American airlines expects today to be the second busiest day of the thanksgiving Holiday Season behind yesterday. It all really hangs on this forecast. Welcome back, im gayle king with Anthony Mason and tony dokoupil. For first time, Facebook Ceo Mark Zuckerberg and his wife are sitting down together for a network tv interview. We recently visited the couple at home and at the offices of their Philanthropic Company the chanzuckerberg initiative, czi, which is four years old this week, the same as their daughter. Well tell you about the ambitious work theyre doing at the initiative in tomorrows broadcast. First, we spoke about the challenges confronting facebook and the criticism over its handling of political advertising. The main thing now that people are talking about are the political ads, that you dont want to take down political ads that people know are false. That they contain false information. What i believe is that in a democracy, its important people can see for themselves what politicians are saying so they can make their own judgments. I dont think that a private company should be censoring news. A group, about 200, wrote a letter saying they wished you would reconsider saying free speed and paid speech are not the same. Do they have a point . This is clearly a complex issue. At the end of the day, i just think that in a democracy people should be able to see for themselves what politicians are saying. Even if the ads are containing false information . Thats the issue i think people should be able to judge for themselves the character of politicians. You were in didnt recent e recentrecently in d. C. Recently, you had dinner with the president at the white house. What was the nature of the meeting . Can you say . Sure. I mean, we talked about a number of things that were on his mind and the topics that youd read in the news around our work. The dinner was not disclosed by the white house, and only became public after the fact through news reports. It came as President Trump was open lly discouraging facebook from banning political ads. Listen, people would say the optics wont good. Did he try lob to lobby you to lobby you in any way . No. I dont think thats i think some of the things that people think get discussed and discussions are not really how that works. I also want to respect that it was a private dinner, private discussion. At the same time, facebook faces antitrust investigations into its dominance of the social media marketplace. At least two federal agencies and 47 u. S. States and territories are asking if the Company Engages in anticompetitive behavior. Theres no question that there are real issues that that we need to keep on working on. I think its important to not lose track of just the enormous good that can be done by bringing people together and building community. Reporter people who know zuckerberg well say facebook wouldnt be the company it is today without the influence of his wife, Priscilla Chan. Shes a teacher and a doctor. When mark and i talk about these issues together, its like i also have the lens of being an educator and pediatrician thats worked deeply with families and individuals in all types of communities. When i zoom out, i also see that these are societal problems. These are not problems that one person, one company can fix on their own. Theres not going to be some silver bullet. But we need to Work Together as a society for that steady progress. Shes right. They both believe that these are societal problems. Its keeping him up at night. And shes very concerned for him and how they will navigate this forward. But he feels very strongly something is hitting my mic he feels strongly in how he runs a company. He wants to do good in the world. I think its something that theyre trying to navigate their way through. They are societal problems, but facebook is a huge role in terms of the traffic of conversation around the world. On these political ads, its a contrast when you hear 60 minutes report i saw that youtube and google have taken down 300 in the wake of the political campaign. Facebook, none. Everybodys trying to do the right thing. You can see more of our interview with Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan tomorrow on cbs this morning including their goals for the chanzuckerberg initiative. Reporter clark insists the current delivery model means fewer vehicles on the roads. Im gayle king. Ahead, a huge snowstorm that hit millions of thanksgiving travelers will slam the northeast with more snow. Im tony dokoupil. Its cyber monday. Im Anthony Mason. We begin world of weddings in india where many couples fall oh, but first heres todays eye opener at 8 00. More than 50 million in the path of the latest weather after heavy snow and freezing rain slammed parts of the country for days. This stuff. This is trouble. Id say we probably have between 10 inches and a foot. Delays, delays and more delays. More than 8200 flights left late. Take a look behind me. You can see all the people. Talking six states wre not done. Well throw some more on top. Winter weather is possibly to blame. The victims were returning home. Thats when the small plane went down. For the first time the white house is actually going to have the opportunity to do some of the questioning at wednesday hearing. But last night the white houses rejected that offer. Police are calling it a cowardly and senseless act. The shots erupted on the edge of the French Quarter. Jackson going to keep it running left. Walking in. Touchdown, baltimore. What could be a preview of this years super bowl. 49ers and the ravens. A game that lived up to the hype. All the way down to the wire. Three seconds left. They give to it their ice water kicker, justin tucker. 49 yards. Make it eight in a row for baltimore. 49 yards. Thats a lot, right . Very far. Very far. There have been farther but thats a good length. Baltimore is on a roll. A major storm that crossed the country over thanksgiving, guess what, now dumping snow across the northeast. That is a big old problem for commuters and people heading home from the holiday. Round one of this storm brought more than a foot of snow to parts of massachusetts, new york and New Hampshire too. Another band of snow arrives later today. Forecasters say, now, this one will last into tomorrow morning. Winter weather alerts in effect in 15 different stays. Don dahler knows what thats like in greenfield, massachusetts, where there is a foot of snow on the ground. You moved locations so you can move around sort of, kind of . Reporter yes, i just plowed through this stuff. Thats my job these days. But, yeah, the real concern obviously is this, these roads, many of which are slippery all over this part of the United States and a lot of them are actually ice covered. Its not just snow theyre having to deal with. Its been snowing here on and off for the past 24 hours. Excuse me, very cold here. Theyre expecting more snow late they are morning and then on into the evening and upstate new york has been slammed as well. Some cars have been abandoned in the middle of the streets in albany and police there are saying there have been at least 550 accidents statewide when its all over. Some area cost see close to 30 inches before heading to the northeast this storm hammered parts of the midwest and great lakes. Prompted local emergencies and on top of the snow, strong winds pushed water from Lake Michigan onshore causing serious flooding. One lifelong resident said he has never seen conditions that bad. Were also watching airports, already more than 190 flights have been canceled. More than 450 have been delayed. Hundreds were canceled yesterday and thousands delayed. Yesterday, of course, and today are the two busiest days for the holiday travelers heading home from the thanksgiving weekend. And back here in massachusetts, the state department of transportation is concerned not only about the commute this morning which is already seeing a number of accidents on these slick roads, but also this evening, this storm is far from over. Anthony. Don, thank you. I have a son headed to massachusetts back to college today. Well see how that goes. Our weathercaster lonnie quinn of our new york station joins us. How long is this going to hang around. Tomorrow but with northern maine still dealing wit. The worst is in upstate new york. This low pressure system came onshore in california and made transferred its energy to an offshore low. Now its close to shore so with that counter clockwise spin around the low its bringing in air off the ocean. The ocean water is still 50 degrees or so but as that low pushes further to the north and east now it will bring in a northeasterly flow cold enough to turn places like boston and new york from rain to snow. How much snow do we pick up . Southern vermont has already picked up 14 inches. The possibility of that pink color shows 16 inches on top of what theyve already had so you could maybe see 25, 30 inches up there. I want to show you something because a lot of people are wondering does this mean well have a big snowy winter. A lot of different theories out there. I want to talk about one that has a good track record. Has to do with the sun. The amount of the activity on the surface of the sun, solar flares. Years where we had little activity in 1996 also in 2009, 2010 the low activity on the surface of the sun has resulted in some of the biggest winters weve ever had for portions of our country and looking like we are in that every 10 to 13 years we are in a lull as star as the surface of the sun is concerned and the scientists believe we are in store for a good winter this winter. Tony, over to you. I dont like the sound of that. Thank you very much. Moving to 2020, two more democrats have dropped out of the president ial race. Daylight come and we wanna go home are you doing this what i love is burgie was born in brooklyn. His mother was from barbados. He also wrote the National Anthem of barbados, which i think is cool. He also wrote jamaica farewell. The voice is iconic and theres a sesame street version that belefonte did thats terrific. On youtube. That album was absolute huge blockbuster. I remember my parents playing it when i was a kid. Over and over and over again. Bananas are the numberoneselling fruit in america. Ive got a talk of the table about that over apples . Over apples, what im talking about. A new type of apple is hitting supermarkets this week. If you buy some, they might still be good for next years holiday apple pie. The cosmic crisp reportedly could keep for more than a year in storage. Now it sounds a little bit frightening. But dont worry, the apple is a cross between the enterprise and honey crisp apples. It apparently gives them a higher shelf life while Still Holding their naturally sweet flavor. And they are resistant to browning. If youre cutting apples and putting them in lunches curious you come back at the end of the day, they taste good and look good. How does it taste . Apparently great. And, and, and people are afraid of gmos, even though theres no research saying gmos are bad, the researchers say this is cross hybridization. They got it on a tech not guilty. The critic says hes not so sure if the post was real and said he doesnt know which restaurant review the woman was referring to. But he does know that he files two reviews a week. Oh, my. Goes to show, youre out dining have you ever been places and the people on stage will say, if youre here with somebody youre not supposed to be with, you might want to hide your face at this particular moment . Wow. You never know when youre out dining. Thats why its good do not be a cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater, you always get caught. Gayle will bring you up at talk of the table. Yes. All right. Its opposite technologies actually. You want to catch your cheating spouse, you should have hope they have weak passwords. If you dont want to lose out on cyber monday, you need strong passwords. There you go. Also, upgrade your operating system. One of the things you get the reminders, update an hour, update a day, you click no click yes. Why . The reason to click yes is because the Software Companies are constantly upgrading the tools they have to protect you against scams and to keep track of what the scammers are doing. So if you upgraded your operating system, theyll automatically block the scammers. Every time you click yes is teams to knock something out of whack or takes longer. You say get over that . Click if you want to keep whats in your wall net your Wallet Wallet in your wallet, hit upgrade now. Be wary, particularly on social media and email. Thats where a lot of scams are coming in. There will be a link that looks too good to be true. You click on it, a website thats unfamiliar. Thats where youre going to get caught. Also, look for whats called https, thats good. Theres a lock in the url, that means theyre using secure transmission software, and youre more protected than you would be otherwise. People should be looking this up. They should be looking for that at a website. Particularly a new website. If theres a lock in the browser bar, thats good. If it doesnt, thats bad. Youre a proponent of multiple passwords . I used a massword manager. I have one system that stores all my passwords, when i go to a new website it writes a 15letter password for me and stores it. The risk to that is if that ever gets hacked, im in really big trouble. The advantage is you have great, unique passwords every where. If this were information that should have been brought to someones attention yesterday because they were hacked yesterday or scammed yesterday, what do they do now . What is your recourse . It depends on where you were hacked or what happened. If someone got your credit card information, call the company immediately. You know, you report it to the Better Business bureau to try to stop other people from getting scammed. And you lock down all of your accounts. One of the advantages of using a credit card over a debit card over a debit card is you get more protections. Theres a limit on the amount that youll have to pay out to the fraudster. That gives the Credit Card Companies a big incentive to stop all these scams or to find them quickly. And to send you this text alert saying, wait a second, did you really buy 700 worth of stuff . It sits at me than 11,000 feet in a clearing among majestic peaks. Cbs sunday morning lee cowan made the long trek to the soldier stone to unlock the mysteries surrounding it. Lee joins us now. Good morning. Good morning. There is a lot of talk this time of year about the spirit of giving but this is a story about duty, duty that drove one man to build a very special gift that to this day remains a bit of a mystery. The Continental Divide. That boundary that tells a river whether to flow east or west but not everything up here is that clear cut. In a stand of trees impossibly alone sits this pillar of polished granite. Just what it is and how it got all w up here has puzzled the hearty few who have found it. For decades. They just stumble on it and go what the heck is this . We still dont know that. It makes people think. Reporter rob roy isnt comfortable talking about this mystery in part because he made a vow of silence to the man who built it. His late uncle Lieutenant Colonel stewart alyn beckly, the soldier behind soldier stone. This is kind of contrary to what uncle al may have wanted. He doesnt want to beat the drum but im beating the drum for him and a lot of people are. Reporter by all accounts colonel beckley was a soldiers soldier. He served for nearly a decade in Southeast Asia during the vietnam war. If you know anything about special forces green berets parachute behind the lines and work with Indigenous People and help them defend themselves. But most of what he was doing then, he couldnt really talk about. Correct. Reporter the troops he trained and served with had been secretly recruited by the cia. Made up mostly of mung and lao descent. They took tens of thousands of casualties fighting communism in Southeast Asia. Lives that otherwise might have been american. But for decades the u. S. Government denied their sacrifice. In a recording colonel beckley made after he retired it was clear that ignoring those foreign fighters haunted him. Long after the war had ended. I made a silent promise to myself that they would have their memorial and it would not just be in asia but their memorial would be in the United States as compatriots of ours. I mean, this was a mission. Reporter in 1990 colonel beckley set out to build his tribute with the help of a stone cutter by the name of mike donaldson. When he first described what he wanted to do, what did you think . I thought he was a quack at first and within 30 minutes i knew he wasnt. De explain why he was building it . Kind of got revealed to me over time that he didnt want it removed and the people that needed to find it would find it. Were just on top of the world. Reporter this long forgotten videotape documented the construction. This started the monument. Reporter civilian, active duty and retired veterans made up the army who unloaded eight tons of hand carved granite. Not just for the pillar but 36 socalled quote stones weighing 300 pounds apiece. Etched with a poem or a proverb written in laotian, thai and vietnamese scattered like fallen troops around the monument itself. This is for 19 morlasinali summer of fied it was the same year colonel beckley died of cancer. He never saw his offering in person. When we walked away it was done. That was the end of it. Besides a few people that stumbled across it on the Continental Divide trail, nobody knew it was there. Reporter until this happened. We come across this memorial out in the middle of nowhere. Reporter in 2013 a youtube post appeared. The secret of soldierstone was out. I read that the park rangers keep this location private. We have tried very hard to respect his vision that it would be a spot where people would just sort of find it. Reporter ranger tristan post will help you find colonel beckleys soldierstone but only if you ask. She doesnt publicize the exact location and neither will we. So this is the official folder that we keep in here. Ive never seen this. We will share this. Thats very good. Reporter rob roy had only seen pictures of his uncles dream, Nick Donaldson hasnt seen it since he built it. Its not a walk in the park. It takes a little bit to get here. So they made the long drive in fresh fallen snow and then began the long hike. You have to really want to pay your respects way up here. Mikey, you dont know how much i appreciate you coming to join me up here, okay. I mean that. Its cool. Reporter once there, the solitude is part of the experience as it leaving a token of military service. For eternity, right . After a quiet pause, it was time to go. And they like everyone left soldierstone to its isolation. Think the colonel would be proud. Im shower hes proud right now. I think a lot of people are proud. Reporter especially the memories of those now no longer forgotten. Although the Forest Service does watch over the memorial its been essentially volunteers who keep it up. They manage the collection of mementos, they make sure theres no gras teethty and clean up trash and things like that. At the end of the day colonel beckley did essentially what he wanted to do but i guess the irony is an act that selfless is so powerful. Yhe never saw it. He saw the video of them building it so he had a sense and were very particular. Reams and reams of letters he wrote to the stone cutter and the Forest Service about how he wanted. Do we know where he decided to put it. He wanted it remote. He had private land he was thinking about putting it on but didnt think it was quite right and this spot and spoke to him. When he asked the Forest Service how did you know about it . Its such a beautiful tribute to people who died for this country. How did you know . It was funny. It was a producer of ours who was searching on the internet for other things for stories and he happened to hit on this google image of this and he wondered what it was. We started looking into it and found that social media post and went from there but it was hard to get folks to talk about it because they didnt want to dishonor his memory. He wanted no negotiation with it. He just wanted it there. I love the idea that the people who need to find it will find it. Thats exactly what i was thinking. Need to know only. Beautiful piece. Thanks. Thank you, lee. You bet. Nice having you at the table too.
