Reporter yes, we just got a copy of the lawsuit here filed by raymond hill jr. The familiar i will say theyre going to file it ena party in orinda erupted in gun fire. His family says theyll file the wrongful death suit tomorrow, and their claim is that airbnb and the homeowners should have done more to vet the person that rented the house. My son got a baby on the way. Hes not going to be able to see his baby. Im mad at airbnb for even allowing this party to go down. Reporter no comment tonight from airbnb on the pending lawsuit, but the company did say today theyd pay the funeral expenses for the victims and counseling for the families. A lawyer for the hill family says that too little, too late. Airbnb did announce earlier this week a couple of things. New safety measures. They will be including human reviews of more high risk listings, and theyll also have a Rapid Response team that will field complaints. Live in the newsroom, im joe vazquez. A well deserved honor for a local hero at tonights raiders game. Bart employee John O Connor got a standing ovation at the coliseum when he appeared on the jumbotron. You might remember when he grabbed a passenger that fell onto the bart tracks seconds before the train rolled through the coliseum station. Well the raiders are back in the spotlight tonight. The last thursday night Football Game at the oakland coliseum. And they didnt waste the opportunity. Dennis odonnell has more on the teams nail biting showdown against the chargers. A couple of suspects found with all sorts of stuff stolen from bay area law enforcement. And we want to know what they were going to do with all this stuff. Heres mark sayer. Reporter police say it was the hunch of a Patrol Officer that led to the recovery of police gear. Some made him go thats not right. Reporter a Mountain View Police Officer first noticed a uhaul in front of this kohls, and a few minutes later Police Received a call from the store about suspicious activity. But when the Police Made Contact with 2 suspects and searched the uhaul, what they found was anything but ordinary. We found chains and handcuffs that belonged to a bay area department, and we also found some training material that belonged to the state agency. Reporter Mountain View police have not naming either the local or state agencies involved. Under arrest, 35yearold james atkins jr. Of San Francisco and his alleged accomplice, 28yearold ashley hunt of livermore. This happened at Milpitas High School on halloween. We brought you the story. The teacher was apparently imitating the rapper as part of a lesson. Hes since been placed on leave. Common was asked by tmz about it. Its important, man, that um, that teachers, the people who are educating our children are welleducated themselves on things that deal with history, culture, emotional history and emotional intelligence. Its important. Common said hed be open to meeting with the teacher. The rapper happens to be in the bay area tonight and tweeted out this photo of himself speaking at a tech conference in san jose. New photos from the fbi tonight of 2 former twitter employees accused of being saudi spies. Heres one employee getting arrested in seattle yesterday. The other is still wanted for the fbi tonight. U. S. Prosecutors say the saudi government recruited on the men to spy on over 6,000 of their critics. The employees were allegedly rewarded with designer watches and hundreds of thousands of dollars deposited into secret bank accounts. They have access to data that, you know, may or may not have been monitored by their corporate security department. I dont know. But whatever it may be, they had access, they used that access to provide information to a foreign government, and now look where were at. Twitter says the company limits access to sensitive account information to a limited group of trained employees. Chalk up a win tonight for elizabeth holmes. Founder a federal judge in san jose ordered prosecutors to produce government documents that her defense team has asked for for months. Shes set to go on trial in august for fraud and conspiracy charges. She faces years in prison and millions of dollars in fines if convicted. And the feds are suing a bay area biotech firm alleging they infringed on patents. They began selling truvada as an hiv treatment, but after the cdc proved it could also prevent infection, the Company Began marketing it as a preexposure regimen. Theyre also accusing gilead after profiting from private research for a drug that people cant afford. Gilead responded saying theyve acted above board to resolve this in good faith and is committed to getting the drugs to everyone who needs them. And new at 11 00, one city in Contra Costa County is making solid strides to crack down on homelessness. Kpix 5s Andrea Nakano is joining us now from martinez with whats being done to get people off the streets. Reporter the city of martinez has received awards for its work to help the homeless. Its not just about moving encampments or making arrests. The goal is getting them off the streets for good. Martinez faces the same homelessness issue like many other cities in the bay area. Here in downtown martinez, we found Homeless People in the city parks and some have set up for the night in front of closed businesses. Just last week, smoke billowed from a homeless encampment near the amtrak station in town. Tonight martinez held a Community Meeting to offer concrete solutions to the problem. Its extremely important to build trust. Reporter officer rodney brisner is the Police Department estimates there are roughly 50 men and women living on the streets. In martinez 85 percent are 65 or older. The officer goes out daily, to check on encampments and hopes hes developed enough of a relationship for those on the streets to accept change. We say is today the day we can move forward and you take advantage of that situation. Reporter the effort to build relationships seems to be paying off according to studies done by Contra Costa County, the Homeless Population in martinez is more willing to accept help. The homeless living here are actually receptive to the help being provided. Reporter officers cant remove encampments without being able to offer a shelter bed. Here in the county they only have beds for 28 percent of the Homeless Population. In martinez, Andrea Nakano, kpix 5. A sex shop that burned in downtown san jose could be turned into housing. The mercury news reports the owner wants to bulldoze the site and replace it with a residential tower. At the time proposal has been submitted to the city. And also tonight, the faa is stepping in to try to block the were possible closure of reed hill view airport in east san jose. Last december the Santa Clara County supervisors voted to stop accepting federal grants grants for the airport, paving the way to close the airport by 2031 and use the space for low income housing. The faa released a letter saying they strongly oppose the plan. Tonight investigators are trying to determine what caused a small plane to plunge into a house in San Bernardino county. We spoke with a man inside the home and he told us how he managed to save his son. Reporter the firefighters shoot water into an upland home torn open and badly burned when a small plane crashed through the roof, killing the pilot. We saw the flames coming around the corner of the hallway. Reporter matthew was inside the home with his 2yearold son when the plane slammed into hiboth. How fast were you able to grab him and get him out . Ive never been faster in my life. Reporter matthew says if he wouldnt have been in the kitchen and his baby boy on the couch, then they both would have been right here inside this bedroom when the plane hit. We both would have been napping. Reporter the faa says the pilot took off from torrance and was coming in for a landing around 11 00 a. M. Thursday morning, just a mile away from where it crashed on overland court. Its a single engine plane like this. It flew into the neighborhood low according to witnesses and sputtered. I heard the pops from the engine. Reporter tonight investigators are looking into what went wrong. The plane had a safety parachute that deployed at some point, a sign the pilot tried to slow the sinking plane before it wrecked. Im just very thankful, very thankful. Reporter neighbors are thankful too. Its crazy. My mom was less than 3 feet away from the impact. Reporter this home has also been red tagged. Theyll continue to investigate, and were waiting h pit. Yeah, the camp fire consumed the town of paradise claiming 85 lives and destroying 18,000 structures. Some people have stayed to rebuild, but for others its just too painful to stay. Reporter we met paradise superintendent Michelle Johns and her 13 month old puppy in her Paradise Unified School district office. My husband has been the ready raccoon and started the paradise fire group. Reporter he was trying to prevent a tragedy. For phil and michelle, paradise was home, and their home was in danger. Michelle was away at a conference, but was on the phone with her husband as he was being evacuated driving through the flames. He was driving next to Ridge View School as it was burning down on both sides. Reporter their dog and house was okay, but the paradise district lost 5 of its 9 schools in the fire. This district leader had to put on a happy face. Theyre looking to somebody to say were going to stick together. Reporter she says she never thought about shutting down. Why would i make all these kids lose their home and lose their schools . No, well find a way. And so thats what we did. Reporter but then more loss for john. Her dog later drowned in a neighbors pool, and then a biking trip turns tragic. This was about a half hour before the accident, before his heart attack. Reporter Michelle John mourned another loss. This time her best friend. Its a lot. Reporter but she still worked every day. She says she was motivated by this community who showed up to support her. Its hard to keep going, but i dont know what the alternative is. Reporter and in september, school would reopen. Keep kids with their teachers and keep kids together. Reporter but now john says shes retiring. Yet still, for her, this School District come first. I want to leave it better than i found it, even in these trying times. Reporter in paradise, kpix 5. What did you have for dinner tonight . More than 2 Million Pounds of chicken from simmons prepared foods are being recalled over possible metal contamination. The products were shipped to school, hospitals, and restaurants in 8 states including california. There have been no reports of anyone getting sick. Simmons says anyone who has the contaminated meat should throw it out. Something new caught our eye going up in San Francisco. Joe vazquez has more on the powerful message behind a giant four story mural. Reporter this is the newest edition to the San Francisco skyline. A mural designed to draw attention to Climate Change. High above mason street, 10 stories up on the side of the native sons building, an internationally renowned artist is painting a teen girl with big blue eyes and a mona lisa smile. Its a mural of greta thunberg, the 16yearold from sweden whos inspired young people from all over the world to take to the streets and let older people know they want Climate Change to be taken seriously. I want people to realize that they have to do something for the world otherwise this is the beginning of our extinction. Reporter he says his paintings often provoke reactions. She made the beloved Robin Williams mural that was demolished to make way for apartments. But he says this one is different. I want them to think about it, to create conversation with friends and everything. Have you seen the mural of greta . What is that about . Its about Climate Change. Reporter hes donating his time for the cause. The envinmtal rointhe in it hits pein the heart. Reporter hoping people will be inspired not just to gawk, but to act. Shes a child. At the end of the day its a child telling us what to do. I hope people are touched by the image and understand the strength and power of her message and bring about change in their lives and get involved politically. Okay, in the weather world, welcome back to summer at least in terms of our ability to show you really dramatic time lapses of the marine layer surging over the hills under sutro tower. It started this afternoon and got thicker and deeper and more impressive, and now if you step outside we pretty much all have gray overhead. At least in the bay. In fact lets go back now to 10 00 this morning using the satellite imagery. This is the High Resolution satellite imagery. And the reason im doing this is because that is pretty much what tomorrow is going to look like. So if you woke up this morning and you had any issues with fog on the roadway, in fact we had a dense fog advisory for the north bay today. If that was your drive, plan on a similar scenario tomorrow morning, so maybe start thinking ahead for a little extra time on the roadway. It was the north bay today. We could see that develop in some other places, but its likely a repeat if we do it at all. Right now the National Weather service hasnt issued anything let. So one more time, 10 00 a. M. , 11 00 a. M. , to noon, and then it was gone. Well probably do that again tomorrow. This keeps the overnight lows relatively warm because it helps to insulate things. And then tomorrow with no influence whatsoever for those inland locations, its going to be almost 20 degrees warmer in concord than in San Francisco.
