And you just you just watch the magic. clears throat all right, you ready over there . Yeah. Stephen all right, good, me, too. Welcome to a late show everybody. Im your host, Stephen Colbert. People are still protesting all across america, and i mean all across america. The only other thing americans agree on this much is pumpable cheese, which is only slightly less toxic than systemic racism. People are enraged by the murder of george floyd by a Minneapolis Police officer a little more than a week ago, and the fact that he was only charged with thirddegree murder, and that the other cops on the scene werent charged with anything at all. Enter Minnesota Attorney general, keith ellison. Ellison took over the case on sunday, and today he announced so, activism works. Justice is possible. Easy, peasy, hold protests for nine days straight in 380 american cities, squeezy. Now, the night donald trump was elected, you might recall i was somewhat emotional. I started drinking, and someday i plan to stop. What i was worried about deep down is that trump is a dictator fanboy. Hes a lifetime subscriber to tiger beat down the protesters. Now were teetering dangerously close to trump making his dreams our nightmare. On monday, just so trump could hobble across the street for a photo op, military police and park rangers fired rubber bullets, tear gas, and flash grenades at peaceful protesters. It was like a little Tiananmen Square or in trumps case tiny man square. And today, trump went on the fox news radio, where you can only hear him lying, and explained it wasnt really as bad as it really was. Stephen remind me to never ask for trumps help when im moving. as trump okay, steve, i boxed up your wine glasses and your old dvds. Now run like hell and shove a wet rag in your mouth, cause its gas time. You promised me pizza, buddy. No surprise, trump blamed the protesters for everything. Stephen really . Because it sounds like youre full of crap and bull and crap. Reportedly, trump went medieval on the protesters in part because he was upset humiliated, really about the tv people revealing that he hid in a bunker over the weekend, but he said, nuhuh. Stephen that is an alltime great excuse. So he was just checking to make sure the bunker was okay. I didnt poop my pants. I just ran diagnostics on my boxers to see if they were load bearing. They are. Now, trump insists that despite the fireworks and human rights abuse, his visit to the church was a rousing success. Stephen as trump well, it started out as a jughead comic, but ivanka switched it out at the last second. Hey, i need something to read if one of those god guys starts jabbering on about loving your enemies. Because, for me, thats a lot of people. Trump also made this surprising claim stephen as trump thats why theyre in the streets. Theyre celebrating how much they love me, and im joining the party by tossing them a six pack of love gas. Those are just tears of joy. So, just how crazy are things right now . An anonymous source in the administration fet the need to push back on reports that trump wanted to use tanks against protestors, insisting that thats an interesting defense. as mob boss your honor, i didnt order nobody to kill joey the snake. i was just inquiring about the general nature of accidents, and then i just threw out the word wood chipper. the same official also floated the theory that instead of an order, trump was just free associating, saying tank wow. The commander in chief just throws out one of the military words he knows. I believe he knows five tank, bullet, colonel sanders, captain crunch, and bone spur. Now, trump isnt the only one getting criticism for his fascist photo op. So are secretary of defense, mark esper seen here trying to remember where he last saw his integrity and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, mark milley seen here being vanilly. You see, one of the hallmarks of american democracy is the u. S. Armed forces proud tradition of remaining out of politics to emphasize civilian control of the military. Yet, on the way to this photo op that again was preceded by attacking peaceful protesters, esper and milley walked with trump across the street. It reminds me of the old joke hy did the defense secretary and the chairman of the joint chiefs cross the road . Because the president is a chicken. The condemnation of this is bipartisan. A republican congressional aide, whos also a veteran, said that esper and milley buddy, they work for trump. Theyre already in hell. Now, yesterday, esper defended the indefensible, saying, youre the secretary of defense, and your defense is that you didnt know where you were going . The rest of us could see exactly where you were going. It rhymes with yahtzee though not as fun for the whole family. Esper scrambled at the edge of the ice again today. I did know that following the president s remarks on monday evening that many of us were going to join President Trump and review the damage in Lafayette Park and at st. Johns episcopal church. What i was not aware of was exactly where we were going when we arrived at the church and what the plans were once we got there. Stephen oh, thats the sign of a great military leader, like henry v. Once more unto the breech, dear friends, although im not aware exactly which breech and what the plans are when we get there god, branagh is good, thats really good. Esper has also gotten a lot of criticism for telling governors they had to quell protests by american citizens by dominating the battle space. He had an explanation for that, too. Earlier this week, i was quoted as saying the best way to get street violence under control was by dominating the battle space, and probably all of you who cover the pentagon hear us use this phrase often. Its something we use day in and day out. Its part of our military lexicon that i grew up with. Stephen exactly. People who grew up with a military lexicon use that phrase in all kinds of situations. as officer natalie, youre the love of my life. Will you make me the happiest man on earth by letting me dominate your battle space . Esper floundered on in retrospect, i would use different wording so as not to distract from the more important matters at hand or allow some to suggest that were militarizing the issue. Stephen yes, we must not allow some to suggest hes militarizing just because hes using the military. Shame on some i will dominate them in the battle space. Then, esper dropped this bombshell the option to use activeduty forces in a Law Enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort, and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now. I do not support invoking the insurrection act. Stephen and hes been fired and replaced with a cardboard cutout of robocop. Now, if a military crackdown seems familiar to you, you may work for the c. I. A. , because one former analyst said of trumps response to the protests, and if youve seen trump, you know he is always on the brink of collapse. He looks like a jenga tower about 12 moves in. And its not just the military, because now oh, good lets cool things down with some famously reasonable and laid back ice agents. If that doesnt work, they can deescalate by sending in some rabid badgers strapped with running chainsaws. The Border Police are supposed to help guard facilities and conduct arrests, but when asked for more specifics, as official look, we dont like to fuss over details. As long as, at the end of the day, the cage is full of kids, job well done. These agencies have cool toys that regular Law Enforcement doesnt. To provide live video of protests in minneapolis, oh, nothing says protecting free speech like predator. I cant wait for them to roll out their line of xenomorph info booths and thanos brand medical tents. Getting rid of protesters is a snap infinity slam stephen the administration has also authorized the as undercover guy mahalo, fellow rabblerousers can anyone here score me a granule of your most illicit jazz cigarettes . Three cheers for the underclass, and fudge the police so, if youre out there protesting, please be aware you could be facing agents from ice, c. B. P. , and the d. E. A. And for that matter the i. R. S. , the e. P. A. , and the f. D. A. , who will of course determine which protesters are richest in riboflavin. These federal tactics are sending a loud and clear message to local police forces, too, who have been coming down hard on peaceful protests. Cops have been meeting unarmed protesters while decked out in full military riot gear. Like yesterday in d. C. , where masked troops stood guard outside the Lincoln Memorial, to which lincoln replied, too soon . Too soon. That is a heartbreaking image. The Lincoln Memorial is an Historic Site for peaceful protest. Its where the womens march started in 2018. Its where Martin Luther king jr. Delivered his i have a dream speech. Its where forrest gump reunited with jenny after returning from vietnam. They were like peas and carrots again it was so beautiful and that wasnt the only display of Massive Force in d. C. Large armored military vehicles drove down the streets of the nations capitol. Secretary esper, do you see where were going now . Its so close, you dont need a ride. You could walk although, really more of a goose step. And just last night, in new york city, thousands of protesters attempted to cross the Manhattan Bridge after curfew, but ended up trapped on the bridge with police waiting on both ends. Marchers were stuck with no way out for over an hour. Thats horrifying. The only reason new yorkers should be trapped on a bridge for an hour is if theyre in traffic trying to get to their coworkers wifes baby shower. Im so sorry, katie we were going to give you the cutest little onesie. It had some smocking on the front, little embroidered roses. We turned it into a mask. But once in a while, i just dip my head in a bowl of leadbased paint, grab some rose art crayons and a permanent marker to slap on the deranged clown face of news that is my segment quarantinewhile, oh, how the mullet has turned. Joe exotic and Carole Baskin were rival zookeepers in the netflix show tiger king. If you havent seen it, imagine an unemployed magician too irresponsible to sell bootleg fireworks, so instead hes allowed to own endangered megafauna. Quarantinewhile, i know in the midst of all this chaos and uncertainty, youre all asking the same question how will fuller house handle Lori Loughlins absence while shes in jail . After agreeing to plead guilty in the College Admissions scandal, loughlin had to be written out of the show in as clever a way as possible. And now, we are proud to welcome you back. Stephen welcome back, everybody. My first guest is the best selling author and media personality you know as a co host of the Breakfast Club. Please welcome, charlamagne tha god. Thanks for being here. Its always good to talk to you, my fellow south carolinian. Yes, sir. Stephen now since the death of george floyd there have been something like, protests in 380 american towns and cities. What do you make of what is going on right now . I mean, none of it surprises me, you know. Its a few perfect storms going on at once. Like i always say that right now, america is being exposed for the illusion its always been, you know. America advertises itself as an allinclusive resort but its really a private club founded by rich white men for rich white men and they make the rules, and were caught up in the web of White Supremacy. And nothing is going to come out of the web until you have more privileged white men who are willing to dismantle that system by relinquishing and sharing the wealth and power, you know. And black people, we dont have the power to dismantle that system. We didnt create it. We have the power to force our elected officials to change the way the system is and thats what these protests are doing, to me. And ive said it a million times, until america atones for its original sin, which is slavery, through legislation and reparations, no good is going to come to america until that happens. America is going to continue to reap what is sows, like, this is americas karma. Like, you cant advertise liberty and justice for all but only offer liberty and justice for white folks. Like, how many times are we supposed to watch black people brutalized and murdered at the hands of the police. Like, our ancestors were enslaved and built this country for free and didnt get anything for it and the country feels like it doesnt have to atone for that . Like, no, and the reason we got to constantly tell people black lives matter now is because of the threefifths rule in the constitution. It treated slaves as three fifths of a person, you know. Slaves were treated as property. And to this day, you know, because we are still in this system of White Supremacy, i think they still see us that way and treat us as such. And you know, you have to acknowledge the fact that the one of the wealthiest nations in the world, you have to ask when are they going to give a damn about the plight of the poor . Americas Unemployment Rate is about to hit 20 i think i read today, 40 plus Million People filed for unemployment, you know, wondering how theyre going to pay their rent, pay their bills and put food on the table, and you wonder why people are looting . Not to mention people are clearly not happy with the administration in the white house, so you just have this perfect storm of people who are disgusted with this white supremacist system called america and it doesnt surprise me at all, you know. I think america has been past its breaking point and im actually shocked this is just happening now, to be honest with you. Stephen well, what do you think the protests can best do to force some sort of change right now . Because there are protests all over the place. Theyve been going on pretty much unabated for over a week now matter of fact, theyre only expanding, even as the pressure comes down from above, that pressure actually seems to be increasing peoples willingness to go out into the streets. In this case violating curfews or standing up against rubber bullets or tear gas or flash grenades. What do you think the if this is some form of civil war, what is the end game here . What is the objective . Is it Political Action . Reform of our laws . What is what is the what is the thing that would satisfy protesters in your opinion im not asking you to speak for everybody . Because it is hard to imagine what is the end of this right now . Because it seems to be growing. Yeah, i mean, i dont know. You know, i think about you know, i think about, you know, after m. L. K. Got assassinated and it was, you know, a week of riots, and then i think i think it was, like, 40plus million in damage got done to america in, like, over 100plus cities. And then lyndon b. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964. You know, i dont know if, if he did that because of the riots, but i think people, you know, have the right to be angry, and they have the right to express it. And i think that theyre just screaming to america to make a change. Like, we keep talking about thing going back to normal. Normal was Never Working in america. It just wasnt. How does a white supremacist system work for everybody . So yes, i think that, you know, there has to be a lot of atonement from this country in regards to legislation and reparations, to black people in particular. You know, we built this country for free. Stephen you and i, as a said before, are both from South Carolina. And South Carolina has its own particular responsibility for the condition of Race Relations and the supremacist system in the United States. But what do you think about this moment . What does it say about the responsibility that all of the states bear . Or do you think its worse in the south . Or is it merely more overt . Um, i think i think you know, thats interesting. Growing up in South Carolina i always used to tell people i never really experienced overt racism. I think i experienced the more covert racism. But i knew that the overt racism existed. Just because i didnt personally experience it, i know plenty of people who did, you know. And i was just always taught that look racism in the eye and fight it. You know what im saying . I think i think i think thats just black folks in the south way of doing things, you know. Because if you think it, especially where were from, South Carolina, we had the stono rebellion in 1739, and Denmark Vesey in charleston, South Carolina, he planned a slave revolt in 1822. And you thing about virginia with nat turner and the gabriels conspiracy. And new orleans with the german coast uprising, the Civil Rights Era with rosa parks in alabama and Stokely Carmichael in mississippi and alabama, Martin Luther king jr. That was all the south. So i dont think weve ever had a problem, you know, standing toe to toe with racism, looking racism right in the eye, you know. I think racists and bigots and White Supremacists they have a problem looking back and seeing us, you know. We see their racism, but they they look at us and all they see is property. And thats why now i think the reckoning that needs to happen in this country is what i said earlier, just doing rght by black folks. No good is going to come to this country until they come right by us, youve got to do the celie in the color purple when you say that, okay. They have to atone for their original sin, which is slavery, and thats only going to happen through legislation and reparations. Like, we need Economic Justice for what this country did to our ancestors. We need Economic Justice because systemic racism was designed to marginalize black people, so now we need systemic retribution to reform our communities. Simple as that. Stephen joe biden appeared on the Breakfast Club a little more than a week ago and he made a comment that hes since apologized for, talking to you. He said, if you have a problem figuring out whether youre for me or trump, then you aint black. And, again, as i said, he apologized for that and said he didnt want to take the support of the black community for granted and that nobody should. What was your initial reaction in that moment . I honestly just thought it was like a greatgreatgranddad joke. And, honestly, my initial reaction was exactly what i said to him afterwards. I said to him, its not about trump. Its about me wanting something for my community because thats really my focus. Thats really my message. You know, i want my elected officials to go into the white house and dismantle this thing called White Supremacy and really do something to uplift the black community in a real meaningful, tangible way. And i dont get offended easily. So to me it didnt quite bother me because i wasnt one of those folks he was talking about. I really didnt like what he said after, i didnt like the aftermath. Like, he told don lemon i baited him. I didnt bait you. Vice President Biden volunteered that fish. I didnt i didnt throw no bait out there for that fish whatsoever. I didnt like him saying he was being too cavalier. He said when he apologized i was being too cavalier. That word is defined as not showing concern. He needed to show concern stephen he gave a speech yesterday in philadelphia. What did you think about that in talking about the United States and Race Relations . I liked it a lot. I really did. I dont know if you remember when reverend Jeremiah Wright made the comments and people put pressure on barack obama because of the comments. Stephen yes. And barack obama was talking to the older white voters stephen talking about his own grandmother, i think. Yeah, yeah. So i felt like, you know, joe biden should have done the same thing with, you know, black people, you know. Especially young black people. And i think i kind of i kind of got that from that speech. He was talking the way he needed to talk to win this election because right now it just seems like hes expecting trump to lose. But you have to play to win. Because a lot of us still dont know how trump won in 2016. We just know that there were 4. 4 million registered voters who showed up in 2012 but didnt show up in 2016 and a third of them were black. Theres no guarantee theyre going to show up this year. You really have to give them a reason to show up. Thats why i keep saying, man, v. P. Biden, really lean into blackness. I know he watches your show, so if hes watching, he needs to know that if barack obama was j. F. K. , then joe biden needs to be lyndon b. Johnson. Like, he has the opportunity to be as progressive as lyndon b. Johnson. Lyndon b. Johnson may have been labeled a racist, but his record doesnt reflect that. Lyndon b. Johnsons record shows a progressive on race and class. Right now this moment calls for it. We need that kind of radical legislative change, like that 57 Civil Rights Act. That 64 Civil Rights Acts change. That 65 Voting Rights act change. Like the Civil Rights Act smashed jim crow. So we need biden, along with his team to create legislation that smashes White Supremacy. Thats it. Stephen charlamagne we have to take a break. Dont go away, folks. You talked to Rush Limbaugh the other day which surprised me a little bit, but you interview everybody, which i admire. You had Rush Limbaugh on, and you said to him you were talking about White Privilege, and he said he doesnt believe it exists. What was what went through your mind when you heard that . Um, at first i was like like i told him, i said, youre being delusional right now. What really bothered me about that conversation is after i left that conversation, i felt like it wasnt productive. You know, and i have no problem talking to people from the other side. I just have to feel like thats really your truth. I dont know if i got that from rush. It felt like more of a performance, you know,. Stephen i had i had that issue talking to the president himself. The only time i ever interviewed him, and the reason why im not that interested to talking to him again is that it was a pure performance. It did not feel like he was being honest. I have spoken to other pundits like that before. They say anything they want in front of the microphone, but then they come on your show and act like a reasonable man. Yes. And after we left his show, he was taking callers. And a caller asked him what is White Supremacy . What does charlamagne mean when he talks about White Supremacy, White Privilege . Stephen he broke it down so eloquently. Rush broke it down like he knew exactly what it was. And i was like, see why were you playing clueless when we were having the conversation. It didnt feel productive, man. It felt like a waste of my time to be honest with you. Stephen it has to with the sense of protecting your own power and in his own studio he might have more of the courage to look something in the eyes. In your studio, its like youre in somebody elses court and you dont want to give them a point. We did a simulcast. Stephen oh, okay. We both work for iheart media. And rush had this whole epiphany about the murder of, you know, big floyd, and, you know, he thinks it was wrong, and he wants the police to be arrested, and he wants to talk about it. I thought that would have been powerful because i always think its great when white people use their privilege to combat prejudice. But if you cant get to the root of why these situations happen, which is White Supremacy, which is White Privilege, then, you know, what kind of conversation are we really having . Stephen well, i hope well continue these conversations. Thanks for being here, man. Charlamagne tha god, everybody. Well be right back with a performance by Tunde Adebimpe of tv on the radio.
