Begin with breaking news in the east bay, and Investigation Underway right now after police fired a suspect who jumped onto the tracks on a bart station in an apparent attempt to get away. It happened at the el cerrito del norte bart station this afternoon. The station has since been closed. Kpixs joe vasquez is live at the scene with breaking details. Reporter the station is still closed, as you can see there is a Large Police Presence here as they are investigating this officer involved shooting. Police say this started around 2 oclock this afternoon when they got a call for a domestic disturbance on board the train. An argument between a young man and a woman. The bart police chief says officers arrived with guns drawn and confronted the suspect. What happened next, we talked to several witnesses about that, including one who did not want to be identified. The train operator let us know we will be held here for a couple of minutes. Literally after that transmission went off you hear them running. Thats when they ran out and thats when i went out behind them. As soon as i poked my head out all you hear is about 67 shots went off. About 78 times and then you just smell gunpowder. Horrible, it was horrific. They didnt have to do that to him. They didnt. The man jumped onto the tracks and kept running and was asked to stop but chose not to. Would you think about all of this . I appreciate what our Police Department does. They keep us safe. Theres always two sides to every story. I just saw my ankle. I dont know what went down prior to that. Is a possible the young man pulled his weapon and they were reacting to that . No, he was on the train with his girlfriend. They were riding the train just like anybody else and you can clearly see that he wasnt trying to put out his weapon or anything, because as he was running from the police he was holding onto his pants. He didnt want it to come out because he knows when he jumps out of the tracks it must have come to his pocket and thats when they started shooting. Reporter an ambulance rushed the young man to the hospital with critical injuries. We talked to several witnesses who said that the young woman who was with him was screaming and yelling out with officers and anyone who would listen that he was too young for this. He was 17 years old. We are still trying to verify his age with authorities. Speaking of authorities, the police chief of bart, ed alvarez , had a News Conference here a few minutes ago. Heres how he explained the confrontation. Officers got onto the platform, challenged that individual who then ran off the train, down the platform and onto our trackway. At which point a gun was produced by the suspect. Officers ultimately shot, recovering a gun and the suspect has not been transported to the hospital with lifethreatening injuries. We asked the police chief to elaborate on the phrase that he used, which is that the suspect quote produced the gun. Did it mean that he pointed it at Police Officers or in a way that threatened them . The police chief said he wouldnt elaborate until he had a chance to actually see the cameras that are supposed to be on the tracks and that might have caught this entire incident on surveillance camera. Right, that will produce some information and obviously the weapon has been recovered and that will be an investigation. What happens with Train Service . I know its been shut down for quite some time now. Reporter right, we are going on three hours with the train being shut down and it is still shut down. What bart tells us, as they are trying to open one of the tracks so they can at least get trains going back and forth , the officers are literally up there on the tracks as we speak investigating the shooting. We will continue and follow up on this at 6 oclock and throughout the evening. Lets take a live look outside. We are halfway through the month and parts of the bay area have been bone dry. Looks like were kind of on pace to have one of the driest februarys on record. Are we still on that track . We are on track for that, but it doesnt mean we are going to go there because we are only halfway through the month. Having said that, if we look out for the next week and a half it doesnt look like theres any rain coming our way, so the question starts to be asked, have we ever done this before . Gone the entire month of february without rain . And the answer is yes, one time back in 1864. These are the records for downtown San Francisco, which go back quite far. You can see the top five year. Lets hope we dont have to join this list. The first victim was just jogging on the embarcadero when she was stabbed in the back. Its terribly shocking. I know people who jog here and i walk here frequently and i consider it very safe.
