She has been spending her adult life, have her adult life here at the Police Department, working on the Law Enforcement side, internally and now, she is the top cop. She says she is ready to take on this job. 10 months as interim police chief has given her a head start. She stepped in after a vote of noconfidence for the previous chief. Do you feel a lot of pressure . A lot of pressure. I am the first woman in the city, i am a woman of color so i have the community that received a tremendous amount of support. Reporter what is your definition of defunding the police . What does that mean to you, personally . So, you know, initially when i heard it, i thought, the mone somewhere else, and they dont want the Police Department. Now, as i understand it, what it means to me is that people are calling for services, to be provided with resources. Reporter she agrees social services need to be funded but she does not agree the money should come from the Police Department. I just dont have any more wiggle room in terms of what our budget is, and how we can provide just emergency services. Reporter her immediate goals within a maledominated field . My goal is to really work with the women in our department to make sure they are comfortable and feel included in everything within the department, which i have not always felt throughout my career, here. Reporter she alluded to a tight budget, they have already made cuts, as she said. Even today in the interview i said, so what is your typical day like . She said well, so to speak, today i am putting together presentation to present before the city council tonight about the police budget. Upon their request. And now, this fire, she told us a little bit about what her initial thoughts were, just on a day of complete disaster. D th i am not w what im insured for all the laws i have had in there. Because i lost i changed my insurance to pay less per month because we were not making good income. So, you know, tell me what kind of sign is that . You know . You want to be strong, but we need a break, you know . Reporter yes, you try to cut costs during the pandemic, you cut back on insurance, and now this. It is sort of an unimaginable turn of events for that one business. And then the other half handful that were involved, as you heard, three people lived above that catering business. They were not injured. Their home is a loss, three people, displaced. At least six businesses, destroy. No word yet on what has caused the fire but a great lesson in just how quickly a fire can get going and how hard it can be to stop it. The city has announced what it is calling Community Learning hubs, places kids can walk to for Remote Learning with Internet Access and adult supervision. A big difference between these learning hubs and a large school is just that, these are very small hubs. So we will have very small numbers of children within these facilities. Reporter the hubs are intended for high need kids living in Public Housing or hotels, homeless and foster youth, and english language learners. They are the children of working parents, who would otherwise be home. We need to make sure that families do not have to choose between working and taking care of their children. Reporter the allday program would provide daily meals, digital technology, and afterschool enrichment activities. 40 sites have been selected so far at rec centers, libraries, and local nonprofits. The city is looking for more, and eventually hopes to serve 5000 to 6000 students. But, will it be safe .
