While it hurts the heart of anyone who cares about equality, michelle, we know youve met him many times. Indeed, i have. Each time was memorable. You always felt like you were in the presence of greatness, kind strength mixed with that air of humility all his own. Of course, we begin with that news that came overnight. Congressman june lewis of georgia, one of the leading figures of the 1960s civil rights era, has died. He was 80 years old. Lewis was a protege of the reverend dr. Martin luther king jr. Together they challenged the segregated south. Lewis continued to fight for civil rights throughout his career. And last december he revealed he had stagefour pancreatic cancer and said he had never faced a battle like it. Lewis told cbs this morning last month he believed his health was improving. Ed okeefe shows how lewis was at the heart of black americas struggle for equality for more than six decades. We still have work to do. Reporter throughout his life he remained a living reminder of the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. When people tell me nothing has changed, i feel like saying come and walk in my shoes. I will show you. I will take you to these places. Reporter on capitol hill, lewis was one of the few lawmakers left universally admired on both sides of the aisle. In part for simple moments like it one last year at the height of the impeachment fight, lewis participated in a bipartisan tribute to retiring georgia senator johnny isaacson, a republican. Lewis ended his remarks with something rarely seen in washington anymore he crossed the house floor for a handshake and a hug between a democrat and a republican. [ applause ] in june he visited black lives matter plaza in washington. The civil rights icon stood on the spot of the new mural and said that it sends a mighty powerful and strong message to the rest of the world. Ed okeefe, cbs news, washington. Former president barack obama awarded john lewis the president ial medal of freedom in 2011. In a statement posted on media, mr. Obama writes, quote, he loved there country so that much he risked life and his blood so that it might live up to its promise. Through the decades, he not only gave all of himself to the cause of freedom and justice but inspired generations that followed to try to live up to his example. Reflecting on the moments before taking his own oath in 2009 he writes, quote, when i was lengthed president of the United States elected president of the United States i hugged him on the inauguration stand before i was sworn in and told him i was only there because of the sacrifices he made. The former president goes on to say, not many of us get to live to see our own legacy play out in such a meaningful, remarkable way. John lewis did. One of congressman lewis lastknown public appearances, as we mentioned, was at the black lives matter plaza in washington. Last month wearing a mask and using a cane, he stood tall on the bold yellow painted lettersment he was joined by washington mayor Muriel Bowser. Coanchor gayle king spoke to lewis just ten days after george floyd died at the hands of police in minneapolis. He expressed his feelings of seeing a new generation of activists speak out. Does this feel and look different to you . This feels and looks so different. It is so much more massive and all inclusive to see people from all over the world taking to the streets, to the roadways, to stand up, to speak up, to speak out. To do what i call getting in trouble. And with the sense of determination and commitment and dedication there will be no turning back. People now understand what the struggle was all about. Its another step down the very, very long road toward freedom, justice for all humankind. As he said, there will be no turning back. We are now joined by civil rights leader and former u. N. Ambassador andrew young. He helped draft the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and called john lewis a friend. Good morning, ambassador. John lewis was really thank you for being with Us John Lewis was really one of my heroes even though im older than he was. We all know about john lewis the icon, but he was your friend. Tell us about him as your good friend. John lewis was maybe the quietest member of the Civil Rights Movement. He could laugh, and he could joke, but he was very seldom rowdy, loud, or he had no ego at all. He had the power of humility that just won people over to him. He didnt push. He wasnt angry, and he had many reasons to be angry. But he was always dominated by that loving spirit in his life, that well, there was a power in his humility. Just made people want to follow him. Actually, i came from new york go on, sir. No, i moved from new york back to atlanta in 1961 after i saw the nashville sitin story on television. And i had been in the south before and Little Country churches, i thought i was out of the south until he came on with the nashville sitin story, and we realized that our place was back in atlanta. He got you to come back, in fact. And he said the come home, your wife was like, im coming. Martin luther king jr. s legacy has been with us since his passing. Do you think it will be the same with congressman lewis legacy . That generations from now will say and feel the way they do about him . I think this generation knows john lewis. And i think that john lewis and ct vivian who passed day before yesterday will be remembered for their tactical work, for their philosophical contributions, but mostly for their nonviolent presence in the face of severe danger and the willingness to march fearlessly through the valleys of the shadow of death did he, in fact, understand his own legacy, mr. Ambassador . Just how many lives he touched . I think he did because he touched almost everybody in the house of representatives during the 34 years that he served there. And he campaigned for them in their own districts. And hes probably been to every state in the Union Campaigning for members of congress. That was one of the reasons why he had so much political and moral influence because they knew that what he said he meant, and that thehes willing to liv and die by it. So there was a kind of integrity that you dont find often. There is a documentary that is out now called good trouble, and i know that you are a fan. So we will be hearing more about the congressman later on in this show. Mr. Ambassador, we thank you. Andrew young, our former ambassador to the u. N.
