Now our original series project home, a bay area photographer has given away thousands of free head shots to homeless clients. She tells our Susie Steimle about the project thats not only changed her life, but also helped her subjects see themselves in a different light. This is the section for homeless vets. Reporter when virginia becker first started taking professional head shots of homeless clients, she never imagined it would be her own inhibitions on full display. What was the first shoot like for you . Were you nervous . I was because it was still us and them. Im so embarrassed to say that. Reporter like many people still do, when virginia saw a homeless person on the sidewalk, she used to cross the street to avoid them. Id roll my eyes when i saw a blue tarp on the sidewalk and go why do they do that . Why dont they just go to a shelter . Reporter she now sees the homeless through an entirely different lens. She started working with the downtown streets team several years ago, a nonprofit that connects homeless to much needed resources. Shes now given away nearly 5,000 free head shots to homeless clients. She calls it the blue tarp project. Certainly there would be more glamorous pictures if they were black and white and gritty and told a story, but i dont think that does any good and sort of perpetuates the myth of what homelessness is. This is real. These are real people. Reporter she wants her autopsied yens to see the homeless as they audience to see the homeless as they really are. I see pride, when i see that picture i see pride. Reporter its hard to imagine now. I like what i see when im looking at me. Reporter but sophia wasnt always so comfortable in front of the camera. She first lost housing when her mom passed away. That loss drove her back into an abusive relationship in order to stay housed. All of that abuse changed the way she saw herself. I really didnt feel like i mattered anymore. Reporter so she started sleeping on the streets, hiding at bart stations, afraid to inconvenience her family, she didnt ask for help. I would lie to my family. I would tell them i was staying at my friends house i dont want to intrude. Reporter thats when she found the downtown streets team. I couldnt go anywhere else but up. And you did it, and its not over. Reporter in a matter of months she found a job and apartment. To this day shes one of the fastest graduates the program has ever seen. The worst time of my life ended up being the best time of my life because i got it myself, through me. Reporter sophia remembers what it felt like to be invisible and juneed by strangers in a snap. So it means so much to her that someone in the past might have chosen to avoid her gaze is instead the person who helped her feel truly seen. Thats what happens with pictures. They show who you truly are. I couldnt see i had selfworth until i started getting these pictures. I wonder how many people could be really honest with themselves and say they see everyone exactly the same. I couldnt say that before, but i can now. Thank you. Reporter the blue tarp project is on display at the mlk library in san jose through the end of this month. After that virginia is hoping to find a new home for the project, and shes hoping for an even bigger space so she can add more educational information about what the region is doing to help solve the homeless crisis.
