Announcer its the late show with Stephen Colbert tonight, stephen welcomes Saoirse Ronan and tom brokaw featuring jon batiste and banned bannedstayhuman, and now lived sullivan theater in new york city, its Stephen Colbert cheers and applause theme song playing stephen hello welcome up there, down here, hello, wonder woman thank you cheers and applause please have a seat, everybody thank you so much welcome one and all, in here, out there, to the late show. Im your shows Stephen Colbert. It is cheers and applause oh, its exciting. Its wonderful. Its crisp in the air. Its 16 days till christmas, but weve got a little present today ahead of time from the Inspector General of the justice department. You see, for months now, we have been talking about trump and ukraine, so its easy to forget about trump and russia. In this case, trumps insistence that the 2016 russia probe started only because of antitrump bias in the f. B. I. That was the real scandal. Well, today, after months of investigating, the d. O. J. Inspector general released his report, finding no evidence of bias. Concluding that the f. B. I. Had sufficient evidence to lawfully open the russia investigation. Okay, there it is. cheers and applause end of story truth wins. This wasnt an overthrow of the government. This wasnt even an attempted overthrow, and no one was in on it. Im sorry, you wanted to Say Something . This was an overthrow of government, this was an attempted overthrow and a lot of people were in on it. Stephen okay. I didnt read that part. So, the deep state was trying to overthrow your government when they started the russia investigation in july 2016, before you were elected. Elected. as trump thats how deep it goes, they were trying to overthrow the government before i was even it that way, barack obama would no longer be in office to graciously allow a peaceful transition of power im not gonna make that mistake. laughter keep in mind, nothing hes saying is in the actual report. He is, once again, just naming an alternate reality that he wants to exist. On one level, obviously, this is fun and ha ha ha but its also really dangerous, because why have an election if next november 3, he can just say as trump i just saw the election results. I won all 50 states, plus, manitoba. Thank you, patriotic beavers. laughter well, two can play at that game. Did you hear whats in the i. G. Report . Its much worse than any of us imagined. Trump confessed to colluding with the russians to influence the 2016 election, and stopping the Golden Globes from nominating any women for best director. Come on laughter the report also has new information about former british spy, and bland, james bland christopher steele. laughter steele put together the infamous dossier accusing trump of, how do i put this tactfully, having a big wet prostitute peepee party. Was at tactful no. Well probably edit this part out. laughter but according to the report, steele wasnt biased against trump. Steele stated that if anything he was favorably disposed toward the trump family before he began his research because he had visited a trump Family Member at trump tower and been friendly with the Family Member for some years. Okay, a trump Family Member with friends. laughter so not eric. laughter turns out it was ivanka. Theres also this smaller trump story, hes being impeached. And ill tell you all about it in tonights installment of don and the giant impeach. cheers and applause i need some good news, ive got people trying to impeach me. Stephen its the second day of live hearings for the judiciary committee. They havent drafted the articles of impeachment yet, but democrats say trumps impeachable offenses include abuses of power through selfdealing, betrayal of National Security in the service of foreign interests, and corruption of our elections that undermine our democratic system. Or as trump put it promises made, promises kept. Stephen now, we cant predict whats going to happen in the future, but evidently axios can, because they say, nobody weve spoken to, from either party, thinks theres even a remote chance trump gets convicted in a senate trial. Its like the movie titanic. No matter how many times i shout stop having sex and watch out for the iceberg it ends the same way the ship goes down, and i get escorted out of another movie theater. laughter despite impeachment, trump is busy campaigning for 2020. On saturday night, he traveled to florida to address the israeliamerican council. This was an important speech, because among Jewish Voters, trumps Approval Rating is 29 . Which among Jewish Voters is slightly less popular that mel gibson. laughter just a hair. Just a hair cheers and applause oh, yes. Thats right. Stephen trump did not help himself when he started his speech to again, the israeliamerican council like this i know you very well. Youre brutal killers. laughter stephen as trump how am i doing . Is this on . How am i doing . We get that number up to 30 yet . Wait, i can fix this. Youre also terrifying monsters we cant get wet or feed afte midnight. bleep cheers and applause piano riff im sorry, i confuse you with gremlins all the time. laughter at one point, trump addressed the challenges hes faced brokering peace in the middle east. I love deals, and i used to hear the toughest of all deals is peace with israel and the palestinians. They say thats the toughest of all deals. But if Jared Kushner cant do it, it cant be done. laughter stephen really . If jared cant do it it cant be done . as trump that man does the impossible. I mean, he married ivanka. Do you know how many people said you cant marry ivanka . my lawyers, my pastor, the elvis at the las vegas wedding chapel. cheers and applause piano riff he did it. He sealed the deal. Jon no, you cant do it applause stephen you can tell trump has been anxious recently because on sunday, he fired off 105 tweets and retweets. Thats such a rich and important record for future historians. Now we know what the commander in chief thinks about m. M. A. Fighter tito ortiz defeating Alberto Rodriguez via rear naked choke hold. laughter it reminds me of lincolns stirring words, a house divided against itself cannot withstand a roundhouse kick to the trachea. laughter mmhmm. applause cheers and applause trumps sunday tweetathon included works of art, like this stunning portrait of his head grafted onto the beefy bod of rocky balboa. Trump is just like rocky, except he cant climb steps, and hes fighting for russia. laughter jon oh cheers and applause piano riff stephen he also whipped out his newest liesplanation about what he meant during his phone call with zelensky when he said, i would like you to do us a favor, though. Read the transcripts also, see where i say us our country as opposed to me meaning me. laughter thanks for clearing that up, mr. President. as trump my preferred pronouns are me, me, me, and me. Because im all me think about. laughter cheers and applause i may not be much, but im all i think about. laughter applause in the wake of saturdays north Korean Missile test, trump also tweeted, kim jong un is too smart and has far too much to lose, everything actually, if he acts in a hostile way. He signed a strong denuclearization agreement with me in singapore. He does not want to void his special relationship with the president of the united states. What . Hes claiming kim jong un wouldnt do something hes already done. You know what they say, denials not just a river trump couldnt find on a map. laughter cheers and applause really . Really . Thats where you draw the line. Really . Jon i like that a lot. Stephen north korea wasnt anewsed at trumps tweet. A Senior North Korean official called trump, a heedless and erratic old man, adding, the time when we cannot but call him a dotard again may come. Oooh, they might break out the d word laughter and if that doesnt work, theyll break out more archaic insults. We refuse to negotiate with this poltroonish loitersack, this wifflewaffle fustylugs, who doesnt have the sense of a ninnyhammer, you gillywetfoot fribble laughter cheers and applause look em up theyre all real words prepare your child for the s. A. T. S this year applause more news about trump personal attorney and scooby doo monster whos scarier without the mask rudy giuliani. Giuliani spent the week in ukraine. The collusion there is lovely this time of year. But now hes back, and says he never wanted this mission it chose him. I looked into ukraine because. Stephen as rudy laughter quick, rudy, think of something, but dont obviously lie. laughter it was thrown at me. Put in my lap. Stephen okay, that actually sounds true. I believe it was thrown at him because i dont think anyone would willingly get in his lap. laughter giuliani took issue with people saying hes corrupt, adding, i really try very hard to be superethical and always legal. Does he think those are legal terms . laughter as lawyer your honor, my clleadsmennocen we humbly request infinity freedom. laughter weve got a great show for you tonight. cheers and applause Saoirse Ronan is here. When we return, trump talks toilets. cheers and applause cheers and applause band playing Stephen Jon Batiste and stay human, everybody cheers and applause nice jon, you know, theres no doubt weve got the best guests on late night tv. Jon oh, yeah stephen i am grateful to everybody who comes on the show. We always have a good time. Jon yeah. Stephen two of my favorite guests are on tonight. The lovely talented Saoirse Ronan is here tonight with little women. I saw last night, i had to hydrate halfway through, so beautiful. Jon wow. Stephen and our old friend tom brokaw is here tonight. cheers and applause a mandarin of journalism. Jon mandarin of excellence. Stephen absolutely. He has a new book about the fall of Richard Nixon. I cant wait to find out what happened to nixon. Jon yeah. Stephen dont tell me how watergate ends. laughter stephen folks, on friday, trump hosted a Small Business roundtable, and went on a rant about deregulation, focusing on issues impacting his favorite room in the house. We have a situation where we are looking very strongly at sinks and showers and other elements of bathrooms. laughter stephen as trump i look very strongly at all the elements of bathrooms. For hours every day. All of them. Sinks, showers, everything but the scale. laughter it seems that trump is mad at environmental regulations that limit water use in the bathroom. You turn on the faucet and dont get any water. They take a shower and water comes dripping out, just dripping out, very quietly dripping out. laughter stephen ive never seen the president this mournful. as trump the water comes very quietly dripping out. laughter and then, the silence. laughter and in the silence, you can hear. The thoughts. laughter then trump made the most important statement of his presidency. People are flushing toilets 10 times, 15 times. Stephen 10 times people are flushing toilets 15 times . what . Are they trying to get rid of a body . laughter i dont understand who needs to flush 15 times . laughter okay, yeah, that checks out. laughter cheers and applause piano riff that makes sense volume how did we do it . Volume to be fair, trumps not the first president to focus on americas plumbing crisis ask not what your country can do for you, but what your toilet will do for your doodoo. Flush it once, shame on. Shame on you. Aflush mah cant flush again. Mr. Gorbachev, stay out of that stall. laughter stephen trumps main worry is that lack of water pressure in our bathrooms is hurting americas hygiene. You go into a new building, or a new house or new home and they have standards. Oh well, you cant get water. You cant wash your hands practically, theres so little water comes out of the faucet. And the end result is you leave the faucet on. It takes you much longer to wash your hands. Stephen yes, so true, takes you much longer, and thats time that you could be spending flushing the toilet 15 times laughter but ole chief flush too much has his top men on the toilets. They end up using more water. So e. P. A. Is looking at that very strongly at my suggestion. Stephen as trump toilets clogged again. Call the e. P. A. Have them declare my commode a superfund site. laughter youd better get fema in here, too, cause this bathroom is a disaster. laughter so after confirming that he takes huge dumps and doesnt wash his hands, trump discussed laughter cheers and applause no, no, this is serious. Its a crisis piano riff a crisis jon come on. Stephen no fun trump discussed the big shower in the sky. We are looking very seriously about opening up the standard and, there may be some areas where we may go the other route. Desert areas. But for the most part you have many states that have so much water that comes down, its called rain. laughter stephen yes, its called rain. Thats what happens when god cries. Also when theres thunder, hes trying to flush the toilet 15 times well be right back with Saoirse Ronan. cheers and applause thats a zzzquil pure zzzs sleep. She now plays jo march in little women. Look at me im homely and awkward and i love you, jo. And you would be ashamed. I love you, jo. And we would quarrel. We cant help it even now. Id hate elegant society, youd hate my scribbling, and we would be unhappy and we would wish we hadnt done it and everything would be horrid. Anything more . No, nothing more. All right. Except that teddy, i dont believe i will ever marry. Stephen please welcome back to the late show, Saoirse Ronan cheers and applause band playing stay awake. Stay awake. I know its late but stay awake. I always forget how big it is in here and how cold it is. Stephen yeah. Do you want a blanket or something . Well, i saw helenas interview and she brought a blanket out. Stephen she brought her coat. She brought her coat to lay over her knees. Yes. Id also like a cup of tea. Stephen a cup of tea . Yeah. Stephen can we get a cup of tea for her, please . Thank you very much. Congratulations. This morning you were nominated for a golden globe for your portrayal of jo march. Well deserved. Really beautiful portrait. This was your fourth nomination for the Golden Globes. tis, indeed. Stephen some people like award shows and some find them merely stressful. Do you enjoy them since youre an old hand at them at this point . I have some of them. I think what i have figured out in the last few years is its always more fun if you bring a pal with you. So if you bring somebody and its not like its not just about you losing, because you go and youre either going to win or youre going to lose and you feel liket that. Stephen yes. O when i bring my pal with me, its about having a prosecco and anything else is, like, an added bonus. Stephen if you want to have fun at an awards show bring your 10yearold son. Oh, my gosh, did you do that . Stephen i brought my 10yearold and we went through the red carpet and whole rig ma roll, and my son turned and said, you didnt tell me it was fun laughter who was he excited to meet . Kids dont lie. Stephen who was he excited to meet . Yeah, was he excited to meet anyone . Stephen john oliver. laughter hes a mini you. Stephen a little me. Okay. So little women adapted and directed by the fantastic greta gerwig, who, also, of course, directed you. cheers and applause in ladybird in 2017. Um, jo is a beloved character. Yeah. Stephen shes an iconic character. Several people from ladybird are in. This did you always know you were going to play jo . No, i didnt always know i was going to be jo, but i knew when greta was making little women that i had to be jo, and i was very forward with her, and i had, like, my irish voice in my head going, dont do it dont pursue just apologize then, oh, no, if you want to give it to me, grand. But with this, i think because i know her, and ive grown up with the book like so many people have, especially in america. Stephen people read it in ireland . Yeah. Stephen every girl in eighth grade or seventh grade, Summer Reading list, its little women. Its little women. I dont think its sort of as widespread in ireland, but, i mean, i think everyone really knows about it from other film adoptions and things like that, and we love it, and, so, weve all sort of grown up with it, and then, through, you know, other film versions, we go, oh, im going to read the book, and thats how i was introduced to it. So i just sort of went to one of the award shows and tapped her on the shoulder pretty aggressively and i was, like, turn around, you, and said, you know, youre doing little women, which she knew laughter she knew that, because its her life, and i just said, i just want to let you know that im going to be jo march, so if you want to take time to think about it, fine, but ill be there first in massachusetts. She said, im going to think about it. And she took, like, a week, and i was waiting every day to hear, and she finally emailed me and said, okay, you can be jo. So a very romantic story. Stephen i understand that greta was pregnant through the entire shoot. Yeah. Stephen and you didnt know. None of us newel how did you not know . So we didnt know because she was just, like, amazing, had this incredible command over the set, and it didnt even come into our head. Stephen there are ways to tell a woman is pregnant, by the way. Yes. Stephen i dont know if youve had the talk. laughter how babies were made. Stephen a Firm Handshake laughter yeah, and she must have done that. laughter and she laughter i dont know. Anyway, seven months later stephen we dont know. We dont know what happened. Could have been immaculate. Theres a baby cooking in there and its seven months and none of us knew. One day we were doing one of the attic scenes. Its very hot and we were in and out and there were loads of props and theres no air and it was very, very hot. I looked at her and she had a very thick woolen sort of fulllength dress with a jump over the top and a jacket over the top of that and big boots and tights on and i was, like, are you not, like, absolutely melting . And shes, like, no, im fine and she was in agon in agony, as because she was trying to hide her before. She had this uniform she would wear. Stephen we have your tea right here. You actually got me a cup of tea. Stephen yes. Thank you. Thank you very much. Theres no milk in it. Sorry. laughter helena stephen how do you take your tea . A bit of milk. Stephen a bit of milk. I have purelle. laughter i have advil. I have band aids and i have cough lozenges. Lozenges. Ill have one of those because my throat is quite tickly. Is that going to be annoying what im doing in the interview . Stephen well find out. laughter there are choking theyre a choking hazard. laughter in the movie as we saw in the clip, you are reunited with timothy chalomay. There you are being very loving. It was very sad. Stephen was it good to have the emotional upper hand in this one . Yeah, he was due a little heart break. He gets a lot of love, timothy. I needed to bring him back down to earth. Stephen you also did a scene with meryl streep. I did. Stephen is that intimidating or a joy because shes a lovely person. Shes so nice. Obviously, shes so smarntd she brought shes so smart and she brought so much to this film in scenes she wasnt even in. Theres so much insight she had, a womans intuition during that time and greata would write the nuggets of knowledge down she had. I was ground in the scene. I couldnt have kept it together. She has a poodle called mike the whole time on the scene and that got rid of the attention. There was a little fluffy dog always looking. But as soon as the scene finished and they were checking the gate and we were going to move on to another thing, i remember i was like, yes, great scene, meryl. And i was wandering off and thought, my god, i got to do a scene with meryl streep. I was, like, trying to hold her and he spond to her. Stephen how did she respond. I was saying thank you for this opportunity and letting me do this to you. Shes always been so lovely to me. I met her the first time when i was about 15 and she gave me this hug like everything was going to be all right. Stephen thank you so much for being here. Thank you. Stephen thank you for the lovely performance as jo march. Thank you. Stephen youre welcome. His newest is the fall of Richard Nixon. Please welcome, tom brokaw cheers and applause band playing stephen nice to esee you again. Very nice, nice to be back in this building. Havent been here for a long time. Stephen were so glad to have you here. Glad to be here. Stephen so glad to have you here for your new book the fall of Richard Nixon. You were a White House Correspondent starting when . 1973, the summer. Stephen summer of 73. Where had you just come from . From california. I was a political reporter out there and i had been covering National Politics for some time as well as what i was doing out there. I knew the nixon crowd because most of them came from california. Stephen obvious. Ron, haroldman and others. They had a triumphant first term in a lot of ways. Stephen landslide victory in 72. And then, you know, hue brings took over and they thought they could do whatever they wanted to and however they wanted to. They were breaking and entering. By the time i got there, bob haroldman was on his way to jail, ron was okay at that point but the advisor was on his way to jail, john dean, the president s chief counsel, he was on his way to jail, the president s own partner in law here in new york was on his way to jail. A lot different than what it is now. laughter stephen a lot of people have gone to jail. They have gone to jail at that point, and the difference between then and now is that the president had a tape recording system, and the fact is, once that was found out, there was all kinds of evidence about what was going on behind the scenes, and the difference between them and now, as well, it wasnt 247 on television. You know, we would, as a White House Correspondent, we would get briefed at 10 00 in the morning. I wouldnt go on the air till 6 30 at night for nightly news. I would be working the phones all day to try to find out what, in fact, happened and, when it would go on, it would be very much organized and i could counts on what i was saying stephen go back. What was news like when it was organized and you could count on what you were saying. Take me back to this mythical land. It was a big difference between now and social media. The fact is that this technological change and i do believe that the people ought to have access to stating what they believe and what they want to be involved in, but weve lost control of it because you dont know where its coming from, where its going, what the motivation is, and, so, when you see something, so many people believe it, and so much of it cant be authenticated. Thats a huge difference between then and now. Doesnt mean that those of us who are White House Correspondents or in american journalism have all the answers but we worked hard at determining what happened because we were liable for it at the end of the day and the country paid attention to it on that basis. Now its jump ball 247. Stephen take me back to what it was like in 1973 to be at the white house. How much was there a sense that nixon wasnt going to last . Because hes got one more yeart at that point. He does. Stephen how high was the fever at that point . You say these people are going to jail but thats not nixon. How close had it got ton the president at that point . We knew he was very close to it. Had the famous 18minute tape, for example. Why was it erased . It was erased clumsy because it had stuff about what was going to happen for what he was saying on the tape that day. We didnt go on the air saying he was guilty. We had lunch once a month and would talk, why are they going this direction . And he would raise his eyebrows and say, well, remember, hes guilty, but we didnt go on the air or the paper and say that. We worked diligently to prove what we were reporting on a daily basis. Now, as soon as the president says something, as you know from watching, or the president or any of the his spokesmen Say Something, everybodys on the air 247, hes guilty, hes guilty, hes guilty, or hes not guilty. cheers and applause you know, if you look at the hearing today. Stephen i did not watch the hearings today. Absolutely, i do think you have to keep track of it, but i can also see how it makes the American Voters eyes glaze over because it doesnt seem to be anything but a shown both sides, and i think thats the really dangerous proposition that were dealing with now. Tom, theres a lot of talk, theres sort of some spin being done by the people defending the president saying, well, its too complicated to understand. Essentially, its very simple, though, isnt it . It is stephen he asks for something in exchange for something of value which is a meeting in the white house or a release of the funds and he wanted investigation of his 2016 campaign to his opponents and to his 2020, a likely opponent joe biden, thats the door through with the impeachment walked and blind the door, all evidence seems to be if support of that accusation. Then they make it more complex than that. They say, well, he came back and he changed his language on it. It was ukraine. Who knows where ukraine is. What was that all about. Why would he be asking for Something Like that . It wasnt like breaking and entering which is what we had going on in the white house days of Richard Nixon. Stephen adam schiff said this is much worse than a thirdrate burglary. First rate burglary . It was much worse than that because it was going on in the oval office where they were conspiring to get the money to pay off the burglars and to pay off other people, and it was the president s counsel who was doing that, he was on the tape, it was his chief of staff and domestic advisor involved in all of this. All of that was going on at that time. Stephen one of the things that trump has said, hes exerted sort of blanket executive privilege, keeping anybody from testifying, and, also, declaring sort of immunity from this investigation, that its illegitimate. My understanding is executive privilege, of course, is one of the themes of Richard Nixons defense in the 70s, and you asked nixon about that directly. What did he say and where did this happen . Well, the important part of that is that the premise of my question was hed been saying executive privilege, executive privilege, and then we did some research, and we discovered, by talking to very conservative legal scholars, they said executive privilege has no application in an impeachment proceeding, so thats the question that i asked, arent you misleading the American Public by claiming executive privilege because, now, we have an impeachment proceeding underway . And he rebuffed that idea and the next day ron said, you dont talk to the president that way. But it was a little insight into what was going to happen and did happen, executive privilege is wiped out when there is a formal impeachment proceeding and you then have to answer the questions that are asked of you, first in the impeachment proceeding, and i think people were first coming to the grips with we have the impeachment proceeding first and then a trial, and the trial will be in the senate, and we know from what were seeing so far where the republicans in the senate will come down when it comes to a trial. So we have rough waters ahead of us, and i hope that the country will be able to hang together and take an enlightened attitude on the left and right about what were in for. Stephen well, i think we learned a lot about the limitations of president ial power in the face of impeachment back in the nixon impeachment proceedings, and we have forgotten, these lessons dont need to be relearned, they just have to be reremembered.
