We will not tolerate discrimination and as a queer person, a person that is transgender, that is important to me. Reporter to those gathered here tonight it means that justice is unstoppable. Reporter just before the pandemic hit she walked door to door in city hall with black homeless advocates telling her story and the story of other black community members. She wants to know why someone with wadecent salary and consistent work is now homeless. I am staying with my mom. The only place she found she could afford to rent was in antioch. Reporter she came to city hall to shine a light on the regions Affordable Housing crisis, it is leading to resegregation. Those of us thought segregation is a factor of the past, that was old days, the ghettos and people were concentrated and now we risen to the middle class and integrated, not so. Reporter her team is mapping out how our cities are becoming whiter and wealthier. Antioch is considered highly segregated. 96 nonwhite. Other areas have been flagged as experiencing advanced exclusion. Like piedmont. The group found resources rarely overlap with segregated poor area. Eacascading effects of disadvantage. We lived here for seven years. Reporter she was born and raised in oakland but lives in richmond. Another segregated area that is nonwhite. It is surreal to see it. They made a lot of changes. Reporter we profiled her family last year after they were being evected. They refused to speak to us. If they had had just had a conversation with us, i would have not been opposed to paying more. The owner moved his son into one unit and forced them out. Her mother is a nurse and always paid rent on time. After that oakland changed its law. But it was too late for the family. We didnt know what we were going to do or where we were going to go. The rents around here are really high. Reporter they were able to buy a home in richmond. They are lucky, they could make it work but still, richmond isnt home. It is sad to be from here and see the changes and they dont include me or people that look like me. Reporter they fall into the missing middle category. They make too much to qualify for housing subsidies but dont make enough to pay the going rate in their hometowns. 30 an hour but it is not enough for San Francisco. We are losing culture and losing a sense of community. To think we can build a new culture is Wishful Thinking i think. Some of this is going to be lost forever. Reporter there is still a lot that can be done. Most importantly resources need to be shared so those who have been forced to the fringes dont end up being more disconnected. If we leave it to the market, it is going to sprawl out and we wont have solutions for the region or for communities. The Research Shows resegregation is not unique to the bay area.
