Reporter today after months of debate and Public Comment fire station 30 and union city finally closed. Now firefighters that are upset with the closure turning it in to an issue of community safety. The message in this neighborhood is unmistakable. The Firefighters Union is using this van parked outside the now closed station 30 to 1 people that they are now at risk. Today the mayor and city manager both showed up to answer back. Yes people may be upset. However, based on the data it was the right decision at this juncture because it is underutilized. Those facts will not change. Reporter the city voted to close fire station 30 because it does not get enough calls for service. A recent study revealed only an average of 1. 7 calls in every 24hour period. Three of the fire stations will be asked to pick up those calls. There may be engines stored here that will be moved to other stations as needed and as required the Fire Department is going to be part of the decisionmaking process. Reporter we were there yesterday after nine firefighters who worked out of that station were packing up. The Firefighters Union president says it is not just nearby emergency calls that make it important. Of the other three Fire Companies are tied up on emergencies the station is there to provide backup as needed.
