Happening today, oakland teachers are winning the School District if they dont have a deal on Distance Learning by today, theyre going to make their own plan. Students i set to return in just over a week. So far it is unclear exactly what they will be returning to. The state requires district to provide 180 days of instruction with the length of those days based on grade level. When it hasnt specifically laid out is how much of the instruction must be done live and how much can be delivered through prerecorded content and paper packets. Right now the district is holding teachers to their regularly contracted workday of 375 to 390 minutes. The union wants to cut it down to 300 minutes across the board. Also proposing that teachers spend just an hour a day with their students for the first week and use the rest of the time to plot lesson plans for the rest of the year. A district spokesperson said while there is no hard deadline on a deal, the goal is to finalize an agreement before classes resume on august 10.
