>> an hour and a half or a santa photo. how can you say no? >> most stores close at 6 pm but a couple will remain open until midnight. a 911 call about the theft of a pickup tailgate led to a major holiday arrest in placer county when roseville police stopped a man and found the stolen tailgate. they discovered about 100 packages. they had addresses in sacramento in placer county. the two men were taken into custody. this is a new tactic for porch pirates. >> what happens is they show up and they canvassed the neighborhood driving around and appearing like they are delivery drivers. instead of dropping packages, they're going to porches and stealing them. >> police advise using an amazon locker or selected ups or fedex facility as a drop off location. holiday donation to help needy families in oakland. a tech ceo has donated $15,000, enough to cover the lunch that's of hundreds of students. he hopes to and inspire wealthier tech companies to contribute to education and help keep out risk at risk youth in school. it's great how they focus on homelessness but aren't paying attention to the root cause. he has a message for mark zuckerberg. >> i would like to see him to come to oakland and tell the oakland unified school district , you will no longer have to let go of a teacher because of budget cuts. you no longer have to worry about kids education, their lunch, supplies because you know what? >> she moved around a lot since the fire. >> we lost everything. >> they are the first to call the temporary homes home. >> i am thrilled. i don't even have words. >> that was tiring to walk through the doors like you know i just dropped. >> they renovated eight of these fully furnished 1000 square foot homes for fire survivors. they can live here for up to a year and a half while trying to find permanent housing. that will take more time and money. >> it takes time to first get the money and then second to you know get the developer and contractor. >> for now they are home for the holidays with the tree that shines bright. >> this is the first time it felt kind of not so empty. >> i thought this would be the year that we could celebrate. we couldn't afford it i thought. i thought we wouldn't get a tree. i thought we would be in the car. >> brian hill reporting. fort francis celebrated midnight mass at the vatican and delivered a message of hope to the faithful. he said that god loves everyone and we should not wait for neighbors to be good. before we do good for them. thousands of visitors flock to the west bank town of bethlehem to celebrate christmas eve. police gathered for festivities or excuse me people gathered. the christmas tree in major square believe to be marking jesus's birthplace. let's look at san francisco with the third night of hanukkah . that is celebrated in union square. you can see as they light another candle on the 25 foot menorah in the center of the square. is local tradition was started and 1975 by concert promoter bill graham. we will stay here for a minute and see as they light one of the candles. again union square this is been a lifelong tradition. this started and obviously they have concert music as well. this started by a concert promoter. we will move on. we will check in later. with temperatures plunging for christmas, it may seem tempting to use your leftover wrapping paper is canceling that air- quality officials are warning not to do it. burning wrapping paper is actually illegal. it is often made using synthetic inks and plastic film and metallic finishes that release toxic compounds when burned. that doesn't mean you should use would either. the advise people from reef rain using wood serves stoves to keep the air quality in check. since where talk about the atmosphere, let's look at the snowpack and squaw valley. a lot of snow is accumulating. the resorts is saying all of this is making for pretty good conditions for skiers during the christmas season and beyond. a little more snow coming tomorrow. second half of the day. i will start off with that but i think what is far more interesting is the fact that it will snow in the local area. >> a little dusting? >> that's where it will be. it won't be a lot but the last time this happened, we had so many pictures of people getting stuck trying to drive up. this will be enough snow that if you think it sounds like a great idea to get on mount hamilton, that will likely be the situation again, make sure you know how to handle yourself on snow. i mentioned we will see snow in the sierra. that second half the down christmas and that's not much. that's two inches of snow coming to donner pass. caltrans ease that for breakfast. this should not be too much of a headache. there are no winter weather advisories. now the light snow will fall in the second half of the day. it will be great. speaking of watching the snow, the starts at midnight. i highlighted the three high peaks that show up in the bay area. hamilton is the one that juliet mentioned. that's 4200 fixed. and there is mount diablo and there is loma prieta. 3700 feet. watch what happens. not a lot. but the snow from for now morning until about 10 in the morning is accumulating to where maybe mount hamilton gets an inch. at the dusting for loma prieta and maybe a dusting for mount diablo. it comes through the first half of the day tomorrow. it will just look pretty from a distance. let's talk about the real impact. that is the rain. we showed you the band sitting off the coast. that looks like it could bring a few light showers but it won't be much. that will get absorbed by the mountains of the peninsula. that is the more meaningful stuff. if we take that from live doppler put into futurecast, it picks up on it beautifully. and it's really not until we get to 10:00 tonight that the leading edge comes across the bay area. let's watch it. at 10:00, mena clock midnight, the best time. then once we've gotten to 7:00 in the morning, most of this is to the east. this could be a rain event that happens while we are sleeping. then it is still probably still going at 10:00 tomorrow morning. by that point you have to count on showers. by noon it will finish up. it will have left about half an inch of rain for the north bay. let's come to the south bay and check the situation. totals are about as good and maybe a quarter of an inch. it won't be as cold christmas morning. because the storm is bringing in the clouds and that will hold it down. we still go down to 39 but that's the only 30s. this morning we had plenty of 30s. so a little bit warming for the morning lows but not much different for the daytime high. you can get outside in the second half without getting rained on. the next chance of rain shows up on sunday. another way to say it is that it won't rain for three days. it will get cold in the mornings again. and then light showers for sunday. back to you. unfortunately no rain as we head back to union square. the third candle being lit. it is the 45th and will lighting of the menorah at union square. >> it's named in honor of bill graham who got the idea in 1975. among the special guests are bill graham colleagues and musical performance by jerry's kosher deli. and for special guests. i wonder who they are?
