Of the center for the arts across the street. It was a power station that was converted into a beautiful contemporary building. It has been on this site for almost 12 years and it is about interpreting the contemporary jewish experience, we are constantly looking at what that means, and how do we discuss that. What are the ways in which the Jewish Community sees the arts and that world view as an example. Lovely, and daniel is a famous architect. Yes. And out of europe . Originally from europe. And what are some of the ways in which the museum functions. We are essentially a jewish Art Institution with a jewish point of view. Much of what we show is contemporary art and culture art, and pop art a little bit. This is, for instance right now we have a variety of exhibitions looking at contemporary art, pop culture and jewish history in the bay area. Contemporary Jewish Museum is interesting sequence of the words. I think one of the interesting things about this particular museum it actually does not house its own Permanent Collection. It was decided it would be a noncollecting institution so it was not held to what jewish used to look like. Not that there is anything wrong with it, we are very fortunate that another Jewish Museum has a collection that we can collaborate. In a region we have the museum with a Permanent Collection in the broader bay area. Can you talk about the kinds of programming that happen at the museum and things that people can take advantage of. Sure, we are a Family Friendly museum. We value families and contemporary art and we have a lot of great programming and the art bash happens on a quarterly basis. It is a program for families and they come in for free with art activities and ways to interact with the exhibitions, there are programs that are talks and lectures that expand the ideas and exhibitions, we have a phone series, we have all sorts of things. So lets take a quick break and come back in just a moment. C1 good morning and welcome back to mosaic. We are in the middle of a wonderful conversation about the contemporary Jewish Museum. Welcome back. Thank you. Lets talk about what is new. Well, we opened just aek a gn exhibition we are excited aboute american style. The life of levi strauss. An immigrant, starting this company, and sort of looking at the influence and how it played out in the early california and San Francisco history, and then it expands into the global influence of levis jeans. So jewish history, fashion history and San Francisco history. Fascinating. A lot of people didnt know that levi strauss started here in the bay area and based in San Francisco as what became its world headquarters. Absolutely the First Factory was at 415 market street. We have Something Interesting in the world of social media, it is sizzle and lets look at the sizzle reel and it is on the exhibit. We live in the every day, we love them, a canvas for self expression. How did the blue jean become a culture icon . It started with a jewish immigrant. Rockers to rebels, hippies to hip hop. The birth of the blue jean and San Francisco, the city where it all began. What a great sizzle reel. What will someone see at the exhibit . Well, they will see as they walk into the exhibition, they will see this amazing panoramic that is an image of San Francisco as he saw it when he got here. I think his studio was around this area. Interesting. And then you see some examples of early bridging from the 1800s. They are beautifully preserved they look like something you would spend 300 on now, but they are the very earliest of these jeans and they look, it so interesting because they really look like the ones you wear with the rivets and the pockets and the patch. It is still exactly like it was. I dont know if you know this question, but we as a public know, but, they were originally designed to be a workers pant. Absolutely. And then overtime became what when we might think of as a fashion statement. Absolutely. The company levi strauss is really good at creating that transformation and were able to contribute to the creating of this iconic American West style of the cowboy and if you look at these old movies from the 1930s, john wayne and wearing the jeans and establishing what American Fashion looks like and there are a lot of examples of that in the exhibition and it moves into more contemporary fashion and things that madonna wore and steve jobs jeans and lauren hills jeans and one of my favorite pieces is not actually jeans it is a Leather Jacket worn by albert einstein. We got it from the archive and they basically supplied many things for the exhibition but this is a very, very special get. So einsteins jacket he bought off of the rack in a store . I think so. He is photographed on the cover of time life wearing it. How did it go from einsteins closethearchiv. I e story. She was told it was going up for auction in london, and so she flew to london and bid on it and was able to acquire it for the archive. Does this exhibit travel, i know the contemporary Jewish Museum doesnt house the collection. How did it come about . It is really everything we are all about. It is about the history of San Francisco, jewish San Francisco, the founders of jewish San Francisco, so it like it was something that in some form or another had been thought about since the museum started. So it finally did come about and also it helped that we established a strong relationship with levi strauss and the archive. This is ann put together for us. Yes, absolutely. We will take a quick break and continue the conversation. Good morning and welcome back, we are in the middle of a conversation about the contemporary Jewish Museum. And welcome back. Thank you. So lets continue our conversation and talk about the exhibit. Sure, well, one of the things that we do whenever we have an exhibition is through programming, family programming, and access programs, we ha qui a lot and i recommend your viewers to check our website to sort of see the full expanse of the programming. But i would love to share a few examples. For levi strauss, a rich exhibit with so many stories there is a lot to unpack. So one of our series that we do is something called the gallery, and these are short 20 minutes talks during lunch time about the stores and ideas, and we have many of those coming up and more adding all of the time, and these are free for any of our members. They can come to these as often as they want and part of the benefits of membership. Some of the ones we have is a talk on the chinese exclusion act with the historian from the Chinese Museum in San Francisco. The aids quilt that they put together dg the aids crisis. The talk on denim for people who are super excited about salvage and stitches and we have a talk about that and many, many more. Another series is a phone series. Thinking about the myth of the American West. Showing a series of classic westerns. We are showing high noon that is considered by scholars now an allegory of what happened to the writers in hollywood during the red scare. An incredible movie. We are showing the misfits and marilyn monroe, and then we are ending it up with easy rider, as we have moved out of the west as a place we are horse back riding and getting on our motorcycles and riding into the sunset. We have several talks and lectures. The historian who wrote the biography of levi strauss. A conversation with laurie star. And then like i said, so many and the last one is a musical program, because at the contemporary Jewish Museum we love to connect our exhibitions with Living Artists and putting another a tribute to the musician, the you havethe jewish cowboy. A lot of local talent, and that is in the summer time. That will be very exciting. So it is such a beautiful rich array of choices for the entire community to be enriched. It is really a venue for Arts Education and arts experience that are both formal and informal and certainly something you are interested in and being part of the community. Educate, entertain and inspire. Wonderful. Perfect. Lets continue and talk about what else the museum is doing. Sure, so, tomorrow we open up a new exhibition and it is called predicting the past, the lost years. This exhibition is an immerseive photographer, and his mid 19th century studio, and it is filled with beautiful photographs. I think we have i think we have some of those to share. Okay, we will take a break and come back in just a moment. Welcome back to mosaic. We are in the middle of a wonderful conversation with gravity goldberg. Lets talk about the zohar exhibit. It is predicting the past, the zohar studios the lost years. It is a Los Angeles Based artist steven burkman, and the exhibition looks at the collection of zohar, and his Lower East Side studio and we see a collection of beautiful turn of the century photographs, and it also includes a cabin of curiosity and objects. So you are entering the past and predicting the past, so to speak, as you experience it. This is called the wandering. Okay, and it is one of the wonderful things about the photographs is they are taken with the technique where you take a plate of glass and coat both sides of it with a substance, it is very scientific. Silver nitrate is one of them and you put them in the camera and take the picture while the plate is still wet. It is a very complicated process. These are pictures of the past. This is another one . This is. And what is this . I dont know the title. It is in the exhibit . Yes, and this one . Yeah, these are photographs from the studio that burkman yes, they are a collection of photographs for zohar studios that he was able to recreate. Yeah, they are extraordinary. So, these are recreations of zohars photographs and in some way there is a mixture of a temporary reproduction. It is a bit of a suspension of belief as you walk into this. It is an artist installation and the whole thing is in its way u to, a go into this immersive experience, and these objects and props, and they are the technique that were used at that time. So it is a visit to the past. Yes, it is a visit to theto the past. In this photographers world and you walk through the rendition of zohars creation of his art. Of capturing this world of the past. So it is something that you really have to walk in and experience yourself. It is very much in the tradition of the artist created museums, there is a museum of technology and it resonates with that closely, and if you get a better grasp of it the viewers might want to come to a program that is happening, so steven burkman will be in conversation with the writer on sunday april 26th. What anestingcept. Pdooing to a museum and they see a painting. An ancient or contemporary painting but you are talking about a different form of art that you walk into the creation of art and then seeing what the art was and it is a layering between absolutely. Yeah, you said that very well. And is he a photographer . He is, he works in hollywood and is the world expert in the wet plate. He reconstructed this process but it is his photographs . Interesting. Yeah, that is the classic art question that someone comes with. Thank you so much.
