Civil unrest is erupting in cities across the United States. Reporter together with this identification host and journalist at the staterun China Global Television network. Another story went pretty much unnoticed by the mainstream u. S. Media. Reporter but focus on the staterun part, and youll appreciate that the journalist description needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Western propaganda reporter let the record show, however, that liu xin is very, very good at what she does. Dont they understand how ridiculous they sound . Reporter and what she does in flawless english is reflect the official chinese view of the United States. If you go onto social media, there are a lot of people asking, what is it about american democracy and freedom . You think that you are the beacon of the free world, and yet when it comes to a lot of the issues that were seeing now, it seems that there is a great degree of hypocrisy. Reporter when you speak of the perceived hypocrisy, what do you mean . They talk about, you know, everybody having the right to be equal, that people should be free, all of these Democratic Values that the United States have been promoting around the world and yet when it comes to human rights, when it comes to protecting peoples lives, proebility iting protecting peoples health, it is not number one when it comes to protecting the lives of the american people. Reporter its a little irritating to be lectured on human rights and the sanctity of life by a Chinese Government representative, but our government was late recognizing the enormous threat posed by the coronavirus, and the u. Reporter Bernard Henri levi is what the french like to call a public intellectual. America is a force on the world. Today, no. The shining city is barricaded inside its borders, looking inside of itself, and turning its back to the rest of the world. Reporter is there a feeling in mexico that america has changed . I think people in mexico are seeing a United States that is less powerful, less prosperous, less effective in dealing with a very serious challenge than people in mexico might have thought as early as six months ago, a year ago. Reporter Jorge Castaneda knows something about Foreign Relations and dealing with the United States. He was mexicos secretary of Foreign Affairs in the early 2000s. Its not going to be easy for other countries whether they be the wealthy ones or the poor ones or the very large and powerful countries like china, like india, to easily accept American Leadership or to trust the United States again in terms of the way that chancellor Angela Merkel has put it in germany. We need to take our destiny into our own hands. Are we germans going to put our security in the hands of people that we can no longer trust . Thats going to be difficult to recover. Reporter in 1980, when much of the world depended on u. S. Security guarantees, the soviets had just invaded afghanistan. And now, some reaction from the soviet union. Reporter Vladimir Pozner in moscow made the first of what would be many appearances on nightline as a radio commentator. I do not agree with what you call an invasion. Im very happy to have the opportunity to argue our viewpoint. Reporter he was an effective apologist for the kremlin. These days, still based in moscow, pozner is an independent voice with a highly Popular National Television Program on public affairs. You talked to a lot of the thinkers and policymakers in russia. Yes, i do. Reporter if you were to synthesize their attitude toward the United States and how it has changed over the last few years, what would you say . Its kind of lost its idealism that was so important to the rest of the world and to this country, especially to those who wanted freedom back in the day, you and i used to speak to dissonance and there, the generation that followed. Theres a feeling that somehow america has gotten off the track that made it america and made it so attractive to the rest of the world. The view of the United States has changed quite sharply in the era of President Trump. Reporter Zanny Minton Beddoes has similar concerns. Her magazine, the economist has an affiliated Research Unit that grades nations according to the quality of their democracy. In 2016, it downgraded the United States to the level of a flawed democracy. I love america. But i find when i go there now, theres a degree to which it is an angry, unhappy and paralyzed country now is really extraordinary. There is no low point. Is is the truth. What do the mobs want . Frankly, you could literally be a and russians kind of say, whats going on there . Reporter Vladimir Pozner also lived in the United States for many years. Is there a sense that americas time as the dominant country in the world is, if not over, at least nearing an end . Definitely there is that kind of feeling. And probably the next number one is going to be china, and theres not much you can do about that. But i think there is definitely a feeling that the American Century has passed. Reporter well, what a bummer. Well, im i wish it werent so, ill tell you that. Reporter because . Because its a country i care about very deeply, goddamn it. Reporter there are still those who believe that americas best days are not in the past. Bernard henri levi is definitely not ready to give up on the United States. No, no. The values of america are still there. Embodied by real women and men, embodied by institutions, and id even say my prediction since the beginning is that the time of donald trump will be shorter than his supporters believe, because the real wall is not the wall between america and mexico. The real wall is the wall of Civil Society in america. The wall of american women, the wall of the americans who are revolted when black citizens and africanamerican citizen is killed in cold blood by crazy and murderer policeman. There is such a big part of america who is revolted by that. So, america is still alive. Reporter history teaches us that all great powers are ultimately replaced. And one day, inevitably, it will be americas turn. What our friend Bernard Henri levi seems to be saying is, true, but not yet. How did i get on this show, colin . Did my mom see an nbc executive hit a kid and drive off . [ laughter ] reporter just 20 years old when he made his debut and the character he most frequently plays is himself. You know how wrong about politics you have to be for, like, me to notice . [ laughter ] reporter but what really makes davidson a long shot is that when he was asked to audition, he didnt even realize that saturday night live was still on the air. I didnt know it was still around. Reporter is that true . Yeah, i mean, like, when youre 16, youre not watching, like, political midnight shows. Reporter how has that changed your life . Reporter in the king of Staten Island, he is coauthor and star of his first major film, about a drifting 20something from new yorks least celebrated borough. Its a film he says is about 75 auto biographical. So this is lovely Staten Island. Yes, this is the lovely Staten Island coast. Reporter Staten Island is also the place Pete Davidson calls home. You live below us. I live in the basement. [ laughter ] reporter do you feel like Staten Island is part of you . Is it in you . Are you like a Staten Island guy . Oh, yeah, im exactly what Staten Island is, someone living in their moms basement. What are you going to do . Are you going to get a job . Or are you going to leave the house . I dont know. Im going to open that tattoo restaurant. Reporter in the movie, davidsons character is struggling after his father, a firefighter, dies in the line of duty. At least youve got to know him. Well, youre lucky you didnt get to know him. Okay . Youre almost normal. If you got to know him, youd know he was the coolest guy ever and that would have ruined the rest of your life. Reporter and if that doesnt exactly sound like a comedy not even with marisa tomei, his mom and bill burr, the guy trying to date her are you flirting with me . Yeah. . , this is what it looks like. Really subtle. Eporter davidson has had a lifetime to find the humor in it. Im rusty. Nice to meet you. I just always wanted to show where im coming from, pretty much like how a tragedy affects family, and i think, like, there hasnt been many of those movies that are like really honest and transparent. Reporter his own further died responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center when davidson was just 7. Do you remember the moment you found out . I dont remember the moment i found out, but i remember when i started to get curious, because a lot of his friends would be coming over, and he wasnt over. Then i started to put two and two together that maybe something was wrong. Reporter when people have Something Like that happen to them, often its like a dividing line in their life, and theres everything before and everything after. Right. Eporter did you feel like even though you were only a kid, you were already a changed person . Oh, yeah, absolutely. One of my best friends is forever gone. I am 17, so, unfortunately, for you, ladies, you no he keep it down, you know . You could go to jail. Reporter but comedy became a way to cope and as a teen, he started doing open mic nights in manhattan, which led to what he was sure would be his only season of saturday night live. I was like 10, 12 years younger than everybody else. So it felt like it was a joke. It felt like very makeawishy, charity. It felt like charity for sure. Reporter how confident were you as a comic . It sounds like you were but also you werent. I was confident as a comic because you have to be. When youre on stage, its where i feel my most comfortable, but offstage, i never really thought i was like, i dont think im a great comic or anything like that. Im very selfhating. Petes one of those guys you see him and right away, you think that hes going to do great things. Most important thing about pete is hes insanely funny. Reporter judd apatow cowrote and directed the king of Staten Island, having already helped launch the careers of some of comedys biggest names, among them ben stiller ooh. Reporter amy schumer. Who the hell is jesus h. Garcia . Reporter and seth rogen. Im going to go with jesus here. Why clean it . Its just going to get fire on it. Reporter he says davidson has that kind of talent. I dont even know why you got to clean the truck. What, are you trying to show up all sexy to a fire . I always say to him, me and most of my friends, we got to make 12 really goofy movies before attempting to do Something Like this. I think theres really no limit to what pete can do. Hes a fantastic actor. Hes a fantastic writer. He was a great producer. So i do think its just the beginning for pete. I googled it. Its never been done, not even as a joke. No one wants to go to a restaurant and watch people get tattooed while they eat. Its gross. Its the best idea ever. Ruby tattoosdays. Reporter but as davidsons career took off, his personal struggles deepened. And by 2017, he says he was at his lowest, even at times suicidal. How close did you get . I got not to be, like look, i got as close as you can get. I mean, just like testing the waters and until i met the right treatments and met the right doctors and did all the work that you need to do to, like, not feel that way. It got pretty dark and scary. Reporter yeah. So that scene in the movie where you close your eyes on the road yeah. Reporter is that based on something that really happened . Yeah, thats true. I used to do that. Thats horrible to say, but, yeah, i used to close my eyes on a closed road, usually at night, and i would drive without a seat belt. Reporter but if 2017 was the worst year of his life, it was also the best, the year he found help and, through the writing and making of his new movie, a possible way forward. I really wanted this to be, like, cleansing for me. Reporter cleansing how . I feels like i got to speak about it in the biggest way possible, and i could get my story out there. So, i feel like now i could, like, let it go. Reporter do you think youll ever leave Staten Island . Maybe one day, but right now i feel really comfortable here. Knockknock. Whos there . Not your dad [ laughter ] reporter whatever happens with the king of Staten Island, Pete Davidson says the work itself has been worth it. And always will be. The story behind the attack is told in a new book by Chris Wallace of fox news. He talks with our david martin. A nation already on edge pushed to the brink. Reporter as the anchor of fox news sunday, Chris Wallace has been at the center of the cultural and political wars swirling around President Trump. So, his new book seems to come out of nowhere. One of the things i love the most about researching this book and writing this book is it has nothing to do with donald trump. Vice president harry s. Truman takes the oath of office as 32nd president. Reporter countdown 1945 published by simon schuster, a viacom cbs company, tells the dramatic story of the 116 days from Harry Trumans sudden and unexpected swearing in as president to the dropping of the atomic bomb on hiroshima. It was the biggest decision maybe any president has ever made. Reporter Vice President truman had been presiding over a Dreary Senate debate when he was called to the white house. Eleanor roosevelt is dressed in black, and she says, harry, the president is dead. And he said, mrs. Roosevelt, is there anything we can do for you . And Eleanor Roosevelt says, harry, is there anything we can do for you, because youre the one in trouble now. President truman asked the full roosevelt cabinet to remain in office. Reporter truman and the cabinet looked stunned at his swearingin. I felt like the moon, the stars and all the planets had fallen on me, he said. Secretary of war Henry Stimson pulled him aside. He says, mr. President , i need to tell you about a topsecret project of immense importance that has created the most powerful bomb ever put together. Reporter truman had been Vice President for only three months and knew nothing about the Manhattan Project and the race to build the atomic bomb. So this is the original weapon of mass destruction. Absolutely. The world had never seen anything like this. Reporter the military was busy planning the invasion of japan, an operation general George Marshall estimated would require 700,000 troops, take a year and cost tens of thousands of american casualties. The bomb had not even been tested. Truman had no idea whether it was going to work, and he basically said its a science project until you can convince me that this is actually a weaponen, which doesnt happen until july 16th. Reporter on that morning, at alamogordo, new mexico, the scientists who designed and built what they called the gadget, were ready. At 5 30, this pulse goes to the bomb, which is up on 100foot tower, and something happens that has never happened in the history of the world before. Reporter this is what it looked like. This enormous Mushroom Cloud billows 40,000 feet into the air. The 100foot steel tower is vaporized and every living thing from antelope to blades of grass were vaporized. Reporter truman was in potsdam, germanyny, with his first meeting with churchill and stalin. He realizes this isnt a science experiment anymore. Hes got the most powerful weapon imagined by man. Reporter the president has at his disposal a weapon that can destroy a city. Now you got to choose a city. Right. Eporter hows that done . They wanted a major city that had largely been untouched that had a military impact and that had the topography that would augment and magnify the explosiveness of the bomb so it would have as dramatic a military and psychological impact as possible. And at the top of the list was hiroshima. Reporter was hiroshima a legitimate military target . Absolutely. It was about 250,000 people, but there were about 50,000 troops garrisoned there so it was a legitimate target. Reporter surely, they realized women and children would not be spared. He basically made the calculation, if we go and invade, were going to kill a lot of japanese civilians, and were also going to kill a lot of americans, or we can drop the bomb and just kill the japanese. It sounds coldblooded, but that was the calculation. Reporter the bomb weighed 9,000 pounds and was hoisted into the belly of a b29 flown by colonel paul tibbets, who named the plane for his mother enola gay. It took off in the Early Morning of august 6th from the island of tinian. The bomb fell from 30,000 feet to 1800 feet before detonating. The copilot robert lewis jotted down perhaps the most succinct and apt description of the moment. He writes down, my god, what have we done . A short time ago, an american airplane reporter truman was aboard ship returning from the potsdam conference when he announced the destruction of hiroshima. We are now prepared to destroy more rapidly and completely every productive intersurprise the japanese have in any city. Reporter he was jubilant about it, because he thought, now finally, maybe we can end the war and we can save hundreds of thousands of american lives. Reporter all that was left standing were structures built of concrete, and they had been gutted by fire. But the city was offlimits to reports until a young correspondent named john hersey broke through censorship and wrote probably the most famous Magazine Article ever in the new yorker. And that is the first time americans really found out in graphic detail what it was like to experience the bombing at ground zero. Reporter wallace found out from hideko tamura, who was a 10yearold girl in hiroshima. She sees people incinerated, she sees people who the thermal wind has sucked their eyes out. She sees bodies all over the place. She sees people who have been vaporized and all thats left is the shadow of where they were against a wall. Reporter japan did not surrender until three days later after a second more powerful bomb named fat man was dropped on nagasaki. Truman at one point writes, i think that the flower of American Youth is worth a couple of japanese cities. Its official. Its all over. Its total victory. Reporter world war ii, the most terrible in history, was over. 75 years later, a stark truth remains is. A Nuclear Weapon has been used in warfare only twice, three days apart, and the only country thats ever used it was the United States. If you think about the last few months maybe itll give us a new perspective. Maybe well see things weve been missing. Maybe itll help us see just how connected we all are. And maybe. Just maybe, if we look at the big picture. Itll remind us just how amazing freedom really is. Whove got their eczema under control. Rs, with less eczema, you can show more skin. Reporter for generations, tulsa, oklahoma, had a secret. My mother cared for an elderly white man who, on his death bed, rambled on about the smoke and the fires and the shooting and the killing. Reporter Mechelle Brown, Program Coordinator at the citys greenwood cultural center, says her mother tried to learn more. As she went to her inlaws and said, what is he talking about . What happened in tulsa . And they said, look, we dont talk about that around here. And dont go asking anybody about it. Reporter the secret was passed from generation to generation. We never discussed black wall street or the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Reporter the Tulsa Race Massacre happened 99 years ago, when White Tulsans descended on the citys thriving black district, known as black wall street. White rioters killed hundreds of black residents and burned the neighborhood to the ground. It was sparked by an accusation that a black man attacked a white woman in a whiteowned office building. Theres a scream. The elevator doors open, and a man working in the building came running to see what had happened and claimed that sarah page had been assaulted. By the end of the day, they were claiming that she had been raped. It wasnt taught in schools. The newspapers that reported on it were removed from our library. It was actively covered up in our community. Reporter tulsas mayor, g. T. Bynum, says he first heard about the massacre in 2001. Somebody brought it up, and i thought, thats ridiculous. Theres no way something that awful happened in tulsa and nobody talked about it for 80 years . But then come to find thats exactly what happened here. My greatgrandmother rebecca clutcher lived on black wall street. Reporter she said her grandfather barely escaped. She was selfsufficient. She had a barbecue joint. She was beautiful. All of a sudden, she had to run in fear of her life, jumped on back of this truck and fled to muskogee. Reporter Rebecca Brown crutch ever lived until 1994. We didnt get a chance to talk about the stories because of the fear. They were afraid to talk about it because they thought it might happen again. Reporter crutcher says she felt some of that same fear after her twin brotherter earns shots fired reporter terence was shot and killed by tulsa police in 2016. He was unarmed. I answered the call, and i heard my dad, my hero, screaming at the top of his lungs saying, they killed my son. They killed my son. And i just finally asked, who killed terence . And he said, the police. Hes got his hands up there now. Reporter Terence Crutcher was 40 years old when officer Betty Jo Shelby noticed him standing near the side of the road. Still walking. Reporter his car was in the middle of the street. Enough for taser, i think. Reporter in the Police Chopper high above, officers give the kind of playbyplay. That looks like a bad dude too, to be honest. To see him walking away with his hands up, i see the visual of him in my head every night that i lay my head down, and i pray to god, i ask him, take this away. Reporter mayor g. T. Bynum took office three months after crutchers death. A lot of people saw what happened to Terence Crutcher and they said, this wouldnt have happened if he was a white man. Do you think thats true . No, i dont. Reporter hundreds turned out to mourn Terence Crutchers death. Which bynum suggests was a result of drugs found in crutchers system. Drugs that made him unable to follow directions. Officer shelby says he failed to follow orders to stop, and that she shot him believing he was reaching into his car for a weapon. It is more about the really insidious nature of drug utilization than it is about race in my opinion. Reporter you think hes sizes up the situation to see reporter in 2017, officer shelby spoke with Bill Whitaker on 60 minutes. If i wait to find out if he had a gun or not, i could very well be dead. Theres something that we always say id rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6. But as it turned out, he did not have a gun. No, he did not. Reporter the protests came after a jury found Betty Jo Shelby not guilty of manslaughter. Dont shoot reporter 2017, 1921. Mechelle brown says the same attitudes that led to the black wall street massacre linger in tulsa to this day. No one was ever held accountable for the hundreds of lives that were lost. Do you think that this memory of the tulsa massacre also shaped the behavior of the police in tulsa in the generations afterwards . Not as much as racism that continues to be prevalent in our community. Racism is something that is learned at a very young age. During the massacre, there were white men who went and gathered their sons and brought them to fight alongside them. They gave them the right to carry a gun and to shoot an innocent black person without any fear of any type of consequence. My brother had struggled like millions of other americans. Reporter Tiffany Crutcher says she was stunned by officer shelbys acquittal. I know the family was not satisfied with how that case played out in the justice system. Were you satisfied . I think we have to have faith in that justice system. Reporter still, last week, mayor bynum announced that hes proposing an independent monitor to review police actions. What was the thing you most wanted to change in the aftermath of your brothers killing . I wanted to change the culture of policing, this notion of us versus them. Reporter so crutcher, a former physical therapist, is now a fulltime advocate for police reform. The Police Killed your brother. How do you get to a place where youre not afraid of the police . I will be honest. I am afraid. But i do believe that we can get to a place if we change policies and if if people are held accountable. Reporter Mechelle Brown as a resident of tulsa, as a black mother, i am scared for my children. I am scared for this Younger Generation who are tired of being told to pray about it, to sing, to go to church, to put it in gods hands. Theyre tired of hearing that. Reporter 99 years after black wall street, the fear lives on. Who would think, in 2020 and the United States of america, that we would fear from the very people that are meant to protect us . Reporter Tiffany Crutcher cant change how her brother died, but she hopes there are things she can change. For tulsa and for herself. I believe that, in order for that to happen, that the laws at the highest level that give Police Officers the authority to commit legal murder with no accountability have to be changed, the use of force standard has to be changed, and when that happens, he could the. Reporter and then you could find some peace too. Absolutely. Absolutely. [ abblasen fanfare ] this crisis has changed almost everything, but not our resolve. Weve pulled together, worked hard to keep each other safe. Weve flattened the curve and are starting to reopen our communities. We can protect the people we love, and help californians get back on their feet. For our families and our communities, lets stay the course and stop the spread. Tonight tonight theres only you tonight pauley thats tonight from this seasons revival of the classic Broadway Musical west side story. Of course, tonight would have been the night they handed out the tony awards had the coronavirus not intervened. Still, americas theaters are keeping the lights on and keeping up their hopes, as we hear from mo rocca. Reporter when did you know you wanted a life in the theater . When i was evicted from my mothers wum. Yes, thats when i knew. Reporter actor andree de shields was destined for a life on stage. Andree de shields [ cheers and applause ] reporter and last year, at age 73, he won the tony award. [ applause ] for his role in hadestown. Reporter which took top honors as best musical. De shields was performing eight shows a week until march 12t 12th. I go to sign in, and the production stage manager says, what are you doing here . I said, im reporting back to work. She says, theres no show tonight. Reporter and here at the walter kerr theatre, there havent been any performances since, but the lights of broadway havent been entirely dimmed by the pandemic. The seats may be empty, the actors and crew nowhere to be seen, but every stage on broadway has a lamp like the one behind me burning continuously. Its called a ghost light. And its a tradition that goes back to the late 1800s. A ghost light is a light that stays on inside the theater even when the house is dark, when the shows not going on or when a show is not running. Reporter producer and Author Jennifer Ashley Tepper says a ghost light serves a practical function. When the show ends and the theater becomes dark, you have a light on so that the people that are backstage, the people that are keeping up maintenance can have a way to see before the whole theater is lit again. Reporter as for the ghost part the more romantic history of ghost lights is, of course, that theyre lit so that the ghosts will either have company and be able to move around freely or to keep the ghosts away. So theres a lot of legends about that in the theater. Reporter i know. It just looks like a light bulb on a stand, but the ghost light means so much more than that. The only light in the theater was the ghost light, which is downstage center. Reporter andree de shields earliest membertry of a memory of a ghost light was in 1772 and he was auditioning for the title role in the wiz. And because the theater was empty, you could hear your footsteps echo. Youre walking on stage. Already, the alchemy, the magic is sort of washing over you. Reporter do you remember what you sang . Of course, i do. Im going to wait till the midnight hour when there is no one else around im going to wait till the midnight hour when my love comes tumbling down reporter and its just you on the stage of the majestic theater. And the ghost light. Reporter needless to say, he got the part. Let me tell you well, you know, i have been in shows since i was 9 years old. I just took it for granted there was the ghost light at night when wed close up. Reporter threetime tony winner Bernadette Peters is a Living Legend of broadway originating roles in sunday in the park for george and into the woods. Madam rose reporter and starring in the 2003 revival of gypsy where she shared the stage with a ghost light. Its always there, and it does represent the theater and its always lit. Reporter do you think that thats a powerful symbol . I do, because were going to come back at some point. Reporter before the shutdown, there were 31 shows running on broadway and 8 which hadnt even opened to the public. These days, the theater district is, indeed, ghostly. The sound of music replaced by the sound of silence. Its like youre running a race, and suddenly everyone says, okay, stop and go home. You say, wait a minute. Its i dont know how to describe it, mo, but our regular clocks are off. Thats all i can say. Reporter veteran stage manager Peter Lawrence won a special tony award in 2013. He was in rehearsal for a new show when everything came to a stop. Most people that i know in the theater dont really fit any place else. Theres nothing else we can do either than the theater. Reporter but during this extended intermission got to be in the zoom where it happened reporter broadways top talent have simply relocated from the great white way to the world wide web. Again step kick kick reporter the Dance Captain from the musical diana has been baking broadway pies for instagram. But it isnt my fault. Reporter rob mcclure who was set to open as mrs. Doubtfire lovingly mocks orchestra conductors. Reporter theres even a tiger king Musical Parody starring tony winner kristin chenoweth. Theres some video being made. Everyone is connecting. So in a sense, were extremely connected, and i think we feel very supportive of each other. Reporter for music director actor and radio host certainly certainly, broadway is family Seth Broadway is family which is why he and his husband launched stars in the house. An online variety show. So far, theyve raised over 350,000 for outofwork members of the theater community. Its shocking because no one has an income. I cant believe people are still donating but they are. So its been really amazing. Reporter some stars have still found a way to perform for live audiences. Brian stokes mitchell, who recovered from covid19, is giving back by singing out of his apartment window. And Bernadette Peters has become part of a nightly audience cheering for new york citys healthcare workers. And the first time i went out there, i was so overwhelmed, i had to go inside. And then i thought, oh, no, this is im going to film this. This is amazing. This is so beautiful. [ cheers ] we cant get the applause and now were giving the applause to people that deserve applause. Reporter its not clear when curtains will rise again. The Broadway League is hoping for a january 2021 restart. Im so looking forward to mrs. Doubtfire and then company. Were waiting for company. And were waiting for music man. And i mean all those shows. We need them. This is going to sound hopelessly sentimental what im saying to you. But theyre waiting for us. Reporter Peter Lawrence is certain the theaters will reopen. After all, theyve left the light on. Theres a warm heart on that stage and those theaters are waiting for us to come back, and im very grateful they are. vo since our beginning, our business has been people. And their financial wellbeing. Its evident in good times, with decisions focused on the longterm. And crucial when circumstances become difficult. That continued emphasis on people our advisors, associates, clients and communities gives us purpose, strength and a way forward. Today. And always. Pauley many people are hoping protests over the death of george floyd will lead toeo real change in Race Relations in america. But as Maurice Dubois points out, black americans have been here before. Reporter just beyond this Police Station in harlem stands a statue of harriet tubman, who led enslaved people to freedom on the underground railroad, tum symbols of strength a block away from each other, yet worlds apart. What are your thoughts at the moment . To witness the memory of harriet tubman. I would never say that things have not changed at all, and the fact that were here with police cars everywhere and streets blocked off, because theyre uprising for the same movement that she was a part of. Reporter crystal fleming is an author and professor of sociology at new yorks stony brook university, and like so many is bearing witness to a national reckoning. To see all that we are still seeing in 2020, it should devastate you. It should make you question everything that you have been taught. It should make you question what it means to be a human being. Reporter questions with uncomfortable answers and truths for a country reeling from a pandemic that disproportionately claims black and brown lives, record unemployment for people of color, and protests, stemming from the Police Killing of george floyd in minneapolis, the latest death of a black man at the hands of Law Enforcement officers. I feel the collective anguish of centuries and generations of black people who have had to survive this and have had to deal with people celebrating these myths of what our country is. Right . The myth that this is a country of freedom when we know that we have been unfree for so long. White america in particular has a long storied history of waking up briefly to this stuff and then hitting the Snooze Button and going back to bed. Reporter tim wise says its called white privilege. He is an antiracism activist and the author of white like me. And so, if people of color are being stopped and frisked and racially profiled, those of us who are white who may be doing the very same thing are not under suspicion, are not stopped, are not frisked, are not profiled and are not arrested. Reporter wise says for white americans, the standards are different at times so is the outcome. I was thinking about this when Ahmaud Arbery was tracked down and killed by those men in georgia because they thought because he had been on a construction site that somehow he was up to no good. Ive gone on construction sites other than my own homes many times. When i was a teenager, i went on them regularly to smoke weed, to drink underage. I doubt very sear lus i i would have been arrested and i certainly would not have ended up dead in the street. An africanamerican man is threatening my life. Reporter it played out in central park when amy cooper called the police because chris cooper, a birdwatcher, had asked her to put her dog on a leash. Im being threatened by a man please send the cops immediately i think it probably happens every day. Reporter alicia galvez, a professor who lives near central park, says white people weaponize their privilege. Ive moved through academic institutions, through universities, without anyone questioning whether i deserve to be there, whether i earned my spot there, and i know that my students, my colleagues of color, my friends have been questioned as to whether they earned their place. To have to justify the place that youve earned is a tax that i dont pay. Reporter but it is for people like mark whitaker. Ive had that experience a lot of walking into a store and people looking at me. Are you a shoplifter or whatever . Reporter whitaker is a media executive. He was also the first black editor at Newsweek Magazine and, like me, hes a urge fa. So to me, its the most heartbreaking thing on earth to tell these young beautiful boys that people who dont even know them hate them. The talk. The talk. Is is reality. Its the worst thing ever. My dad gave my brother and me the talk, and his term was lippy. He said, never get lippy with a Police Officer under any circumstances even if you think youre in the right and theyre in the wrong. I cant breathe reporter what is happening now has played out for decades, and whittaker says its often the same event that triggers it. Every single major episode of racial unrest, what people call riots, that we remember in recent history with the exception of the ones that happen after dr. King was shot, started with a police incident. Harlem in 1964, watts in 1965, atlanta and cleveland in 1966. It is our original sin as a country and one that i think probably we will always be wrestling with frankly. Reporter so whats next . Crystal fleming says, if change has to be made, it must come from within. Maybe in recognizing the humanity and the dignity of this black person, you can come to recognize a bit more about your own human dignity. Reporter there are people with good will in their hearts who say, ive been privileged. Ive lived this life. What can i do . It might be the place that we work. Pauley it happened this past week, the loss of an artist who was truly all wrapped up in his work. Christo died sunday of an undisclosed cause in new york city, his home for more than half a century. A cold war refugee from communist bulgaria, christo went by his first name alone. With his wife and artistic partner, jeanneclaude, he created a series of massive and eyecatching projects, including, but hardly limited to, matching umbrella displays in california and japan. By now, youve probably seen all the most intense and shocking moments. But did you see this . Actual footage of protesters just walking. This march happened to be in waco, texas, but we found lots of remarkably unremarkable video of largely peaceful protests across the nation. From small towns like wenatchee, washington to big cities like newark, new jersey, where there were no arrests. We saw punches thrown, mostly at the sky, and outraged channeled, mostly into chants. Black lives matter reporter we saw a lot of police doing nothing wrong. And a lot of protesters doing everything right. We can do this peacefully and we can do it because we got strength in numbers reporter in los angeles, they took the notion of a peaceful protest to a whole new letous. Adding in yoga. In houston, some marched by horseback, while on maui, they gathered on surf boards at sunset. And so it was, in their own way, in all 50 states, people of all colors all joined together, often by the thousands or, in this case, by herself. 80yearold leada Austin Foster was the only one to march in palm beach, florida, on tuesday, where a Police Officer cited her for not drinking enough fluids and gave her a water bottle. And those are just some of the moments that have gone largely unreported this week. Moments of tolerance, fortitude, and restraint. Still no single moment can sum up the wild week that was, whether our nation devolved or evolved will lie in the eye of the beholder. But no matter what your takeaway, i believe you will find hope in this last scene. Newark, new jersey, a guy with a baseball bat.
