The Trump Campaign is pushing back after President Trump was criticized for drawing a parallel between a surprisingly good jobs report and george floyd friday. The u. S. Economy added 2. 5 million jobs last month. The president is declaring victory saying he was right that the economy would quickly bounce back once coronavirus lockdowns started to lift. Ben tracy is at the white house this morning. Ben, good morning. Reporter good morning. These jobs numbers are certainly unexpected but very welcome news for the white house. This has been a rough week for the president. Hes been widely criticized by both democrats and republicans for his response to the racial issues that are roiling the country. Even i was surprised by there one. This was better than i thought. I thought it would be okay, but i didnt know this. Reporter President Trump was clearly energized by the much betterthanexpected jobs numbers. A bright spot in a week where the white house has been the focus of large protests, turning the area surrounding it into a fortress of fences and armed guards. This is the largest monthly jobs increase in american history. Think of that. Thats a long time, right . Reporter economists had expected the economy to shed more than eight million jobs in may, and the Unemployment Rate to soar to nearly 20 . Instead, the economy added 2. 5 million jobs, and the Unemployment Rate fell to 13. 3 . 30 million americans are still out of work, but during his economic victory lap in the rose garden, the president seemed to imply that george floyd would be pleased with the jobs report. Hopefully george is looking down and saying theres a great thing happening for our country. A great day for him, a great day for everybody. Reporter the white house later claimed the president was talking about the fight for equal justice, not the jobs numbers. Former Vice President joe biden did not see it that way. George floyds last words, i cant breathe, i cant breathe, have echoed across this nation. And quite frankly, around the world. President trump says his plan to combat racism in america is a strong economy. Reporter President Trump is spending the weekend here at the white house. So he will likely see and hear the tens of thousands of protesters that are expected to take to the streets of the natio Nations Capital today. Ben, thank you. Here to talk about those surprising unemployment numbers is cbs news Senior Business analyst jill schlesinger. Jill, good morning. Lets start with just this idea we thought it was going to be worse. How did economists get it so wrong . Well, i think that there was a real interesting timing issue. And that is that when we had the april report, not a lot of the ppp money had been distributed, and when the may report came out, we know that there was a lot more federal assistance. So more people were able to come on board into the labor force. 1. 4 million americans, so more than half of those 2. 5 million jobs were in food and drinking establishments. That is sort of that part of it. The Unemployment Rate interesting because when we talk about the unemployent rate, we are relying on households to tell us why they are unemployed. And the Labor Department itself said they believe that this Unemployment Rate which did drop to 13. 3 could be 3 Percentage Points higher if people properly counted themselves as the reasons why they were unemployed. Thats why we should look at the broader rate that captures people like part timers who want fulltime work. That number is 21 f 2. 2 . Probably a more accurate guide to how many people are out of work, nearly 20 million americans, dana. Jill, are there also racial disparitis in unemployment that were counted for that you can see . Absolutely. We saw this in the first report. This is a longterm trend. So if you look at the Unemployment Rate among White Americans only, the Labor Department does break this out, so its helpful to look at that. The White AmericanUnemployment Rate is 12. 4 . The black worker Unemployment Rate is 16. 8 . So its much higher. And that discrepancy has widened since the pandemic. We also know, by the way, that that gap also exists with wages. If you look at Median Household Income for the median white household, its up over 70,000. If you look at the black household, its 41,000. Nearly a 30,000 gap which i think continues to be a real problem. It could also be a source for a lot of these protests in that the inequal feeling among many black americans, it is pervasive with not just the police but also economic inequality. Interesting points. Overall, jill, the market new is surging for the year. The dow is down 5 , the s p is down 1 , the nasdaq is actually up 9. 4 . The nasdaq 100 is actually at a record high. But as we know, the stock market is not necessarily the economy. Can you compare or talk about where you think the economys at right now at this stage in the pandemic . Well, we are still in a recession. But what happens is as an investor you look 12, 18 months ahead of time. And investors are betting on a recovery over that period of time. You mentioned the nasdaq informative because it looks like those Tech Companies that survive, those generalized companies that are doing online work, they will thrive in the future. Thats why were seeing the nasdaq be the biggest leader. Look, again, the stock market is not the economy. We are in a recession. It is going to be sluggish coming out. But if you are looking at your retirement account this weekend, its a little bit of an improvement. Okay, jill schlesinger. Thank you very much. Michelle, over to you.
