes largescale equipment and cheap labor. This method thrives under relaxed environmental regulations often found overseas. The result a weakened system here at home. Is the supply chain broken . Not only is the american medical supply chain broken, the pricing and reimbursement system is broken. Reporter the broken system became apparent in march when the coronavirus pandemic depleted the National Stockpile of personal protective equipment and critical medications. Demand for these supplies was global, and it brought overseas imports to a halt. This made flos efforts not just relevant but critical. So what i have right now is like its a syringe filled with my starting material. Were going to take this and turn it into reporter developing a new drug typically costs more than 2. 5 billion and takes more than a decade. Flos founders say their method will reduce both time and expense. Its all going to be together, streamlining the supply chain, making sure that we have the highest quality that americans and patients deserve. Reporter flo is also looking to bridge the gap between underpriced generics and those higher priced drugs with the more limited market for children or for rare diseases. There was no profit in these medicines. Weve driven the pricing of some of these Generic Medicines into the ground. A bottle of fiji water at an airport costs more than a lifesaving vial of medication. Reporter edwards has been in the business for years and has faced some criticism. Caleo, the company he cofounded with his twin brother, then left seven years ago, came under congressional scrutiny after pricing for a popular overdose antidote rose by 600 in three years. The Company Authorized a cheaper and generic drug soon after. How do you meet that skepticism going into a relatively new company with these goals . I was not involved in any pricing decisions. And i was in charge of innovation. This is all about innovation and teamwork to try to fix a broken pharmaceutical pricing reimbursement and description system that has left a lot of these Generic Medicines out of reach for patients. Flos Partnership Includes virginia commonwealth universitys medicines for all institute which is backed in part by the bill and Melinda Gates foundation. And flo could get even more money from the Trump Administration right now, about 350 million. Their contract can be extended to more than 800 million over ten years. Dana . Really interesting. One of the worlds most important observatories that tries to solve some of the mysteries of the universe is trying to solve a mystery of its own. Why did a thick, steel cable suddenly snap, damaging a key instrument . The aracebo Radio Telescope in puerto rico is now silent as a result. Its been a backdrop for hollywood films like the 1997 scifi drama contact. Isnt she a beauty . It will do. And its where james bond stopped the villain in the climactic scene of golden eye. Puerto ricos aracebo object serve iter toy is more than just a schedule stealer. Its home to one of the largest Radio Telescopes, acting as a giant ear. It was forced to close after a cable supporting a metal platform above the telescope fell, tearing a 100footlong gash in the giant reflector dish. The cable didnt even break in the sense of a cable kind of snapping, but it just sort of slipped from its socket which is an even weirder condition. Were trying to get our Engineering Team to make assessments of that to understand the root cause. The telescope, located in the middle of a forest, listens for radio signals from galaxies near and far. Its contributed to numerous breakthroughs in astronomy and played a major role in the search for intelligent life, used by famed astronomer carl sagan to send an interstellar message. Now Radio Communication incoming and outgoing will be silent for a while. Observatory technicians have been working around the clock trying to get the telescope back on line, but it probably woebn be a quick fix. Were still trying to understand what caused the failure, making sure were structure touring the capabilities. Were not sure when that will happen. Reporter is was built in 1963 and has survived terrestrial hazards like hurricanes, tropical storms, and earthquakes. Since leaving the show in 2009 shes had other projects and started her own production company. Her biggest adventure was leaving california and finding a new life in a small town in upstate new york. Along for the ride, fellow actor and husband jeffrey dean morgan. It is a journey detailed in her new book the rural diaries, and i traveled up to rhineback, new york, to hear all about it. Im sitting here with my daughter. And were sewing some masks, so i thought wed take this opportunity to help people make m tonight masks. Regime actress Hilarie Burton morgan knows the influence there are so many people here for us, lets make some masks. Reporter she masked up when we sat down with her in upstate new york. I think if i sat here without a mask and on my social media, its mask, mask, mask, mask, mask, i would be a hypocrite. I try not to ask anyone to do something im not willing to do. And i have to walk the walk, you know. Reporter these days, burton and her husband, jeffrey dean morgan, walk the walk in duchess county. Can you give us a tour around the farm . Reporter thats where they say they found comfort thats hard to come by. Do you know what drew you to this place . You and jeff . Yeah. It was our childhood homes were destroyed. The small towns disappeared. The mom and pop shops disappeared. Everything got replaced by massive chains. When we found this community that was all mom and pop shops, it was so important to us that we preserved it and we honored it in a way that other people maybe saw the value in it. Reporter one of those shops is samuels, a candy store opened more than 25 years ago when owner ira gutner passed away suddenly in 2014, it was in danger of closing. There was a huge amount of panic, especially for my husband because he was out of the country. He was adamant like, you tell john do not close. Do not close. It can still overwhelm me. It was just really kind. Reporter john traver, whos worked at samuels since he was a teenager, was grieving and uncertain about the future. I was worried about paying for easter canty that wasnt paid for and other bills to have this person who relatively recently entered our life and said were going to protect this for you. It was special. Reporter burton and morgan put together a group that included their friends, Actor Paul Rudd and wife julie, to buy samuels. Once the deal was finalized, burton got to work. I really wanted to prove to the people in our community that we meant it. That like it was coming from a place of love, a place of humility. You know, im not afraid to clean out where the trash can is and like, you know reporter redo the bathrooms. And get on my hands and knees and make a big, dirty, dork of myself, if it means that youll trust me. Reporter the story of samuels is one of many burton shares in her memoir, the rural diari diaries. Published in the midst of the pandemic, she asked her fans buying the book to purchase signed copies from her local bookstore, oblong. Coowner Suzanna Herman says they sold more than 7,000 copies. We received a ppp, which was spectacular. When we were closed to the public, it was four months. Two months with ppp and two months with the book kept us paying our staff. Shes been our fairy godmothers tru truly. Reporter for burton, it was another way to support a community where she was able to find herself. I found so much selfworth in this community that i hadnt in work. And when id accomplished everything i said i was going to accomplish at a young age and still didnt really like myself, there was a problem. First of all, you dont know me. Reporter something she also tackles in the book, including alleged abuse during her acting career by One Tree Hill show runner mark schwan. Why open yourself in this book . Im in a position having walked away from hollywood, having walked away from the business in a way, where the repercussions for me are not the same as they are for other people. But we put out a letter, as the women of One Tree Hill, that was polite. And it largely got ignored. Once we started talking about the details of that harassment and abuse and trauma, then people started paying attention. But we still have yet to receive an apology, an acknowledgment from any person involved in that production. Reporter another trauma burton wrote openly about is the series of miscarriages before the births of her daughter, george. It blind sided me. Id already had a kid, you know. And secondary infertility was not something i had any notion of. So i was in a bad place and really looking to put my energy into something so i would stop thinking about myself. Reporter that something was a volunteer effort to renovate a Treatment Center for kids. Weve been spending more and more time with the kids throughout the renovations and our fundraisers. We spent Christmas Eve with them this last year. If youre going to put your time and energy into something, thats it. Reporter during the pandemic, the morgan ts have be putting their energy into timely discussions on their new amc series. What films, books, or documentaries can you recommend it was supposed to be dont worry about going out on friday nights, stay home with us. Lets all be safe together. We will not be silenced and then when george floyd died, not addressing that was irresponsible. So we brought on guests who could speak to it better than we could. We started having conversations about representation in our business. Reporter once again, walking the walk, using her celebrity to foster change on screen and in her own community. We are starting to work a new Organization Called rybeck responds. So many of the businesses in this town are on the verge of collapse because they didnt get the assistance. They dont have a fancy accountant to muscle through the paperwork. Rybeck responds is giving loans and grants, were trying to keep as many businesses in town afloat as possible. Reporter keep the town the way it is. You got to do the work. Yeah. Nothing comes easy. Thankfully we live in an area that really values this. And so even if rybeck can be a model for other towns, a roadmap, i would love to see every small town like this rehabilitated. And obviously i could not go there without bringing sweets back for all my look, these are chocolate covered espresso beans chocolate covered espresso beans. What is this, roasted, salted, bourbon pecans caramels. Everything is delicious. When you read the book, she talks so much about the candy. I literally was grabbing things that im like, wait, she wrote about that, she loves that. Here. Its an interesting read. The pledge about rehabilitate the message about rehabilitating a town and working together, thats so much a part of it especially with the group responds for sure. Are you jealous . Wheres mine . One of the great scenes in Robert Redfords river runs through it, based on the classic novella. Fly fishing is one of the most enduring and enchanting pursuits in the world. During the pandemic its finding legions of new followers. To explore there captivating world, we traveled to the birthplace of american fly fishing to spend time with a writer whos been on the water for more than 50 years, and the queen of american fly fishing whos been at it for more than 90. Pull off a little more line, jeff. Reporter imagine in this time of chaos and uncertainty, finding something that takes you away, that puts you back in touch with the timeless. Its why so many lately have discovered fly fishing. Oh strike. Reporter nice. When you find yourself doing something and you dont notice the passage of time, thats what fly fishing does to me. Puts me in like another state. Reporter Peter Kaminsky has devoted half a century to this sport. Both casting and writing about it. Wherever theres carnivorous fish, someone can catch them with a fly. Reporter fly fishing is different from bait fishing because the fly sits on the water. Its not food dropped underneath which can be far more challenging and rewarding. The George Jennifer aniston trace back to the roman empyro. But it was the english who put it on the map in the 1600s. Fly fishing started in sdwr e e new york in the 19th century. The king was lee wulf who brought it to series like abcs american sportsman. Lee died in a plane crash in 1991. But his wife, a master herself, is still going strong at age 94. For me, it was being in the outofdoors, the Natural World is kind of my church. My religion. Reporter joan wulf was first introduced to fishing in the 1930s. You remember it like it was yesterday. It determined my life basically. Reporter joan went on to win hr first professional competition at the age of 12 and set many mile sometimes for female fishers after that. For the past 30 years, shes been running the Fly Fishing School that she and her husband founded in the catskills. Casting is your passport to being a good fisherman. Youve got to be able to cast well and put the fly where it should go. Reporter what do you think youve come to appreciate or learn given this extraordinary time in the sport . For one thing, there were very few women who fished. So thats been the story of my life is trying to get women into the sport. And finally ive had to wait this long they are now in. Reporter joan was gracious enough to give us a lesson. We have a back cast, and we have a forward cast. Reporter yep. Im going to do just the forward cast now with this. Do you see that the rod is away from my wrist, and ive got a 90degree angle basically. Im going to pull it down in one piece from the shoulder. Just like that. Do that. Up and down. Just feel what youre no. Just go up and down, feel the shoulder. Jeff, were not doing a back cast. Reporter were not doing the back cast. Youre a hard pupil. Reporter thank you for your patience. It usually takes a couple days to get the hang of it. Try it again. Reporter when done right, there is not much better. There is a seduction to it. Very much so. When you watch a trout feeding and then you approach it and dont scare it and then you work on it for a while and get it to take your fly, its reporter a dance. Yeah, yeah. There fish puts on sudden bursts of speed, then stops, and comes in like a log. Reporter the ethos of most american fly fishing has long been catch and release. Eating what you catch tastes great, but done over and over, its not sustainable for fisheries. For many who spend time in these waters, just being here chancing and chasing, is enough. Right now, more people theres a craving to be outdoors. You bet. Reporter but its something that people can always return to, right . Absolutely. And the whole world has fly fishing in it. Oh, always in beautiful, clean water. Love it, right . You brought candy. I didnt bring fish a dish. Thats okay. What i love michelle did, now somebody else understands what its like to try to reel in jeff. Trying to teach jeff how to do something. Just relax. Oh that hurt. I want to say a shout out to our executive producer. One, my next assignment in the Great Outdoors where i learned something thats also relaxing. Im always out and about. Always pitching. Good stuff. I like that idea. Buy local. Not just from your area farms but from neighbors kitchens. Thats coming up next. Food freedom in our dish. For those of you without local news, cbs this Morning Saturday will return in a few minutes. For now, im Rylee Carlson with a look at some of the other sties were following. Many americans have missed out on live music this summer, but for some its more than finding other ways to enjoy themselves for the weekend. Michael george has the story. Reporter after five months of shutdowns, live music seems like a distant memory. Its been an even bigger loss for the musicians behind the instruments. 2020, its a wash. Its gone. Reporter tim rudeman is the lead singer of the Dexter Lake Club band. The weddings and parties they rely on to pay the bills are no longer an option. Everything weve had scheduled in 2020, which was a lot of dates, has either been postponed and rescheduled to 2021 and later. Reporter some bands members are on unemployment or looking for other jobs. The entire industry is in crisis. As hard as the financial part is we love play we do what we love, and were lucky for that. We cant do it right now. Reporter jazz violinist lenore falcon said the best she could do is play on line with local musicians. We finished and i started to cr cry and cry. I miss tuesday so much. Reporter shes hopes whenever the country comes back, the fans will, too. Musicians need their support more than ever. Maybe in the future people will be more appreciative of arts because right now they dont have much access to it. Id like to encourage people not to give up on the industry. Its our heart and soul. Reporter hoping that when we reopen, we dont take music for granted. Michael george, cbs news, new york. Dear california. We know these are challenging times. Rest assured, you are not alone. Weve all had to adapt. And with summer here, your energy bills might go up with rising temperatures. Together, we can save energy and money. Try closing your shades during the day. Setting your ac to 78 or higher. Or cooling off with a fan when you can. United we are always stronger. Stay well, california, and keep it golden. This morning on the dish, Food Production for the people. Farmers markets have proved to be invaluable during the pandemic by offering fresh food often in openair environments. And in one state, its becoming even easier to sell homemade locally sourced food thanks to a law passed five years ago. Janet shamlian has the story. Reporter in this gillette, wyoming, kitchen, the idea of getting government off his back comes down to Peanut Butter. How he makes it the salt and oil reporter how he packages it the particular peanuts im using roughs to about a pint. Reporter and then how he sells it. And im operating under wyoming food freedom act which allows me just to make it from the house to the consumer. Reporter addison doesnt need his jars inspected or weighed, and theyre not subject to any government oversight. He just delivers it to this coop where customers buy it directly. This would be eggs by local hand. And her and her sisters did all this yesterday. Reporter Brock Wallace is unofficially judge charge of the gillette farmers coop. Almost everything from the honey to jordan addisons Peanut Butter was made in someones kitchen or on a nearby farm. We have about 25 different local vendors in there. Some of them are pretty good size. Some of them sell 10 or 15 worth of product a week. Reporter the food freedom law allows people to sell directly to others without regulation. From salsa to sauerkraut and pastries to pickles. Even meat. Though its the one item that must be processed in a licensed facility. Right now we have nine beef at the butcher. Reporter wallace says there hasnt been a single case of illness tied to the local Food Movement since the law passed in 2015. We dont have to totally depend on the valley in california where the rail cars if the rail cars contaminated thousands are sick. If its secure, its one or two people. Hasnt happened. Reporter lynn newsom is delivering goats milk which she says helped in her husbands cancer recovery. Were just seeing what it can do. I want to help other people. And i mean, what better reason is there than that . Reporter since wyomings food freedom went into effect, north dakota, utah, and maine have followed with similar laws. Other states have loosened restrictions. Were not putting the Big Box Stores out of business yet. But were making a dent, and people are appreciating local foods. Reporter but whats made in wyoming has to stay local to keep the food and Drug Administration out, homemade food cant be sold on line. Judy leggett both works in the coop and buys groceries here. We have less issues because there is less sense of contamination because you dont law it for thousands of miles dont haul it for thousands of miles. You dont have 18 cultures handling it. This morning in our saturday sessions, Kathleen Edwards. Its a triumphant return for the canadian singer songwriter six years after she abruptly quit music and opened a coffee shop. Youll hear songs from her album in a moment. First, edwards talked with our Anthony Mason about her decision to walk away and what brought her back. With songs like back to me, Kathleen Edwards was one of the most acclaimed young songwriterwriters on the indy scene in the early 2000s. By 2012, her fourth album, vouch voyag voyager climbed to 39, her highest charting album yet. On the surface, it looked like you were riding pretty high. Yeah. But it it didnt feel that way. I just said i dont feel good about myself, and i dont feel good about the work ive done. So maybe i just need to take, you know, take a lefthand turn here. Then edwards did the unthinkable she walked away from music and went to get help. Were you relieved when you were diagnosed with clinical depression . Oh, yeah. I mean, it just suddenly gave a name to all the things i couldnt seem to overcome. Reporter the singer went home to canada, to the small town of stitzville, ontario, and opened a coffee shop, fittingly called quitters. Initially i thought, you know, coffee shops not a serious thing. Before you know it, youve been open for, you know, two years, you have over 20 employees, and it gave me a sense that i actually do Something Else besides writing music. And there was no point in those the first few years that you missed music . Not at all. I was thrilled to not have to pack my suitcase. I was thrilled to not have to put on makeup every day and get on stage and perform. I mean it was so nice to have Something Else to do. And so it went until last year when singer Marren Morris reached out and asked edwards to collaborate. You make me stronger im wanted for nothing she accepted the invitation, and something happened. I dipped my toe in the water and went, oh, remember that . That was really good. 39 years i been keeping my options open after eight years, edwards started writing again. The joy of making music returned, and a new album emerged even amidst the coronavirus. Are you a coffee shop owner who sings or a singer who owns a coffee shop . Im a singer who cant go on tour and play in a club, and im a coffee shop owner, and i cant let people come into my cafe. So im ei kind of chosen the two things professionally as a Small Business entrepreneur, that ive really chosen poorly for the covid crisis. Thats true. Now performing inside her coffee shop quitters in a section of ottawa, canada, from her album total freedom, its Kathleen Edwards with options open.
